Vile, Matthew. "Gun Control Policy Preference in Context: A Contextually Sensitive Model of Gun Control Policy Preferences." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2006. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/332.

Full text
Abstract:
Using data from the 2000 American National Election Study and the Uniform Crime Reports, this research studies the impact of core values and contextual effects on gun control policy preferences. The research seeks to produce a contextually sensitive model of gun control policy preferences that accounts for the nature of the elite message war regarding the issue of gun control and for both long and short-term contextual factors that might sway individual opinions at the point of stimulus (e.g., the survey question). While the analysis does find conditioning effects, the effects do not conform to the theoretical expectations, and they are generally weaker than expected. In contrast, the research demonstrates the strong connections that formed in the public’s mind between ideological, partisan and gender-based core values and gun control policy preferences. These results are consistent with research that found the effects of political messages often vary in counterintuitive ways due to variance in the strength of the message and political awareness (Zaller 1992). Replicating this research across various time periods permits the investigation of the decay rate of impacts on individual policy preferences created by substantial, one-time contextual effects. It may be that contextual effects have a substantial impact in the short-term, but these short-term impacts are mitigated over the longterm by continual reinforcement of the basic themes employed by elites in the message war surrounding the issue.

Wang, Kaining. "Context-based coalition access control for ubiquitous computing." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27193.

Abstract:
The need for coalition access control among individuals and organizations has increased significantly in the past years as the need for spontaneous access to information increases. However, a significant deterrent to the ability to connect in a spontaneous manner in coalition collaborative applications is the difficulty in users from different domains being able to access resources or services located and owned by other entities. Coalition access control encompasses control mechanisms dealing with access between users of two or more different organizations or enterprises. These users could be co-located or remotely located. The thesis first presents a delegation based D-TMAC model that extends traditional TMAC across organizations for formal coalition environments, and a context-based coalition access control model, which apply context information as conditions on delegation. Then the thesis proposes a Session-based Coalition Access Control Architecture (SCACA) and provides practical implementation that enables dynamic coalition access control over a communication session in a spontaneous manner. The presented system architecture and methodology leverages the IETF SIP protocol as an underlying communication mechanism in order to greatly minimize the administration overhead and rapidly adapt the dynamic nature of access control in spontaneous coalition environments. The result is that, during a spontaneous coalition communication across organizations, every endpoint can access other endpoints' resources and share its own resources to all the other endpoints as well. Moreover, these privileges will dynamically change as the status of the coalition communication changes.

Lane, Alexander M. "Mass Shootings and Gun Control: Obama’s Road to Reform." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/621.

Abstract:
This work is intended to evaluate President Obama’s gun control policies by determining whether stricter federal gun control laws should apply within theUnited States. This paper examines whether setting legal standards at a national level would effectively reduce gun related violence and mass shootings on a local and state level. These include events such as Sandy Hook Elementary inNewton,Connecticut, the Virginia Polytechnic school shootings, and theAuroraTheatershooting inDenver,Colorado. Specifically, could executive orders proposed by the president, such as assault weapon bans, rigorous background checks on gun sales, submission of mental health records to the FBI Databases, and increased aid between states and mental health care institutions effectively reduce horrific incidences of gun related violence. Using gun control data from past and present as our research, we will determine whether stricter gun control policies have deterred violent crimes, murder rates, suicides and mass shootings. Since our research focuses on policy solutions as an alternative to reduce mass shootings, not the psychological make ups and environmental factors of mass shooters, we will omit America’s gun culture as a variable within our study: such as the effects violent video games and movies could have on the psyche of troubled individuals. After carefully analyzing gun date related to gun violence and crime, this work will attempt to suggest whether or not President Obama’s gun control policies will pass in Congress and which legislation will be the most effective in limiting gun violence and mass shootings.

