Abstract:
131 Background: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals make up an estimated 4% of the population, qualifying them as a sexual minority. LGBT individuals are also more likely to be a racial or gender minority, to live in poverty, and to have less social support than their heterosexual peers. LGBT populations are disproportionately affected by mental health issues such as depression, which are correlated not only with behavioral risk factors, but with less likelihood to comply with healthcare screening or treatment. Approximately 30% of LGBT adults do not seek health care services or lack a regular health care provider, compared with 10% of heterosexuals. Research studies demonstrate that knowledge about increased risks and need for screening is low in LGBT populations. Sub-populations are less likely to have had a recent mammogram, anal or cervical Pap, or a prostate exam. Methods: We implemented a population-oriented program into our community outreach team in 2019 to address LGBT cancer disparities. A program manager partnered with community resources and leaders, including the Cleveland LGBT Community Center, Plexus LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and Trans Ohio. First year programming included a mammogram clinic for sexual/gender minority (SGM) women, “Cancer is a DRAG” show, and a tobacco-free campaign for LGBT pride month. Results: Creating meaningful partnerships was extremely important to community leaders and organizations. Strategic plans include direct community input and engagement through a community council, in conjunction with the LGBT Community Center, a breast cancer awareness campaign, in conjunction with local entertainers, and a tobacco cessation program, through our Center for LGBT Care. We educated over 150 people and screened over 85 within the first year. Conclusions: When our healthcare institution met local LGBT people within their community, the result was quite impactful. This pilot program proved successful at educating members of the community about their increased cancer risk, which resulted in higher cancer screening rates for LGBT people. More programs tailored to LGBT-specific health concerns are important to continue reaching these populations and eventually decrease health disparities in the community.

Abstract:
This paper presents the hypothesis and experimental results of expulsion of spheres that are made up of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), also known as Teflon, and Teflon spheres layered with superhydrophobic substances, from water under microgravity conditions. The microgravity was simulated in a drop tower. The microgravity tests were conducted in the 2.2 Second Drop Tower at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The experimental test objects chosen were: a) the unmodified PTFE sphere to serve as the base case (30 mm diameter); b) a PTFE sphere of same diameter layered with butyl rubber (25 mm of PTFE and 5 mm of butyl rubber); and c) a PTFE sphere of same diameter layered with paraffin (25 mm of PTFE and 5 mm of Paraffin). We hypothesized that the PTFE sphere with a butyl rubber coating would rise the highest distance in the drop chamber due to its super-hydrophobicity as determined by the contact angle of the objects. We tested the effect of microgravity on fully submerged and partially submerged objects in water. The expulsion data from our experimental runs in both fully and partially submerged protocols is presented, as well as our analysis and recommendations. Our test resulted in measurable reduction of the hydrophobicity effect while exposed to microgravity. We propose new research regarding a compounding effect of hydrophobicity based on surface properties and roughness of substances

Abstract:
ABSTRACTHenry Wood Elliott (1846–1930), a U.S. Treasury official assigned to monitor the harvest of northern fur seals on the Pribilof Islands in the 1870s, became a self-taught expert on, and defender of, the species. His careful documentation of the seals’ breeding behaviour, and of their commercial harvest, complemented by hundreds of detailed and evocative watercolours, provides a unique record of this once abundant species and the lucrative industry that revolved around it. Elliott's outspoken lobbying on behalf of the seals’ protection is often credited with saving the species from extinction. His paintings of the seals, the seal harvest, and life on the Pribilof Islands in the second half of the nineteenth century constitute an unmatched historical record of this remote region.Elliott was able to witness two full breeding seasons (and harvesting) of the fur seals during his initial stay on the Pribilofs from April 1872 to October 1873. He returned to the islands to conduct a follow-up census of the seals, on behalf of the U.S. Government, in the summer of 1874. He traveled there unofficially and at his own expense in 1876. His fourth trip to the Pribilofs was in the spring of 1890 (again on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Treasury), in response to news of a dramatic decline of the seal populations. In April, 1891, because of his public revelation of mismanagement of the fur seal harvest, Elliott was fired by the Treasury. He continued his tireless lobbying on behalf of the fur seals as a private citizen for the rest of his life. He visited the Pribilofs for the last time on behalf of the House Committee on Expenditures in the Department of Commerce and Labor in the summer of 1913. Born in Cleveland Ohio on November 13, 1846, Elliott died in Seattle Washington on May 25, 1930.
