Full textIn West Africa, suicidal behaviors, estimated once rare, are increasingly becoming frequent. Yet, in Southern Benin, previous studies at the National University Hospital have noted an increase in young adults’ suicide attempts and the lack of psychological assessment and support to the attempters, but also the need to take cultural interpretations into account. So, the question of the meaning and the care of suicidal acts arises with acuity. It is in this framework that our research is being carried out. The aim is to achieve a better psychodynamic understanding of young adults’ suicide attempts in Southern Benin, and to assess, in this particular context, the role of a psychoanalytically oriented psychologist. This is a qualitative study. The confrontation of psychoanalytic references with social anthropology elements or characteristics of the context is one of the main focuses of this work. The methodological procedure used for data collection includes a clinical intake protocol, which is adapted to the context and implemented to suicide attempters, and «anthropological encounters» as a way to open up local concepts of suicide in order to better identify suicidal issues. It appears from the clinical understanding that attempters are experiencing an identity crisis wherein the suicidal act represents a research of psychic overhaul. One can thus argue that some young adult suicide attempts in Southern Benin meet two movements of drive defusion and fusion. While screen-circumstances produce a traumatic experience which leads to self-destructiveness, the suicidal act is part of a drive fusion process and specific rearrangements in identity processes. This process, which I named here “psychic refondation” or “psychic rebirth”, is made possible by the clinical reception given to attempters after their suicide attempts. From this understanding arises a conceptual framework for clinical psychologists and relevant clinical settings to take care of suicide attempters in Southern Benin

Full textThe aim of this study is to provide a comparative portrait of the functioning of adults under 65 years of age and adults aged 65 and over during a rehabilitation stay following mild-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), as well as burden perceived by their primary caregiver. A sample of 546 adults who sustained a TBI was separated into two age groups and assessed during their stay in a rehabilitation institute. The differences between the two groups were examined for injuryrelated variables, premorbid functioning, psychological and cognitive functioning, functional status, and the level of burden perceived by the primary caregiver. These variables were collected by trained clinicians, using an evaluation grid developed for clinical purposes. The results show differences in the functioning between age groups. Compared to younger adults, older adults had milder injuries, less severe mechanisms of injury, shorter coma duration and less comorbid injuries. Nevertheless, inpatient rehabilitation duration was similar. Elderly patients showed greater cognitive impairment and significantly more functional impairment on several activities of daily living including preparation of simple meals, personal hygiene, management of healthcare and medications, outdoor walking, weekly housekeeping, shopping, and using community resources. They did not differ significantly from younger adults in terms of depression or anxiety symptoms or reported caregiver burden. These results underline the specific needs for older adults after rehabilitation for TBI and start to uncover the breadth of human assistance which may be needed to support community reintegration and optimal participation for adults who have suffered TBI in older age.

Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020SORUS038.
Full textIn France, ‘‘Missions locales’’ are public assistance sites for young people aged 16–25 years who are not in employment, in education or training (NEET). More than 1.4 million NEETs – i.e. ten to fifteen percent of the youth – participate in these sites each year. The main goal of ‘‘Missions locales’’ is to enhance both professional and social insertion – since education, employment, housing and health issues are inseperable. Several international studies have shown that NEETs have poor health status. In France, there were very few quantitative studies on this topic until the PRESAJE survey in 2011, which took place in five ‘’Missions locales’’. Based on data from this survey, we showed that the overall social profile of the NEET population was diverse, with more difficult living conditions than in the general population. Health-related vulnerability factors identified were: low education level; social isolation; insufficient health insurance; low self-esteem; and, low level of trust in institutions. Some of their health indicators were remarkably poor compared to other youth of the same age: more often, they had chronic disease, were overweight or obese, and their mental health status was poor. Despite their poor health, NEETs had less access to health care than the youth of the same age in the general population. This work also has highlighted the importance of having health sites inside ‘‘Missions locales’’. Social and preventive medicine consultations that are fully integrated into the social services for NEETs have an impact on their access to training (and we hope subsequently on their employment), and contribute to changing some of their health-related behaviours

