They are doing so to increase productivity, deploy newer applications fast, reduce upfront costs and optimize resource utilization. However, some companies are still trying to realize its full potential while dealing with technical challenges such as legacy systems, complexities of integration and other operational implications. The goal of this thesis is to identify the top benefits that companies are gaining through Cloud adoption and the main challenges they are facing in light of this transition. Much has already been written and discussed about these issues in literature. This thesis attempts to seek answers by directly reaching out to top executives of companies to gain real insights and understand the management strategies and best practices that are enabling this transition. By comparing reviewed literature and information gathered through interview analyses, this thesis brings clarity to areas of overlap and the major issues in Cloud computing that were not emphasized or as clearly evident in the literature. Based on the findings, key recommendations are made to help companies effectively transition into the Cloud.<br>by Harish Doddala.<br>S.M. in Engineering and Management

Abstract:
Panda Cloud Systems Management (PCSM) is a cloud-based system for monitoring, inventorying and managing computers, servers and networks. Stjarna Fyrkant started its IT-department in August 2014 where they manage for Stjarna Fyrkants computers and networks but also other companies as IT consultants. They have chosen to use PCSM to manage and to monitor these networks.   The project was started because Stjarna Fyrkant wants a better insight of the system as they have gone through with the basics of it. They have chosen four areas where they wants to know more about and these are monitoring of computers and servers, SNMP for monitoring other equipment, automated processes such as updating programs and Windows automatically and for Mobile Management (MDM) to manage and monitor iPhones.   To make this happen I was given login information to PCSM, two computers and an iPhone to test PCSM and its other functionalities for what Stjarna Fyrkant want to accomplish. For monitors the report will go through about which monitor that exists in the store and in PCSM and later assign these to two groups for monitoring the servers and clients. Then how to monitor other devices via SNMP and how this was applied to the devices that Stjarna Fyrkant has, such as printers. However, this didn’t work for all devices.   For maintenance of computers the report analyzes how to keep important updates for programs like Java and .NET but also for Windows. Additionally it was looked into how to remove unnecessary files found on the computers, such as the temporary files.   For MDM the report looks in to which functionalities that exists and these were later tested for an iPhone. These functions worked surprisingly fast when it took only a few seconds for them to apply. There were plans to create a product sheet for companies of these features, but this was handed to someone else with more knowledge for design such towards companies.

Abstract:
Recent years have shown a growing concern over increasing traffic volume worldwide. The insufficient road capacity and the resulting congestions have become major problems in many urban areas. Congestions negatively impact the economy, the environment and the health of the population as well as the drivers satisfaction. Current solutions to this topical and timely problem rely on the exploitation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies. ITS urban traffic management involves the collection and processing of a large amount of geographically distributed information to control distributed infrastructure and individual vehicles. The distributed nature of the problem prompted the development of a novel, scalable ITS-Cloud platform. The ITS-Cloud organises the processing and manages distributed data sources to provide traffic management methods with more accurate information about the state of the traffic. A new approach to service allocation, derived from the existing cloud and grid computing approaches, was created to address the unique needs of ITS traffic management. The ITS-Cloud hosts the collection of software services that form the Cloud based Traffic Management System (CTMS). CTMS combines intersection control algorithms with intersection approach advices to the vehicles and dynamic routing. The CTMS contains a novel Two-Step traffic management method that relies on the ITS-Cloud to deliver a detailed traffic simulation image and integrates an adaptive intersection control algorithm with a microscopic prediction mechanism. It is the first method able to perform simultaneous adaptive intersection control and intersection approach optimization. The Two-Step method builds on a novel pressure based adaptive intersection control algorithm as well as two new traffic prediction schemes. The developed traffic management system was evaluated using a new microscopic traffic simulation tool tightly integrated with the ITS-Cloud. The novel traffic management approaches were shown to outperform benchmark methods for a realistic range of traffic conditions and road network configurations. Unique to the work was the investigation of interactions between ITS components.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in System Design and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, System Design and Management Program, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>Cloud computing, a term whose origins have been in existence for more than a decade, has come into fruition due to technological capabilities and marketplace demands. Cloud computing can be defined as a scalable and flexible shared computing solution in which third-party suppliers use virtualization technologies to create and distribute computing resources to customers on-demand, via the Internet browser. Cloud computing is steadily replacing more rigid software and services licensing models in both small/medium business (SMB) and in the enterprise. This analysis poses a twofold examination of cloud computing as a disruptive technology. First, cloud computing has replaced existing software and services licensing business models, owing to its scalability, flexibility, and utility-based pricing. Second, as cloud computing takes hold as the prominent computing services business paradigm, other disruptive forces will surface to further integrate and differentiate the cloud computing landscape. These forces include the customer-driven need to create hybrid clouds between private and public cloud domains, vendor-agnostic solutions in the cloud, along with open standards to make cloud computing ubiquitous. Three criteria are assessed in characterizing cloud computing as a disruptive technology (Christensen, 2002).1 First, cloud computing as an innovation, must enable less-skilled and/or less-wealthy individuals to receive the same utility as only the more-skilled and/or more-wealthy intermediaries could formerly attain. Second, cloud computing must target customers at the low end of a market with modest demands on performance, but with a performance trajectory capable of exceeding those demands and thus taking over markets, tier by tier. As a corollary to this second criterion, the cloud computing business model allows the disruptive innovator to achieve attractive returns at prices that are unattractive to the incumbents. Third, an ecosystem in the form of a fully integrated single entity or a set of modular entities is required to successfully support the disruptive innovation. The analysis has shown that cloud computing is replacing traditional outsourcing and premise-based data centers for software applications and services delivery. Scalability, flexibility, virtualization, and cost are essential business drivers. However, current cloud computing solutions, especially in the enterprise, lack sufficient security and customer control. This gives rise to numerous subordinate disruptive business solutions which enable the enterprise and emerging demographics to develop and deploy their applications and services in a secure, controlled, profitable, and ubiquitous environment.<br>by Alexis Krikos.<br>S.M.in System Design and Management

