This habilitation thesis presents the findings of the sea level change studies conducted at the Institute of Geodesy of the Technischen Universität Darmstadt betweeen 2001 and 2013. Sea level is an important indicator of climate change. It has been traditionally measured by coastal tide gauges and by satellite altimetry since 1993. Tide gauge measurements indicate a coastal average sea level rise of 1-2 millimeters per year over the 20th century. This thesis has three separate parts. In the first part I report the first ex post study of the economic impact of sea level rise. I apply two econometric approaches to estimate the past effects of sea level rise on the economy of the USA, viz. Barro type growth regressions adjusted for spatial patterns and a matching estimator. The unit of analysis is 3063 counties of the USA. I fit growth regressions for 13 time periods and I estimate numerous varieties for both growth regressions and matching estimator. This work examines the use of pedo-properties to identify dune soil system responses to environmental change on the Sefton coast, based on the development of conceptual pedogenic models. Previous environmental change and shoreline dynamics are determined through O.S. maps and aerial photographs, while present day processes are investigated through a dune-toe photographic survey and seasonal monitoring by fixed point photography. Topsoil (0-5 cm) physico-chemical characteristics are presented in a series of baseline GIS maps, displaying spatial pedo-property variation across the dune landscape.
