AbstractEnvironmental attitudes have the potential to affect environmental behaviors, which in turn can affect action toward current and future global environmental targets. Recent large-scale surveys find that developing countries, which account for most of the growth in greenhouse gas emissions, have high levels of pro-environmental attitudes. Respondents from developing countries state that they perceive climate change as a major global threat, that climate change directly influences their voting decisions, and that they consider climate change as big a risk as COVID-19. Respondents from developing countries with lower per capita emissions, more educated respondents, and those who have been exposed to extreme weather events tend to have more pro-environmental attitudes. However, high levels of pro-environmental attitudes do not translate into high levels of environmental performance for developing countries, as measured by a comprehensive environmental performance index. Respondents report changes in individual actions to limit their effect on climate change but tend to focus on easier behavioral changes that have a relatively low environmental impact.

AbstractFarmers in most parts of Africa and Asia still practice subsistence farming which relies minly on seasonal rainfall for Agricultural production. A timely and accurate prediction of the rainfall onset, cessation, expected rainfall amount, and its intra-seasonal variability is very likely to reduce losses and risk of extreme weather as well as maximize agricultural output to ensure food security.Based on this, a study was carried out to evaluate the performance of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) numerical Weather Prediction Model and its Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) precipitation forecast to ascertain its usefulness as a climate change adaptation tool over Nigeria. Observed daily and monthly CHIRPS reanalysis precipitation amount and the ECMWF subseasonal weekly precipitation forecast data for the period 1995–2015 was used. The forecast and observed precipitation were analyzed from May to September while El Nino and La Nina years were identified using the Oceanic Nino Index. Skill of the forecast was determined from standard metrics: Bias, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Anomaly Correlation Coefficient (ACC).The Bias, RMSE, and ACC scores reveal that the ECMWF model is capable of predicting precipitation over Southern Nigeria, with the best skill at one week lead time and poorest skills at lead time of 4 weeks. Results also show that the model is more reliable during El Nino years than La-Nina. However, some improvement in the model by ECMWF can give better results and make this tool a more dependable tool for disaster risk preparedness, reduction and prevention of possible damages and losses from extreme rainfall during the wet season, thus enhancing climate change adaptation.

Zoonotic diseases, which account for a significant proportion of all infectious diseases, underscore the urgency of adopting a multisectoral approach to health. Another pressing concern is food security, which, despite global initiatives, reveals stark disparities when viewed through the One Health lens. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a formidable global challenge, with misuse of drugs leading to increased resistance. It necessitates a holistic, One Health-based strategy. Climate change, primarily driven by human activities, poses multidimensional threats to biodiversity, health, and ecological balance. The repercussions of climate change, combined with other health challenges, emphasize the need for nations to collaborate, innovate, and commit to sustainable solutions. Abstract The main goals of this study were to evaluate the agronomic performance of wheat mutant lines; to detect the effect of genotype, location and different fertilizer levels on analysed traits; to assess seed and feed quality; and to select best performing mutant lines for dual-purpose growing. Ten wheat mutant lines were sown on two locations in Macedonia, for evaluation of their agronomic performance. At both locations, grain yield, straw mass, harvest index, nitrogen use efficiency, nitrogen and protein content in seed and straw, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre in the straw were determined. In order to classify the genotypes based on all analysed traits, two-way cluster analysis was applied. According to their overall performance, at both locations and with the three different fertilization treatments, the mutant lines were classified in two main groups. The first cluster consisted of mutants 5/1-8, 2/2-21, 4/2-56 and 2/1-51, characterized by very high values for seed yield, straw yield and harvest index, and high to moderate values for all other traits. Only 4/2-56 had very low values for N and protein content in the seed. One mutant line, 6/2-2, did not belong to any of the groups and differed from all other genotypes based on its very low seed and straw yield and very high values for nitrogen and protein content in the straw and neutral detergent fibre. All other mutants belonged to the second group, with low to moderate yield and moderate to high values for the other traits. Mutant lines with the highest seed and straw yield, as well as the best quality of seed and straw under different management systems, were identified and after additional evaluation will be submitted for official variety registration.