Abstract:
At an extreme, coalition partners can divide tasks and individually decide policy in their ministerial jurisdictions in a compartmentalized way. At the other extreme, parties sharing office can compromise and collectively set policy in each dimension regardless of portfolio allocation. In its first paper, this dissertation provides a theoretical account of this variation, trying to unravel the conditions under which one type of governance is more likely than the other. The second paper tests empirically the implications of these arguments on the way coalition partners keep tabs on each other through the establishment of control mechanisms. Finally, an empirical exercise is offered in the third paper to study the extent to which voters assess each coalition partner differently depending on the type of coalition they face. Variation in the types of coalition governance, we conclude, is an important factor to take into account in political science research in the field.

Abstract:
The recent mass shooting on October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada has been marked in history as the worst mass shooting in the United States to this point. The details of the shooting beg the question, is it coincidence that it happened in Nevada, a state with some of the least restrictive gun control laws? Mass shootings have become an unfortunate part of reality in the United States, but these are fairly uncommon occurrences. While they are horrific and deserve attention, daily gun violence cannot be forgotten. In the face of such a multitude of gun violence, what can be done to prevent future violence from occurring? This paper compares Nevada and California, two states that are geographically similar, but could not be more different when it comes to gun control. The paper draws connections between state gun control laws and gun violence trends in an attempt to determine what the best course of action is for addressing the problem.

Abstract:
The need for Shared Situational Awareness (SSA) in accomplishing joint missions by coalition militaries, law enforcement, the intelligence community, and the private sector creates a unique challenge to providing access control. In this thesis we investigate the capabilities and limitations of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to control the dissemination of SSA in a coalition environment. Our case study is that of controlling access to SSA in the Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) environment. MDA exemplifies both rapid change in membership of coalitions and the roles of coalition participants. We explore the access policy and roles played by the participants in the MDA environment, in addition to the characteristics of those roles. We make use of feasible scenarios to provide us with a base for applying models to the situation. The models that are applied to the scenario provide the formal methods that prove that RBAC policies and derivatives such as Distributed Role Based Access Control (DRBAC), Coalition Based Access Control (CBAC) and Temporal Role Based Access Control (TRBAC) can be used in conjunction with the Information Broker (IB) concept to provide adequate access control policies.

Abstract:
Gun control is a topic that has a variety of complex aspects. Creating a solution for gun violence has been a difficult task for the President and Congress in the last few years. The main reasons for this are the many different groups with a vested interest in the topic. There are also so a number of issues that contribute to gun violence in America that it becomes extremely difficult to pin point one exact problem. Trying to reduce the amount of guns that criminals and the mentally ill get ahold of is an important aspect when looking at the issue gun control. Removing flawed systems, inconsistent laws and other loopholes will result in fewer individuals that should not own guns from getting their hands on deadly weapons. These aspects are extremely difficult to solve all at one time, and require time and patients by Congress and the President for results to be seen. The most important part is fixing issues one at a time, and the ones that can cost innocent people’s lives. While there are many opinions towards gun control, one point both sides of this issue can agree on is that the murder of innocent individuals needs to stop immediately. Careful analysis, with accurate research will allow issues to be solved in an appropriate manner. Making it significantly difficult for criminals to access gun is a major step in the right direction for both the federal government and individual states.

Abstract:
Public opinion and the various aspects that can influence opinion and therefore political behavior are invaluable resources in the American political system. The ways in which individuals perceive, process, and understand information is vital to how voters behave on Election Day, which is why understanding how individual opinion, and subsequently public opinion can be affected by information sources is essential. Understanding how to influence the perceived credibility of a particular source of information is a powerful tool in influencing public opinion and the democratic process. In order to gain a thorough understanding of some of the ways in which information sources can influence public opinion, a survey experiment was conducted in the Spring of 2015 at the University of Arizona to examine the effect of an author's demographic characteristics on his or her perceived credibility, and therefore, public opinion with regard to gun control and affirmative action.

