Abstract:
Past research has investigated parameters of time-out such as duration, mostly with individuals with developmental disabilities. Existing research and popular parenting sources do not coincide in terms of the suggested duration of time-out. The current study sought to find the shortest effective duration(s) of time-out necessary to reduce sibling aggression in eight typically developing girls ages 3-7. The intervention took place in participants’ homes using a minute-by-minute incremental increase and reversal design. All participants reached a minimum reduction in sibling aggression of 60% af

Abstract:
A definitive association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative physical and mental health outcomes has been established. There is evidence that individuals in forensic psychiatric facilities are disproportionately exposed to ACEs, which may impact severity, prognosis, and age of onset of psychiatric symptoms, including behavioral concerns of institutional aggression, self-harm behaviors, and suicide attempts. Such psychiatric and behavioral concerns are often managed through multiple psychotropic prescriptions, leading to psychotropic polypharmacy. This study evaluated the

The general aim of the studies presented in this thesis is to investigate the possibility of using clinical data to measure outcomes in psychiatric outpatient services. The specific aims are to investigate whether routine clinical assessments and ratings are reliable and have adequate validity, and then to use these data to calculate treatment outcomes and explore factors that affect these outcomes.

The main result shows that ratings of global mental health made by clinicians in routine clinical work can be used to evaluate treatment outcomes in outpatient settings. While caffeine withdrawal has been well-characterized, research on caffeine intake and factors associated with withdrawal has been limited. The present study examined prevalence rates of caffeine use and identified psychosocial factors associated with having caffeine withdrawal headaches (CWH). Participants were N = 1,989 college freshmen who participated in the 2011 Spit for Science project. Caffeine use was reported by 80% of the sample. Females were more likely than males to consume caffeine, and soda was the primary source of caffeine for both genders. As hypothesized, daily caffeine users

The conceptual review analysed a small sample of the qualitative literature on couplehood and dementia. The analysis used Dialogic/Performance Analysis (Reissman, 2008) to provide critical commentary about the implications of participant voice, linguistic features and context in research papers, and how these may uncover possible narratives that are embedded in the literature. Implications of embedded narratives have been discussed. The researc

Tools for measuring competence in delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provide a means of assessing the training of new CBT therapists and ensuring the quality of treatment provision within routine practice, provide a framework for delivering formative feedback, promote ongoing self-reflection, and are essential to establishing treatment integrity in research trials. As such, identifying an optimal strategy for assessing the competence with which CBT is delivered is crucial to the continued progression of the field. However, research in this area has been somewhat limited to date. Th

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are neurodevelopmental disorders with multiple neurobiological aetiologies, which could be genetic, structural, metabolic or immune-mediated. ASDs are diagnosed with deficits in social communication and restricted and repetitive behaviours, and are associated with sensorial atypicalities. 30% of cases have co-existing epilepsy. A series of in vitro, in vivo and post-mortem investigations were undertaken to examine sensory atypicalities in ASD. In vitro characterisation of hippocampal neuronal cultures using immunofluorescence demonstrated the presence of multipl
