The world is facing a grave plastic waste problem. It is not new that we hear about oceanic death and morbid landfills. Only 8% of all the plastic produced is recycled in the US. This grotesque situation has been worsened by the Chinese ban of plastic waste imports from the developed western nations as of 2018. In this research we assess the feasibility of a novel approach to using existing e-commerce reverse logistics channels to take back post-consumer plastic. We use product sales data to estimate the post-consumer plastic volume. We then, design a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) based optimization model to assess different take-back routes and calculate various operational costs. In addition to the optimization model we determine the feasibility of this process by considering cost offsets such as price of virgin plastics. After that, we conduct a scenario-based sensitivity analysis to understand systemic cost and overall profit. We used the results of these analyses to formulate the strategic recommendations for companies interested in promoting or implementing e-commerce-based recycling programs. Finally, we assess the greenhouse gas emissions and corresponding externality costs through this process and perform a qualitative assessment of the stakeholder networks vital to making such a system operational. In conclusion, our results suggest that in certain scenarios it is economically feasible to facilitate a take-back process for post-consumer plastic using existing e-commerce-based reverse logistics channels while maintaining minimal additional emissions in the process.

During the past few years, blockchain technology has shown great potential to disrupt existing supply chain finance solutions, as it could increase the efficiency of invoice processing and provide a more transparent and secure transactions. However, the costs and benefits of implementing blockchain technology in supply chain finance for involved parties are still unclear, since research on the topic is scarce. This thesis explores the net value of implementing blockchain technology in supply chain finance arrangement by using cost-benefit analysis. A cost-benefit model and the operating processes of traditional and blockchain-based supply chain finance solutions are proposed and applied to a real-world case study. We prove that blockchain technology increases the total net benefit among involved parties participating in the supply chain finance arrangement as a result of improved efficiency of invoice processing. We also find that suppliers would benefit from blockchain-based supply chain finance if the benefit from the unlocked working capital outweighs the cost of the platform fee. Another finding is that the buyer does not benefit from the technology in terms of unlocked working capital.

Concerted efforts are being pursued by governments and economic institutions to promote the generation of startups, and copious documentation has been produced as guides for these emerging companies. However, little has been written on, e.g., the Operations and Supply Chain needs for Hardware Startups, and the development strategy of the required skills to build flexibility during the initial phases of startup development. This work proposes an initial road guide framework for hardware startups, resulting from the experiences of successful companies within the Robotics Cluster present in Massachusetts (either new ventures or spinoffs from existing companies). System Dynamics methodology is then used to capture causal loops, and to characterize the policies which would enable New Venture growth, so as to analyze the Supply Chain/Operations conditions for Hardware Startup Success. The work is presented in four main sections. The first section contains a bibliographic research to characterize the present conditions of Hardware Startups with special emphasis on the Massachusetts Robotics Cluster, providing an overview of the available resources for startups in terms of their skills development and especially with regard to their Operations/Supply Chain Skills development. A second section considered the directed interview of executives at existing robotics startups (Artaic LLC, Kiva Systems, Rethink Robotics and Boston Engineering) to obtain information regarding their strategic decisions in specific aspects of their Supply Chain and Operations. These interviews are reflected as case studies of these companies. The third phase is reflected as a proposal for a System Dynamics model, based on previous work in the area and complemented by aspects identified as relevant from the interviews. Lastly, the conclusions of this work will attempt to gather the main learnings from the analyzed cases, in terms of Operations/Supply Chain Skills development, laying down some directing guidelines for future Hardware Startup ventures.

Full textThe present research seeks to show the importance of applying process management techniques and food safety norms in the operational processes of the supply chain to know the meaning and the need for an integrated hybrid model. The article reviews the sugarcane distillery sector of Peru and its main operational problems. Based on the literature reviewed and discussed with academics who have knowledge of the food supply chain, an integrated hybrid model was developed to help any distillery with lower levels of competitiveness than its competitors in other sectors, such as pisco, applying techniques of process management and food safety to increase the efficiency of liquor distilleries. The findings confirm that distilleries can increase their efficiency, thanks to the higher performance of their operations after their alignment with the integrated model.

Full textControlling risks is an important issue for companies. Far from being only the prerogative of natural disasters, the disruptions of today's supply chains can sometimes be caused by minor events amplified by the flaws of increasingly complex industrial organizations, causing severe economic losses.Risk management in supply chains is a recent theme and the proposed solutions are not yet able to meet the needs of practitioners. One of the solutions to analyse risks is using simulation. But, despite its effectiveness to cover the complexity of the chain, it still presents a major weakness which is the difficulty of implementation.The aim of this thesis is to facilitate and to adapt the simulation for risk analysis of supply chains. Thus, we have developed a modeling framework for simulation which enables an easy construction of models of supply chain structure, behavior and if the associated risks. This is done through the proposition of a set of meta-models and libraries, defined on the basis of the SCOR reference model. In addition, we proposed a translation guide for the translation of the conceptual model of supply chains into a simulation model and enabling testing risk scenario. Additionaly, we developed a library of simulation modules.A case study was conducted and the results show the relevance of the proposed approach

