Model theory can express properties of algebraic subsets of complex n-space. The constructible subsets are precisely the first order definable subsets, and varieties correspond to maximal consistent collections of formulas, called types. Moreover, the topological dimension of a constructible set is equal to the Morley rank of the formula which defines it.

In the United States alone, people consume and discard over 500 billion pounds of wastes annually. Wastes discarded in landfills create threats to land, air, and water, but also represent lost resources. Recycling has the ability to divert wastes from landfills and recover precious raw materials. However, recycling activities are only as efficient as the reverse logistics and supply chains that support them. These areas are relatively new, but successful implementations have real benefits for companies in terms of profits and environmental goodwill. Many companies are creating closed loop supp

This work deals with the closed-loop control of disturbances which develop linearly in laminar and incompressible flows. The control of both oscillator and amplifier flows is assessed. We consider a LQG control strategy in which the control law is computed using a reduced-order model of the flow. This reduced-order model is obtained by a Petrov-Galerkin projection. The first part is devoted to the stabilization of an open cavity flow which behaves as an oscillator. It is shown that the unstable subspace of the flow (the unstable global modes) and the input-output behaviour between the actuator

In this thesis we study Ax-Schanuel type inequalities for abstract differential equations. A motivating example is the exponential differential equation. The Ax-Schanuel theorem states positivity of a predimension defined on its solutions. The notion of a predimension was introduced by Hrushovski in his work from the 1990s where he uses an amalgamation-with-predimension technique to refute Zilber's Trichotomy Conjecture. In the differential setting one can carry out a similar construction with the predimension given by Ax-Schanuel. In this way one constructs a limit structure whose theory turn

Updating is done with the use of principal submatrices, and the method seeks the best parameters multiplying these matrices. This is a departure from classical model reference, and is closer to the formulation of sensitivity methods. The submatrices allow updating of the sti