Abstract:
I looked at mass shootings that have happened in the United States in the past decade and was inspired to do research and discover what was behind these tragedies. In my Honors Thesis paper, I dug up important historical background and context that has given rise to the creation of the 2nd Amendment. I took a stab at assessing the significance and profound impact that the original constitutional framework wages on 21st century America. From there, I discussed the implications of Supreme Court precedent in individual gun rights cases that have interpreted 2nd Amendment doctrine. Next, I created a comprehensive assessment of gun laws broken down by state. I also provided a brief summary of Congress's Bill No Break session that attempted to curb national gun violence in the aftermath of Sandy Hook. At the end, I shed light on a couple of countries; Australia and Japan, who have scaled back access to guns and initiated educational gun safety programs that promote national gun policy reform. I used these two standard-bearers as a collective model for the U.S. to try to emulate in terms of enhancing awareness and understanding about the real danger that guns pose to society.

Abstract:
In 2008, the Supreme Court announced its decision in the landmark Second Amendment case, D.C. v. Heller. In its decision, the Court construed the scope of the right to bear arms for the first time. To that end, the Court found that the right to arms is an individual right, unconnected with military service. In this essay, I use the opinion of the Court and the dissents thereto as a lens by which to view the history and historiography of the right to bear arms, as well as the Supreme Court's jurisprudence on the subject. In the course of this analysis, I argue that there are numerous problems with the Court's reasoning, as well as that of the dissents. Further, complications and ambiguities in the historical record have contributed to the misunderstanding of the original meaning of the Second Amendment and its appropriate interpretation as part of the Constitutional text. I argue that the proper interpretation of the Second Amendment is one that construes the right as robust and individual, worthy of its place in the Bill of Rights, but certainly subject to reasonable regulation.

Skamangas, Emmanuel Epaminondas. "New Optimal-Control-Based Techniques for Midcourse Guidance of Gun-Launched Guided Projectiles." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/102752.

