Abstract:

Abstract:
In recent years, multi-tier architectures have become the standard computing environment for web- and enterprise applications. The application server tier is often the heart of the system embedding the business logic. Adaptability, in particular the capability to adjust to the load submitted to the system and to handle the failure of individual components, are of outmost importance in order to provide 7/24 access and high performance. Replication is a common means to achieve these reliability and scalability requirements. With replication, the application server tier consists of several server replicas. Thus, if one replica fails, others can take over. Furthermore, the load can be distributed across the available replicas. Although many replication solutions have been proposed so far, most of them have been either developed for fault-tolerance or for scalability. Furthermore, only few have considered that the application server tier is only one tier in a multi-tier architecture, that this tier maintains state, and that execution in this environment can follow complex patterns. Thus, existing solutions often do not provide correctness beyond some basic application scenarios.
In this thesis we tackle the issue of replication of the application server tier from ground off and develop a unified solution that provides both fault-tolerance and scalability. We first describe a set of execution patterns that describe how requests are typically executed in multi-tier architectures. They consider the flow of execution across client tier, application server tier, and database tier. In particular, the execution patterns describe how requests are associated with transactions, the fundamental execution units at application server and database tiers. Having these execution patterns in mind, we provide a formal definition of what it means to provide a correct execution across all tiers, even in case failures occur and the application server tier is replicated. Informally, a replicated system is correct if it behaves exactly as a non-replicated that never fails. From there, we propose a set of replication algorithms for fault-tolerance that provide correctness for the execution patterns that we have identified The main principle is to let a primary AS replica to execute all client requests, and to propagate any state changes performed by a transaction to backup replicas at transaction commit time. The challenges occur as requests can be associated in different ways with transactions. Then, we extend our fault-tolerance solution and develop a unified solution that provides both fault-tolerance and load-balancing. In this extended solution, each application server replica is able to execute client requests as a primary and at the same time serves as backup for other replicas. The framework provides a transparent, truly distributed and lightweight load distribution mechanism which takes advantage of the fault-tolerance infrastructure. Our replication tool is implemented as a plug-in of JBoss application server and the performance is carefully evaluated, comparing with JBoss' own replication solutions. The evaluation shows that our protocols have very good performance and compare favorably with existing solutions.

An increasing need among telemetry data analysts for new mechanisms for efficient access to high-speed data in distributed environments has led BBN to develop a new architecture for data analysis. The data sets of concern can be from either real-time or post-test sources. This architecture consists of an expandable suite of tools based upon a data distribution software "backbone" which allows the interchange of high volume data streams among server processes and client workstations. One benefit of this architecture is that it allows one to assemble software systems from a set of off-the-shelf, interoperable software modules. This modularity and interoperability allows these systems to be configurable and customizable, while requiring little applications programming by the system integrator.

Abstract:
This study examines the role of traditional computing performance measures when used in a client/server system (C/SS) environment. It also evaluates the effectiveness of traditional computing measures of mainframe systems for use in C/SS. The underlying problem was the lack of knowledge about how performance measures are aligned with key business goals and strategies. This research study has identified and evaluated client/server performance measurements' importance in establishing an effective performance evaluation system. More specifically, this research enables an organization to do the following: (1) compare the relative states of development or importance of performance measures, (2) identify performance measures with the highest priority for future development, (3) contrast the views of different organizations regarding the current or desired states of development or relative importance of these performance measures.

Gui, Feng. "Development of a New Client-Server Architecture for Context Aware Mobile Computing." FIU Digital Commons, 2009. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/202.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation studies the context-aware application with its proposed algorithms at client side. The required context-aware infrastructure is discussed in depth to illustrate that such an infrastructure collects the mobile user’s context information, registers service providers, derives mobile user’s current context, distributes user context among context-aware applications, and provides tailored services. The approach proposed tries to strike a balance between the context server and mobile devices. The context acquisition is centralized at the server to ensure the usability of context information among mobile devices, while context reasoning remains at the application level. Hence, a centralized context acquisition and distributed context reasoning are viewed as a better solution overall. The context-aware search application is designed and implemented at the server side. A new algorithm is proposed to take into consideration the user context profiles. By promoting feedback on the dynamics of the system, any prior user selection is now saved for further analysis such that it may contribute to help the results of a subsequent search. On the basis of these developments at the server side, various solutions are consequently provided at the client side. A proxy software-based component is set up for the purpose of data collection. This research endorses the belief that the proxy at the client side should contain the context reasoning component. Implementation of such a component provides credence to this belief in that the context applications are able to derive the user context profiles. Furthermore, a context cache scheme is implemented to manage the cache on the client device in order to minimize processing requirements and other resources (bandwidth, CPU cycle, power). Java and MySQL platforms are used to implement the proposed architecture and to test scenarios derived from user’s daily activities. To meet the practical demands required of a testing environment without the impositions of a heavy cost for establishing such a comprehensive infrastructure, a software simulation using a free Yahoo search API is provided as a means to evaluate the effectiveness of the design approach in a most realistic way. The integration of Yahoo search engine into the context-aware architecture design proves how context aware application can meet user demands for tailored services and products in and around the user’s environment. The test results show that the overall design is highly effective, providing new features and enriching the mobile user’s experience through a broad scope of potential applications.

