Abstract:

El virrey segundo conde de Revillagigedo produjo en la carrocería novohispana, que desde inicios del siglo XVIII vivía un rico desarrollo barroco, un cambio hacia los modelos carroceros ingleses de signo neoclásico. El virrey fue esencial en ello, tanto por el uso de coches ingleses, como por dictar una inédita legislación que trató de articular el ámbito del carruaje. Junto a Revillagigedo, destacó su carrocero, Joaquín de Castro, del que haremos un primer esbozo profesional que evidencia el enorme desarrollo del coche en Nueva España al final del virreinato.

Abstract:

La carrocería novohispana, surgida en el siglo XVI, tiene sus antecedentes en la carretería, vinculada a la propia Conquista, y en el envío desde España en la misma centuria de los primeros coches de caballos, lo que generalizó su uso fuera de Europa. De inmediato se hicieron también en la Nueva España, desarrollando su manufactura e institucionalizando su uso en el XVII, de forma paralela a lo ocurrido en la metrópoli, para abastecer a las elites sociales de un nuevo tipo de obra de arte con el cual proclamar de forma ostentosa su preeminencia política, económica y social. Para atender la enorme demanda de coches y sistematizar la profesión, se desgajó en 1706 del de carpinteros el gremio de carroceros de la ciudad de México, cuyas primeras ordenanzas son analizadas comprándolas con las españolas para comprender su significado.

Por varias décadas, entrelazar mecánicamente dos moléculas circulares de manera consistente no había sido nada simple. Mucho menos el ensartar de manera estable una molécula lineal en una circular. Fueron hechos fortuitos los que llevaron a dos pioneros a descubrir independientemente la manera de realizar eficientemente estas hazañas. De esta manera fueroncreados el catenano y el rotaxano. Pronto se pudo vislumbrar la aplicación de estos en el diseño de interruptores, sensores, válvulas, canales, todos deescala molecular. La máxima proeza la llevó a cabo un tercer científico construyendo un nanocoche móvil con tracción en las cuatro ruedas.

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">El trabajo en la industria es complejo. Así lo constató a principios del siglo pasado Frederick W. Taylor, por lo que se dedicó a desglosar el trabajo hasta obtener fases en las que sólo era necesario realizar una secuencia de pocos movimientos que los trabajadores tenían que practicar hasta alcanzar un máximo nivel de productividad. De esta manera, nació el concepto del "taylorismo" y en aquella época, también se afirma que Ford dijo, aunque nunca se confirmó, que el cliente podía comprar cualquier tipo de coche, siempre y cuando sea un Ford y sea de color negro. Entretanto ya no nos damos por satisfechos sólo con automóviles negros. Más bien tendemos a personalizar cada vez más nuestros coches, adquiriendo equipos opcionales como aire acondicionado, calefacción para los asientos, techos practicables, faros antiniebla, sistemas de navegación o portaesquíes. Pero, la tendencia en favor de la individualización no se limita a los automóviles. También afecta otros ámbitos de nuestras vidas, ya sean la vivienda, los muebles o la vestimenta. A todo ello se suma la exigencia de tiempos de suministro más cortos, productos de máxima calidad y precios razonables.</span>

El desarrollo sostenible —así como algunos otros relatos en la órbita de la conservación medioambiental— suele utilizarse retóricamente como recurso publicitario para mejorar una imagen de marca. En esa línea, se presenta aquí una propuesta didáctica basada en el análisis crítico del discurso de una muestra de anuncios de televisión. Se presta especial atención a la industria del automóvil, por tratarse de una actividad con enormes repercusiones medioambientales, así como por su impacto mediático y en la cultura popular. Se pone así de manifiesto que en torno al coche siguen gravitando discursos persuasivos más emocionales que racionales, como forma de soslayar el verdadero debate en torno a los desafíos sociales y ambientales actuales.

