Heyam, Kit. The Reputation of Edward II, 1305-1697. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463729338.

Full text
Abstract:
During his lifetime and the four centuries following his death, King Edward II (1307-1327) acquired a reputation for having engaged in sexual and romantic relationships with his male favourites, and having been murdered by penetration with a red-hot spit. This book provides the first account of how this reputation developed, providing new insights into the processes and priorities that shaped narratives of sexual transgression in medieval and early modern England. In doing so, it analyses the changing vocabulary of sexual transgression in English, Latin and French; the conditions that created space for sympathetic depictions of same-sex love; and the use of medieval history in early modern political polemic. It also focuses, in particular, on the cultural impact of Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II (c.1591-92). Through such close readings of poetry and drama, alongside chronicle accounts and political pamphlets, it demonstrates that Edward’s medieval and early modern afterlife was significantly shaped by the influence of literary texts and techniques. A ‘literary transformation’ of historiographical methodology is, it argues, an apposite response to the factors that shaped medieval and early modern narratives of the past.

Soldani, Simonetta, ed. Enzo Collotti e l'Europa del Novecento. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6453-290-5.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging from a convention in honour of Enzo Collotti, this book traces his interests and fields of study. These gravitate around the tragic experiences of the Second World War, always played out in a perspective where the horizon is a Europe centred on Germany and on the lacerations that rippled out from Germany itself to embrace the entire continent with the consolidation of Nazism as a totalitarian power grounded in an ideology that was intrinsically reactionary and violently racist. There are six axes of investigation, closely intermeshed, addressed in the various contributions: socialism between the two wars; the lacerations of Germany; the European manifestations of Fascism; the experience of the Shoah, the construction of a shared historic memory of the dramas of the twentieth century and the problems of the Italian "eastern border".

Sierhuis, Freya. Politics, Imagination, and Desire in the Work of Fulke Greville. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199935338.013.142.

Full text
Abstract:
This article examines a number of the key political and philosophical questions in the poetry, drama, and philosophical treatises of Fulke Greville, first Lord Brooke (1554–1628), arguing that the philosophical complexity and linguistic obscurity for which Greville’s style is known offer an appropriate tool for the examination of some of his enduring intellectual preoccupations: the paradoxes of political power and the rise and fall of empires, examined in the choruses of his Ottoman closet drama Mustapha; and the examination of the mechanisms of idolatry and spiritual servitude that link the erotic poetry of the lyric sequence Caelica to the treatises on monarchy and religion. A Dedication to Sir Philip Sidney, Greville’s biography of his long-deceased friend, by contrast, offers a different perspective on political life and freedom, one that is constructed on Sidney’s exemplarity and modeled on the ethics of friendship.
