"Feasibility of an ecosystem-based management in an eastern Canadian boreal forest : testing for ecological suitability, economic viability, social acceptability and adaptability to wildfire and climate change." Full textIn the quest of implementing an ecosystem-based management (EBM) in a boreal forest in eastern Canada, we conducted a feasibility study focusing on ecological suitability, economic viability and social acceptability. Through timber supply models, we compared the outputs of EBM with a business as usual (BAU) management to determine former’s robustness and adaptability to the increase in wildfire and growth anomalies induced by climate changes. Timber supply analyses use yield models, most often at the stand-level to project harvestable volume over the planning horizon. Since EBM tend to delay harvesting age, the question may be raised on to what extent existing yield tables can be used with such strategies. When a yield table is rated against a tree-level model, we show that although the tree-level model is less biased, none of the models performed adequately to predict the volume growth of our study area, especially when subdividing the data by attributes that may have an important role while implementing EBM. For both models, the major source of error was related to stand density. Due to its relative simplicity, we chose stand-level yield tables to build our timber supply models. We then carried out a feasibility study of implementing an EBM strategy in a boreal forest in eastern Canada. With standard linear programming, we tested four policy issues; age structure, harvest agglomeration; limit of cumulative disturbance, and land base of aboriginal interest. These issues were dealt with 3% – 22% reduction in periodic wood supply and a transition period of 50 years where clear-cut needs to be excluded in 43% – 67% of the productive area. Validation of the outputs through habitat requirement of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) as a fine filter showed that most of the scenarios should likely allow a self-sustaining caribou population within next 25-years. Finally, we integrated climate sensitive fire burn rates and yield tables in the timber supply models to quantify the uncertainty induced by climate and fire under both management strategies. Both models responded with a reduction of periodic wood supply by 13% – 79%. Although ecological indicators are relatively better under EBM, merely switching the management strategy is not enough to address the impacts of fire and climate change in the boreal forests. Key words: Boreal forest, ecosystem-based management, growth and yield, feasibility, adaptation, wildfire, climate change

Full textGävle municipality's plans to exploit the city to the south are under the general plan for the areas Järvsta and Ersbo, these areas are dewatered to Järvsta stream. This thesis is an investigation of the Järvsta stream regarding flood risk areas within the basin with consideration to the planned development areas. Investigation of the catchment area has been carried out through field visits, literature studies and modeling with MIKE FLOOD. The problem with Järvsta stream is that it is already heavily loaded. With increased development areas for housing and commercial areas in Hemlingby and Järvsta expected Järvsta stream to be even more loaded in case of extreme rainfall. Ersbo industrial area is also expected to affect surface water flows, hence higher proportion paved surface in combination with the planned landfill for snow in the industrial area expect to impact the flow frequencies. The landfill for snow in Ersbo affects the flow frequencies during the melt period. Risk Points of flooding is found in low points and passages under E4, Södra Kungsvägen, Upplandsleden and Bomhusvägen. These points should delay stormwater to increase control over flows and reduce the risk of flooding and cost of restoration of the buildings and infrastructure. Risk points adjacent to the existing residential areas and planned residential areas should be prioritized for investigation.

Full textStudies show that today's students are worried about the future and the increasing climate change. A survey made by the Swedish National Agency for Education about environmental education shows that approximately half of the surveyed secondary school teachers are not engaged in teaching in the field. This study describes an alternative model for teaching environmental issues. Students are by the modeling of ecosystem given an opportunity to deepen their understanding of climate change associated with the exploitation of top predators. This is a realistic problem, numerous studies show that today's ecosystems are exposed to a variety of stressors, with the origin of climate change, and the exploitation of top predators can lead to serious consequences with extinction as a result. The model used in this study is a generalized Lotka-Volterra model which works as an analytical tool. The Swedish National Agency for Education emphasizes the role of mathematics as interdisciplinary tools and model ecosystem gives students the opportunity to use math skills in a real scenario. The study also investigated how much exploitation top predators can be exposed to in line with increased climate change. The research sites include three-and four-species system of marine and terrestrial environments. The results show that the exploitation must be reduced in line with increased climate-caused changes in all cases, except terrestrial three-species system exposed to changes in interaction strengths.