Thesis: S.M. in Engineering and Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2019<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 101-114).<br>Cisco's security business segment with over $2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2018, makes Cisco one of the largest enterprise security players in the market. It is also one of the fastest growing business segments for Cisco, with last five years' CAGR at 12%. While this growth rate is in line with the estimated CAGR for cybersecurity market growth between 2018 - 2022, another leading incumbent's growth rate shows there is an opportunity to grow even faster. What can Cisco do to accelerate its security business group's growth and, more broadly, how can Cisco maintain its leadership position in a rapidly evolving and highly fragmented cybersecurity market? The goal of this thesis is two folds: first, is to discover the emerging cybersecurity needs for enterprises under the dynamic threat landscape in mobile, cloud-era, and the resultant growth opportunities and challenges these present to Cisco's security business group. Second, is to discover the main elements of Cisco security business group's current growth strategies and to evaluate platform thinking as a potential growth strategy for Cisco's Cloud Security business. We find Cisco Umbrella, a recently launched cloud security offering exhibits potential to become a foundation for Cisco Cloud Security as an open platform ecosystem. We conclude by discussing a potential future platform direction for Cisco Umbrella and raise follow-on questions for further consideration.<br>by Apoorva Parikh.<br>S.M. in Engineering and Management<br>S.M.inEngineeringandManagement Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2009.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>A slew of articles have been written about the fact that computing will eventually go in the direction of electricity. Just as most software users these days also own the hardware that runs the software, electricity users in the days of yore used to generate their own power. However, over time with standardization in voltage and frequency of generated power and better distribution mechanisms the generation of electricity was consolidated amongst fewer utility providers. The same is being forecast for computing infrastructure. Its is being touted that more and more users will rent computing infrastructure from a utility or "cloud" provider instead of maintaining their own hardware. This phenomenon or technology is being referred to Cloud Computing or Utility Computing. Cloud computing has been in existence in some form or the other since the beginning of computing. However, the advent of vastly improved software, hardware and communication technologies has given special meaning to the term cloud computing and opened up a world of possibilities. It is possible today to start an ecommerce or related company without investing in datacenters. This has turned out to be very beneficial to startups and smaller companies that want to test the efficacy of their idea before making any investment in expensive hardware. Corporations like Amazon, SalesForce.com, Google, IBM, Sun Microsystems, and many more are offering or planning to offer these infrastructure services in one form or another.<br>(cont.) An ecosystem has already been created and going by the investment and enthusiasm in this space the ecosystem is bound to grow. This thesis tries to define and explain the fundamentals of cloud computing. It looks at the technical aspects of this industry and the kind of applications where cloud can be used. It also looks at the economic value created by the platform, the network externalities, its effect on traditional software companies and their reaction to this technology. The thesis also tries to apply the principle of multi-homing, coring and tipping to the cloud-computing platform and explain the results. The hurdles for both users and providers of this service are also examined in this thesis.<br>by Ratnadeep Bhattacharjee.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2009.<br>Includes bibliographical references (leaves 67-69).<br>'Cloud computing', is a broad concept and in general is a term used for internet-based computing resources that are in an unspecified remote location or locations and that are flexible and fungible. Clouds provide a wide range of computing capability available as a service where users are separated from the underlying technology by a set of APIs. These computing capabilities are made available by abstracting at different levels; at the hardware level, development platform or the applications level. Cloud computing is particularly helpful to application developers and IT operations because it allows them to focus on the service/application provided rather than worrying about scaling, failure, maintenance or reliability of these computing resources. By consolidating and sharing computing resources among multiple tenants thus improving utilization, cloud computing brings cost savings to end users. The higher the abstraction level, greater are the benefits resulting from better resource utilization and thus more cost savings, both for providers and end users. As computing resources become cheaper, network connectivity and bandwidth improve both in terms of availability and pricing and human resources becomes expensive, cloud computing is increasingly seen as viable replacement of enterprise owned local IT infrastructure.