Full textThis study explores the psychological problematic centered on traumas imposed by the double politico-religious power on young Iraniansbetween 20 to 35 years old The material used comes from interviews conducted in Teheran in 2007. The projective drawings usedwere specifically developed for this study and reflected scenes known to young Iranians, and were sufficiently significant and subjective to enable the expression of personal feelings, and the emergence of emotions. After an investigation of the theories related to these problems, the interviews are analyzed from a political, religious, social and cultural dimension of the traumas, the acculturation, the trends and transformation vectors of the cultural transmission andpassing on a forced culture by founding myths. Then analyze concerns: the Founding father viewpoint: from his organized downfall to his execution, the inter and intra psychic filiations conflicts with these two initiating father figures Cyrus the Great and Imam Ali, the disqualification of the family’s father, the totemiste organization of the power; the traumas endured daily and post-traumatic syndromes brought about by the revolution, war, martyr cult, whipping, public hanging, and permanent interaction with guardians of revolutionary order; the pathologies as a consequence of the regime: identity crises and disorders, psychosocial pathologies as diminished image of self, projected mask, melancholy, depression, and personality disorders. As a result today Iranian society is disrupted, uncontrolled, and chaotic, in search of its values, and its cultural and identification references. In spite of the intense sufferings the pervert political system not managed to define to Islam the identification references of the young people, or to circumvent their psyche

Full textAs a rule in order to treat the capacity or incapacity of individuals, law separates them in people who have came of age and minors. As a minor the subject is juridically incapable. As a person of age he is capable of all the acts of civil life. He may legitimately commit himself to a thirst party and answer for his acts. But is the separation between people of full age and minors absolute ? to remedy the anachronism of this principle, the legislator turns to exceptions. At times the attributes parts of capacity or just simply an anticipated majority when the subject hasn't yet reached 18, age of his majority ; at others he extends minority or some of its aspects when the subject has reached majority. Would these exceptions allow to presume the existence of an intermediate class between child hood and adult hood which would include young people from (15) 16 to 21 ? the link between older youngsters (15) 16, 17) and young adults (18 to 21) in certainly adolescence. But nothing allows to assert that adolescence, which is social historical reality, is or soon will become a juridical reality

Full textSecond dialect acquisition (SDA) may be defined as the process by which a geographically mobile individual adapts their linguistic practices to those in use intheir new environment, without learning a new language per se. Typically, this acquisition occurs at the phonetic level, as reflected in the intuitive idea that people who move away “change their accent”. Scientific accounts of SDA have only recently increased in number, as previous linguistic work has mostly focused on the practices of sedentary speakers. At the same time, pronunciation has long been thought to be settled from adolescence on. SDA is a widespread phenomenon given the increasing geographic mobility of individuals, although its phonetic outcomes are especially heterogeneous. Studies addressing this issue highlight the extensive array of factors that might explain why results vary across individuals and linguistic contexts. Internal factors such as the regularity of the rules that need to be learned, or external like the speakers’ integration to their new environment or concern to remain faithful to their origin, have been put forward. Depending on the theoretical perspective, SDA has been interpreted as an automatism, or as a process mediated by various aspects of the communication situation, the relationship between the speaker and their interlocutor, the frequency and recency of the phonetic properties of ambient speech, etc. This contribution is a sociophonetic study of SDA in Quebec. More precisely, 33 native speakers of Quebec French aged 18 to 22 were recruited upon enrollment in an undergraduate program at Université Laval. Eighteen of them were mobile speakers : they had just moved in Quebec City in order to start university, but were from somewhere else in the province. Born and raised in Quebec City, the 15 remaining participants were sedentary. On recruitment (T1), the speakers were recorded in a sound-attenuated booth while reading target words in isolation or inserted in carrier sentences. These target words featured all of the oral vowels of Quebec French in stressed syllable. The vowels were analyzed acoustically : their duration and the frequency and dynamics of their first three formants (F1, F2 and F3) were measured. The participants also completed questionnaires assessing their social integration, belonging to the socio-psychological phase of emerging adulthood and, for the mobiles only, faithfulness to their origin. The experiment was replicated a year later (T2). Results show that fine-grained acoustic changes occurred over time. The vowels moved closer to each other in the F1/F2plane. Frequency of F3 and formant dynamics decreased in some vowels. A reduction of the articulatory movements thus seems to have occurred. However, these changes took viplace in all speakers, whether they be mobile or sedentary. Neither of the other external factors taken into account (integration, emerging adulthood, faithfulness) could explain the changes. Therefore, we hypothesized that the way the participants perceived the experiment had evolved over time. As for the lack of more substantial phonetic shifts in mobile speakers, it could be explained by the short time span between the two experiments, since the first changes taking place during SDA do not usually happen at the phonetic level. Another possibility is that there are not enough dialectal features in Quebec City for the mobile speakers to change systematically, whereas, furthermore, the local population might not even be the main linguistic influence of university students. The mobile participants nonetheless proved aware of differences between their own speech and that of their new environment, suggesting that enhanced linguistic sensitivity may play a role in phonetic change. Further progress in understanding the link between speech perception and production mayalsoshed light on the mechanisms underlying the first stages of SDA. Our results add to those from a growing body of studies evidencing that a certain phonetic flexibility is maintained throughout adulthood.

