On March 2011 a destructive 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami along with nuclear explosions struck northeastern Japan; killing thousands of people, halting industry and crippling infrastructure. A large manufacturing company operating outside of Japan received the news in the middle of the night. Within a few hours of the tsunami hitting Japan, this manufacturer’s logistics team ran global materials management reports to communicate the precise status of the products originating from Japan to their entire global network of facilities. With this quick and far reaching communication the manufacturer was able to launch a successful contingency plan. Alternative suppliers, already existing as part of their global network, were evaluated and used to mitigate Japan’s disruptive impact. The resiliency of this manufacturer’s trusted network of supply chain trading partners allowed for minimum disruptions, saving countless money and maintaining continuity for its end-to-end supply chain. This manufacturer was part of a cloud-based supply chain that provided the catalyst to quickly shift its resources to allay the impact of no longer being able to receive product from Japan. Today's supply chains are global and complex networks of enterprises that aim to deliver products in the right quantity, in the right place, and at the right time in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable environment. To cope with internal and external supply chain instability and disruptions, supply chains need to be resilient to survive. A supply chain's ability to collaboratively share information with its supply chain partners is one of the most important factors that enhance a supply chain’s resilience. Cloud based supply chain management (SCM) creates a platform that enables collaborative information sharing that helps to identify, monitor and reduce supply chain risks, vulnerabilities and disruptions. However, supply chain academics and practitioners are at its infancy in understanding the capabilities of cloud based supply chains and its impact on resiliency. The goal of this dissertation is to explore how cloud based SCM make supply chains more resilient to disruptions. To achieve this goal the present research addresses the following fundamental research question: What is the impact of cloud based supply chain management (SCM) on supply chain resilience? To address this research question, this dissertation is comprised of three separate but interrelated essays. The first essay uses the systematically literature review (SLR) method to provide clear definitions of supporting constructs of supply chain resiliency (SCRES), classify the capabilities of SCRES, and identify existing research gaps and future SCRES research ideas. The second essay applies resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities as the theoretical lens to investigate the role of cloud based SCM in establishing SCRES. The second essay develops a theory-driven, conceptual model to illustrate and explain the relationships among cloud based SCM, SCRES, and the supply chain capabilities identified in the first essay. The third essay uses systems dynamics theory to develop two novel casual loop diagrams (CLD) and its equivalent systems dynamics (SD) models to quantitatively analyze the impact of cloud based information sharing on supply chain performance. A hospital supply chain is used as an illustrative example to show the positive impact on performance. Lead-time, inventory spend, and customer service levels are the comparative performance metrics used in this essay and are consistent with the findings of essays 1 and 2. One CLD and its equivalent SD model represent a traditional on-premise hospital supply chain information sharing platform and the other represent a cloud based hospital information sharing platform. The SD models simulate and compare the performance of the traditional and cloud based hospital supply chain platforms.

Multi-service outsourcing has become an important business approach since it can significantly reduce service cost, shorten waiting time, improve the customer satisfaction and enhance the firm’s core competence. In fact, on-demand cloud resources can lead manufacturers to improve their business processes and use an integrated and intelligent supply chain network. In addition, cloud manufacturing, as an emerging manufacturing system technology, will likely enable small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to move towards using dynamic scalability and ‘free’ available data resources in a virtual manner. Although there has been some research in these areas, there is still a lack of proper cloud based solutions for the whole manufacturing supply chain network. In addition, of the research papers studied, only a few reviewed and implemented the cloud based supply chain from a decision-making point of view, especially in suppliers evaluation and selection studies. Most studies only focused on cloud-based supply chain definitions, architectures, applications, advantages and limitations which can be offered to SMEs. Hence, a comprehensive research study to find an optimum set of suppliers for a number of goods and services required for a project within the cloud manufacturing context is necessary. Providing real and multi-way relationships through a suppliers selection process based on an intelligent cloud-based manufacturing supply chain network, by using the Internet, is the main aim of this research. The research has an emphasis on multi-criteria decision making approach. The proposed model is based on ‘Goal Integer 0-1 Programming’ method for the suppliers selection part and ‘Linear Programming’ method for the project planning part. The proposed framework consists of four modules, namely a) multi-criteria module, b) bidding module, c) optimisation module, and d) learning module. Learning module allows the model to learn about the suppliers’ past performance over the course of the system’s life. Average performance measures are calculated over a moving fixed period, results of which are stored in a ‘dynamic memory’ element as linked to the suppliers’ database. The methodological approach is validated based on a case study in the oil and gas industry, characterised by 29 services linked together in a network structure, 108 suppliers, and 128 proposals for the services. The case study covers a variety of services from designing to manufacturing and delivery. On the implementation side, a cloud manufacturing based suppliers selection system (OPTiSupply.uk®) is designed and uploaded on the virtual server of Amazon EC2. The system enables customers and suppliers to offer and receive various services on the Web. Apart from the user interface functionality, the system also allows interaction with the MS-Excel© based data and the associated mathematical programming.