<br>(cont.) With the adoption of cloud computing comes a major shift in the underlying architecture of how we develop, deploy, deliver and run applications compared to existing behavior where we run applications on local computing resources and thus increasing pressure on enterprise software vendors to adopt these new business model for software development and new alternate software delivery models that are supported by and derive the benefits of cloud computing. While legacy enterprise software can simply be installed and run on instances on the cloud using cloud based infrastructure services, maximum benefits are realized by end users when these applications itself are provided as a service in the form of a platform or software. To do so, in most cases, legacy enterprise software would have to go through an architecture overhaul to be able to deliver existing functionalities as a platform or software as a service. Enterprise software vendors would also have to change their current business models where large license revenues, high maintenance cost of antiquated versions and heavily invested customers are the standard and move to pay-per-use cloud computing model. This thesis aims to study the implications of 'Cloud Computing' trends on the development, distribution, business models and the business of enterprise software vendors. This thesis tries to chart and predict the progress of trends in computing towards 'cloud computing', connect those trends to enterprise software usage changes and determine the impact on enterprise software vendors.<br>(cont.) This will help enterprise software vendors to determine what if any strategic options available will help adopt this technological innovation and conform to future enterprise software requirements based on this trend.<br>by Leonard Francis.<br>S.M.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Engineering and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, System Design and Management Program, 2011.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 72-73).<br>In recent years offering and maturity in Cloud Computing space has gained significant momentum. CIOs are looking at Cloud seriously because of bottom line savings and scalability advantages. According to Gartner's survey in early 2010 of 1600 CIOs around the world, Cloud computing and virtualization were on top of their list. This interest has also resulted in slew of products and services from existing IT players as well as new comers which promise to offer many solutions to pave the path towards Cloud computing adoption by enterprises. As organizations get on to the Cloud computing bandwagon they are looking at their current IT setup and looking at the best way they can take advantage of what Cloud has to offer. For a given enterprises, getting on to Cloud might be a complete new start from scratch, a limited deployment of new applications or migration of part of existing applications integrating backwards with on-premise applications. To take advantage of the Cloud, enterprise will need to define their short and long term Cloud strategy. They will need to consider factors specific to their businesses and determine their requirements, risks and benefits. Proper investigation by the enterprise will give them insight in to the benefits and specific strategy they need to follow to gain the said benefits from Cloud. This Thesis analyzes specific strategies which enterprises can adopt, both from business and technology perspective to make sure the migration and integration between on-premise and Cloud happens with minimal disruption to business and results in maximum sustainable cost benefit. It presents the current state of On-Premise IT and Cloud Computing space and then compares them to come up with enterprise specific variables based on which one can make Cloud migration decisions. Finally, Thesis presents the broad frameworks for "migration to Cloud" and confirms the same by interviewing enterprise managers involved in Cloud migration. There are various ways to slice and approach the Cloud migration - but all should take in to consideration the business processes, architecture of existing systems, architecture of available Cloud services, interoperability between on-premise and Cloud applications, maturity of Cloud and standards, short and long term cost savings, sustainability, data/security/regulation, user adoption, available Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and business criticality.<br>by Ashok Dhiman.<br>S.M.in Engineering and Management

