Clelia Rodríguez’s powerful piece speaks of pain – the pain incurred through historical injustice; the pain of disconnection, invisibility and division – the pain of the hopeful living in a world of helplessness and disconnected pedagogies. Her message is clear: tertiary education must change in order to support peaceful resolution of conflict, and to value and help preserve our precious environment. Abstract:

A new type of surfaces in 4-dimensional Euclidean and Lorentz-Minkowski space is constructed by performing two simultaneous rotations on a planar curve. In analogy with rotational surfaces, the resulting surfaces are called double rotational surfaces. Classification theorems of flat double rotational surfaces are proved. These classifications contain amongst other cones over 4-dimensional Clelia curves. As a side product these new kinds of curves in 4-space are defined.

Abstract:
The second half of the nineteenth century saw a proliferation of translations from romance languages into Romanian as a consequence of the economic and cultural development of the Romanian society. In this context, 1893 saw the publication of the first Romanian translation of De Amicis’s Cuore (Heart): An Italian Schoolboy’s Journal, by Clelia Bruzzesi (1836-1903). The twentieth century brought five other versions, two of them signed by women translators: Sofia Nădejde (1856-1946) in 1916 and Mia Frollo (1885-1962) in 1936. Until recently, Cuore was part of the primary school curriculum in Romania, so the text left a mark on the cultural history of the country. This paper aims to raise awareness of the often neglected translation activity of women and to reveal Bruzzesi, Nădejde and Frollo’s place in society as well their motivations and the public reception of their translations.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) are cardiac peptide hormones with pivotal roles in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis. BNP and its precursor fragment are accepted as gold standard markers for heart failure (HF). Human ANP is present in the atria of the heart and plasma as 3 endogenous molecular forms designated α-ANP, β-ANP, and proANP. A previous study indicated that the ratios of these 3 ANP forms are altered in the plasma of HF patients. The purpose of our study was to establish immunoassays for quantifying the individual ANP forms to collect clinical information. Methods We developed 3 plate-based chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassays (CLEIAs) for measuring total ANP (i.e., sum of α-ANP, β-ANP, and proANP), β-ANP, and proANP levels. To minimize background signals, we added single-step PEGylation targeting the immobilized antibody in the conventional plate-based sandwich CLEIA procedure. Results CLEIAs with PEGylation showed sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility, and accuracy satisfying clinical requirements. Two of the CLEIAs enabled direct measurement in plasma samples. During treatments, acute decompensated HF patients exhibited marked decreases in plasma β-ANP levels but moderate decreases in plasma proANP level. The plasma ratios of α-ANP/total ANP and proANP/total ANP in acute decompensated HF patients were maintained, whereas the β-ANP/total ANP ratio was significantly decreased at discharge. Conclusions The combination of the 3 CLEIAs enabled accurate quantification of α-ANP, β-ANP, and proANP, even in plasma samples, and indicated the potential of β-ANP and proANP as circulating biomarkers for HF, with different characteristics from that of BNP.

Full text
Abstract:
In the present study, we developed a new chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) using a two-step sandwich method to measure aldosterone concentrations. We investigated serum and plasma aldosterone concentrations in 75 blood samples from 27 patients using a radioimmunoassay (RIA) and the CLEIA (with current and newly improved reagents) as well as liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Based on the results of the Passing–Bablok regression analysis, the aldosterone levels measured using CLEIA with the new reagents and those measured by LC-MS/MS were found to be significantly correlated (slope, 0.984; intercept, 0.2). However, aldosterone levels varied depending on the measurement method (i.e., CLEIA with the new reagent, CLEIA with the current reagent, and RIA). Aldosterone levels were lower with the improved CLEIA method than with RIA and CLEIA using the current reagent. Therefore, the cutoff values of the screening test as well as those of the confirmatory test for primary aldosteronism (PA) should be adjusted to follow current clinical practice guidelines for PA. The formula that can be used to obtain the aldosterone level (pg/mL) when using CLEIA with the new reagent is 0.765 × RIA (pg/mL) − 33.7. This formula will enable PA cutoff values to be set for provisional screening and confirmatory tests.

Abstract:
Lead is a heavy metal with increasing public health concerns on its accumulation in the food chain and environment. Immunoassays for the quantitative measurement of environmental heavy metals offer numerous advantages over other traditional methods. ELISA and chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA), based on the mAb we generated, were developed for the detection of lead (II). In total, 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of lead (II) were 9.4 ng/mL (ELISA) and 1.4 ng/mL (CLEIA); the limits of detection (LOD) were 0.7 ng/mL (ic-ELISA) and 0.1 ng/mL (ic-CLEIA), respectively. Cross-reactivities of the mAb toward other metal ions were less than 0.943%, indicating that the obtained mAb has high sensitivity and specificity. The recovery rates were 82.1%–108.3% (ic-ELISA) and 80.1%–98.8% (ic-CLEIA), respectively. The developed methods are feasible for the determination of trace lead (II) in various samples with high sensitivity, specificity, fastness, simplicity and accuracy.

Abstract:
The rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 is critical for the prevention of disease outbreaks. Antigen tests such as immunochromatographic assay (ICA) and chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay (CLEIA) can yield results more quickly than PCR. We evaluated the performance of ICA and CLEIA using 34 frozen PCR-positive (17 saliva samples and 17 nasopharyngeal swabs [NPS]) and 309 PCR-negative samples. ICA detected SARS-CoV-2 in only 14 (41%) samples, with positivity rates of 24% in saliva and 59% in NPS. Notably, ICA detected SARS-CoV-2 in 5 of 6 samples collected within 4 days after symptom onset. CLEIA detected SARS-CoV-2 in 31 (91%) samples, with a positivity of 82% in saliva and 100% in NPS. These results suggest that the use of ICA should be limited to an earlier time after symptom onset and CLEIA is more sensitive and can be used in situations where quick results are required.
