When common epoxy coatings were applied directly on high temperature (usually about 70°C) steel surface, some defects would occur in coating film, such as bubbles, pinholes, loosen and poor quality flow leveling property, etc. These defects lead to reduction in coating’s adhesion, physical properties and anti-penetrability, shorten service life of coatings greatly, making coating losing their protection function. Main reasons for those defects were analyzed briefly in this paper. In high temperature environment, solvents or other volatile organic compounds (VOC) in coatings will volatilize fas

Abstract:
Abstract This research delivers an integrated performance of generic coating-substrate systems under impact loading, and comprehends the understanding of underpinning failure mechanisms. This investigation thus benchmarks the coating design process for high impact stress applications. Repeated severe impacts to the coatings often result in poor performance by cracking and delamination from the coating-substrate interface. The durability and delamination resistance of coatings depend on the choice of coating and substrate materials, coating deposition process and service conditions. The design

Abstract Wollastonite coating deposited on Ti-6Al-4V substrate was prepared using atmospheric plasma spraying technology. Scan electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to investigate the microstructure, surface morphology and phase compositions of coatings. Simulated body fluid tests were carried out to evaluate the bioactivity of the coating. Osteoblasts culturing test was used to examine the cytocompatibility of wollastonite coatings. The tensile bonding strength of the coating was measured with ASTM C-633 methods. The results obtained indicated t

Abstract:
This project focuses specifically on the mechanical properties of a pipeline coating in relation to the need to use imported or site-processed bedding and padding materials to create the pipelines habitat. This project assesses whether mainline and field joint coatings, typically utilized for pipeline protection, possessed sufficient mechanical resistance to withstand backfilling, commissioning and service with bedding and padding materials that had undergone minimal processing. The project was carried out in two phases, the first involved a series of large-scale tests to assess the impact, pe

The objective of this project was to determine the pipeline steel corrosion rate beneath a sand layer and polymer coating. An analysis was performed to correlate the corrosion rate of steel with the permeability of oxygen through the coating. The effectiveness of cathodic protection was evaluated for various sand or coating conditions. The findings are based upon the results of experiments to measure (a) the corrosion rate and electrochemical behavior of steel, (b) the oxygen permeability in soils and through coatings, (c) the electrical properties of coatings and (d) the effects of carbon dio

Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and Edison Welding Institute (EWI) created both laboratory and infield girth weld samples to evaluate the effects of weld geometry and hydrogen off-gassing on the performance of protective coatings. Laboratory-made plate welds were used to tightly control geometric differences and in-field welds were created to mimic real-world welding conditions and hydrogen off-gassing rates. These welds were then coated and tested with accelerated corrosion techniques to evaluate the coatings' effectiveness. Simulated girth welds investigated geometric effects on the performan

The need to improve energy efficiency of the building stock has led to a continuous increase in the implementation of exterior thermal insulation systems, such as ETICS. Progressively, these systems are being applied with darker colours, increasing the concern for hygrothermal behaviour and durability. Despite the significant developed studies, very few reports regarding their optical properties are available. The optical and catalytic capacity turns nanomaterials into excellent candidates for use in finishing coatings with high solar reflectance with dark colours without affecting the aesthet

The selection and prioritization of field locations that most warrant direct examination of the pipe or other maintenance activities requires prediction of the coating conditions and the environmental conditions underneath a disbonded coating, which may support corrosion or cracking. Current above ground measurements provide little information and to improve our ability of site-selection, this project considered a combined experimental and modeling approach to specifically identify those coating properties and environmental conditions that can lead to damaging SCC environments. Abstract:
The field application of pipeline repair and rehabilitation coatings can be greatly dependent upon the ambient conditions on the day of the scheduled repair. In some cases, such as the application of FBE at girth welds, temporary shelters can be built over the girth weld area to protect pipe from the elements. However, for the majority of pipeline applications, coatings must be applied to a pipe surface that is not optimized for coating application. Specifically, pipelines which are in service during the repair coating operation will be at the temperature of the product flowing through them re

Solar panel performance can be impacted when panel surfaces are coated with substances like dust, dirt, snow, or ice that scatter and/or absorb light and may reduce efficiency. As a consequence, time and resources are required to clean solar panels during and after extreme weather events or whenever surface coating occurs. Treating solar panels with chemical coatings that shed materials may decrease the operating costs associated with solar panel maintenance and cleaning.