Thesis: S.M. in Engineering and Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2017.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>The Software Industry has been constantly growing and setting path-breaking trends over the years. Cloud Computing is one such innovation that has brought a sea of change in the way people build and use software. Businesses are shifting their perspective from a model based on 'software ownership' to a model based on 'software as a service'. This paradigm shift in the industry has forced established software vendors to reinvent their businesses by offering products in form of services. The change in 'software ownership' dynamics also warrants a change in the pricing strategy. A popular alternative to the traditional perpetual licensing model is a subscription pricing model. This involves the consumers paying a fixed amount periodically to get the software service, instead of paying a large amount upfront to own the software. The study is designed primarily to compare the effectiveness of the subscription model over the traditional perpetual licensing model, with the help of a case study of Adobe Systems Incorporated. The company is a good choice as it switched from the perpetual licensing model to subscription model in 2012. The study concludes that, while no single model is entirely perfect on all grounds, a pricing strategy based on the subscription model could be an effective strategy for any organization to increase its revenue and maintain customer satisfaction at the same time. The strategy enables the organizations to get more revenue from their subscribers over a longer period of time. It also reduces the upfront cost paid by users, making it more affordable which would help increase the number of subscribers.<br>by Angad Singh.<br>S.M. in Engineering and Management

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in System Design and Management)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2010.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (p. 73-74).<br>Business intelligence is the set of tools, processes, practices and people that are used to take advantage of information to support decision making in the organizations. Cloud computing is a new paradigm for offering computing resources that work on demand, are scalable and are charged by the time they are used. Organizations can save large amounts of money and effort using this approach. This document identifies the main challenges companies encounter while working on business intelligence applications in the cloud, such as security, availability, performance, integration, regulatory issues, and constraints on network bandwidth. All these challenges are addressed with a systems thinking approach, and several solutions are offered that can be applied according to the organization's needs. An evaluations of the main vendors of cloud computing technology is presented, so that business intelligence developers identify the available tools and companies they can depend on to migrate or build applications in the cloud. It is demonstrated how business intelligence applications can increase their availability with a cloud computing approach, by decreasing the mean time to recovery (handled by the cloud service provider) and increasing the mean time to failure (achieved by the introduction of more redundancy on the hardware). Innovative mechanisms are discussed in order to improve cloud applications, such as private, public and hybrid clouds, column-oriented databases, in-memory databases and the Data Warehouse 2.0 architecture. Finally, it is shown how the project management for a business intelligence application can be facilitated with a cloud computing approach. Design structure matrices are dramatically simplified by avoiding unnecessary iterations while sizing, validating, and testing hardware and software resources.<br>by Eumir P. Abstract:
The thesis deals with the latest trend in providing ICT service -- Cloud Computing -- and its possible application in enterprise information systems generally. The aim of the thesis is to evaluate market readiness for Cloud Computing services in order to find out to which extent it is possible to cover enterprise information system, or rather its software applications, on strategic and tactical management levels using the above-mentioned services. To achieve the aim, it is necessary to determine both the Cloud Computing services market and the enterprise information system sphere and then to decide whether Cloud Computing services are able to cover the basic needs of enterprise information systems. The evaluation of the market readiness will be executed in accordance with both the specially created methodology and the defined requirements. Thus the present market readiness rating will be possible to determine. The thesis should show to which extent it is possible to apply Cloud Computing model to the enterprise information systems issue. It will also be possible to find out the factors which support this application the most and, on the other hand, which factors limit this application the most. The thesis will also show which fields are advanced enough, which services we can consider and what we can expect of these services.

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M. in Engineering and Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2017.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 97-101).<br>Cloud computing is widely adopted in industry sectors of finance, energy and transportation. Public cloud service providers are able to consistently deliver solutions that meet demanding needs of security, availability, scalability of mission-critical applications. The low cost of compute and storage, combined with expanding coverage of high speed cellular networks, have enabled a wide expansion of telemetry services and consumer applications in automobiles, but safety applications are not leveraging these benefits. The majority of traffic fatalities happens in high-speed multi-vehicle crashes. Causal analysis of multi-vehicle crashes reveal process model inconsistencies that lead the drivers to make wrong assumptions about vehicle capabilities and lead-vehicle separation distances during adverse road conditions. The Spot Weather Impact Warning (SWIW) is a connected vehicle application concept proposed by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) that alerts drivers to unsafe conditions at specific points on the downstream roadway as a result of weather-related impacts. The application is designed to warn drivers about inclement weather conditions that may impact travel conditions using real-time weather information that is collected from roadway infrastructure and vehicle based probe data. The information is processed to determine the nature of the alert or warning to be delivered and then communicated to connected vehicles. The effectiveness of SWIW connected vehicle application depends on the probe coverage and the speed that probe data can be collected, analyzed, and broadcasted to relevant vehicles and roadway signage. To reach a sufficient coverage without high investment in new infrastructure, SWIW applications can be architected to use existing mobile operators and cloud service providers. A deeper Systems Theoretic Process Analysis of the application reveals that varying levels of vehicle-to-cloud communication performance may lead to process model inconsistencies for drivers, resulting in unsafe control actions from driver that ignore warnings and lead to accidents. To validate the vehicle to cloud communication performance, the SWIW application prototype is built using existing cloud service and vehicle platform. The performance of the application is validated across all tier-one cloud and mobile service providers in 10,000 miles of US roadways. The test results reveal the presence of low latency corridors in the US that may support the initial deployment of low latency solution. String stability model showed that significant reduction in probability of accidents is possible even at low penetration rates of the solution. The solution's operational cost analysis also concludes that a limited deployment on commercial vehicles has the potential of saving high value corridors such as the 402-mile Wyoming I-80 corridor as much as $1.5 million per day of socio-economic losses in accidents with an operational cost of $763 per day. This thesis concludes that connected vehicle programs that are addressing multi-vehicle accidents in low latency corridors should consider commercial fleet deployments that use mobile and public cloud service providers to quickly reach minimal penetration rate and socio-economic benefits.<br>by Ricardo DeMatos.<br>S.M. in Engineering and Management

