This thesis includes a literature review, empirical paper, and reflective paper, which explore different aspects of formulation within Clinical Psychology. Chapter one reviews literature to answer the question 'Why Formulate? Why not Formulate?' This review considers the idea that formulation is a defining skill within clinical psychology, before discussing the function, reliability and validity of formulating across differentsituations. Literature suggests that individual differences and client characteristics determine the focus of the formulation, as well as the amount ofinformation shared

Objective: Somatisation as a process suggests that mood changes are responded to physically rather than psychologically. This concept is linked to “medically unexplained symptoms”, including conditions such as chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. This study tested this proposal by measuring association between alexithymia and somatic symptoms and exploring whether experimentally induced mood changes are responded to by those with higher alexithymia scores with more physical than psychological sensation

Individuals who experience psychosis can internalise this stigma, resulting in self-stigma where an individual’s self-concept is eroded with a negative impact on recovery.