As Boston Scientific's supply chain becomes more versatile in mixing their supply networks across divisions, there is new opportunity to re-optimize product flow downstream of manufacturing based on unique product attributes and network capabilities instead of solely legacy divisional flow. The current organizational structure, methods, and systems prompts product flow to be optimized within functional silos. However, there are no current methods or tools that readily enable management to evaluate the total system in an integrative manner or with respect to specific product attributes. This project aims to improve BSC's ability to determine optimal product flow by introducing a tool that optimizes across the downstream supply chain via an integrative perspective that accounts for product and network attributes.
The integration involves the major cost activities, such as freight, handling, and inventory costs, or what can be termed the total "Cost-to-Deliver" product from a manufacturing facility to end customers. The proposed optimization framework includes the inter-dependencies of cost drivers across the supply chain that are typically missed when solving in functional silos. We develop a decision support tool to determine optimal product flow across the various nodes within the downstream supply chain (manufacturing, sterilization, and multiple tiers of distribution centers) over a single period horizon that can be extend to multi-periods through a present value approach. This tool enables the decision maker to compare directly the trade-offs between two different constrained flows, as well as vary product parameters within this scenario comparison to uncover ideal product segmentation with respect to flow decisions.
To demonstrate the value for the tool, we used it to segment products with respect to the choice of transportation mode on a freight lane. We find that changing the standard transportation mode for several current products would yield five-year net present value savings of 10-35% of their current annual cost-to-deliver. Ultimately the insights gained, and framework leveraged, are relevant to other industries with multinodal supply chains with high-mix products and not just constrained to the Medical Device industry.

Full textA compreensão dos atuais processos produtivos é essencial neste momento em que o conhecimento tornou-se um importante gerador de valor. Uma visão holística dos conhecimentos que estão disseminados, de forma dispersa, entre profissionais, consultores e acadêmicos é necessária para a síntese de novas teorias da produção. Pesquisadores de gerência de operações freqüentemente usam mapeamento causal como um mecanismo para construir e comunicar teorias, particularmente em suporte à pesquisa empírica. As abordagens mais usuais para capturar dados cognitivos para um mapa causal são brainstorming e entrevistas, os quais exigem muito tempo e apresentam um significativo custo em sua implementação. Esta tese visa gerar uma metodologia (Metodologia Evocativa para Mapeamento Causal - ECMM) voltada para aplicação em pesquisa sobre gerência de operações para coletar e estruturar dados disseminados de forma desagregada, como conhecimento e experiência profissional e acadêmica, contidos nas opiniões de um grande número de especialistas dispersos demograficamente e geograficamente. Isto é alcançado evocando opiniões, codificando-as em variáveis e reduzindo o grupo em conceitos e relações. Tem-se uma especial preocupação em conseguir este objetivo em tempo factível e com baixo custo. A coleta de dados é assíncrona, via Internet, possui dois ou três turnos (à semelhança do método Delfos). A análise de dados usa codificação, técnica de grupamento hierárquica e escalamento multidimensional para identificar conceitos na forma de mapas cognitivos. A ECMM foi ilustrada com aplicações que demonstram sua viabilidade. Aplicou-se nas áreas de gestão da cadeia de suprimento (SCM) e administração de serviços (SM) com a participação de aproximadamente 1.300 respondentes de empresas e universidades de quase 100 países. Dentre os desdobramentos para pesquisas futuras propõe-se aplicar nas áreas de ECMM em SCM e SM visando a uni-las em um tema: gestão da cadeia de suprimento de serviços.
The understanding of the present productive processes is essential at this moment when knowledge became an important value creator. A holistic vision of the pieces of knowledge that are spread out and dispersed among practitioners, consultants and academics is necessary for the synthesis of new theories of production. Operations management researchers often use causal mapping as a key tool for building and communicating theory, particularly in support of empirical research. The widely accepted approaches for capturing cognitive data for a causal map are informal brainstorming and interviews, which require a time- consuming and significant cost of implementation. This dissertation aims at creating a methodology (Evocative Causal Mapping Methodology - ECMM) intended for use in operations management research for collecting and structuring dispersed data spread out as practical and research knowledge, and experience contained in the opinions of a large number of specialists demographically and geographically scattered. This is accomplished by evoking opinions, encoding them into variables and reducing the resulting set to concepts and relationships. A special concern is to achieve this goal in a feasible time and cost- efficient way. ECMM consists of two or three round, Delphi- like, Internet-based asynchronous data collection, and a data analysis that uses a coding panel of experts, hierarchical cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling for identifying concepts on cognitive map formats. Applications illustrate ECMM and demonstrate its feasibility. They were developed on supply chain management (SCM) and service management (SM) involving about 1,300 respondents of companies and universities of about 100 countries. Among possible unfolding future studies, this dissertation proposes to apply ECMM in SCM and SM aiming at unifying them into a single topic: service supply chain management.