Supply Chain Event Management (SCEM) bezeichnet eine Teildisziplin des Supply Chain Management und ist für Unternehmen ein Ansatzpunkt, durch frühzeitige Reaktion auf kritische Ausnahmeereignisse in der Wertschöpfungskette Logistikleistung und -kosten zu optimieren.
Durch Rahmenbedingungen wie bspw. globale Logistikstrukturen, eine hohe Artikelvielfalt und volatile Geschäftsbeziehungen zählt die Modeindustrie zu den Branchen, die für kritische Störereignisse besonders anfällig ist. In diesem Sinne untersucht die vorliegende Dissertation nach einer Beleuchtung der wesentlichen Grundlagen zunächst, inwiefern es in der Modeindustrie tatsächlich einen Bedarf an SCEM-Systemen gibt.
Anknüpfend daran zeigt sie nach einer Darstellung bisheriger SCEM-Architekturkonzepte Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten für eine Systemarchitektur auf, die auf den Designprinzipien der Serviceorientierung beruht. In diesem Rahmen erfolgt u. a. auch die Identifikation SCEM-relevanter Business Services. Die Vorzüge einer serviceorientierten Gestaltung werden detailliert anhand der EPCIS (EPC Information Services)-Spezifikation illustriert.
Abgerundet wird die Arbeit durch eine Betrachtung der Nutzenpotenziale von SCEM-Systemen. Nach einer Darstellung von Ansätzen, welche zur Nutzenbestimmung infrage kommen, wird der Nutzen anhand eines Praxisbeispiels aufgezeigt und fließt zusammen mit den Ergebnissen einer Literaturrecherche in eine Konsolidierung von SCEM-Nutzeffekten. Hierbei wird auch beleuchtet, welche zusätzlichen Vorteile sich für Unternehmen durch eine serviceorientierte Architekturgestaltung bieten.
In der Schlussbetrachtung werden die wesentlichen Erkenntnisse der Arbeit zusammengefasst und in einem Ausblick sowohl beleuchtet, welche Relevanz die Ergebnisse der Arbeit für die Bewältigung künftiger Herausforderungen innehaben als auch welche Anknüpfungspunkte sich für anschließende Forschungsarbeiten ergeben.

Attention is focused particularly on providing SaaS model of public applications delivery. The Cloud SCM implementation offers many advantages especially for small and medium sized companies. In this thesis I analysed the specifics of the deployment of Cloud SCM in highly unstable market environment, where a number of business partners share with each other relatively large amount of information. I identified factors of cloud computing, which have a significant impact on supply chain management. At the end of this thesis I analysed the trends of market supply, determined the leading providers of Cloud SCM and identified the specifics of selecting a suitable provider.

The forest industry has become more complex due in part to increasing global competition. The highly fragmented nature of the forest industry supply chain and lack of interaction between industry segments can cause major supply/demand inequalities. This fragmented nature can lead to unnecessary lead time and costly inefficiencies for business transactions. The objective of this research project is to develop the concept of using an Internet-based, Geographic Information System (GIS)-supported, optimized wood supply chain management system to overcome some of the current inefficiency problems. Currently many different forms of relevant supply chain management information can be found on the World Wide Web. Through review of Internet-related material, this project identified three classes of existing web resources relevant to the development of a forest industry supply chain management system: resource, market, and e-commerce sites. Internet information provides many of the basic data attributes needed in a supply chain management system. This project demonstrated that linking this data with geographic/spatial location (georeferencing) could add an extra dimension in the planning and decision making processes and will be a key development to push the boundaries of supply chain optimization. Within the forest industry, georeferencing of supply chain business entities can easily be done with GIS. Using GIS, members of the forest industry supply chain can be visually and spatially allocated to form a grand forest industry supply chain overview and specific business opportunities using this geo-referenced data platform can be developed. Although the technology exists to produce a high quality Internet-based supply chain network system, there are challenges in producing a system that is truly integrated among all industry partners. Technology obstacles, anti-trust regulation, reluctance to use the online platforms, and inaccurate information input and dispersal are some of the major issues facing a supply chain management tool that are discussed in this report. To demonstrate how a GIS-based supply chain management system could be implemented, three case studies have been presented to show how the proposed system would benefit the current industry in realistic situations. These include (1) a simple location-based search of consulting foresters, (2) a trucking logistic optimization, and (3) a quantitative resource assessment within a manufacturing facility procurement area. Case 1 demonstrates how geocoded landowner and consulting forester information can add efficiency in communication and services provided. Case 2 demonstrates that GIS paired with geocoded information gives a logger increased decision-making power by choosing the most profitable option in a choice between sawmills that includes transportation costs. Lastly, case 3 shows that by analyzing geocoded resource information, a manufacturer can make the proper decision of whether to expand or contract operations. In each case, added value was given to market players that were able to have analysis power through geocoded information. This information is not readily used at the present time and could potentially add value along many steps of the forest industry supply chain.<br>Master of Science