Full textMany researchers of different theoretical approaches tried to evaluate the influence of the sibling bond on the development of the individual without succeeding in setting up a theory. Present research aims to work out an instrument intended to identify various dimensions constitutive of the sibling representations of the young adults, and to evaluate the degree of concordance between the representations of the siblings. For that, several questionnaires supposed to measure these various dimensions were used on sixty-six dyads of siblings. This research is, before-all, a contribution of the sibling representations domain : on the one hand, because it allowed a methodological progress from the validation of the questionnaires on a French population; and on the other hand, because it brought important qualifying statement in the knowledge of the sibling representations by the questioning of the analysis strategies of experienced authors

Full textThe advent of technology in neonatal care units has increased the survival rate of premature infants. However, there is still room to better understand the deleterious impacts of prematurity on the brain and cognition over lifespan, including the early adulthood that has poorly been studied to date. This thesis tested the mechanism of interhemispheric inhibition by the ipsilateral silent period (iSP) (reflecting the integrity of callosal function) and intracortical inhibition (ICI reflecting synaptic organization for planning the action) along with the cognitive function in young adults born prematurely (PT). A group of young adults born prematurely (PT, ≤ 33 weeks gestation) were compared to a group of young adults born at term (Term> 37 weeks of gestation, matched for age and education). iSP and ICI were tested with transcranial magnetic stimulation of the primary motor cortex of hand. As compared to the term group, the study 1 showed that PT had fewer occurrences of iSP (p < 0.0001), longer iSP latency (interhemispheric transfer, p=0.004) and shorter iSP duration (p < 0.0001). In study 2, less excitability in the nondominant hemisphere (p=0.001), and less ICI (37.5% in PT group vs. 100% in terms) was observed. This suboptimal regulation between hemispheres and intracortical motor function was parallelled by difficulties to sustain attention in PT as assessed by neuropsychological testing in the 3rd study. This thesis suggests that brain function known to be impaired in PT children and adolescents remained suboptimal at early adulthood and may explain some minor cognitive impairments detected. These brain indicators of a long-term influence of prematurity should be used earlier to test the efficacity of rehab programs on modules recognized to be specifically impaired in adulthood.

The functional value of the Preconscious will be studied by the meeting of 21 persons (17 to 33 years old) according to the economic prospects of school of Paris, thanks to Rorschach, TAT, the figure of Rey and the clinical discussion. The study notices the existence of a variety of psychic organizations within the disease. The recurrence of the symptoms leads a narcissistic fragility and checks the access to a firm, flexible and varied psychic functioning at the adulthood. The disease is like a constant traumatic weighting up on the psychosomatic economy. The patients treat the distress of death by denial, split or repression. The use of ways of caracterial, behavioural, somatic or external regulation permits to discharge excitements. Full textThis doctoral thesis aims to understand the daily Web practices of young adults, in relation to their learning through digital resources and tools. The context of this study is Colombia, a country where the integration of Internet in everyday life is a relatively recent phenomenon, but where youth are the largest group of users. We are particularly interested in young people between 19 to 25 years of age, undergraduate students and from middle classes in urban areas. From a communicational perspective, we propose an analysis of their learning as a process which is socially and culturally rooted and inseparable from their identity construction. First, we inquire about the spheres of socialization, the technologies, the usages, the social practices and the cultural values involved. Thus, we consider their digital practices as experienced and perceived by them in everyday life. The analysis also focuses on their online production practices, such as writing blogs or sharing in digital networks, as well as their cultural consumption on the Web. We highlight the active behavior adopted by young people to respond to the abundance, the diversity, the convergence, and the constant change of the media and technological offer. Finally, we examine the skills acquired and developed by them. We explore how they manage their own learning process and develop a reflexive attitude about their Web usage. Thereby, this work seeks to contribute to a better understanding of how digital resources and tools allow young people to acquire new social roles and, therefore, to build a new relationship to knowledge and culture