Full text
Abstract:
The following is an exploration into the optimal guidance and control of gun-launched guided projectiles. Unlike their early counterparts, modern-day gun-launched projectiles are capable of considerable accuracy. This ability is enabled through the use of control surfaces, such as fins or wings, which allow the projectile to maneuver towards a target. These aerodynamic features are part of a control system which lets the projectile achieve some effect at the target. With the advent of very high velocity guns, such as the Navy's electromagnetic railgun, these systems are a necessary part of the projectile design. This research focuses on a control scheme that uses the projectile's angle of attack as the single control in the development of an optimal control methodology that maximizes impact velocity, which is directly related to the amount of damage in icted on the target. This novel approach, which utilizes a reference trajectory as a seed for an iterative optimization scheme, results in an optimal control history for a projectile. The investigation is geared towards examining how poor an approximation of the true optimal solution that reference trajectory can be and still lead to the determination of an optimal control history. Several different types of trajectories are examined for their applicability as a reference trajectory. Although the use of aerodynamic control surfaces enables control of the projectile, there is a potential down side. With steady development of guns with longer ranges and higher launch velocities, it becomes increasingly likely that a projectile will y into a region of the atmosphere (and beyond) in which there is not sufficient air ow over the control surfaces to maintain projectile control. This research is extended to include a minimum dynamic pressure constraint in the problem; the imposition of such a constraint is not examined in the literature. Several methods of adding the constraint are discussed and a number of cases with varying dynamic pressure limits are evaluated. As a result of this research, a robust methodology exists to quickly obtain an optimal control history, with or without constraints, based on a rough reference trajectory as input. This methodology finds its applicability not only for gun-launched weapons, but also for missiles and hypersonic vehicles.<br>Doctor of Philosophy<br>As the name implies, optimal control problems involve determining a control history for a system that optimizes some aspect of the system's behavior. In aerospace applications, optimal control problems often involve finding a control history that minimizes time of ight, uses the least amount of fuel, maximizes final velocity, or meets some constraint imposed by the designer or user. For very simple problems, this optimal control history can be analytically derived; for more practical problems, such as the ones considered here, numerical methods are required to determine a solution. This research focuses on the optimal control problem of a gun-launched guided projectile. Guided projectiles have the potential to be significantly more accurate than their unguided counterparts; this improvement is achieved through the use of a control mechanism. For this research, the projectile is modeled using a single control approach, namely using the angle of attack as the only control for the projectile. The angle of attack is the angle formed between the direction the projectile is pointing and the direction it is moving (i.e., between the main body axis and the velocity vector of the projectile). An approach is then developed to determine an optimal angle of attack history that maximizes the projectile's final impact velocity. While this problem has been extensively examined by other researchers, the current approach results in the analytical determination of the costate estimates that eliminates the need to iterate on their solutions. Subsequently, a minimum dynamic pressure constraint is added to the problem. While extensive investigation has been conducted in the examination of a maximum dynamic pressure constraint for aerospace applications, the imposition of a minimum represents a novel body of work. For an aerodynamically controlled projectile, (i.e., one controlled with movable surfaces that interact with the air stream), dropping below a minimum dynamic pressure may result in loss of sufficient control. As such, developing a control history that accommodates this constraint and prevents the loss of aerodynamic control is critical to the ongoing development of very long range, gun-launched guided projectiles. This new methodology is applied with the minimum dynamic pressure constraint imposed and the resulting optimal control histories are then examined. In addition, the possibility of implementing other constraints is also discussed.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>Despite the political impetus for greater multilateralism in international military operations, recent coalitions including U.S. forces reflect a trend toward increasing U.S. dominance and decreasing allied participation. As the United States continues to invest in its military with research, development and acquisition budgets at least double that of any other nation, it fields technologies so advanced with respect to its allies as to leave them incompatible for combined operations. Recent coalition operations suggest that there is a close relationship between technological asymmetries created by partner contributions and the structures formed as the coalition assembles. Using Desert Storm and Operation Allied Force as case studies, this thesis identifies a systemic relationship between technological advantage and coalition dominance. As a coalition seeks to reduce aggregate risk, it relies on technologies that offer the greatest effectiveness. This reliance causes the coalition to divert combat burden to the technologically dominant partner which, in turn, imposes its operational culture. This thesis concludes that the technological transformation currently underway in the U.S. Department of Defense conflicts with U.S. political initiatives to promote greater multilateralism in combat operations by forcing allies to rely on U.S. technologies thereby creating more unilateral operations.<br>Outstanding Thesis

Abstract:
Gun and gun turret systems are the primary units of the weapon systems of an aircraft. They are required to hit targets accurately during operations. That is why a complete, high precision control of weapon systems is required. This function is provided by accurate modeling of the system and the design of a suitable controller. This study presents the modeling of and controller design for the gun and turret system for an aircraft. For the controller design purpose, first the mathematical model of the system is constructed. Then the controller is designed to position the turret system as the target comes into sight. The reference input to the controller will either be obtained from a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) unit or from a HCU (Hand Control Unit). The basic specification for the controller is to hold theerror signal within the 5.5&deg<br>positioning envelope. This specification is satisfied by designing Linear Quadratic Gaussian and Internal Model Control type controllers. The performance of the overall system has been examined both by simulation studies and on the real physical system. Results have shown that the designed system is well over being sufficient.