Thesis: S.M. in Engineering and Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Engineering, System Design and Management Program, Engineering and Management Program, 2016.<br>Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.<br>Includes bibliographical references (pages 119-124).<br>Cloud computing represents the next generation of disruptive technologies in computing. However, there are several barriers to massive adoption of cloud and among them security remains one of the principal concerns. Traditional failure analysis and prevention frameworks fall exceedingly short to address cybersecurity as is evident by every increasing cybersecurity breaches. New frameworks for cybersecurity are required which take a holistic view of the problem and a systems perspective. Migrating to cloud also represents a key decision point for CEO/CTO's today, especially from security perspective. The objective of this thesis is to illustrate the effectiveness of taking a Systems Approach to cybersecurity and provide a framework for migration to cloud with specific emphasis on critical cybersecurity issues pertaining to various cloud deployment models and delivery services. The thesis is divided into three phases. Firstly, it will aim to explore the major security threats and critical areas of focus for security in cloud. It will explore the major security frameworks, metrics and controls, especially the major ones from NIST, CIS and CSA. SLA's for different cloud service models will then be presented. A high level cloud migration framework strategy and framework, with special emphasis on cybersecurity will also be discussed. In the second phase, System- Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP) which is based on Systems Theory will be applied to Target security breach and key recommendations as well as new insights will be presented. The analysis will highlight the need for holistic approach and Systems Thinking to cybersecurity and new insights that are not produced by traditional methods will be presented. Finally, in the third phase, the cloud migration framework discussed in phase one will be applied to Target. A case will be made that in certain scenarios, moving the less critical applications to cloud and utilizing the security benefits of cloud can actually reduce the threat vectors and security exposures and bring IT systems from a higher risk state to lower risk state. The thesis integrates cybersecurity methods and frameworks as well as security metrics with the cloud migration strategy. Additionally, it also presents STAMP/CAST failure model for cybersecurity breaches and highlights the need for integrated view of safety and security and Systems Thinking in cybersecurity both in traditional systems and cloud.<br>by Ravi Raina.<br>S.M. in Engineering and Management

Abstract:
Management solutions for current and future Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Data Centers (DCs) face complex challenges. First, DCs are now very large infrastructures holding hundreds of thousands if not millions of servers and applications. Second, DCs are highly heterogeneous. DC infrastructures consist of servers and network devices with different capabilities from various vendors and different generations. Cloud applications are owned by different tenants and have different characteristics and requirements. Third, most DC elements are highly dynamic. Applications can change over time. During their lifetime, their logical architectures evolve and change according to workload and resource requirements. Failures and bursty resource demand can lead to unstable states affecting a large number of services. Global and centralized approaches limit scalability and are not suitable for large dynamic DC environments with multiple tenants with different application requirements. We propose a novel fully distributed and dynamic management paradigm for highly diverse and volatile DC environments. We develop LAMA, a novel framework for managing large scale cloud infrastructures based on a multi-agent system (MAS). Provider agents collaborate to advertise and manage available resources, while app agents provide integrated and customized application management. Distributing management tasks allows LAMA to scale naturally. Integrated approach improves its efficiency. The proximity to the application and knowledge of the DC environment allow agents to quickly react to changes in performance and to pre-plan for potential failures. We implement and deploy LAMA in a testbed server cluster. We demonstrate how LAMA improves scalability of management tasks such as provisioning and monitoring. We evaluate LAMA in light of state-of-the-art open source frameworks. LAMA enables customized dynamic management strategies to multi-tier applications. These strategies can be configured to respond to failures and workload changes within the limits of the desired SLA for each application.

Rostrom, Timothy James. "Framework to Secure Cloud-based Medical Image Storage and Management System Communications." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3124.

Full text
Abstract:
Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) have been traditionally constrained to the premises of the healthcare provider. This has limited the availability of these systems in many parts of the world and mandated major costs in infrastructure for those who employ them. Public cloud services could be a solution that eases the cost of ownership and provides greater flexibility for PACS implementations. This could make it possible to bring medical imaging services to places where it was previously unavailable and reduce the costs associated with these services for those who utilize them. Moving these systems to public cloud infrastructure requires that an authentication and encryption policy for communications is established within the PACS environment to mitigate the risks incurred by using the Internet for the communication of medical data. This thesis proposes a framework which can be used to create an authenticated and encrypted channel to secure the communications with a cloud-based PACS. This framework uses the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol and X.509 certificates to create a secured channel. An enterprise style PKI is used to provide a trust model to authorize endpoints to access the system. The validity of this framework was tested by creating a prototype cloud-based PACS with secured communications. Using this framework will provide a system based on trusted industry standards which will protect the confidentiality and integrity of medical data in transit when using a cloud-based PACS service.