A dissertação propõe-se a compreender qual o panorama arquitectónico em que se enquadram as duas obras de Oscar Niemeyer e Paulo Mendes da Rocha em Portugal, respectivamente o Casino Park Hotel (1966-1976/79) e o novo Museu Nacional dos Coches (2008 - em construção). A distância cronológica de cerca de quatro décadas entre a realização dos projectos, as únicas obras construídas de dois grandes arquitectos brasileiros no país, conduz a algumas questões às quais se pretende obter resposta com o desenvolvimento do trabalho. Porquê que entre a sua execução decorre esse largo espaço de tempo? Quais os motivos que conduzem ao hiato? Como se definia o panorama arquitectónico português durante a realização dos dois projectos? Qual o contributo dessas obras? Em que pontos se aproximam? O estudo foca assim sobre a relação da arquitectura moderna brasileira e o seu contributo para a arquitectura portuguesa e as causas que conduzem ao desaparecimento dessa aproximação, assim como a conjuntura da arquitectura moderna brasileira; ABSTRACT: The paper proposes to understand what is the architectonic panorama in which the two works of Oscar Niemeyer and Paulo Mendes da Rocha in Portugal fit, respectively Casino Park Hotel (1966-1976/79) and the new National Coach Museum (2008 - under construction). The chronological distance of about four decades between the projects’ completion, the only constructed works of two great Brazilian architects in the country, leads to some questions to which the paper intends to respond. Why between its executions, elapses that large time? What are the reasons that lead to the gap? How was the Portuguese architectonic panorama defined during the two projects’ accomplishment? What is the contribution of these works? On what points they draw near each other? The study focuses on the relation of modern Brazilian architecture, its contribution to Portuguese architecture and the causes that lead to the disappearance of this approach, as well as the conjuncture of modern Brazilian architecture.

The objective of this dissertation is to present a firm’s business model innovation (BMI) and organisational change during the servitization process. It mainly aims to produce new knowledge on BMI and the factors that influence the transformation process and organisational change during servitization in the automotive firm. A qualitative, multi- case research design was employed in this research. The data were obtained through secondary sources, including annual reports, press notes, media releases, websites, and auto magazines. L’objectiu de la present tesi doctoral és presentar la innovació en model de negoci d’una empresa i el canvi organitzatiu que l’acompanya en el procés de servitització. Es proposa generar coneixement nou en l’àmbit de la innovació en model de negoci i els factors que impacten el procés de transformació i el canvi organitzatiu de la servitització d’una empresa d’automoció. S’apliquen tècniques qualitatives i un disseny metodològic de casos d’estudi. Abstract:

One of the salient features of the human cochlea is the incredible dynamic range it possesses—the loudest bearable sound is 10,000,000 times greater than the softest detectable sound; this is in part due to an active process. More than twelve thousand hairlike cells known as outer hair cells are believed to expand and contract in time to amplify cochlear motions. However, the cochlea’s response is more than just the sum of its parts: the local properties of outer hair cells can have unexpected consequences for the global behaviour of the system. One such consequence is the existence of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), sounds that (sometimes spontaneously!) propagate out of the cochlea to be detected in the ear canal. In this doctoral thesis, a classical, lumped-element model is used to study the cochlea and to simulate click-evoked and spontaneous OAEs. The original parameter values describing the microscopic structures of the cochlea are re-tuned to match several key features of the cochlear response in humans. The frequency domain model is also recast in a formulation known as state space; this permits the calculation of linear instabilities given random perturbations in the cochlea which are predicted to produce spontaneous OAEs. The averaged stability results of an ensemble of randomly perturbed models have been published in [(2008) ‘Statistics of instabilities in a state space model of the human cochlea,’ J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124(2), 1068-1079]. These findings support one of the prevailing theories of SOAE generation. Nonlinear simulations of OAEs and the model’s response to various stimuli are performed in the time domain. Features observed in the model include the saturation of the forces generated by the OHCs, compression of amplitude growth with increasing stimulus level, harmonic and intermodulation distortion, limit cycle oscillations that travel along the cochlear membranes, and the mutual suppression of nearby linear instabilities.

