The experiment was conducted at the Postharvest Laboratory of UFRRJ, aiming to observe the effects of competition of the processes of irradiation and climatization sequences, on the maturation of banana 'Prata' and 'Prata an??. For the treatments, the fruits were separated into two lots. The first batch was taken to Centro Tecnol?gico do Ex?rcito (CTEx), in Rio de Janeiro, to receive doses of 0.25 kGy and 0.50 kGy in irradiator with a source of 137Cs. The second batch remained in the Postharvest Laboratory, and were underwent to exposure of calcium carbide in a dose of 7 g m-?. Part of the first batch returned to the Laboratory, being exposed under the same conditions and doses of calcium carbide. In the same manner described above, part of the second batch was taken to CTEx for exposure to the same doses of gamma radiation from the first batch. Two experiments were conducted separately. In both experiments, we evaluated the skin color, index of diseases, weight loss, firmness, peel chlorophyll, acidity, starch, soluble solids, enzymatic activity (pectinmetilesterase) and respiratory activity. In the first experiment, fruits of banana 'Prata' underwent a randomized design in factorial 8x5, except for evaluations of starch and pectinmetilesterase (8x3) and firmness (8x2). The average temperature of storage was 27 ? C. In experiment two, fruits of banana 'Prata-dwarf "were also subjected to completely randomized design with 8x5 factorial design (skin color, index and weight loss) and 8x3 for the other variables. The average temperature of storage was 23 ? C. In Experiments 1 and 2 for respiratory activity, we used a split plot design in time, with six replicates. Under the conditions of this study, the fruits obtained in the region of Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro showed no positive responses in terms of quality with the application of irradiation, suggesting that the inappropriate handling of the fruits in the field, significantly influenced the results in post-harvest when the irradiation was used as a process to increase their useful life. The sequence of processes used, climatization and irradiation, regardless of the order, did not show different effects, since the fruits of both cultivars showed similar behavior during storage. More evident for the banana ?Prata-an??, treatment with gamma radiation at 0.25 kGy dose alone was effective in slowing the processes that lead to maturity

In this work, will be characterized two types of adsorptive wheels, an active effect and the other passive effect, known respectively as desiccant wheel and enthalpy wheel. These devices are used to compose the climatization adsorption systems as a means of promoting the dehumidification of air using the adsorption phenomenon that occurs in their adsorptive matrices. This phenomenon involves both the mass transfer and the heat, its cycles are defined by two processes taking place simultaneously, the adsorption and desorption. In the study, the characterization will boil down to assess the equipment in different working conditions with the main objective to achieve better dehumidification of air using the least amount of energy possible. Procedures were used for low air flow rates set in three categories: the process flow, which is the airflow to be treated, or dehumidified, a regeneration flow, which is the air stream in countercurrent flow desiccant rotor with process flow will serve as a means of maintaining the adsorptive cycle always performing heat exchange and mass, and the return flow, which flow against the enthalpy rotor will also serve as a means of promoting the dehumidification of process air. In the regeneration flow rates will be assessed the effects of low temperature heating and in both wheels will be evaluated the effects of different rotational speeds. Will also take place, procedures in order to verify the possibility of the wheel enthalpy work as a wheel desiccant . The findings contributed significantly to the climate control by adsorption systems is taken increasingly as a viable alternative to replacing conventional cooling.

Full textThis work aimed to evaluate the economical and technical efficiency of evaporative adiabatic cooling system (EACS) for intensive milk production. Its specific objectives were to evaluate thermal efficiency of chilling systems (aspersion and sprinkler) associated with forced air fan on productive traits, heat stress reduction, internal micro-climate, and economical advantages in relation to water and energy expenses. Experiment was carried out in a commercial dairy cattle farm located in a small city of São Paulo State. In each treatment were used 10 dairy-Holstein cows sorted according to their milk production and lactation order, in a free-stall system. Among these cows, five were selected for collecting physiological data (respiratory frequency, rectal temperature and temperature in white and black pelage) at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. during nine non-consecutive days. Other five animals were evaluated for their behavior (localization and activities inside facilities) through video-cameras from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during six days. Experimental period was twenty-eight consecutive days of November 2003, being the first seven days for animal adaptation and the last twenty-one for data collection. Climate data (relative air temperature and humidity, and dark globe temperature), in each treatment and outside of facility, were taken in intervals of 15 minutes during 24 hours by HOBO ® data logger, which permitted to calculate the Humidity and Temperature Index (HTI), Humidity and Dark Globe Index (HDGI) and Enthalpy (E). Fan with 2.5 m.s -1 of air mobility capacity associated to aspersion and sprinkler systems, were controlled by thermostat and distributed following feeder line of free-stall. Production variables considered were: milk production, feed intake, animal behavior, water and energy consumption of cooling system, and animal physiological traits. Data evaluation was realized in a completely randomized block design using in statistical analysis Tukeys test with 1% of significance level. General analysis of results was performed through SAS proceedings. Considering that treatments promoted similar feed intake (the difference was 3.0 kg DM.animal -1 .month -1 ), the chilling system associated to aspersion led to an increase (18.0 liters.animal -1 .month -1 ) in 3% milk production in spite of its higher consumption of water and energy (7535.7 liters.animal -1 .month -1 and 2.3 kW.h -1 .animal -1 .month -1 , respectively). As consequence, it was observed an increase of 4.7% in total mensal profit in relation to sprinkler system.

Full textThis studys main goal was to evaluate the influence of resources of climatization, fun and mist, on the physiology and the behaviour of Holstein cows housed in free-stall, during Brazilian southeast summer. Was used twenty Holstein milking cows in two experiments. In Trial one the effects of fun and mist were evaluated and in Trial II the influence of fun was analyzed. The environmental parameters registered were air temperature, relative humidity, black globe temperature and rain precipitation, and subsequently was computed the black globe temperature and humidity index. The physiological parameters evaluated were rectal temperature, tail basis temperature and respiratory rate. The behavioral parameters observed were activity, posture and animal position inside of stall. The obtainment of descriptive statistical for the physiological and behavioral variables was used the minimum square method. There were no differences in the physiological variables for both phases indicating thermal comfort. The behavioral responses indicated that the behaviour study is an important tool to evaluate the animal welfare. The climatization system with fun, with or without mist, can to promote an environment with more comfort, determining behavioral changes.

Full textAssemble the air conditioning by indirect vapor-compression, using refrigerant R134a, the principle of evaporative cooling direct cooling, was the subject focus of the work. The vapor compression cooling results in the delivery of air conditioning under conditions of comfort that can be changed significantly if we add the results, the conditioning by evaporative cooling. The observation of the experiments are bases on psychometric processes involved, combining the adiabatic saturation of air in the evaporative cooling effect of the combined refrigerator of the difference in enthalpy at the inlet and outlet of the evaporator in the conventional cooling cycle. It was possible to evaluate the reduction of the coefficient of performance and cooling capacity increase due to the increase of compressor speed. During the serial aligned pads evaporative cooling and vapor compression test, there was a decrease of the effectiveness evaporative cooler, when the air flow was added, in addition, it was increased the cooling capacity according to the association of the two systems, with no significant increase the power supplied.