It is not new that we hear about oceanic death and morbid landfills. Only 8% of all the plastic produced is recycled in the US. This grotesque situation has been worsened by the Chinese ban of plastic waste imports from the developed western nations as of 2018. In this research we assess the feasibility of a novel approach to using existing e-commerce reverse logistics channels to take back post-consumer plastic. We use product sales data to estimate the post-consumer plastic volume. We then, design a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) based optimization model to assess different take-back routes and calculate various operational costs. In addition to the optimization model we determine the feasibility of this process by considering cost offsets such as price of virgin plastics. After that, we conduct a scenario-based sensitivity analysis to understand systemic cost and overall profit. We used the results of these analyses to formulate the strategic recommendations for companies interested in promoting or implementing e-commerce-based recycling programs. Finally, we assess the greenhouse gas emissions and corresponding externality costs through this process and perform a qualitative assessment of the stakeholder networks vital to making such a system operational. In conclusion, our results suggest that in certain scenarios it is economically feasible to facilitate a take-back process for post-consumer plastic using existing e-commerce-based reverse logistics channels while maintaining minimal additional emissions in the process.<br>by Saikat Banerjee.<br>M. However, the costs and benefits of implementing blockchain technology in supply chain finance for involved parties are still unclear, since research on the topic is scarce. This thesis explores the net value of implementing blockchain technology in supply chain finance arrangement by using cost-benefit analysis. A cost-benefit model and the operating processes of traditional and blockchain-based supply chain finance solutions are proposed and applied to a real-world case study. We prove that blockchain technology increases the total net benefit among involved parties participating in the supply chain finance arrangement as a result of improved efficiency of invoice processing. We also find that suppliers would benefit from blockchain-based supply chain finance if the benefit from the unlocked working capital outweighs the cost of the platform fee. This dissertation explores data fusion methodology to deduce an overall inference from the data gathered from multiple heterogeneous sources. Typically, if there existed a data source in which the data were reliable and unbiased, then data fusion would not be necessary. Data fusion methodology combines data form multiple diverse sources so that the desired information - such as the population mean - is improved despite redundancies, inaccuracies, biases, and inflated variability in the data. Examples of data fusion include estimating average demand from similar sources, and integrating fatality counts from different media sources after a catastrophe. The approach in this study combines "inputs" from distinct sources so that the information is "fused." Another way of describing this process is "data integration." Important assumptions are 1. Several sources provide "inputs" for information used to estimate parameters of a probability distribution. 2. Since distributions for the data from the sources are heterogeneous, some sources are less reliable. 3. Distortions, bias, censorship, and systematic errors may be more prominent in data from certain sources. 4. The sample size of sources data, number of "inputs," may be very small. Examples of information from multiple sources are abundant: traffic information from sensors at intersections, multiple economic indicators from various sources, demand data for product using similar retail stores as sources, polling data from various sources, and disaster count of fatalities from different media sources after a catastrophic event. This dissertation seeks to address a gap in the operations literature by addressing three research questions regarding entropy base data fusion (EBDF) approaches to estimation. Three separate, but unifying, essays address the research questions for this dissertation. Essay 1 provides an overview of supporting literature for the research questions. A numerical analysis of airline maximum wait time data illustrates the underlying issues involved in EBDF methods. This essay addresses the research question: Why consider alternative entropy-based weighting methods? Essay 2 introduces 13 data fusion methods. A Monte Carlo simulation study examines the performance of these methods in estimating the mean parameter of a population with either a normal or lognormal distribution. This essay addresses the following research questions: 1. Can an alternative formulation for Shannon's entropy enhance the performance of Sheu (2010)'s data fusion approach? 2. Do symmetric and skewed distributions affect the 13 data fusion methods differently? 3. Do negative and positive biases affect the performance of the 13 methods differently? 4. Do entropy based data fusion methods outperform non-entropy based data fusion methods? 5. Which data fusion methods are recommended for symmetric and skewed data sets when no bias is present? What is the recommendation under conditions of few data sources? Essay 3 explores the use of the data fusion method estimates of the population mean in a newsvendor problem. A Monte Carlo simulation study investigates the accuracy of the using the estimates provided in Essay 2 as the parameter estimate for the distribution of demand that follows an exponential distribution. This essay addresses the following research questions: 1. Do data fusion methods with relatively strong performance in estimating the parameter mean estimate also provide relatively strong performance in estimating the optimal demand under a given ratio of overage and underage costs? 2. Do any of the data fusion methods deteriorate or improve with the introduction of positive and negative bias? 3. Do the alternative entropy formulations to Shannon's entropy enhance the performance of the methods on a relative basis? 4. Is the relative rank ordering performance of the data fusion methods different in Essay 2 and Essay 3 in the resulting performances of the methods? The contribution of this research is to introduce alternative EBDF methods, and to establish a framework for using EBDF methods in supply chain decision making. A comparative Monte Carlo simulation analysis study will provide a basis to investigate the robustness of the proposed data fusion methods for estimation of population parameters in a newsvendor problem with known distribution, but unknown parameter. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to determine the effect of multiple sources, sample size, and distributions.