Abstract:
The Cloud infrastructure has become an ideal platform for large-scale applications, such as Video-on-Demand (VoD). As VoD systems migrate to the Cloud, new challenges emerge. The complexity of the Cloud system due to virtualization and resource sharing complicates the Quality of Experience (QoE) management. Operational failures in the Cloud can lead to session crashes. In addition to the Cloud, there are many other systems involved in the large-scale video streaming. These systems include the Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), multiple transit networks, access networks, and user devices. Anomalies in any of these systems can affect users’ Quality of Experience (QoE). Identifying the anomalous system that causes QoE degradation is challenging for VoD providers due to their limited visibility over these systems. We propose to apply end user QoE in the management and control of large-scale VoD systems in the Cloud. We present a QoE-based management and control systems and validate them in production Clouds. QMan, a QoE based Management system for VoD in the Cloud, controls the server selection adaptively based on user QoE. QWatch, a scalable monitoring system, detects and locates anomalies based on the end-user QoE. QRank, a scalable anomaly identification system, identifies the anomalous systems causing QoE anomalies. The proposed systems are developed and evaluated in production Clouds (Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and Amazon Web Service). QMan provides 30% more users with QoE above the “good” Mean Opinion Score (MOS) than existing server selection systems. QMan discovers operational failures by QoE based server monitoring and prevents streaming session crashes. QWatch effectively detects and locates QoE anomalies in our extensive experiments in production Clouds. We find numerous false positives and false negatives when system metric based anomaly detection methods are used. QRank identifies anomalous systems causing 99.98% of all QoE anomalies among transit networks, access networks and user devices. Our extensive experiments in production Clouds show that transit networks are the most common bottleneck causing QoE anomalies. Cloud provider should identify bottleneck transit networks and determine appropriate peering with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to bypass these bottlenecks.

Abstract:
The growth of cloud computing has enabled the provision of computer resources online and offers two essential characteristics, illusion of infinite supply and pay-per-use. Learning management systems are currently used extensively by the Swedish universities as learning tools. This brings better opportunities for distance courses and e-learning. To combine cloud computing with a learning management system is now possible and should therefore give the schools benefits. If the Learning management system is hosted as a cloud service by an external provider, so should the requirements be different. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether there are any incentives for rent a learning management system as a cloud service and also investigate if the requirements are different in a rented cloud service. A case study was conducted at Uppsala University and Dalarnas University, in order to compare a learning management system installed on their own server with a learning management system rented as a cloud service.  The result of the study proves that there are advantages to rent a learning management system as a cloud services. In terms to the requirements, there are no great differences. An important requirement when the learning management system is hosted by a supplier is that there is a good dialogue and that the organization relies on the supplier.

Khajeh-Hosseini, Ali. "Supporting system deployment decisions in public clouds." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3412.

Full text
Abstract:
Decisions to deploy IT systems on public Infrastructure-as-a-Service clouds can be complicated as evaluating the benefits, risks and costs of using such clouds is not straightforward. The aim of this project was to investigate the challenges that enterprises face when making system deployment decisions in public clouds, and to develop vendor-neutral tools to inform decision makers during this process. Three tools were developed to support decision makers: 1. Cloud Suitability Checklist: a simple list of questions to provide a rapid assessment of the suitability of public IaaS clouds for a specific IT system. 2. Benefits and Risks Assessment tool: a spreadsheet that includes the general benefits and risks of using public clouds; this provides a starting point for risk assessment and helps organisations start discussions about cloud adoption. 3. Elastic Cost Modelling: a tool that enables decision makers to model their system deployment options in public clouds and forecast their costs. These three tools collectively enable decision makers to investigate the benefits, risks and costs of using public clouds, and effectively support them in making system deployment decisions. Data was collected from five case studies and hundreds of users to evaluate the effectiveness of the tools. This data showed that the cost effectiveness of using public clouds is situation dependent rather than universally less expensive than traditional forms of IT provisioning. Running systems on the cloud using a traditional 'always on' approach can be less cost effective than on-premise servers, and the elastic nature of the cloud has to be considered if costs are to be reduced. Decision makers have to model the variations in resource usage and their systems' deployment options to obtain accurate cost estimates. Performing upfront cost modelling is beneficial as there can be significant cost differences between different cloud providers, and different deployment options within a single cloud. During such modelling exercises, the variations in a system's load (over time) must be taken into account to produce more accurate cost estimates, and the notion of elasticity patterns that is presented in this thesis provides one simple way to do this.

Abstract:
The high adoption rate of cloud computing technology is changing the strategic, operational and functional aspects of businesses. Though, as cloud computing is seeing massive global investment, the vast concentration of resources and information argues for new sources of vulnerabilities and challenges for the cloud computing adopters. Hence, the cloud computing technology is argued to see its full potential once solid information security is established. There has been a palpable development of theories, guidelines and standards of how to implement, maintain and continually improve a security information management system. The outcome has resulted in recognized standards. However, the comprehensiveness and the complexity to implement, maintain and continually improve a security information management system remain. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how cloud computing oriented firms succeed with the realization of an information security management system. This was done by identifying frameworks and processes used by cloud computing oriented organizations.