Abstract:
Bibliography: p. 369-419.<br>Since the election of the new government in South Africa in 1994, a process of reconstructing and prioritising social problems has been underway in which firearms have been afforded prominence. A 'gun problem' has been constructed based on the traditional premise that illegal private possession is the issue and most interventions have targeted the reduction of unlicensed guns. However, despite more than 35 years of research worldwide, this foundational premise lacks empirical support. Moreover relevant work on South Africa has been scarce. Utilising this as the basic assumption of a contemporary conception of the 'gun problem' would thus seem unwise. Hence an alternate approach was adopted, starting with the question of whether guns were actually problematic in this context. A case study was conducted using a complete sample (1555) of fatal shootings in metropolitan Cape Town from 1984 to 1991. The overall aim was to paint a comprehensive picture of lethal gun use that would enable the identification and prioritising of problems, and the shaping of interventions. A pencil-and-paper device was constructed to extract information from mortuary registers, inquest and criminal court records. Variables included characteristics of victims, shooters, circumstances, weapons, injuries, and the legal process. Specific attention was paid to restraint in homicides; various indicators were used to •measure levels of minimum force and proportionality. The data were transferred into a customised computer database for analysis. Statistical significance was assessed using chi-square tests and the analysis of standardised residuals for selected single and cross-tabulated variables.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to offer a socio-psychological perspective to the American gun control debate by examining the concept of conflicting worldviews of Americans suggested by Donald Braman and Dan M. Kahan. This study tested their theory of dominance of individualism over collectivism in the United States and how it could have affected Americans’ values in terms of national firearm policies. The data analysed consists of two political debates regarding guns in 2016, one with the president at the time, Barack Obama, and another with the presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The transcripts of these debates were analysed semantically utilising Carl Graumann’s dialogical approach to discourse analysis. The results support the theory of dominance of individualism in the United States as well as the hypothesis that individualistic values show particularly, but not exclusively, in arguments against stricter gun control<br>Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoitus on ottaa osaa yhdysvaltalaiseen aselakikeskusteluun sosio-psykologisesta näkökulmasta tutkimalla Donald Bramanin and Dan M. Kahanin konseptia Amerikkalaisten ristiriitaisista elämänkatsomuksista aiheeseen liittyen.

Hardwick, Marie. "The Second Amendment: A States’ Right, for the People, Protected by the Federal Government." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/2116.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the creation of the Second Amendment and how it has been interpreted over time. The purpose of this thesis is to understand present-day debates over gun control and offer an interpretation of the right that best suits the modern era. By analyzing the history of gun ownership in the United States, it is clear that the intention of the Second Amendment was to extend the right to the individual and should not be limited to collective use. As the Bill of Rights was extended to protect the people from state governments, the history of states’ rights in the regulation of firearms should be taken into account. With a country divided in their views on gun control policy, states should maintain the power to regulate arms, with federal courts intervening only when legislation is particularly radical. This thesis offers an interpretation of the Second Amendment best suited for the nation on both historical and practical by investigating the most prominent debates today: individual vs. collective rights, federal vs. states’ rights. With all things considered, this thesis concludes the most suitable interpretation of the Second Amendment for the people is: a right of the people protected, as individuals, from federal infringement, and regulated by the states, that are checked by the federal courts only when deemed necessary.

Skinner, Caroline. "Introducing STS Scholarship to the Gun Policy Debate in United States Society." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2017. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1015.

Abstract:
The following thesis will merge the field of legal studies with the field of Science, Technology, and Society, and will focus on issues surrounding the gun control debate. The goal is to ultimately bring new light to this hot- button legal topic through the use of STS scholarship. STS tools and theories, which have previously been absent from most gun control discussions, have much to contribute to the discourse in terms of motivating the need for gun control, fully understanding the user-gun relationship, breaking down misconceptions about the technology and its role in society, and further understanding the complex societal network within which guns exist in America. This will begin first with a discussion of the legal history and background of firearms in the United States, and will be followed by an STS analysis of technological agency and somnambulism as they can be applied to guns. Following this, the Actor Network in which firearms in America are imbedded will be explored, in order to better understand why they have been so difficult to regulate. Although this thesis will be heavily policy and law-focused, the aim is not to propose any specific new policy, but instead to use STS to conceptualize gun issues from a new perspective that will allow misconceptions and blockades to be confronted head-on.