AbstractThis book provides a unique approach to the Moroccan context. Many researchers have conducted fieldwork in Morocco, departing from migration studies (e.g., De Haas 2003, 2006, 2010; Czaika and De Haas 2011; De Haas and El Ghanjou 2000), while others solely focused on environmental and climate changes (e.g., Schilling et al. 2012), leaving the interplay between both to be explored more in-depth. The Moroccan context offers a unique research context because it is confronted with gradual environmental change over the last decades and has initiated considerable action at the national level to develop policies or strategies to counteract these changes. Hence, Morocco in 2019 ranked among the leading countries in the fight against climate change on the Climate Change Performance Index (Burck et al. 2019). Furthermore, Morocco evolved into one of the world’s leading emigration countries in the second half of the twentieth century, being characterized by unexpected developments, including colonial migration, labour migration, family reunification, and, recently, undocumented migration. Abstract Cold stress is a common factor affecting rice culture in temperate regions, which impairs seed germination, crop establishment and grain yield. This work aimed to identify, through a TILLING assay, rice mutant families displaying cold tolerance during the germination stage. The mutant analyses were performed in 4000 M<sub>3</sub> plants obtained through chemical mutagenesis with ethyl methanesulfonate. We screened for mutations in the Os03g0103300 (qLTG3-1) gene, which is responsible for cold tolerance during germination. The TILLING assay identified a mutant (516 A3) which was tested for germination efficiency in cold stress (13°C). The mutant genotype showed a higher relative performance in germination and germination velocity index, which was more than 50% higher compared with wild-type. The mutation induction was efficient in creating genetic variability for cold stress tolerance during germination. Gene expression analyses demonstrate that Os03g0103300 was downregulated in stage S3 in the mutant and wild-type plants germinated under cold stress. However, downregulation in the Os03g0103300 gene was less severe in the mutant, which suggests that the expression related to germination ability under cold stress may be detected in the previous stages, embryo activation and weakening of the tissues that cover the embryo. Overall, the mutant 516 A3 presents a new genetic variant for cold tolerance during germination.

This study aims to assess the trophic level of Lake Ichkeul and predict the effect of climate change and anthropogenic pressures on European eel using the trophic index TRIX and the Random Forest RF model. The TRIX values show the poor water quality of the lake. While the RF model shows that eel landing depends on water level, turbidity, and salinity. The RF model gave an R2 =58.4% &gt; R2 =40.3% from Multiple linear regression, confirming the high performance of the RF model. The combination of the two models is an appropriate approach to be used in decision making by civil authorities.

The comprehensive climate risk index (CRI) is used to proxy climate change risk in this chapter as an independent variable alongside control variables such as credit risk/nonperforming loan (CRISK), total asset (TA), leverage (LEV), net income margin (NIM), capital adequacy ratio (CAR), yield on earning assets (YEA), and gross domestic product (GDP). Return on assets (ROA) as the response variable was used as proxy for performance of the top six listed South African banks on the Johannesburg stock exchange. Using Stata in a multiple regression technique for the period 2006 to 2019, this chapter concludes that the CRI is negative but not significant enough to impact performance of banks; however, its different individual components such as drought index, rain-waterlogged, etc. could be computed and regressed with other profitability measures to investigate their impact on performance of the banks in future editions of this book.

This article aims to investigate the extent of carbon emissions disclosures in Portuguese companies operating in environmentally sensitive industries, from 2008 to 2012. Additionally, the chapter aims to explore the factors that explain the extent of such disclosures. The research sample is based upon Portuguese companies that had been continuously integrating in the PNALE I and II, over the twelve-year period. A content analysis of their annual/sustainability reports was conducted to explore the carbon emissions-related disclosures. The study also uses a disclosure index to investigate the extent of disclosure and a panel data regression model was performed to determine the factors that influence carbon emissions reporting. The results show a relatively high level of disclosure and the influence of size, activity sector, concentration of capital and economic period on the level of disclosure presented.