This paper describes a PC-based Advanced Telemetry Processing and Display System (ATPDS)- a highend, real-time telemetry processing and display system implemented on a COTS PC platform. for A network-centric architecture was chosen from candidate architectures as the most viable for the ATPDS. The network-centric architecture is Windows NT-based, client/server based, supporting clients and servers on both local or remote PC workstations. The architecture supports distributing processing loads across multiple workstations, optimizing mission processing requirements. The advantage of this system is its flexibility and expandability with low acquisition and life-cycle support costs. The ATPDS allows the user to configure one or more small systems into a larger high-end system based on varying mission requirements.

Abstract:
This study examined the problem of financing of information technology in higher education institutions. Some of the pressures faced by those institutions as they attempt to control expenditures while continuing to support information technology were also examined. Particular emphasis was placed on the aspects of information technologies as they relate to pace of acquisition, the use of client/server computing, the Internet and the World Wide Web. The current study replicated a case study conducted by Samuel Levy at the University of Arizona in 1988, and extended it as described above, to explore various aspects of recent technological advances at Fairfield University. Levy (1988) used two surveys to assess computer use of the faculty and administrators. Those surveys were modified to reflect the environment in the case organization, and to capture data on the aspects Gmt extended the original study. The study used multiple sources of data as recommended by the literature, to improve the reliability of the study. The multiple sources included interviews, and internal documents that were relevant to the research agenda. The results of the survey showed that respondents expect their use of the Internet and the World Wide Web to increase in the next few years. The current method of equipment procurement was found unsatisfactory by a majority of the respondents. With the use of client/server computing increasing at all institutions, and the rapid growth in the use of the Internet and the World Wide Web, the results of this study should be of value to many other institutions. The recommendations of the study include shortening the information technology planning cycle to reflect the rapid advances in technology. Each planning cycle should be followed by a survey to evaluate the user acceptance of the initiatives in the planning cycle. The study also recommended formal capacity planning procedures for client/server environments to ensure the efficiency and integrity of the operation. Future researchers might be able to use the new groupings of data that were developed in this study. New variables could lead to new analyses and fresh insight into the problem of rapid acquisition of information technology.

Nik, Hassan Nik Rushdi. "The Role of Workstation-Based Client/Server Systems in Changing Business Processes: a Multiple Case Study." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1995. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc279239/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although several studies question information technology's contribution to productivity, organizations continue to invest in client/server systems (CSSs) particularly as enablers of business process reengineering (BPR). These efforts may be wasted if they do not improve business processes. This study focused on business processes and investigated the role of workstation-based CSSs in changing business processes. A multiple case study of workstation-based CSS databases in three organizations was performed with the proposition that they moderate the relation between managerial action and changes within business processes. The research framework suggested that changes to business processes are achieved by reducing uncertainty. In order to measure change in business processes, this study categorized business process change into: (1) compressing sequential tasks across functions, (2) compressing tasks vertically within the managerial hierarchy, (3) eliminating slack resources, (4) reducing the distance between the point of decision and the point of information or eliminating intermediaries, (5) reconfiguring sequential processes to operate in parallel, and (6) linking parallel activities during the process. Data collected from questionnaires, interviews, and observations from three case studies were used to construct network diagrams, relationship matrices, reachability matrices, and task tables of business processes. The results of this research partially support the proposition that managerial action affects business process change by reducing uncertainty. This research suggests that changes in the use of workstation-based CSSs are related to changes in business processes. However, because ofthe small sample size, no finding was made regarding changes in the strength of that relationship. Therefore, within its limitations, this research (1) partially supports the proposition that CSSs moderate changes in business processes, (2) found that both favorable and unfavorable changes may result from using CSSs, (3) explains how business process change occurs, and (4) suggests new variables for measuring successful BPR.

Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Massively Multiplayer Online Games are large virtual worlds co-inhabited by players over the Internet. As up to thousands of players can be simultaneously connected to the game, the server and network architectures are required to scale e ciently. The traditional client/server model results in a heavy nancial burden for operation of the server. Various alternative architectures have been proposed as a replacement for the traditional model, but the adoption of these alternatives are slow as they present their own set of challenges. The proposed hybrid system is based on many di erent architectures and peer-topeer concepts that were reviewed in the literature. It aims to provide a compromise for existing, commercially successful MMOGs to introduce peer-to-peer components into their systems with no requirement of modi cation to their server or client software. With the system's design presented, the middleware software is implemented and deployed in a real, controlled environment alongside an Ultima Online game server and its clients. The movement game mechanic was distributed amongst the peers while the others remained the responsiblity of the server. A number of performance experiments are performed to measure the e ects of the modi ed system over the original client/server system on bandwidth, latency, and hardware impact. The results revealed an increase in the server bandwidth usage by 35%, slave bandwidth usage by 17% and supernode bandwiwdth usage by 3111%. The latencies of distributed server mechanics were reduced by up to 94%, while the non-distributed latencies were increased by up to 6000%. These results suggested that a system with absolutely no modi cation to the server is unlikely to provide the desired bene ts. However, with 2 minor modi cations to the server, the middleware is able to reduce both server load and player latencies. The server bandwidth can be reduced by 39%, while the supernode's bandwidth is increased only by 1296%. The distributed latencies maintain their reduction while non-distributed latencies remain unchanged from the C/S system.