The research also relied on information sources from researchers with experience in the assessment and analysis of the perishable food supply chain in different scenarios worldwide.

Which form of exchange governance performs better in a dynamic environment? This remains an unanswered question in the transaction cost analysis (TCA) and relational exchange literatures. Some researchers purport that transactional governance provides superior performance by providing firms the flexibility to change suppliers. Others suggest that relational governance leads to superior performance because of the willingness of both parties to adapt. Reviews of TCA have turned up ambivalent empirical findings with regard to the effects of uncertainty despite a track record of strong empirical support for other predictions. Because most of TCA and relational exchange theories' predictions enjoy strong support, this research builds upon these theories to propose a theoretical modeling framework for a dynamic environment in a supply chain network (SCN) setting. This dissertation extends TCA and relational exchange to a dynamic, network environment. It uses the approach of building a simulation in order to study in detail the relationship between key exchange factors and the selection of transactional and relational exchange governance over time. This research effort extended TCA theory with a complex adaptive model of supply chain network governance evolution that attempts to link environmental, network, production, firm and exchange factors in a continuously evolving loop. The proposed framework expands transaction cost analysis' explanatory power. Results partially support past scholarly proposal that uncertainty functions as an antecedent of asset specificity rather than as an independent construct affecting governance outcome dependent upon which form of uncertainty is being considered. The successful simulation of supply chain networks as complex adaptive systems shift the focus from deterministic, confirmatory models of exchange to an exploratory, positive model. Instead of exchange governance as an outcome, it is the catalyst of the evolutionary process.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is becoming increasingly important in the modern business world. In order to effectively manage and integrate a supply chain (SC), a deep understanding of overall SC operation dynamics is needed. This involves understanding how the decisions, actions and interactions between SC members affect each other, and how these relate to SC performance and SC disruptions. Achieving such an understanding is not an easy task, given the complex and dynamic nature of supply chains. Existing simulation approaches do not provide an explanation of simulation results, while related work on SC disruption analysis studies SC disruptions separately from SC operation and performance. This thesis presents a logic-based approach for modelling, simulating and explaining SC operation that fills these gaps. SC members are modelled as logicbased intelligent agents consisting of a reasoning layer, represented through business rules, a process layer, represented through business processes and a communication layer, represented through communicative actions. The SC operation model is declaratively formalised, and a rule-based specification is provided for the execution semantics of the formal model, thus driving the simulation of SC operation. The choice of a logic-based approach enables the automated generation of explanations about simulated behaviours. SC disruptions are included in the SC operation model, and a causal model is defined, capturing relationships between different types of SC disruptions and low SC performance. This way, explanations can be generated on causal relationships between occurred SC disruptions and low SC performance. This approach was analytically and empirically evaluated with the participation of SCM and business experts. The results indicate the following: Firstly, the approach is useful, as it allows for higher efficiency, correctness and certainty about explanations of SC operation compared to the case of no automated explanation support. Secondly, it improves the understanding of the domain for non-SCM experts with respect to their correctness and efficiency; the correctness improvement is significantly higher compared to the case of no prior explanation system use, without loss of efficiency. Thirdly, the logic-based approach allows for maintainability and reusability with respect to the specification of SC operation input models, the developed simulation system and the developed explanation system.

