Abstract:
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references.
A large-format CNC router has been stored in the Pappalardo Laboratory wood shop for several years in an unusable state. A need assessment determined that it would be cost effective to bring the router online for use in the mechanical engineering curriculum. The router was cleaned and inspected; it was determined that the router was in sound mechanical condition. The stepper motors, control system, and power supply were also functional, but the CNC interface software was outdated. To ensure the long term viability of the router as an effective teaching tool the most cost effective solution was to upgrade the motors, control system, and CNC interface software using a package provided by the original supplier, Techno-Isel Inc. The motors, control system, and software were installed, bringing the router to a fully functional state. Dust and ejected cuttings cause a safety hazard and cleanliness problem when operating the router. An enclosure was designed and installed in order to trap the majority of debris and reduce noise levels in the workspace, and a brief user guide has been compiled to ensure safe and effective usage.

Abstract:
AASS (Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems, Center for Applied Autonomous Sensor) works with research in autonomous systems. Their major application is the development of such systems for the automotive industry as well for the elderly.  AASS, have a desire for a simple model of a CNC milling machine for milling smaller parts for prototyping. The focus should be on cost when precision is not of great interest.  The mission is to develop a design of a CNC router with three axes with a workspace of 600x450x150mm. The machine should be able to cut soft materials such as wood, plastics as well as soft aluminum.  The result is a three-axis CNC router which is driven by three stepper motors which are coupled to respective ball screw. The Cnc router has a workspace of about 600x450x150mm. It is capable of cutting with cutting forces up to 150N without deformations that will produce large errors in values of processed detail. The design consists of main body of aluminum profiles available at Örebro University. The movable parts consist of Quadro Tables manufactured by Rollco. The design provides a good solution to a relatively low cost.

In the beginning of this thesis I make a literature overview of the basics of LTE technology and the possibilities of 5G technology and IoT applications. In the theory part I review what makes LTE technology and what are the key principles that allow greater data rates compared to 3G. The very basics of 5G technology is introduced. I also review why 5G technology allows greater data rates and lower latency compared to 4G technology. In the end of this thesis I present IoT application I have made that allows to examine vibration from CNC milling machine. For measuring the vibration ADIS16227 vibration sensor is connected with Raspberry Pi computer. Finally, I consider what can be done with this IoT application and what constraints it may have

Abstract:
The art of tattooing has been around for centuries in human history and tattoos are still very popular in today’s society. Tattoos serve as a way to, for example, express people’s personalities, religious beliefs, or culture, and its growing popularity may lead to the need for more technological and automated alternatives. In this project, a computer numerical control plotter was built to investigate the possibilities of automation of tattooing, and the project focused on the possible limitations of performance and safety in an automated tattooing machine. The machine was built using two stepper motors connected with an H-Bot configuration that moved a gantry in the X and Y directions. A third stepper motor connected to a lead-screw was mounted on the gantry enabling movement in Z direction. Several tests were conducted in order to examine the performance of the machine. These tests were done using ink and whiteboard markers to draw different geometries on paper and the subject’s arm. The results showed limitations in the size of the tattoo as the machine could only draw on a flat surface and therefore had trouble adjusting to the uneven surface of an arm. The results also showed that the machine had some trouble drawing rounded geometries, such as circles, which meant that the circles, to a certain extent, got an elliptical appearance. It did however draw straight lines accurately. The main factors of this were believed to be a combination of sub-optimal assembly and the stepper motors being too weak to optimally operate with the H-Bot configuration. The safety risks were considered restricted when using a limit switch sensor and carefully calibrating the speed and movement in the Z-axis.

Abstract:
The intent of the thesis is to automate the generation of computer numerical control (CNC) codes from geometrical computer-aided design (CAD) models. The work is carried out using two machines, the MDX 40A milling machine, and the HAAS VM3 machine. The case study is to determine the potential in automating the code generation process. The empirical findings from the research studies reveal that the manual process for programming the codes for the models pose a challenge of consuming more time using the procedures in computer-aided manufacturing and manual operations performed by a programmer. One crucial factor to meet these requirements is the productivity of the machining process. Design automation for machining is the potent tool to increase productivity in this process. The main methods used in the study to fulfill the main objective of the thesis are addressed. The programming of the code is automated for these two machines and the outcome is compared with the manual approach. The need of automating the codes is to provide better accuracy and efficiency. Further, automation is beneficial as it increases the capability to accommodate the new changes in the design of the model. The conclusion drawn from the results of the study is that the automation for code programming results in increasing the speed of the machining process by reducing time consumption. Though the approach of automating codes is carried out for two machines, the potential of this approach is that the code generation process is not dependant on the post-processor of any specific machine

Abstract:
The thesis was written during an internship at ProCom GmbH in Aachen, Germany. It is a project with the goal to upgrade their already existing three linear axis test bench with two additional rotary axes. The task is to either find an already existing solution or to design, manufacture and install a rotary head on the test bench. The test bench is used to simulate water jet, laser and plasma cutting machines and is designed for internal use by ProCom. It is used to test new developed algorithms of their CNC software but also to test newly developed hardware before it is introduced to the market. The test bench has its axis driven by electrical motors and the additional two rotary axes would also be controlled the same way. The test bench is operated without any process force which means that only its own weight will have to be taken into consideration. The background to this requirement of an extra two axis is that customers are starting to demand a five axis control system for their machines and therefore it must be possible to test and verify the software in a realistic environment. This degree thesis is mostly done with design characteristics and concern from the very start with pre studies, explanation of the machine to the very end of the project with a mounted rotary head. Amoung the proposed rotary heads from the pre-studies, two rotary heads were chosen to go further with to be developed, manufactred and installed. With a modular design, to change between the two heads is possible with only minor effort.