Abstract:
The emerging general purpose graphics processing units (GPGPU) computing has tremendously speeded up a great variety of commercial and scientific applications. The GPUs have become prevalent accelerators in current high performance clusters. Though the computational capacity per Watt of the GPUs is much higher than that of the CPUs, the hybrid GPU clusters still consume enormous power. To conserve energy on this kind of clusters is of critical significance. In this thesis, we seek energy conservative computing on the GPU accelerated servers. We introduce our studies as follows. First, we dissect the GPU memory hierarchy due to the fact that most of the GPU applications are suffering from the GPU memory bottleneck. We find that the conventional CPU cache models cannot be applied on the modern GPU caches, and the microbenchmarks to study the conventional CPU cache become invalid for the GPU. We propose the GPU-specified microbenchmarks to examine the GPU memory structures and properties. Our benchmark results verify that the design goal of the GPU has transformed from pure computation performance to better energy efficiency. Second, we investigate the impact of dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS), a successful energy management technique for CPUs, on the GPU platforms. Our experimental results suggest that GPU DVFS is still promising in conserving energy, but the patterns to save energy strongly differ from those of the CPU. Besides, the effect of GPU DVFS depends on the individual application characteristics. Third, we derive the GPU DVFS power and performance models from our experimental results, based on which we find the optimal GPU voltage and frequency setting to minimize the energy consumption of a single GPU task. We then study the problem of scheduling multiple tasks on a hybrid CPU-GPU cluster to minimize the total energy consumption by GPU DVFS. We design an effective offline scheduling algorithm which can reduce the energy consumption significantly. At last, we combine the GPU DVFS and dynamic resource sleep (DRS), another energy management technique, to further conserve the energy, for the online task scheduling on hybrid clusters. Though the idle energy consumption increases significantly compared to the offline problem, our online scheduling algorithm still achieves more than 30% of energy conservation with appropriate runtime GPU DVFS readjustments.

Abstract:
The problem investigated in this study was the specific nature of management issues in the information system (IS) data conversion process: extended project time, high staff turnover, cost overrun, adherence to procedure and user disagreement. Data conversion involves the transfer of computer programs and data files from one computer system to another. Managing data conversion projects has posed problems and difficulties. A thorough comprehension of these issues has systematically eluded information technology (IT) professionals, and this may be related to unsuccessful outcomes of data conversion. Presently, most successful data conversion outcomes are ad hoc solutions rather than a more permanent strategy that will improve success rate of the conversion outcomes. Little of these data have been analyzed concerning the human elements of the organization. Reports from the IS literature have indicated that data conversion tends to have more managerial than technical problems. Secondly, IT experts have warned that automated tools and experience alone may not guarantee immunity from data conversion headaches. In addition, studies have shown that the cyclical nature of the IT industry suggests that data conversion traumas (problems and difficulties) still lurk ahead. The researcher's goal in this dissertation was to investigate management issues during the information systems change process in order to determine the relationships between attribution factors and styles. A second goal was to analyze relationships (if any), among the study variables. The researcher used attribution theory to investigate various relationships among management issues. The researcher used a validated instrument called the Occupational Attribution Style Questionnaire (OASQ), developed by Adrian Furnham, Valda Sadka and Chris Brewin. The validity and reliability of this instrument were established previously with Chronbach's alpha of 0.92. Mail-in questionnaires were distributed to 300 stratified IT managers and professionals from companies, government agencies, colleges and universities. The survey results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to determine the relationships between attribution factors and styles. Analysis of the descriptive data indicated that the factors were perceived to be very important with mean scores ranging from a minimum of2.14 to a maximum of 4.56. A factor analysis resulted in the identification of 5 items that loaded significantly on three factors: (1) internality, (2) externality, (3) chance. Correlation analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses and to identify associations between these stated factors. Conclusive evidence from these analyses showed the following: (a) there was a positive correlation between attribution factors and management attribution, (b) there was a positive correlation between attribution style and project success, (c) there was a positive correlation between salary and position, (d) there was a negative correlation between gender and education, (e) there was a positive correlation between salary and education. The conclusions of the researcher in this study contributed to the base of knowledge by providing empirically tested information for assisting management in industry, academicians and government in implementing data conversion programs. In addition, results of this research provided a variety of interesting decision-making skills and professional practices among IT professionals. These results can be used to implement techniques and strategies for increasing the success rate of data conversion projects.