In general, such a registration and management system is customized and designed by professionals. For general people, it is hard to design and use such a system due to its professional skill and high cost. However, nowadays everyone is easily to access many network services, for example, Google’s cloud services. Google's cloud services are simple and free, and they are easy to use in anytime and everywhere. They cover a wide range of applications, and even more, you can use Google Apps Script to write programs to expand the functions to suit your specific application. In this research, we use Google cloud services and Google Apps Script to create a cloud activity management system, which is not only easy to use, without additional costs, and furthermore, it is easy to expand its function in the future. The whole system uses Google spreadsheet as its center, users just need to fill in a list of the activity information, and the people list to invite. Then a Google form can be automatically generated and sent via Gmail or SMS message to the candidates, and the reply status will be tracked automatically. In addition, it can also automatically generate Google Calendar events for the activity, Google sites announcement of the activity, as well as a Google Doc document to summarize the activity. Through this way the average person can easily build their own event management system, not only save manpower and money, and can greatly enhance the efficiency of the process.

Therefore, cloud storage has become a popular technology which can meet people's requirements. Users start to transfer data they want to save through websites to storage space provided by large enterprises such as Google, Amazon, etc. In addition to the convenience store, these enterprises also provide other services such as website hosting. Users do not need to set up their own server and worry about traffic problems or hardware maintenance. They only have to upload the written pages to the back-end servers to create their own web space. This study uses Python to write a database management system on the platform provided by Google Google App Engine (GAE). It allows users to fill out basic information, upload files, and delete data through management on websites.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣海洋大學<br>電機工程學系<br>99<br>In today’s heavily networked society, dynamic location tracking technology plays an important role in many business activities, such as taxi dispatching, bus fleet monitoring, and logistics management. Also in recent years, cloud computing has quickly become one of the most exciting technological advancements. Many PC and server based applications now have cloud based alternative. For those information services demanded by vast amount of users, “shift to the Cloud” has become a trend that is practical and hard to be ignored. Moving dynamic location tracking and management to a cloud platform is no exception and is a logical and natural technological evolution. Based on this concept, this thesis develops a cloud computing based dynamic location tracking and management system. The cloud computing platform of our choice is the well-known Google App Engine (GAE). This system has the following basic functions: (1) Displaying on an electronic map the locations of all users who have logged in the system, (2) Sending text messages between users through the system; (3) Showing the path history of each user. System planners can quickly and easily construct a position monitoring system by using these basic functions. To access the service, users can use any smartphone or GPS-equipped mobile device to connect to the Google platform. Currently, this system supports the Android Mobile Platform only. To demonstrate the system’s practicality, we have also developed in this thesis two example applications: a sex offender parolee monitoring system and a system which helps locating family members who occasionally wander around and get lost because of Alzheimer's disease. Both examples serve to show application developers how to quickly construct their own location tracking and monitoring services.

碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>工業工程與管理學系<br>100<br>For more efficient computing and data storage, the IT industry which provide cloud computing service shoud centralize management of computing equipments. However, a high degree of centralization will enhance the thermal density inside the data center. The heat must be excluded in order to ensure the normal operation of data center. Flexible adjustment of heat dissipation according to heat change can achieve effective use of resource and energy-saving. However, it is difficult to adjust heat dissipation. Therefore, developing a intelligent cooling management system to subjectively and flexibly adjust heat dissipation according to the heat change is an effective method. Previous studies are only focused on partial or specific cooling device control. With the development of cooling technology, more cooling device should be considered. This study aims to construct a management system to effectively adjust the heat dissipation for a cloud computing data center which has a variety of cooling device. A real case from a cloud computing data center and a set of simulated case are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>土木工程系所<br>103<br>Construction Project Life Cycle can be divided into six (06) phases: Conceptual Planning and Feasibility Study, Schematic Design, Procurement, Construction Phase, Start-up and Implementation, Operation and Maintenance. Each phase of the Project Life Cycle includes a wide scope of works. More, the participation of different parties such as the owner, the supervisor, the main contractor, subcontractors, etc. It make the management of construction project even harder. Among the phase listed above, the management of construction phase is crucial to the success of the project. In fact, it determines whether the construction project can be completed within the budget, on schedule and according to the quality standards. During the construction phase, Earn Value Management (EVM) is often used for cost control. Earn Value Management (EVM) is a methodology that combine scope, schedule and resource measurements to access project performance and progress. It is a commonly used method of performance measurement for projects. It used the three main parameter of EVM namely, Planned Value (PV), Earned Value (EV) and Actual Value (AV) to calculate the performance index of the construction project, helping us to understand the current construction profiles about schedule and cost. Those parameters are derived from the s-curve, construction daily report and progress payment activities. Thus, the s-curve, the construction daily report and the progress payment activities not only are the basic but important construction management items, but also a reference for construction project cost and schedule control. This study propose the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Cloud Management System, which is applied to construction management, in order to assist in the establishment of the s-curve, the construction daily report and the progress payment activities. The integration pattern created in this study is applied to a project schedule and cost control in order to investigate its potential use and benefits. The proposed method is also applied to the EVM by considering different participants, approaches “Owner” and “Main contractor” in order to expand its range of applications. Finally, via a case study, the proposed method presents a different view of EVM for a construction project.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國防大學理工學院<br>資訊科學碩士班<br>99<br>This thesis aims to design a cloud storage environment for the military Learning Management System. All server nodes in our cloud environment are cooperating with one another in a decentralized approach to transmit file blocks. We propose the Dynamic Assignment Fast Replica algorithm (DAFR) to transmit content files by cutting each content file into several blocks in accordance with network transmission capacity between nodes. Thus, the DAFR algorithm can make faster these file blocks copied into all nodes in the environment. Moreover, we design a program to simulate the file transmission. Consequently, a comparison is made between Fast Replica algorithm, proposed by J. Amugharaj, and our Dynamic Assignment Fast Replica algorithm. The demonstration shows that the file transmission with our DAFR algorithm in a cloud storage environment is faster than Fast Replica algorithm. To verify the applicability of our algorithm when applied in an extreme low and different transmission capacity among nodes in the cloud environment, Clustered Fast Replica (CFR) is proposed, and a test has been carried out to examine the file transmission performance. The result shows that Fast Replica algorithm is not suitable for this network environment and the performance is not what we expected. Additionally, this thesis also proposes a load balanced approach in the Learning Management System. When user obtains materials from the cloud storage environment, it can decentralize the load and then reduce the time of downloading.