However, the workflow systems that are currently used are embedded with fixed business rules that cannot be easily adjusted by users, resulting in the inability of users to make adjustments to the business rules, so as to satisfy changed requirements and deal with high cost of business management and low efficiency. Therefore, it is highly desirable for users of workflow systems, especially retail supply chain companies, to employ a new type of systems that can be easily adjusted by end users themselves when required.Solution: The rule-based workflow system architecture for the management of retail supply chain business process is recommended. In such architecture, the business rules can be separated from the system logic and managed by users via a friendly interface. The rule-based workflow systems can greatly enhance the system efficiency and lower maintenance cost, as compared with the traditional workflow system or other similar information systems. And the efficiency of retail supply chain business process management can be greatly enhanced by employing rule-based workflow systems.Methods: Two main research problems and four sub-research problems, which serve as the guidance to conduct related research work, have been identified. The research work has been divided into the theoretical part and the empirical part. In the theoretical part, the theory of rule base establishment and rule-based workflow system architecture are discussed. In the empirical part, data analysis as well as prototype design are conducted by employing both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Attempts are also made to verify the theories suggested in the theoretical part by means of empirical research. Based on both theoretical and empirical research, attempts are made to find solutions to the research questions. In general, this thesis arms at providing references for the future research related to rule-based workflow system management in retail supply chain management. The thesis also aims to provide references for the practical use of rule-based systems in the retail supply chain field with such issues as system development and maintenance, especially for the system of complex and changeable business processes. The field of Logistics and Supply Chain Management (LSCM) suggests that transactions, collaboration, and value are important in the supply and delivery of products and services to meet the need of impoverished end-consumers. In many cases, the application of LSCM is paramount in most strategic decision-making efforts. Therefore, this research explores the applications of LSCM processes and activities within the community-based context. The methodology used to address the research questions consisted of a hybrid of mixed methods. This mixed methodology provides three essays that investigate the application and development of LSCM in the community-based context. The essays address the flow of charitable products and services through supply chains. The dissertation does not pay close attention to the first-tier suppliers’ suppliers, which is looking at the originating flow of goods and services (raw materials, manufacturing, etc.). However, the dissertation puts a focus on products and services supplied to focal organizations and how these products are then passed on to end-consumers. Essay I looks at the transaction (costs) that ensue from the supply of charitable products. Essay II analyzes a social service ecosystem and investigates how the network of organizations enable the distribution of charitable products and services. Lastly, Essay III examines the delivery of valuable services to the end-consumers, and what tools Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs) should focus on to develop and retain end-consumers in impoverished communities. The research provides conceptual models that review some fundamental LSCM achievement gaps in supplying, delivering and providing social services to end users within impoverished communities. The dissertation draws upon literature from the fields of economics, marketing, social science, and logistics and supply chain management. The dissertation uses the primary research method of unstructured and semi-structured interviews, case studies, written survey instruments and system dynamics within three studies. The studies resolve to look into the term Community-Based Logistics and Supply Chain Management (CBLSCM) as employed by social service providers in the logistics and supply chain context and investigate how it applies to impoverished communities. The research identifies conceptual models that can be used to explain the role of LSCM within humanitarian aid context. The models offer insights on the managerial implications and evidence of using LSCM processes and techniques within impoverished communities. The research has considered that the type of transactional relationships, structure, shared value, service systems, and consumer value, retention and management mechanisms can be achieved utilizing LSCM.

The article reviews the sugarcane distillery sector of Peru and its main operational problems. Based on the literature reviewed and discussed with academics who have knowledge of the food supply chain, an integrated hybrid model was developed to help any distillery with lower levels of competitiveness than its competitors in other sectors, such as pisco, applying techniques of process management and food safety to increase the efficiency of liquor distilleries. Performance-based contracting (PBC) redefines the relationships between suppliers and buyers and differs from traditional contracting approaches with its reward/payment scheme, emphasis on the performance outcomes, increased supplier autonomy, and transfer of risk and responsibilities to suppliers. Given the 70% of life cycle costs of products/systems reside in sustainment, PBC has led to substantial improvements in availability, maintainability, reliability, and thus total cost of ownership of systems/products. Though PBC has changed the way of doing business and its presence has increased across multiple industry, private and public sectors, for profit and not-for-profit, its implications on various aspects of logistics and supply chain management have been understudied. It is important to explore and establish evidence regarding these implications through academic rigor. Therefore, this three-essay dissertation aims to give some insight regarding structural and behavioral implications of PBC using a multi-method approach. Specifically, it (1) explores the relationship between PBC and supply chain resilience (SCRES), (2) examines the supplier goal commitment (i.e., motivation) in PBC, (3) proposes a mathematical model to find optimal contract length, periodic contract price and investment that concurrently maximizing supplier profit and satisfying buyer requirements. This dissertation offers theoretical and managerial contributions as well.