Full textThis thesis-dissertation is based on micro-sociological work dealing with young activists for Global Justice in France and in Germany. The method is based on both qualitative and quantitative studies, but also on participative observation, using a comparative approach and also a diachronic perspective. This thesis-research focuses on the evolution and careers of 18 activists within the Global Justice Movement (hereinafter GJM) including their past and present involvement in other groups. 472 French and German ATTAC-members were also surveyed in 2002 : this quantitiative data helps to situate the 18 activists' trajectories in a larger panel of Global Justice activists of different age groups and "political generations". These 18 activists were interviewed twice over a period of three years. The euphoria felt by them with the emerging of the GJM was studied in 2002. At that time and againn in 2005, a variety of factors affecting the careers of the activists have been considered, including the impact of biographical changes, the growing institutionalisation of certain organisations, and changes of political opportunity structures. This approach enabled us to study political defection, or shifting involvements -a less studied field of activism sociology-, as almost all of the 18 activists left the GJM during my thesis-research. These activists' careers also show the continuity existing between the GJM and previous organisational configurations. Until now this continuity had mainly been demonstrated at the meso-level -namely for collective and organisational filiations- and not much for individual careers

Full textIntroduction. Problematic Internet use is a risky behavior that shares a number of criteria with other addictions. Internet addiction was investigated and defined by Young, who created a measurement tool that is still valid today: the Internet Addiction Test (1998). Adolescents and young adults are considered to be particularly at risk. The objective of this research work is to study the clinical factors of problematic Internet use in adolescents and young adults.Methods. Participants. Three samples were constituted: (i) 998 adolescents and young adults (average age 17.89, ± 3.83); (ii) 602 adolescents (15.12, ± 1.23); (iii) 59 adolescents attending child psychiatry centers (15.78, ± 1.35). Material and procedure. Subjects completed self-report instruments related to Internet use and addiction, video game addiction, gambling (gambling disorder), food addiction, substance use (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis), personality traits, anxiety and mood disorders, and the probability of attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD).Results. The first study with adolescents and young adults categorized Internet use and other uses and addictions by age and gender. Internet and video game use declined with age, while the use of psychoactive substances (tobacco, alcohol) increased. The second study focused more specifically on Internet use and its relationship to personality traits. It revealed that subjects with problematic Internet use had low scores on Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, reflecting their tendency to be more conformist, antagonistic and impulsive. The third study with adolescents examined the links between Internet use and anxiety and mood disorders. The results indicate that adolescents with problematic Internet use had more depressive and anxiety symptoms. The fourth study shows that adolescents at risk of ADHD had a more problematic use of the Internet. The fifth study, based on a cluster analysis of the clinical factors, identified 7 profiles of Internet users. Of these, 3 concerned subjects with problematic Internet use: (i) without associated disorders, apart from gaming disorder; (ii) with addictions to psychoactive substances and behavioral addictions; (iii) with prevalent anxiety and mood disorders. The sixth study analyzed the problematic use of the Internet by adolescents receiving clinical care. They had a problematic Internet use associated with gambling disorder, but little use of video games. Compared to other adolescents, they had more addictions, as well as anxiety-depressive disorders and ADHD. However, if we only consider subjects with problematic Internet use, the differences in consumption and ADHD levels are no longer significant.Discussion and conclusion. This work confirms the value of studying clinical characteristics as factors contributing to problematic Internet use. There are psychopathological similarities between problematic Internet use and other drugs and behavioral addictions, thus supporting the inclusion of Internet addiction in international classifications. This research also identified profiles in which the addiction could be serve different functions. This opens up avenues for research, care and prevention of problematic Internet use