Full textUntil today, there has been little interest of international Law concerning the earth’s subsurface, as the space that extends from the surface of the soil or of the seabed to the center of the earth. On the one hand, there is no rule of international law that regulates the use Sovereign States have of their territorial subsurface. It is currently understood that subsburface activities and property law that regulates them, are within domestic jurisdiction only and do not come under international law scrutinity as they waive the exercice of an absolute independance of States. On the other hand, the existing rules of international law that regulates extraterritorial subsurface, notably the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof beyond national jurisdiction and the Antarctic, consider the earth’s subsurface mostly in terms of use and exploitation of mineral resources. Faced with the evergrowing uses of the subsurface that are solely used for extraction or for injection and storing, and regarding the impacts of some underground activities on the environment and on human rights, International Law must play a role by regulating the content and extent of rights that are exercised over the earth’s subsurface inside and outside territorial jurisdiction for development and protection purposes

Full textForest certification, which guarantees that commercial wood comes from forests submitted to sustainable practices, represents an important economical stake. This is why foresters seek research results that will help them improve forest management from environmental and conservation perspectives. In this general context, the objective of this thesis was to analyze the consequences on plant diversity of different cutting methods (clear-cutting, heavy or light thinning), of different machinery (skidder, machine of cutting-lopping-sawing, forwarder) and of environmental modifications (forest gaps, modifications of the soil surface). Temporal changes in these environmental factors, which influence biodiversity, were analyzed in order to identify techniques managing, as much as possible, towards good functioning, stability and durability of the ecosystem. We worked on the specific case of Aleppo pine forest in the central Var region, a wood which is used by the paper industry. .
Souissi, Imen. "Resilience and adaptive capacity of mediterranean farming systems to climate change : application to the low valley of Medjerda-Tunisia." Thesis, Montpellier 1, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014MON10001.
Full textClimate change would impact sustainability of most agricultural systems in the Mediterranean region and particularly in the south of the Mediterranean. It is expected that agricultural systems react differently depending on biophysical, socioeconomic and political contexts of each agriculture. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the resilience and adaptive capacity to climate change of the farming systems of the Low Valley of Medjerda (Northern Tunisia). To meet this objective, three main steps are developed. The first chapter describes, based on a literature review, the agri-environmental effects of climate change in the Mediterranean region and particularly in Tunisia. The second chapter analyzes the potential impact of climate change on the resilience of the farming systems in the Low Valley of Medjerda (LVM). To do this, an operational Framework was built. The third chapter assesses the possible adaptive strategies to cope with the effects of climate change. These strategies have been identified through a participatory approach, in consultation with farmers and local experts in the LVM watershed. For this purpose, a chain of regional biophysical-socio-economic models was used to simulate the effect of climate change, on crop yields and soil salinity at field scale, and on the resilience and adaptability of farming systems. The results of this study show heterogeneous behaviors of farming systems depending on the diversity and the degree of intensification of agricultural production (crop and livestock). More diversified and less intensified farming systems with a large animal activity seem to be more resilient than specialized farms with intensive production system. In addition, as expected, we find that adaptation strategies based on the increasing of irrigation doses to meet the increased crop water requirements (SIrr.am), supplemental irrigation of cereal (SIrr.c) and the improvement of the efficiency of irrigation systems (SIrr.sys)improve the resilience of farming systems in the LVM watershed. These strategies have a greater effect on the profitability of farming systems if they are accompanied by a binominal water tariff. The methodology used in this research can be adapted for other Mediterranean regions and assist experts and policy makers to propose and test strategies for adapting to climate change in these regions

Full textAlpine pastures, or mountain summer pastures can be defined as permanent grasslands used in summer by mountain and surrounding plains farmers (especially Provence in the French Alps). They are rich but fragile ecosystems, managed exclusively through the grazing of herds. Therefore adaptation to climate change is very specific on these spaces. Pastoral diagnosis methods and technical references are insufficient to analyse dynamic management of summer mountain pastures: static vision of vegetation and practices, climatic hazards considered only through a security coefficient, and no consideration for interactions between summer pastures and farms. In order to renew these analytical frameworks, our PhD thesis proposes a conceptual model of how the system “mountain summer pastures-farm” works, both in biophysical terms and in terms of management. The building of this model relies both on researches in ecology and agronomy, and on participatory modelling. We evaluate the model through an analysis of the vulnerability to climatic hazards of a diversified sample of systems. In order to take into account long term dynamics of climate change, we also mobilise the theories of social-ecological resilience

The main purpose of this research is to investigate how the work-related flow mediates the effect of ethical climate on organizational learning ambidexterity-exploratory learning and exploitative learning. Flow experience is one of the most important variables in the field of positive psychology. However, the applications of flow in human resource studying are not comprehensive. There is room for exploration about the consequents and antecedents of flow. The linkage between ethical climate and ambidexterity learning also can be examined. In this research, the author collected data from the employees who had job experiences by using papers and online questionnaires. The final samples included 283 subjects. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 22.0. The results showed that ethical climate had positive effect on exploratory learning and exploitative learning; ethical climate also had a positive significant impact on work flow; work flow had positive effect on exploratory learning and exploitative learning; the mediation effect of work flow on the relationship between ethical climate and exploratory learning was significant; and also, work flow had mediation effect on the relationship between ethical climate and exploitative learning. This study provided a new perspective for business to understand the influence of workplace factors on work flow, and then to develop ethical climate to stimulate organizational learning ambidexterity. Further, the author discussed more thoroughly the relationships of ethical climate, work flow, exploratory learning, and exploitative learning.