Nombreux sont les exemples de ces perturbations avec des conséquences économiques graves.La gestion des risques dans les chaines logistiques est un thème récent et les méthodes et outils actuels ne répondent pas encore totalement aux préoccupations des gestionnaires de ces chaînes logistiques. Une grande aide peut être apportée par la simulation des événements affectant les chaînes. Cependant malgré son efficacité pour couvrir la complexité de la chaîne, la simulation reste encore difficile à mettre en œuvre, notamment dans les phases de création et d’exploitation des modèles.Le but de cette thèse est de faciliter l’utilisation de la simulation pour l’analyse des risques dans les chaines logistiques. Ainsi, nous avons développé un référentiel de modélisation pour la simulation qui permet d’assurer une construction facile des modèles de la structure, du comportement et des risques inhérents aux chaines logistiques. Ce référentiel est bati sur un ensemble de metamodèles et de bibliothèques adaptés à la définition de chaînes logistiques et définis sur la base du référentiel SCOR. Ajouté à cela, nous avons proposé un guide de traduction permettant le passage d’un modèle conceptuel de chaîne logistique vers un modèle de simulation permettant de tester les scénarios de risque. Far from being only the prerogative of natural disasters, the disruptions of today's supply chains can sometimes be caused by minor events amplified by the flaws of increasingly complex industrial organizations, causing severe economic losses.Risk management in supply chains is a recent theme and the proposed solutions are not yet able to meet the needs of practitioners. One of the solutions to analyse risks is using simulation. But, despite its effectiveness to cover the complexity of the chain, it still presents a major weakness which is the difficulty of implementation.The aim of this thesis is to facilitate and to adapt the simulation for risk analysis of supply chains. Thus, we have developed a modeling framework for simulation which enables an easy construction of models of supply chain structure, behavior and if the associated risks. This is done through the proposition of a set of meta-models and libraries, defined on the basis of the SCOR reference model. In addition, we proposed a translation guide for the translation of the conceptual model of supply chains into a simulation model and enabling testing risk scenario. The paper considers how the agile concept can be included in the User Driven Design framework. This design method combines requirements and constraints of users and stakeholders. The agile concept can be treated as one of the requirements, which should be considered differently by various users and stakeholders. The design process depends on the application fields and has to be implemented accordingly to their characteristics. The case study of this research is a monitoring and management system that enables an adaptation of the conventional dairy supply chain to the agile supply chain strategy. Due to the personalised needs of every milk supplier and daily variation of the milk production, the efficient dairy supply chain requires a real-time data regarding adaptations to the changes. The system should accommodate not only changes dependent on external environmental conditions, but also unpredictable internal circumstances. The agile-based supply chain could help to maintain the high responsiveness and flexibility among the dairy plant, transportation provider and milk suppliers. An engineering solution evaluates the agile strategy. It includes hardware and software, which monitor and manage transportation as a part of the dairy supply chain. The solution is implemented and tested at a medium-sized dairy company.

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to knowledge in the form of a new theory for supply chain strategy formulation. The objective is to design evaluation criteria, specific to the context of greenfield project architecture and integration design. This study addressed the aim and objective by synthesising existing methods and techniques which are outlined into a research framework of supply chain strategy problems. The study applied the case study and action research methods to pursue conceptual validity from the process of investigating the supply chain strategy formulation in a specific situation and presented the data collection and analysis process. The thesis derived a conceptual framework for investigating and identifying the relationship between multiple elements, dimensions, forces and factors that influence and affect supply chain strategy formulation in a greenfield project context, specific to the mining industry. The contribution to knowledge emerged from building upon the architecture of the conceptual framework, through synthesising existing techniques and adapting these techniques, to extend and redefine the existing knowledge on the practice of supply chain strategy formulation. Through critical analysis, a number of critical problems emerged and the process of addressing these problems, resulted with a new framework for evaluating the relationship between business and supply chain strategy, specific to greenfield project and integration context. The contribution to knowledge also derived from addressing the emerging obstacles in the process of identifying, defining and formulating, the visions and goals of individual supply chain participants from implicit into an explicit form. The process synthesised the knowledge for conceptualising the idea, through developing and evaluating information and issues, to derive insights into the complex and abstract concept, of greenfield project business and supply chain strategy formulation. The conceptual framework and evaluation framework advanced into designing greenfield project supply chain integration strategy. The process involved categorising individual supply chain strategic interests, decisions and problems into formulation areas, and was aimed at defining the process of greenfield project integration strategy as a system of concepts containing formulation areas, formulation principles, segregated into subcategories of formulation imperatives and formulation concepts. The thesis contributed to knowledge with advancement of the design engineering method, which enables visualisation of the supply chain strategy evaluation process. The design is not personalised for individual company business strategy or supply chain strategy formulation. The method was personalised to evaluate the integration of individual goals, and concepts in a supply chain strategy formulation. The novelty that emerged from the thesis was a conceptual framework for greenfield project architecture and integration design. The greenfield project architecture and design derived in the thesis a proposed conceptual system for applying the conceptual framework and the evaluation criteria.