Abstract:

[Truncated abstract] The cochlea presumably possesses a number of regulatory mechanisms to maintain cochlear sensitivity in the face of disturbances to its function. Evidence for such mechanisms can be found in the time-course of the recovery of CAP thresholds during experimental manipulations, and in observations of slow oscillations in cochlear micromechanics following exposure to low-frequency tones (the “bounce phenomenon”) and other perturbations. To increase our understanding of these oscillatory processes within the cochlea, and OHCs in particular, investigations into cochlear regulation were carried out using a combination of mathematical modelling of the ionic and mechanical interactions likely to exist within the OHCs, and electrophysiological experiments conducted in guinea pigs. The electrophysiological experiments consisted of electrocochleographic recordings and, in some cases, measurement of otoacoustic emissions, during a variety of experimental perturbations, including the application of force to the cochlear wall, exposure to very-low-frequency tones, injection of direct current into scala tympani, and intracochlear perfusions of artificial perilymph containing altered concentrations of potassium, sodium, and sucrose. To obtain a panoramic view of cochlear regulation under these conditions, software was written to enable the interleaved and near-simultaneous measurement of multiple indicators of cochlear function, including the compound action potential (CAP) threshold, amplitude and waveshape at multiple frequencies, the OHC transfer curves derived from low-frequency cochlear microphonic (CM) waveforms, distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), the spectrum of the round-window neural noise (SNN), and the endocochlear potential (EP). ... The mathematical model we have developed provided a physiologically-plausible and internally-consistent explanation for the time-courses of the cochlear changes observed during a number of different perturbations. We show that much of the oscillatory behaviour within the cochlea is consistent with underlying oscillations in cytosolic calcium concentration. We conclude that a number of the discrepancies between the simulation results and the experimental data can be resolved if the cytosolic calcium functions as two distinct pools: one which controls basolateral permeability and one which controls slow motility. This two-calcium-pool model is discussed.

Abstract:

The morphological study of the Odontocete organ of Corti including possible pathological features resulting from sound over-exposure, represent a key conservation issue to assess the effects of acoustic pollution on marine ecosystems. Through the collaboration with stranding networks belonging to 26 countries, 150 ears from 13 species of Odontocetes were processed. In this dissertation, we present a standard protocol to 1) compare the ultrastructure of the cochlea in several Odontocete species and 2) investigate possible damage as a consequence of sound exposure, using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. In a preliminary study, computerized tomography scans were performed before decalcification with ears of 15 odontocete species, proposing a set of standard measurements which classified very well the species. In addition, the constant ratio between measurements of inner and middle ear structures contributed to confirm the active role of the odontocete middle ear in sound reception mechanism. We established a decalcification protocol using the fast commercial decalcifier RDO® and EDTA (Ethylendiaminetetraacetic acid). Although further experiments should be conducted to assess the suitability of using one or the other method (because the number of samples treated with EDTA was comparatively small), RDO® at specific dilutions decreased the decalcification time of cetacean ear bones with control of the decalcification endpoint, helping a faster access to inner structures. The complementary use of electron microscopy and immunofluorescence allowed the description in odontocetes of new morphological features of tectorial membrane, spiral limbus, spiral ligament, stria vascularis, hair cells and their innervation. Furthermore, this study revealed qualitative and quantitative morphological characteristics of the organ of Corti in high-frequency hearing species, including 1) an outer hair cell (OHC) small length, 2) a thick cuticular plate in OHC, and a thick reticular lamina, 3) robust cup formation of the Deiters cell body, 4) the high development of cytoskeleton in Deiters and pillar cells and 5) the basilar membrane high stiffness. Interestingly, all these features, including a common molecular design of prestin, are also shared by echolocating bats, suggesting a convergent evolution in echolocating species. The presence of scars among hair cell rows, the pattern of stereocilia imprints in the tectorial membrane and the condition of fibrocytes II and IV were criteria suitable to determine or discard possible acoustic trauma, despite the numerous artefacts that rapidly develop as a consequence of tissue autolysis. Consequently, matching the preliminary approximation of the cochlear frequency map with the damaged region would bring information on the sound source that would have triggered a possible lesion.

