Olazabal, Marta. "Sustainable urban development under climate change and resource scarcity." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2015. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/248999.

Abstract:
The urgent need to transform our patterns of urban development has been expressed not only by the scientific community but also in the policy arena. Current concerns relate to increasing urbanisation and global environmental trends in regard to resource scarcity, climate change and degrading environmental quality. Urban complexity, cross-scale impacts, socio-institutional diversity and adaptability become crucial when thinking about alternative development pathways. This dissertation seeks to explore why and how cities face change in this context by revisiting the concepts of resilience, susta

Abstract:
Technology and policy play a twofold role in international environmental laws. Stronger environmental policies encourage new green technologies and likewise, better technologies make it easier to regulate. “Technology transfer” refers to the transfer from one party, an association or institution that developed the technology, to another that adopts, adapts, and uses it. As different kinds of threats posed by climate change are continuously increasing all over the world the issue of “technology transfer” especially the transfer of environmentally sound technologies has become one of the key top

Abstract:
This thesis studies sustainable tourism and climate change with discourse analysis by addressing two special issues of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, published in 2006 and 2010. Based on social constructionism assumptions, discourse theory assumes knowledge as “power-constructed reality” with the usage of language, that is, discourses. The formation of discourse thereby can be analyzed based on the texts presented. Likewise, the knowledge presented in the papers, namely the content of the special issues, is treated as empirical data containing discourses worthy of identifying and discussi

Climate change is an increasingly urgent problem. How it is communicated and represented are of interest to those seeking to understand action or inaction on the issue. There is increasing interest on how it is being communicated visually. This research speaks to the growing body of literature on the visual communication of climate change in order to contribute to the wider critical literature addressing the role of images in the communication of climate change. It does so by considering a neglected site of climate change imagery: the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) report c

Abstract:
This work explores the narratives associated with the benefits of sustainable urban agriculture areas in terms of adaptation to climate change in the Cape Town Metropolitan Area, South Africa. Urbanization and climate change are stressing urban areas in developing countries. Therefore, finding a development path towards "sustainable adaptation" remains a critical matter for humanity. Adaptation is sustainable only if it takes into consideration climate risks, while maximizing both social justice and environmental integrity. Urban agriculture is defined in this dissertation as the urban and per

Rapid climate change is one of the most pressing environmental issues in the world, with Scandinavia andthe Arctic among those projected to be most strongly affected. Faced with a changing environment, organisms may respond in three ways – by adaptation, migration or extinction. Adaptation can occurthrough phenotypic plasticity or microevolution, and while phenotypic responses to climate change arewell described, examples showing microevolution are rare. To be able to predict the effects of climatechange, an assessment of a species’ evolutionary potential to increased temperature is necessary.I

Can rural renewable energy projects simultaneously meet the multiple goals of sustainable development, climate change mitigation and climate change adaptation? If so, under what conditions? Rural communities throughout Latin America have increasingly suffered the impacts of climate change and few policies exist to help them adapt to these impacts. The basic infrastructure and services that they frequently lack can be provided by low carbon technologies, potentially funded by international carbon finance flows that could enable the Millennium Development Goals of economic growth and poverty all

Abstract:
This paper examines the relation between climate change discourse and freedom which is held both as a self-evident value and a vital attribute for modern democracy. I argue that the discourse refutes individual freedom. It does so both through the goals and ends it promotes as well as the solutions it puts forward to achieve them, in other words through means, in the areas of economy, rights and political organization which reduce choices and diminish space of action for individuals. It opens the path to authoritarian regimes and the like by disempowering people in the name of natural order. T
