Abstract:
AbstractThe use of medical devices, such as urinary stents, catheters, artificial heart valves, prosthetic joints and other implants, collectively often referred to as “biomaterials” has increased dramatically over the past century, and has become a major part of modern medicine and our daily life. With the aging society, the higher demand on these devices to restore function and quality of life, combined with the ever improving technology within the medical field, the problem of biomaterial-associated infection (BAI) is expected to increase. The most common causative microorganisms in BAI are Staphylococcus aureus, a major pathogen in wound infections, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, the harmless skin commensal. Depending on the type of device and location of application, other pathogens such as coagulase-negative staphylococci, enterococci, streptococci, Propionibacterium acnes and yeast can also cause BAI.Prevention of BAI is a challenging problem, in particular due to the increased risk of resistance development associated with current antibiotic-based strategies. Here we showed the evidence of biofilms as a source for peri-implant tissue colonization, clearly showing the importance of preventive measures to be able to act both against implant and tissue colonization. Subsequently, we described different strategies to prevent BAI and other difficult-to-treat biofilm infections. We conclude that future research should focus on the development of combination devices with both anti-fouling or contact-killing capacities—to protect the implant—and controlled release of an antimicrobial agent to protect the surrounding tissue.

This chapter will explore the virulence factors and pathogenicity mechanisms of Staphylococcus aureus, a major human pathogen responsible for a wide range of infections. It will provide a detailed analysis of the key virulence factors, including surface proteins like adhesins and Protein A, various exotoxins such as alpha-toxin and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), and important enzymes like coagulase and hyaluronidase. The chapter will also examine how these factors contribute to immune evasion, tissue damage, and the formation of biofilms, leading to chronic and healthcare-associated infections. By understanding these mechanisms, we can better combat S. aureus infections and reduce their significant global health impact.

Abstract Blood is a difficult substance to work with: on exposure to almost any surface available until the mid-twentieth century, it clotted and separated serum from a fibrin-cellular coagulum. Thus, even in vitro dialysis from untreated whole blood was impossible, and early attempts at extracorporeal perfusion inevitably failed [1]. However, Prévost and Dumas had shown in 1821 that blood from which the clotting protein fibrin had been removed by whisking did not coagulate[2], and mechanical perfusion of organs (including the kidney) was carried out successfully using defibrinated blood by the mid century [3]. That dark venous blood became redder and arterialized when shaken was known, and the principle of oxygenating blood by agitation was established; kidneys perfused using oxygenated blood were studied by Bunge and Johann Schmiedeberg (1838–1921) in 1876 in Strassburg [4], now part of Germany following the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. These perfusion systems were perfected further by Jacoby, a pupil of Schmiedeberg’s, during the 1890s.

Abstract:
Three types of blood cells exist in the human body: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, in addition to plasma, which takes up 55 percent of the blood’s volume. Red blood cells take up approximately 45 percent of the blood’s volume. They transport oxygen from the lungs to other body parts. White cells defend us against bacterial and viral invasions. Platelets (less than 1 percent of the blood), the third type of blood cells, are sticky little cell fragments that are involved in helping the blood clot, a process known as coagulation. Without platelets (even though they constitute less than 1 percent of blood), our blood would not be able to clot, and we would have uncontrolled bleeding. However, formation of blood clots is a double-edged sword. Clots are beneficial because they heal cuts and wounds; blood clots in the bloodstream are harmful because they block coronary arteries, constrict vital oxygen supplies, and cause heart attacks and strokes, more and more frequent modern maladies as the baby boomers get older. Whenever the body is cut or injured and blood comes into contact with cells outside the bloodstream, a tissue factor on these cells encounters a particular protein within the blood, which triggers the clotting process. In the same vein, a series of other blood factors then come into action and amplify one another to quickly form a jelly-like blood clot. Blood clots form when an enzyme called thrombin marshals fibrin (a blood protein) and platelets (tiny cells that circulate in the blood) to coagulate at the site of an injury. Individuals with no ability to clot have a genetic condition called hemophilia; such people are also known as “bleeders.” Queen Victoria was hemophilic, and she passed on her genes to her many heirs who ruled Europe for over a century. This is why hemophilia is sometimes known as the royal disease. Symptoms of hemophilia manifest only in male offspring. People with hemophilia must periodically administer a clotting factor to their blood to prevent constant bleeding.

Abstract:
The electrosurgical sealing method has risen to prominence in recent years as more vessel sealing procedures are being conducted in minimally invasive surgery. In this study, experiments were conducted to seal 3 and 8 mm diameter vessels in a porcine model with a bipolar electrosurgical device and measure the electrical voltage and current, and temperature distribution in the vessel near the area of the seal. The vessel seal was modeled with finite element ana

Nowadays, there is high consumer demand in the market for simple to prepare, convenient, healthy and natural foods. Paneer or Indian cottage cheese is an acid and heat coagulated milk product which serves as a rich source of animal proteins for the vegetarians. Due to high moisture content (58-60 %), it is highly perishable in nature. Drying of paneer would undoubtedly extend the shelf life of paneer and also help in value-addition of paneer. Dehydrated paneer would find numerous ways to be use. Drying of paneer by conventional methods poses threats including case-hardening and non-uniform inc

In vivo treatment of experimental animals with vitamin K-antagonists induces the accumulation of non-carboxylated coagulation factor precursors in the liver, where they are tightly bound to vitamin K-dependent carboxylase. If hepatic carboxylase is isolated from warfarin-treated animals, it is obtained therefore almost exclusively in the form of an enzyme/substrate complex. If carboxylase is prepared from non-treated animals, on the other hand, the resulting enzyme is predominantly substrate-free.

The U.S. team studied the role of cations and pH on thermolabile (TL-PE) and thermostable (TS-PE), permeation in ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, affinity to ion exchange membranes, mechanism of cation and pH activation, and effect on PE stability. An optimum pH and cation concentration exists for activity and UF permeation, which is specific for each cation type. Incomplete release of PE from a pectin complex resulted in low PE binding to cationic and anionic membranes. Incubation of PE at low pH increases the surface hydrophobicity, especially TL-PE, but the secondary structure of TL-PE is no
