This dissertation explores the growing field of study around Maritime Security. While an increasingly common sub-heading in American naval strategy documents, maritime security operations are largely framed around individual threats (i.e. counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics). Here, we endeavor to explore how a seemingly disparate set of transnational issues fit into a more coherent framework to give greater theoretical substance to the notion of Maritime Security as a distinct concept. Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The policing and monitoring of South Africa's coastline and economic exclusion zone is made di cult not only by the size of the area of interest, but also by the limited resources available for maritime detection and policing. As a consequence, illegal activities, such as smuggling, poaching and illegal border crossings, are often conducted with impunity. Conventional approaches to monitoring coastal areas, such as the use of patrol boats, port inspections and aircraft surveillance, may be augmented by advances in technolog

Abstract:
This work presents new methodological approaches and perspectives on the relationship between past humans and maritime environments by focusing specifically on the geochemical traces left by the users and inhabitants of coastlines. In order to do so it proposes four novel scientific techniques presented in four case-study papers, together with best practice protocols that archaeologists can use to conduct similar studies on other sites. These methods were designed to allow for convenient data collection, fast sample processing, sound statistical analysis, and meaningful data interpretations; a
