Abstract:
Background: Traditionally text mention normalization corpora have normalized concepts to single ontology identifiers ("pre-coordinated concepts"). Less frequently, normalization corpora have used concepts with multiple identifiers ("post-coordinated concepts") but the additional identifiers have been restricted to a defined set of relationships to the core concept. This approach limits the ability of the normalization process to express semantic meaning. We generated a freely available corpus using post-coordinated concepts without a defined set of relationships that we term "compositional con

Abstract:
Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. Autoimmunity is known to cause a wide range of disorders, and is suspected to be responsible for many more. Most autoimmune disorders are chronic and cause severe morbidity for the patients, and are also costly for society. A majority of these disorders are today considered as complex diseases with incompletely known etiology. Hence, model systems for studying the pathogenesis of autoimmunity are important to unravel its causes. Autoimmune Polyendocrine Syndrome Type 1 (APS-1), (OMIM 240300), is a rare a

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: A consistent care process, clear and concise medical documentation, and standardised nutrition terminology is beneficial for dietetic practice. The Nutrition Care Process (NCP), a contemporary framework to promote critical thinking and systematically address nutrition problems, and its terminology (NCPT, formerly known as IDNT) was developed to suit these purposes. However, this framework has not yet been adopted globally. The basis for this lack of adoption relates to difficulties in traditional face-to-face implementation, including a lack of local NCP experts, time constraints,

Normal karyotype pediatric B-cell precursor ALL patients are heterogeneous with respect to chemotherapy response, relapse rates and prognosis and the reason is unknown. These patients are treated with a standard protocol, and stratified using MRD methodology that shows they have variable responses and predicted outcomes. This study aims to determine the reasons behind such heterogeneity. This study shows that through miRNA profiling, miR-221/222 are differentially expressed in normal karyotype patients and are up regulated in Poor Responder patients. Abstract:
Early detection and treatment of stroke can save lives. Before any procedure is planned, the patient is traditionally subjected to a brain scan such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in order to make sure he/she receives a safe treatment. Before any imaging is performed, the patient is checked into Emergency Room (ER) and clinicians from the Stroke Rapid Assessment Unit (SRAU) perform an evaluation of the patient's signs and symptoms. The question we address in this thesis is: Can Data Mining (DM) algorithms be employed to reliably predict the occurrence of stroke in a patient based on the

In Australia, hospital discharge summaries created at the end of an episode of care contain patient information such as demographic data, medical history, various diagnosis, interventions carried out, medications and drug therapies provided to the patient. These discharge summaries not only serve as a record of the episode of care, but later converted into a set of clinical codes for statistical analysis purposes. The process of clinical coding refers to assigning alphanumeric codes to discharge summaries. In Australia, clinical coding is done using International Classification of Diseases, ve

Abstract:
An approach to biomedical language processing is to apply existing natural language processing (NLP) solutions to biomedical texts. Often, existing NLP solutions are less successful in the biomedical domain relative to their non-biomedical domain performance (e.g., relative to newspaper text). Biomedical NLP is likely best served by methods, information and tools that account for its particular challenges. In this thesis, I describe an NLP system specifically engineered for sentinel event extraction from clinical documents. The NLP system's design accounts for several biomedical NLP challe

The majority of clinical predictive models benefit from structured data in EHR (e.g., lab measurements and medications). Still, learning clinical outcomes from all possible information sources is one of the main challenges when building predictive models. This work focuses mainly on two sources of information
