Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry distils the essentials of clinical practice. It balances a pragmatic approach alongside evidence-based clinical knowledge, guidelines, and protocols. It details how to take a history and perform an examination, moving on to discussing preventive and community dentistry, paediatric dentistry, and orthodontics. It thoroughly examines the subject of restorative dentistry through periodontology, tooth repair, tooth replacement, endodontics, and dental implants. It also explores oral surgery, oral medicine, and maxillofacial surgery. It reviews medicine relevant to dentistry, therapeutics, analgesia, anaesthesia, sedation, and dental materials. It explores law and ethics, professionalism and communication, and practice management, as well as syndromes of the head and neck, and also includes summary useful information and addresses. It is written for undergraduate dental students, dental foundation trainees, qualified dental practitioners, medical graduates and nurses involved in hospital dental specialities, and MJDF/MFDS trainees.

Abstract:
The immune system in relation to dentistry is the topic of this chapter. Non-specific body defences are explored. Then follows specific body defences, humoral and cell mediated responses; antibody types and their mechanisms of action and the clinical application in immunization. Inflammation, both acute and chronic, is explored in relation to infections of dental origin and their complications. Problems with the immune system and hypersensitivity follow. Normal oral flora and dental plaque and the body’s response in periodontal inflammation are explored. The final section deals with the implications of what has gone before for infection control in the dental surgery.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the topic of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and cosmetic medical (including surgical) treatments. One of the most concerning aspects of BDD from a clinical perspective is these individuals’ pursuit of non-mental health treatments—such as surgery, dermatologic treatment, and dental treatment—for a mental health problem. The prevalence of BDD among individuals who seek cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical treatments—especially rhinoplasty—is consistently higher than BDD’s estimated prevalence in the general population. Conversely, a high proportion of persons with BDD seek aesthetic procedures to improve their perceived appearance defects. The limited literature on changes in BDD symptoms and psychosocial functioning after these treatments suggest that outcomes appear to often be poor. BDD symptom improvement is rare and, at best, temporary; there also is risk for symptom exacerbation. Provision of cosmetic treatment for BDD concerns may also involve risks for both patients and clinicians. Taken together, these findings suggest that BDD is a contraindication for cosmetic procedures. The chapter concludes with directions for future research.

Abstract:
This textbook integrates clinical wisdom with empirical findings, drawing upon the history of communication science, providing a comprehensive curriculum for applied communication skills training for specialist oncologists, surgeons, nurses, psychosocial care providers and other members of the multidisciplinary team. This new edition presents a curriculum for nurses, which discusses needs of pre-registration to advanced trainees, including the ‘SAGE & THYME’ training programme, chronic disease, responding to depressed patients, the last hours and days of life, family care, facilitation training, and e-learning. The core curriculum ranges from breaking bad news, discussing risk and prognosis, achieving shared treatment decisions, responding to difficult emotions, dealing with denial, communicating with relatives and conducting a family meeting, helping patients cope with survivorship, deal with recurrence, transition to palliative care, and talk openly about death and dying. Modules offer guidelines about key skills, essential tasks, effective strategies, and scenarios for training sessions with simulated patients. The communication science section covers the history and models of communication skills training, the art of facilitating skill development, ethics, gender, power, the internet, audio-recording significant consultations, decision aides, and shared treatment decisions, medical student training, and enhancing patient participation in consultations. Specialty issues are explored, including enrolling in clinical trials, working in teams, discussing genetic risk, reconstructive and salvage surgery, among many other important issues. Variations in clinical disciplines are also discussed, including chapters for social workers, radiologists, surgical oncologists, medical and radiation oncologists, palliative medicine, pastoral care, pharmacy, paediatrics, and the elderly.

Abstract:
Born in 1908 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Michael DeBakey is the eldest of six children of Lebanese immigrants. He enjoys conspicuous academic success as a youth and then medical school, displaying intelligence and originality. DeBakey comes under the tutelage of surgery professor Alton Ochsner. He also spends a year training in Europe. Debakey and Ochsner publish important research papers. In World War Two DeBakey is assigned to the Office of the Army Surgeon General, where he excels in administration, rising to the rank of Colonel. He serves beyond the war’s end, contributing to the foundation of postwar federal medical research and veterans’ care. In 1948 he becomes Chair of Surgery at Baylor University medical school in Houston. The department focuses clinical and research efforts on vascular diseases, and leads a revolution in the surgical approach to these problems. DeBakey’s own family suffers from his devotion to his work. In the 1960s DeBakey’s fame grows. His lab pursues an artificial heart. Colleague Denton Cooley implants the first artificial heart with a device taken from DeBakey’s lab, and a forty-year rift between these two giants ensues. DeBakey becomes President, then Chancellor of the Baylor medical school. After the death of his first wife, he remarries in the 1970s. His fame and influence are worldwide. DeBakey operates on the Shah of Iran, and is consulted on the heart surgery of Boris Yeltsin. He is awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2008, and dies shortly afterward at age 99, a universally-admired legend.

Vogelnest, Larry, and Timothy Portas, eds. Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals. CSIRO Publishing, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486307524.

Full text
Abstract:
Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals provides an update on Australian mammal medicine. Although much of the companion volume, Medicine of Australian Mammals, is still relevant and current, there have been significant advances in Australian mammal medicine and surgery since its publication in 2008. The two texts together remain the most comprehensive source of information available in this field.
This volume is divided into two sections. The first includes comprehensive chapters on general topics and topics relevant to multiple taxa. Several new topics are presented including: wildlife health in Australia and the important role veterinarians play in Australia’s biosecurity systems; medical aspects of native mammal reintroductions and translocations; disease risk analysis; wildlife rehabilitation practices in Australia with an emphasis on welfare of animals undergoing rehabilitation; management of overabundant populations; immunology; and stress physiology. The second section provides updates on current knowledge relevant to specific taxa. Several appendices provide useful reference data and information on clinical reference ranges, recommended venipuncture sites, chemical restraint agent doses and regimens, a drug formulary and dental charts.
Written by Australian experts, Current Therapy in Medicine of Australian Mammals is clinically oriented, with emphasis on practical content with easy-to-use reference material. It is a must-have for veterinarians, students, biologists, zoologists and wildlife carers and other wildlife professionals. This volume also complements, updates and utilises the resources of other books such as Radiology of Australian Mammals (Vogelnest and Allan 2015), Pathology of Australian Native Wildlife (Ladds 2009), Haematology of Australian Mammals (Clark 2004) and Australian Mammals: Biology and Captive Management (Jackson 2003), all CSIRO Publishing publications.
