Abstract:

The Australian and New Zealand species of Clinocera Meigen are revised. Clinocera gressitti Smith is known from Campbell Island (New Zealand) and the following seven new species are recognised from eastern Australia: C. australiana, sp. nov., C. bickeli, sp. nov., C. irrorata, sp. nov., C. monticola, sp. nov., C. queenslandica, sp. nov., C. rubriventris, sp. nov. and C. spinosa, sp. nov. All species are described and illustrated. A key to species of Clinocera from Australia and New Zealand is provided and phylogenetic relationships and biogeographic patterns are discussed.

Clinocera guangdongensis sp. n., a new aquatic dance fly of the subfamily Clinocerinae (Diptera, Empididae) is described from China. Relationships with other described species are discussed. The species of Clinocera from China are keyed. The biogeographic distribution of the genus in China is discussed.

During the latter stages of revisionary work on the genus Clinocera Meigen (Sinclair in prep.), the type series of most species were examined. In an earlier paper Sinclair (1999) compared European and North American types of the C. appendiculata group, which resulted in several redefinitions and synonyms. In this short correspondence, the results of an examination of a series of specimens from the original type series of C. rufipes Bezzi and the remaining syntype of C. nigra Meigen are also reported

The Wiedemannia zetterstedti species group is revised after examination of all available type specimens and includes one new species (W. ulrichi Ivković & Sinclair sp. nov.) and four redescribed species (W. czernyi (Bezzi), W. longipennis (Mik) stat. rev., W. rufipes (Oldenberg) stat. rev. and W. zetterstedti (Fallén)). Eight new species of Clinocera Meigen from Thailand are described and illustrated (C. abbreviata sp. nov., C. areeluckorum sp. nov., C. courtneyi sp. nov., C. gracilis sp. nov., C. rostrata sp. nov., C. spatulata sp. nov., C. srisukai sp. nov., C. univittata sp. nov.). A key to Thailand species is provided. Distributions, phenology and biogeography are discussed. Several Thailand species also occur in Bhutan, China and Vietnam.