The current organizational structure, methods, and systems prompts product flow to be optimized within functional silos. However, there are no current methods or tools that readily enable management to evaluate the total system in an integrative manner or with respect to specific product attributes. This project aims to improve BSC's ability to determine optimal product flow by introducing a tool that optimizes across the downstream supply chain via an integrative perspective that accounts for product and network attributes.<br>The integration involves the major cost activities, such as freight, handling, and inventory costs, or what can be termed the total "Cost-to-Deliver" product from a manufacturing facility to end customers. The proposed optimization framework includes the inter-dependencies of cost drivers across the supply chain that are typically missed when solving in functional silos. We develop a decision support tool to determine optimal product flow across the various nodes within the downstream supply chain (manufacturing, sterilization, and multiple tiers of distribution centers) over a single period horizon that can be extend to multi-periods through a present value approach. This tool enables the decision maker to compare directly the trade-offs between two different constrained flows, as well as vary product parameters within this scenario comparison to uncover ideal product segmentation with respect to flow decisions.<br>To demonstrate the value for the tool, we used it to segment products with respect to the choice of transportation mode on a freight lane. We find that changing the standard transportation mode for several current products would yield five-year net present value savings of 10-35% of their current annual cost-to-deliver. Grounded in a conceptual framework of activity-based costing, the purpose of this case study was to explore strategies used by 5 upper-level supply chain management leaders at a maintenance repair and overhaul company in the aviation industry in the Southeastern United States to accurately forecast procurement costs. Data collection included 5 semistructured interviews, company documents, and annual reports. Through thematic analysis, the major themes that emerged from the data analysis were accuracy, competitive advantage, improved corporate performance, and improved total cost analysis. The findings may contribute to social change in the Southeastern region of the United States. The aviation industry is experiencing competition from low-cost countries and the economy of the region and hundreds of families and educational institutions depend on the success of the companies in the region for sustainability.

COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>A compreensão dos atuais processos produtivos é essencial
neste momento em que o conhecimento tornou-se um importante
gerador de valor. Uma visão holística dos conhecimentos que
estão disseminados, de forma dispersa, entre profissionais,
consultores e acadêmicos é necessária para a síntese de
novas teorias da produção. Pesquisadores de gerência de
operações freqüentemente usam mapeamento causal como um
mecanismo para construir e comunicar teorias,
particularmente em suporte à pesquisa empírica. As
abordagens mais usuais para capturar dados cognitivos
para um mapa causal são brainstorming e entrevistas, os
quais exigem muito tempo e apresentam um significativo
custo em sua implementação. Esta tese visa gerar uma
metodologia (Metodologia Evocativa para Mapeamento Causal -
ECMM) voltada para aplicação em pesquisa sobre gerência de
operações para coletar e estruturar dados disseminados de
forma desagregada, como conhecimento e experiência
profissional e acadêmica, contidos nas opiniões de um grande
número de especialistas dispersos demograficamente e
geograficamente. Isto é alcançado evocando opiniões,
codificando-as em variáveis e reduzindo o grupo em
conceitos e relações. Tem-se uma especial preocupação em
conseguir este objetivo em tempo factível e com baixo custo.
A coleta de dados é assíncrona, via Internet, possui dois
ou três turnos (à semelhança do método Delfos). A análise
de dados usa codificação, técnica de grupamento hierárquica
e escalamento multidimensional para identificar conceitos
na forma de mapas cognitivos. A ECMM foi ilustrada com
aplicações que demonstram sua viabilidade. Aplicou-se nas
áreas de gestão da cadeia de suprimento (SCM) e
administração de serviços (SM) com a participação de
aproximadamente 1.300 respondentes de empresas e
universidades de quase 100 países. Dentre os desdobramentos
para pesquisas futuras propõe-se aplicar nas áreas de ECMM
em SCM e SM visando a uni-las em um tema: gestão da cadeia
de suprimento de serviços.<br>The understanding of the present productive processes is
essential at this moment when knowledge became an important
value creator. A holistic vision of the pieces of knowledge
that are spread out and dispersed among practitioners,
consultants and academics is necessary for the synthesis of
new theories of production. Operations management
researchers often use causal mapping as a key tool for
building and communicating theory, particularly in support
of empirical research. The widely accepted approaches for
capturing cognitive data for a causal map are informal
brainstorming and interviews, which require a time-
consuming and significant cost of implementation. This
dissertation aims at creating a methodology (Evocative
Causal Mapping Methodology - ECMM) intended for use in
operations management research for collecting and
structuring dispersed data spread out as practical and
research knowledge, and experience contained in the
opinions of a large number of specialists demographically
and geographically scattered. This is accomplished by
evoking opinions, encoding them into variables and reducing
the resulting set to concepts and relationships. A special
concern is to achieve this goal in a feasible time and cost-
efficient way. ECMM consists of two or three round, Delphi-
like, Internet-based asynchronous data collection, and a
data analysis that uses a coding panel of experts,
hierarchical cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling
for identifying concepts on cognitive map formats.
Applications illustrate ECMM and demonstrate its
feasibility. They were developed on supply chain management
(SCM) and service management (SM) involving about 1,300
respondents of companies and universities of about 100
countries. Among possible unfolding future studies, this
dissertation proposes to apply ECMM in SCM and SM aiming at
unifying them into a single topic: service supply chain
management.