Abstract:
Over the last 40 years manufacturing industry has enjoyed a rapid growth with the support of various computer-aided systems (CAD, CAPP, CAM etc.) known as CAx. Since the first Numerically Controlled (NC) machine appeared in 1952, there have been many advances in CAx resource capabilities. The information integration and interoperability between different manufacturing resources has become an important and popular research area over the last decade. Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines are an important link in the manufacturing chain and the major contributor to the production capacity of manufacturing industry today. However, most of the research has focused on the information integration of upper systems in the CAD/CAPP /CAM/CNC manufacturing chain, leaving the shop floor as an isolated information island. In particular, there is limited opportunity to capture and feed shopfloor knowledge back to the upper systems. Furthermore, the part programs for the machines are not exchangeable due to the. machine specific postprocessors. Thus there is a further need to consider information interoperability between different CNC machine and other systems. This research investigates the reverse transformation of the CNC part programmes into higher level of process information, entitled process comprehension, to enable the shopfloor interoperability. A novel framework of universal process comprehension is specified and designed. The framework provides a reverse direction of information flow from the CNC machine to upper CAx systems, enabling the interoperability and recycling of the shopfloor knowledge. A prototype implementation of the framework is realised and utilised to demonstrate the functionalities through three industrially inspired test components. The major contribution of this research to knowledge is the new vision of the shopfloor interoperability associated with process knowledge capture and reuse. The research shows that process comprehension of part programmes can provide an effective solution to the issues of the shopfloor interoperability and knowledge reuse in manufacturing industries.

A preliminary design of a low-cost, three-axis, computer numerically controlled (CNC) router was completed with the goal of bringing the advantages of numerically controlled machine tools to the woodshop. To reduce cost, a novel single rail design was employed. The number of custom parts was kept to a minimum and, where necessary, every effort was made to minimize manufacturing cost. The novel features of the design include vacuum clamping, the ability to cut joinery at miter angles from 0* to 90*, and force controlled cutting. Many of the components are used quite aggressively (particularly with regard to stiffness), but the accuracy goal of ±0.005 " in X and Y and +0.010" in Z was met.

Abstract:
The development and use of computerized machining tools and equipment within the manufacturing area has opened the door to an abundance of data. But, there is a need to structure the data, make it generic and accessible and define ways of communication in order to maximize the benefits of its utilization. The Line Information System Architecture (LISA) project aims to create an information architecture which aids in capturing and understanding this data by tackling the above mentioned requirements. This thesis is intended to implement the Tweeting machine concept, tweeting useful machining information during operations. The data will be transferred to the LISA architecture, providing users with the possibility to subscribe to the information. Offering useful and structured real-time data, which can be used to e.g. aid in analyzing and decreasing processing flaws, increasing quality, decision making. The solution has been tested and verified using transport communication protocol (TCP) and open communication protocol (OPC) connections. Which have been applied to the 5-axis machining tool HERMLE C 50 U, in the Department of Production Engineering at the Royale Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden. The thesis report will firstly provide the reader with necessary background information regarding the computerized numerical control (CNC) machine used as well as its configuration. Followed by information regarding OPC, TCP and Industrial Ethernet as well as a run through of the operational software used. The programming of the solution is provided in a relatively detailed manner with the hopes that it will provide a good basis for future development of this implementation.

Abstract:
The main research topic of this dissertation thesis deals with the influence of the working accuracy related to large CNC machines on the required workpiece properties. The state-of-the art has constantly been developed and the customer’s requirements directed to manufacturers of the machine tools are increasingly demanding. There is required a high accuracy, reliability, shortening delivery times etc. The manufacturer is expected to fulfill all the customer’s requirements. The machining accuracy is dependent, among others, on the positioning accuracy of a machine tool that represents the position of the cutting tool relative to a workpiece. The accuracy of a particular machine tool is therefore a limiting factor concerned with reaching the highest accuracy and quality of a workpiece. Acceptance test procedures are initially realized within a manufacturing shop floor and then within a customer environment. The main subject of the testing procedures is to verify. basic properties of a machine tool such as basic dimensions of a machine, strokes in all respective coordinates, machine travels and spindle speeds. A machining of a workpiece with a desired precision specified by the customer is also performed. In this thesis, a new methodology to calculate and determine errors concerned with machining on vertical lathes is proposed with the aim of predicting the machining accuracy of CNC machine tools. The objective of this work was to determine the influence of machining accuracy of a CNC machine in connection with a subsequent geometrical accuracy of a workpiece. Considered position of a tool relative to a workpiece will be affected by errors concerned with a kinematical inaccuracy, geometrical errors and errors related to machining forces. A vertical lathe SKIQ 30 produced by TOSHULIN, a.s. has been used as a testing machine on which the proposed methodology has been verified. During processing various calculations in this thesis there has been found out that the machining inaccuracy of the machine – main topic of interest – is influenced by the machining conditions such as cutting conditions, material to be machined and even the setting of working positions of the machine. For instance, a position of the cross slide is determined by a workpiece height and a position of the lathe carriage that is determined by a workpiece diameter and a travel of the slide that is also determined by a workpiece height. It can be stated then that to predict the machining accuracy of work pieces, it is important to know the behavior of the machine in its all range of working envelope. Based on the information acquired about the behavior of the machine, it can be determined an appropriate position for a workpiece setting that allows utilizing the maximum reachable accuracy with respect to the stiffness and geometrical accuracy of the machine tool. An appropriate setting of initial working position may influence the subsequent geometrical accuracy of a workpiece.
