An aeromechanics investigation was conducted for the Boeing 222 proprotor test in transition orientation with the comprehensive analysis code RCAS comparing vortex wake, Viscous Vortex Particle Method (VVPM) and Helios™ (CFD) calculations. The results include the calculations of rotor trim and rotor oscillatory structural loads for a proprotor in near axial orientation at high speed, high incidence transition and helicopter-like edgewise orientation. VVPM and Helios calculations gave the same wake physics for the isolated rotor and resulted in similar hub moments and blade loads sensitivities

Abstract In spite of advances in CFD prediction tools, the current design of outlet guide vane (OGV) stages for flow recovery downstream from low pressure turbines (LPT) still has to face significant flow entrance uncertainties. To ensure proper response of modern, high efficiency OGV’s, the sensitivity in the aerodynamic response of the vanes to both different levels of inlet turbulence and off-design incidence must be analyzed. To that end, a systematic experimental investigation of a current design LPT OGV airfoil has been undertaken in a low-speed linear cascade. Wall pressure distribution

Abstract:
Due to the great concern that blast overpressure can cause mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), there is strong interest in putting sensors on warfighters to collect theater data for correlation with medical outcomes. One approach is to mount multiple pressure sensors on the warfighter to measure the blast overpressure environment. An event recognition algorithm that is based on the sensor data recordings is needed to reconstruct the incident blast wave that impacts the warfighter. Blast impingement pressure on an object is highly dependent on the angle of incidence at the point of impact; shad

The challenge for current and future nacelles of commercial engines is to obtain: -low transonic drag in cruise condition, -low weight and reduced dimensions without reducing the low speed operating domain (maximum incidence, crosswind, etc) and low noise level. This paper explains how various designs can be improved by using modern numerical methods. Concerning air inlets, 3D Euler code and boundary layer code are used for prediction of divergence Mach number and drag in cruise conditions. Low speed behaviour is also obtained for various flight conditions which cause high local incidences on

Two CFD techniques are assessed aiming at wind turbine aeroelasticity: a classic finite volume formulation to solve the Navier-Stokes equations, and a viscous-inviscid interaction formulation. Those 2 methods are tested with a NACA 634 – 421 airfoil, and both steady and unsteady numerical results are compared with experiments performed in the IAT wind tunnel. The Naviers-Stokes solver associated with the Wilcox k–ω turbulence model with SST corrections gives pretty good predictions for incidence in the range 0–15°, even for the static stall at 9°. The model uses a blended approach to expand ray-tracing techniques applied to sub-1 cm3 snow samples to snowpacks of arbitrary depths.