This application aims to collect tempera- ture data stream continuously from a speci ed set of sensors. Instead of collecting the temperature information of all the sensors by one machine, the sensors are divided into several subsets each of which is handled as a Map task. In each Map task, the temperature data stream of the assigned sensors is collected continuously and stored in a prede ned database. All the Map tasks can run simultaneously on several machines. This method can reduce the delay time and improve the e ciency of the data collection service, especially in the case of having a huge number of sensors monitored remotely by a data center through Internet. We can use the value of remote sensors to predict the next value of remote sensors by some methods such as linear regres- sion and K-means. And, we can use it to predict the system alarm. Experimental results show that the proposed method is e ective in temperature data collection, and e ective in carbon reduction.

碩士<br>東海大學<br>工業工程與經營資訊學系<br>103<br>Facing increasingly complex, the rapid changes of customer needs and the shorten R&D schedule, organization applying project management by requirements identifying, task dispatching, scheduling, executing and continue monitoring and controlling, helps organization reaching specific objectives under resource and time limit by clearly defining, dispatching, scheduling and keeping track on tasks. However, how organization can monitor a project and react on environment changes is the key to achieving goals. Lean thinking from the automobile industries using Kanban as an information delivery tools in shop floor. Through information on the Kanban clearly indicate the required production quantity and transportation quantity, not only gain the control on shop floor’s manpower and material resources, but also knowing the production status such like production target, actual quantity, defect rate and production issue, help organizations monitor and control on production activities. Therefore, organizations controls project continuously by using Kanban’s delivery function to assign project resources and task instruction, and keep monitor on project by different task status showing on Kanban, this capability makes Kanban become a successful and an emerging approach in project management. However, traditional Kanban can only be install in a fixed location, for project that have uncertain task location and have to travel around multiple location, such like expatriate maintenance technician, cleaner or sales man it’s hard to receive task instruction or report task status, the organization may not have control on project in real time. In order to gain full view and control of a project, we developing a cloud-based Kanban (dashboard) system, which is different from traditional Kanban that can only be install at fixed place or vehicle. With smart device, a cloud-based Kanban can monitor or assign task, report task progress at anytime, anywhere, making organization’s project management more flexible and agile.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立虎尾科技大學<br>資訊工程研究所<br>101<br>With the expansion of the internet, cloud computing has become a crucial subject in both the academia and the industry. Hadoop, an open source cloud computing platform, is one of the major topics. The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and MapReduce in Hadoop provide distributed storage and parallel computation functions, respectively. The HDFS also increases the reliability of cloud data whereas MapReduce enhances computing performance. Although the Hadoop platform lowers the threshold and difficulty of setting up a cloud computing environment, writing MapReduce programs can be difficult. The framework of MapReduce comprises two stages, Mapper and Reducer. Bulk data are divided into several smaller independent data segments, each of which is computed by a Mapper. Subsequently, the Reducer operation takes over the processing and then outputs the final results of Hadoop. The Mapper stage is essential while the Reducer stage is not; the output of the Mapper can also serve as the final output of Hadoop. In this study, we divided the framework of MapReduce into three models: one with no Reduce, another with one Reduce, and the other with multiple Reduces. The different models can be applied to meet the logic operation demands of various scenarios, and therefore, selecting a MapReduce model that is appropriate for the application scenario is crucial to set off the effectiveness and value of cloud computing. The primary contributions of this study lie in the use of actual cases to test and evaluate the three different MapReduce frameworks. Furthermore, we discovered that although the Hadoop cloud computing platform provides a web interface to display platform information, it does not support platform management with a mobile device. We employed an Android mobile device to establish a mobile Hadoop management system that enables system administrators to deal with issues in immediately.