Full textMany studies, using information integration theory, have been devoted to the attribution of blame on the basis of degree intent and gravity of consequences information. The blame schema not having, to our knowledge, been subject to intercultural studies, we studied the form it can take in Burkina Faso adolescents and young adults. Results in general coincided with the integration schema found in western societies. The degree of blame attributed depended upon the degree of consequences noted and the degree of intention of the act, the two degrees simply adding their effects. Study of the reversibility of the blame schema was subsequently conducted with the same subject. Seven out of ten subjects showed reversibility of intent-blame association; they used both blame information to infer degree of intent and intent information to attribute blame. Six out of ten subjects showed reversibility of consequence-blame association. However no subjects used both consequences (or intent) information in a direct way to attribute blame in experiment 1 and in an inverse way to infer degree of intent (or gravity of consequences) in experiment 2, as implied by the reversibility logic. Rather, the modal Burkinabe subject attributed blame exclusively on the basis of intent, inferred intent exclusively on the basis of blame, and inferred gravity of consequences on the basis of intent except when there was no intent to harm in which case he/she inferred gravity of consequences on the basis of blame

Full textThe population of adolescents and young adults (AJAs - 15-25 years) with cancer represent approximately 1,700 new cases per year in France. Over The appearance of a potentially lethal cancerous disease during adolescence is affecting young patients at different levels. According to medical examinations, treatments and / or hospitalizations life is punctuated. School or professional activity are often suspended, postponed or even reworked. While in this period of development, adolescents try to separate themselves from their parents, emotionally, financially and socially, there is often a movement back to the parent figures. Moreover, the disease directly impacts the body which is, among other things, at the center of adolescents' concerns. Thus, adolescent problems are at the crossroads of the disease and the so-called "normal" development of the adolescent.Nevertheless, we know that adolescence is the first experience period in terms of romantic relationships, sexual relations and consumption of substances (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis). It is also a period conducive to addictions behaviors, such as video games and internet and eating disorders. The objective of this research is to describe alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consumption in a population of adolescents and young adults with cancer, as well as eating and online behaviors. This study also aims to describe and understand the experiences of these young people and the adaptive strategies they use to deal with both the announcement of the disease and treatments. A mixed methodology was used. The quantitative component uses a set of questionnaires evaluating coping strategies, depressive-anxiety symptoms, tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use, as well as eating behaviors and online behavior. This study proposes a cohort follow-up during the curative treatment phase (N 66); 6 months after the beginning of treatments (N20) where the initial adaptive strategies as well as the consumption and behavior of food and online are related. The qualitative component provides an exploration of the personal experiences of six young patients with disease and treatment using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Quantitative analyzes showed that the vast majority of participants did not exhibit symptomatology anxio-depressive during anti-cancer treatments and that they generally turn to oriented strategies problems (acceptance and positive reinterpretation). A minority of participants reported using alcohol (3%), tobacco (1.5%) and cannabis (4.5%). Participants claiming to have food disorder count for 9% of the sample, and finally, about 19% of participants report problematic use of the Internet with possible consequences. Six months after the onset of treatment, the intensity of anxiety-depressive symptoms tends to decrease. There are no significant differences between scores of lines at risk at T1 and T2 and the adjustment strategies remain unchanged between the first and the second passes. In the first few months of treatment, adolescents and young adults have no structured anxio-depressive symptoms. Their mode of consumption does not present any risks regarding adherence to anti-cancer treatments. Finally, the information gathered through this work, and in particular the qualitative analyzes, make it possible to understand better and apprehend the experience of young patients treated for a cancerous disease

Full textPhysical activity is a protective factor against cardiovascular (CV) events; this evidence has been established by the data of large epidemiological cohort studies over 30 years ago. However, since physical activity modifies favourably several cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, obesity), evidence is still missing to determine if this association, between physical activity and cardiovascular risk, is independent from the exercise-induced modifications in metabolic parameters. Our study evaluated, in young adults devoid of cardiovascular risk factors, the differences between sedentary and active individuals in arterial wall structure (a surrogate marker of cardiovascular risk). Our results suggest that apparently healthy young adults have a similar atherosclerosis burden whether active or sedentary.