The relaxation of international boundaries has enabled the globalisation of
markets making available an ever increasing number of specialised suppliers
and markets. Inevitably this results in supply chains sharing suppliers and
customers reflected in a network of relationships.
Within this context firms buyers configure their supply relationships based on
their perception of supply risk. Risk is managed by either increasing trust or
commitment or by increasing the number of suppliers. Increasing trust and
commitment facilitates collaboration and reduces the propensity for a supplier to
exit the relationship. Conversely, increasing the number of suppliers reduces
dependency and increases the ease of making alternative supply
arrangements.
The emergent network of relationships is dynamic and complex, and due in no
small part to the influence of inventory management practices, tightly coupled.
This critical organization of the network describes a system that contrary to
existing supply chain conceptualisation exists far from equilibrium, requiring a
different more appropriate theoretical lens through which to view them.
This thesis adopts a Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) perspective to position
supply networks as tightly coupled complex systems which according to Normal
Accident Theory (NAT) are vulnerable to disruptions as a consequence of
normal operations. The consequential boundless and emergent nature of supply
networks makes them difficult to research using traditional empirical methods,
instead this research builds a generalised supply network agent based
computer model, allowing network constituents (agents) to take autonomous
parallel action reflecting the true emergent nature of supply networks.
This thesis uses the results from a series of carefully designed computer
experiments to elucidate how supply networks respond to a variety of market
structures and permitted agent behaviours. Market structures define the vertical
(between tier) and horizontal (within tier) levels of price differentiation. Within
each structure agents are permitted to autonomously modify their prices
(constrained by market structure) and collaborate by sharing demand
information.
By examining how supply networks respond to different permitted agent
behaviours in a range of market structures this thesis makes 4 contributions.
Firstly, it extends NAT by incorporating the adaptive nature of supply network
constituents. Secondly it extends supply chain management by specifying
supply networks as dynamic not static phenomena. Thirdly it extends supply
chain risk management through developing an understanding of the impact
different permitted behaviour combinations on the networks vulnerability to
disruptions in the context of normal operations. Finally by developing the
understanding how normal operations impact a supply networks vulnerability to
disruptions it informs the practice of supply chain risk management.

Applying Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS) methodology, this paper
analyzes the impact of alternative production-sales policies on the diffusion of a new
product and the generated NPV of profit. The key features of the ABMS model, that
captures the marketplace as a complex adaptive system, are: (i) supply chain capacity is
constrained; (ii) consumers' new product adoption decisions are influenced by marketing
activities as well as positive and negative word of mouth (WOM) between consumers; (iii)
interactions among consumers taking place in the context of their social network are
captured at the individual level; and (iv) the new product adoption process is adaptive.
Conducting over 1 million simulation experiments, we determined the "best" productionsales
policies under various parameter combinations based on the NPV of profit generated
over the diffusion process. The key findings are as follows: (1) on average, the build-up
policy with delayed marketing is the preferred policy in the case of only positive WOM as
well as the case of positive and negative WOM. This policy provides the highest expected
NPV of profit on average and it also performs very smoothly with respect to changes in
build-up periods. (2) It is critical to consider the significant impact of negative word-of-mouth
on the outcomes of alternative production-sales policies. Neglecting the effect of
negative word-of-mouth can lead to poor policy recommendations, incorrect conclusions
concerning the impact of operational parameters on the policy choice, and suboptimal

This dissertation investigates how firms embedded in an increasingly technology-based industry change their vertical integration and product development strategies in order to remain competitive and increase value capture. The first essay is a theoretical development integrating concepts of industry structure, organizational governance form and innovation in order to disentangle past research’s disagreements and guide future studies. Firms are seen as proactive actors that also have their decisions strongly shaped by structural (architectural) factors. The second essay focus on analyzing how module suppliers achieve a sustained competitive advantage by increasing their focus on modular products and innovations as well as managing their vertically related operations. Results from the global automotive industry reveal that suppliers are capable of capturing more value from modules when investing in modular innovations, integrating manufacturing operations via M&As and strengthening downstream relationships through strategic alliances. Lastly, the third essay investigates the great complexities involved in the manufacture of automobiles. By acknowledging the important strategic implications of managing product failures to the overall performance and reputation of organizations, this essay attempts to fill a gap in the literature by investigating how increased product, process and supplier changes affect product failure rates, and how firms manage product redesigns and learning from past product failures to increase quality reputation. Results indicates that in complex product industries such as automotive, firms find it very difficult to increase product changes without incurring also in more product failures. The results also highlight the importance of strong supplier involvement and integration as a means to reduce product failure rates. This study also demonstrates that quality reputation is better assessed by consumers when manufacturers invest more in model redesigns. Yet, it shows that experience with voluntary recalls helps firms to learn how to improve their new products and increase quality reputation.