Karayumak, Turker. "Modeling And Stabilization Control Of A Main Battle Tank." Phd thesis, METU, 2011. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12613767/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, a parametric model for a main battle tank electric gun turret drive system stabilization controller has been developed. Main scope was the study of the muzzle deviation due to barrel flexibility. Traverse and elevation dynamics has been modeled to include the drive-line and barrel flexibilities. Order of the models has been kept large enough to cover the frequencies dominant in the interest scope but at the same time low enough to create a parametric model which can be used in real-time fire control computers. Therefore a 5-dof elevation and a 7-dof traverse models have been implemented. These models have been used to design a classical feedback and feedforward controllers which performed good enough to meet 0.5mrad stabilization accuracies. After satisfactory results have been obtained from the stabilization controller, a special coincidence algorithm has been implemented by time-series analysis of the disturbance signal which is constantly being measured by the feedforward gyro. Necessity of predicting the future muzzle angular orientation due to the latency in fire is discussed and by using autoregressive modeling of the disturbance signal, future values of the disturbance signal has been entered into the observer model. The prediction horizon has been set to the time delay value between the trigger is pulled by the gunner and the ammunition exit from the muzzle. By checking the future coincidence within a very narrow windowing (0.05mrad) a 100% first round hit probability in theory has been achieved. This is assured since the coincidence inhibited the fire signals which were to miss the aiming point with a large error.

Abstract:
This research sought to explore media framing theory, first introduced by Erving Goffman, which asserts that the media portray certain items in a way that affects awareness, salience and tone of those items. There has long been debate about media framing especially as it pertains to the framing of violent events. Mass shootings are of particular interest because of the graphic and often senseless nature of the crime. This study looked particularly at the 2011 Tucson, Arizona mass shooting. A content analysis of articles between February 7, 2010, and November 8, 2011, was conducted to explore media framing of gun control after the Tucson, Arizona mass shooting involving U. S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords. Results showed an equal amount of articles with a negative or neutral tone, with the tone shifting to being more frequently neutral after the shooting. The topic shifted toward legislation, adding further support to media framing theory. These findings have impacts for media and public relations.

Abstract:
The Multiple Streams model developed by John Kingdon (1995) and Nikolaos Zahariadis (2007) provides a valuable framework for understanding the nature of policy change. This investigation draws extensively upon the Multiple Streams framework in order to understand the development of gun-control policy initiatives under President Barack Obama. The investigation uses a case-study approach with in-depth analysis of four different mass-shooting events that took place in the United States between 2009 and 2012. Reconstruction of the shooting events and detailed parsing of the Obama administration's official responses to each incident, when viewed through the Multiple Streams lens, clearly explain why Obama's aggressive policy initiative was so delayed in its emergence in spite of several shootings and the President's clearly stated belief that gun-reform was a necessary step for the federal government. While the term “policy change” is broad and may encompass all sorts of governmental responsiveness, the term herein should be interpreted in the narrowest sense: exclusively encompassing legislative initiatives. Ultimately, the investigation concludes that numerous factors, but most prominently concerns about the timing and results of the 2010 Midterm and 2012 General Elections, prevented an aggressive pursuit of gun-reform prior to January 2013. The tragic shooting of 28 people in Newtown, Connecticut, then served as a prime focusing event for the President to aggressively engage a long-standing goal.<br>M.A.<br>Masters<br>Political Science<br>Sciences<br>Political Science; American and Comparative Politics