Abstract:

La reducción de las emisiones de C02 es uno de los mayores objetivos de la política climática de la Unión Europea (UE). Uno de los mayores factores de contaminación en Europa es el sector del transporte, especialmente el transporte rodado por carretera, responsable de una proporción sustancial de las emisiones de CO2 debido a la combustión del petróleo. La contribución de este estudio es doble. En primer lugar, se aplica una novedosa metodología desarrollada por Phillips and Sul (2007) con el objetivo de examinar la existencia de clubes de convergencia en emisiones de CO2 por coche entre 13 países de la UE durante el periodo temporal 1991 a 2011. En segundo lugar, se investiga la relación entre tales clubes de convergencia en emisiones y algunas medidas de dieselización, en concreto, el stock de coches diésel sobre el total de la flota y el consumo de diésel sobre el total del combustible. La mayor eficiencia de los vehículos diésel ha generado una política fiscal favorable a este combustible, llevando a un intenso proceso de dieselización en Europa durante las últimas décadas. No obstante, algunos estudios recientes (González and Marrero, 2012; Rodríguez et al., 2015) han cuestionado el éxito de estas políticas como herramientas de reducción de las emisiones de CO2 en el sector de los coches. Abstract:

La utilización del automóvil eléctrico frente al convencional o térmico presenta indudables ventajas desde el punto de vista ambiental. Sin embargo, estas ventajas se ven muy limitadas por los problemas de autonomía que a día de hoy aún sigue presentado el coche eléctrico. Determinadas actividades en flotas de empresas o entidades pueden adaptarse muy bien a la utilización del vehículo eléctrico. Basta pensar que, por ejemplo, en diversos municipios los coches que utilizan para servicios diversos realizan recorridos inferiores a los cien km diarios. Estos recorridos, se llevan a cabo en horarios de mañana o tarde únicamente, y los vehículos se estacionan en lugares fijos (garajes, sitios reservados en el viario, locales, etc... por lo que la recarga puede realizarse por la tarde o, en su caso, por la noche. Uno de los casos de mayor interés para utilizar flotas de coches eminentemente eléctricos son las unidades de hospitalización domiciliaria (UHD) de los hospitales. Estas unidades atienden a pacientes que por diversas circunstancias reciben su tratamiento, con características hospitalarias, en sus domicilios. El hospital de Alcoy está siendo pionero en la puesta en marcha y utilización de vehículos eléctricos para el desplazamiento del personal sanitario de la UHD ya que desde Julio de 2014, y mediante un procedimiento de contratación, utiliza este tipo de vehículos para el servicio. La prestación se realiza a través de una empresa privada seleccionada mediante concurso. La empresa que presta el servicio -MOVUS SL- encargó a la Universitat Politècnica de València la realización de un estudio que validase esta actuación. Dicha validación se realizó atendiendo a la sostenibilidad en su triple faceta: económica, ambiental y social. Abstract:

Este artículo se centra en el desarrollo de una Actividad de Aprendizaje Experiencial a través de un juego de niños. Pretendemos mostrar a los instructores una potente herramienta de motivación y de generación de aprendizaje significativo a partir de una experiencia sencilla que nos puede permitir testar nuevas metodologías docentes más adecuadas a los entornos actuales de la educación. La actividad desarrollada a partir de la simulación de un proceso industrial mediante una pista de coches de juguete, donde pretendemos aprender los aspectos básicos para la aplicación y análisis de gráficos de control. El resultado de las primeras experiencias nos indican un alto impacto en la motivación y en la percepción de aprendizaje de los conceptos más básicos. Por otro lado, de los resultados también se desprende la necesidad del instructor de incidir en los conceptos más complejos de forma más importante durante las fases de ejecución y discusión de la experiencia.

Abstract:

In this research, an uncoiled scale gerbil cochlea is designed and fabricated. The cochlea model is an uncoiled, 16 times scale model of the real gerbil cochlea and has only one duct. Both the basilar membrane width and the duct size vary along the length of the device, in analogy to the physiology. The cochlea duct is filled with silicone oil and driven by a modal exciter (shaker) at different frequencies. The movement of the basilar membrane is measured using laser vibrometry at different locations along the basilar membrane. The ratio of the basilar membrane velocity to drive velocity is computed and plotted. The characteristic frequency of the model varies from 7000 Hz at 2 cm from the base of the cochlea to 350 Hz at the 15 cm from the base. Two different viscosities silicone oil, 20 cSt and 500 cSt are used for the basilar membrane movement measurements. A WKB method is applied to the calculation of the basilar membrane movement of the scale cochlea model, in which the fluid motion is fully three dimensional.

Abstract:

Hearing relies on a series of coupled electrical, acoustical (fluidic) and mechanical interactions inside the cochlea that enable sound processing. The stability of the cochlea is studied using a nonlinear, micromechanical model of the organ of Corti (OoC) coupled to the electrical potentials in the cochlear ducts. The OoC is part of the mammalian cochlea that contains auditory sensory cells that both identify fluid-born vibrations in the cochlea and amplify the cycle-by-cycle motions of the cochlear structures. This process occurs through local resonance of the OoC system. In the mammalian cochlea, an active process accounts for the ear’s exquisite sensitivity and its remarkable responsiveness for a range of frequencies and intensities. Numerical and analytical techniques are utilized to examine the stability of this system. It is observed that the cochlear active process, controls the stability. We show that instability in this model is generated through a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. Furthermore, a reduced order model of the system is approximated and it is shown that the tectorial membrane (TM) transverse mode effect on the dynamics is significant while the radial mode can be simplified from the equations. We compare the cross sectional model with the comprehensive 3-dimensional model of the cochlea. It is indicated that the global model qualitatively inherits some characteristics of the local model, but the longitudinal coupling along the cochlea enhances stability (i.e., shifts the Hopf bifurcation point).

Abstract:

The mammalian cochlea is a sensory system with high sensitivity, sharp frequency selectivity and a broad dynamic range. These characteristics are due to the active nonlinear feedback by outer hair cells. Because it is an active nonlinear system, the cochlea sometimes emits spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) that are generated in the absence of any external stimulus due to the emergence of limit cycle oscillations. In this work, we use a computational physics-based model of the mammalian cochlea to investigate the generation of SOAEs. This model includes a three-dimensional model of the fluid mechanics in the cochlear ducts, a micromechanical model for the vibrations of the cochlear structures, and a realistic model of outer hair cell biophysics. Direct simulations of SOAEs in the time-domain demonstrate that the model is able to capture key experimental observations regarding SOAEs. Parametric studies and analysis of model simulations are used to demonstrate that SOAEs are a global phenomenon that arises due to the collective action of a distributed region of the cochlea rather than from spontaneous oscillations from individual outer hair cells.

The mammalian cochlea is an acoustic spectrum analyzer and pressure transducer with a remarkable operating range, both in frequency and amplitude (Fettiplace & Hackney, 2006). A young healthy human ear can capture sounds of 40 to 20,000 Hz in frequency and 20 μPa to 20 Pa (0 to 120 dB sound pressure level) in amplitude. In research on the cochlea, one of the most significant achievements in decades is the identification of the cochlear amplifier. Tiny acoustic vibrations are amplified in the organ of Corti (OC)—sensori-eptithelium in the cochlea. Mechano-transducer receptors in the OC, called the outer hair cells, have been identified as the cellular actuators that provide energy to boost small pressure waves. However, how the amplification is achieved is still unclear.