Abstract:
Public Health<br>Ph.D.<br>Annually firearms kill more than 30,000 individuals and injure more than 50,000 individuals, resulting in costs of $45 million to over $1 billion in the United States. Traditionally firearms were addressed as a criminal justice problem, but for more than 30 years, public health and injury prevention specialists have worked to address the problem of firearm injuries through surveillance, education, research, and laws. Firearm legislation is multijurisdictional across the federal, state, and local governments, but the majority of activity is at the state levels. Firearm injury prevention efforts must navigate a politically diverse arena dominated by social regulatory politics in order to affect change. This study presents newly analyzed data on seven firearms laws: child access prevention, minimum age to purchase/possess a handgun, stand your ground, large capacity ammunition limits, Saturday night specials and assault weapons bans. A goal of the study was to create a 50 states longitudinal dataset in order to investigate the relationship between internal state political and demographics characteristics and firearm policy diffusion. The study findings are presented across three manuscripts, which address the trends of enactment of the laws, the analysis of the six gun control laws, and an analysis of one permissive firearm law (stand your ground laws). A panel data set was created from publicly available sources for each state from 1993 to 2010. General Estimating Equations (GEE) were used to evaluate the impact of citizen pressures, lobby pressures, legislative characteristics, and demographic data on the adoption of the seven selected laws. Study findings identified waves of adoption of the firearm laws across politically and demographically similar states in the early study years (1993-94) and the later study years (2005-10). States with Democratic state governments were more likely to pass gun control laws while states with Republican state governments were more likely to pass stand your ground laws. Poverty was also a statistically significant variable for the passage of the laws: states with lower poverty levels were more likely to pass gun control laws while states with higher poverty levels were more likely to pass stand your ground laws. However, aside from legislation to ensure consistency with federal law, most states are not responding to the public call for regulation as measured by the enactment of the selected laws. Instead, a trend of permissive firearms laws is rapidly spreading across the 50 states. Firearm injury prevention advocates should not be deterred by political environments. Rather, they should respond to cues to optimize change for injury prevention. Understanding mechanisms for firearm policy adoption, such as the role of legislative characteristics may help researchers and firearm injury prevention advocates focus limited resources to introduce bills in policy-friendly states. This dissertation contributes to the firearm injury prevention literature by applying policy diffusion theories and analysis techniques to firearm injury prevention efforts. Findings support the literature that internal state political and demographic characteristics guide the adoption of firearm laws.<br>Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
Statistics show that the number of mass shootings and involved fatalities have drastically increased over the last five years. The framing of these attacks in the mass media has a substantial impact on the public opinion on the causes of shootings, possible prevention methods and gun control in general. Following study aims to uncover potential ideological influences of political tendencies of liberal and conservative newspapers on the media coverage of the most recent mass shooting in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. A qualitative content analysis with a general structural analysis of 39 articles from the liberal newspaper The New York Times and the conservative newspaper The Washington Times and a more detailed Critical Discourse Analysis of the frames of blame, prevention methods and gun control were conducted. Findings show that The Washington Times´media coverage on blame attributions and prevention methods mainly included frames of mental health. The focus in The New York Times´ coverage is clearly on gun issues and the demand for gun restrictions. The topic gun control is positively framed by The New York Times. The Washington Times, however, framed gun control in connection with conspiracy theories and thus portrayed it in a more negative light. The findings prove an influence of the newspapers´ political tendencies and ideologies on the media coverage of the Florida mass shooting.

(ii) In the case it does affect crime, are there spillover effects on crime rates in neighboring states? We explore state-level changes in gun control legislation in the U.S. from 1986 to 2014, which show a national trend of lowering the requirements for issuing a CCW permit. By employing a differences-in-differences strategy we find that lowering CCW demands raised drug-related crime rates by 15%, on average, in counties within states where the law was changed. Spillover effects in neighboring states also play an important role. In the counties across the state border (but close to it), violent and drug-related crime rates raised, on average, by 13% and 15%, respectively. We also find evidence that such spillover effects are spatial in nature. The results are robust to a variety of tests and are not driven by differential pre-trends.

Abstract:
Currently, there is no known research on teaching gun safety skills to individuals with developmental disabilities. Research has shown that children typically engage in gunplay behaviors if they find a firearm. These behaviors can lead to unintentional firearm injuries and even death, especially for young children. Previous research has shown the success of video modeling for teaching various skills to individuals with autism. This study examined the effectiveness of video modeling for teaching gun safety skills to three children with autism spectrum disorder, and found that video modeling was effective for one participant, but in situ training was needed to promote maintenance. For a second participant, IST was effective for skill acquisition and maintenance. Finally, a modified IST procedure was effective for a third participant when implemented by a trainer but not when implemented by his mother.
