Without objectively measuring the process of innovation, one cannot ensure whether the research and development expenses serve the right benefit. In order to be successful in generating revenue it is imperative for research and development functions to assume a broader view in developing technology for new products. Planning for the right product platform and family should not be limited to only market application for derivative products but also planning for successive generations of product platforms and derivative products. This topic explores a method documented in literature from a variety of industries ranging from power tools to medical devices by using the correct metrics to make the right level of business and product architecture decisions. The method includes defining metrics for Effectiveness, which is a measure of product success in the market place, and Efficiency, a measure of successful utilization of the corporation's product development resources. The utilization of the proposed method was applied to four product families, which include twelve different products over two release cycles in the Diesel Power Systems industry. The metrics were analyzed in combination and further guidance on the usage of metrics was developed. When applied appropriately, the metrics can help product planners and product line architects to manage and assess the right level of technology integration from past and present product platforms. The use of Efficiency and Effectiveness metrics allows business leaders to better assess their product planning strategies on a continuous basis. It also allows for a better understanding of how historical decisions impacted the outcome of past product architecture with clarity. However, having measures in place isn't sufficient, this work explores the need for a better communication and alignment of business process between Research and Engineering and sub-business units to better develop the right technology integration and maturation of future products.

The design and implementation of a lean production system is a complex task requiring an intimate understanding of the fundamental lean principles. Much of the published lean literature is written at a high level of abstraction and contains very basic examples. When lean tools are applied blindly to complex, highly constrained systems, lean implementation becomes challenging and often ineffective. This thesis develops a set of management tools that emphasize the fundamental lean principles and the importance of an overarching value stream level management perspective in an effort to drive appropriate system design decisions and management behavior in such an environment. This thesis proposes the design of a high-mix, low-volume (HMLV) lean production system for implementation at Hamilton Sundstrand, a global supplier of technologically advanced aerospace and industrial products. The system establishes a series of mixed model flow lines based upon the principles of cellular manufacturing. The flow lines operate in a true pull fashion with an optimally sized finished goods supermarket and a strategic, continuous review incoming material ordering policy. In addition, a capacity planning tool, a long term resource cross-training planning tool, and a series of leading metrics and management levers are developed in order to help steer management decisions.

Full textThis paper discusses the design and development of the EUVE Virtual Environment (EVE) system. The EVE system is being developed as an interactive virtual reality (VR) viewing tool for NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite. EVE will serve as a predictive tool for forecasting spacecraft constraint violations and will provide a capability for spacecraft problem analysis and resolution in realtime through visualization of the problem components in the spacecraft. EVE will animate, in three-dimensional realtime, the spacecraft dynamics and thermal characteristics of the EUVE spacecraft. EVE will also display the field of view for the science instrument detectors, star trackers, sun sensors, and both the omni and high-gain antennas for NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and for possible ground station contact. EVE will display other vital spacecraft information to support the routine operations of the EUVE spacecraft. The EVE system will provide three quick-look visualization functions: (1) to model in-orbit data for realtime spacecraft problem analysis and resolution, (2) to playback data for post-pass data analysis, and training exercises, and (3) to simulate data in the science planning process for optimum attitude determination and to predict spacecraft and thermal constraint violations. We present our preliminary design for a telemetry server, providing both realtime and post pass data, that uses standard Unix utilities. We also present possibilities for future integration of the EVE system with other software to automate the science planning and command generation functions of the satellite operations.

Full textThis thesis addresses a series of research activities spanning the different spatial and temporal aspects of energy efficiency, comfort and climate change resilience throughout diverse scales of the built environment. The first macro-topic deals with the design of optimized control logics of specific building components, notably: electric radiators (on-off, PID and fuzzy controllers), windows (indoor air quality and thermal comfort driven adaptive comfort algorithm), sunspaces (smartly controlled mechanical ventilation) and fan coil units (fuzzy and model-predictive logics to counteract overabundant solar gains). The second macro-topic focuses on how climate change phenomena impinge on the energetic and ergonomic performance of buildings and cities. Firstly, the outcomes of the four-month experience in Europe, as a member of the 2015 WISBA edition (Wienerberger Sustainable Building Academy), are presented: the low-tech concept of Building 2226 (Austria) was tested in the frame of the actual climatic conditions and in view of the expected climate change to come in 2050. A re-design strategy was developed to enhance its resilience. Secondly, the results of one of the Urban Heat Island (UHI) mitigation projects run during the last year in collaboration with the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia) are illustrated and discussed: the borderline case of a tropical city (Darwin, Northern Territory) was monitored, analysed, modelled and tackled by developing customized counterbalance measures. Indeed, the overarching aim of the whole research path is to provide and field-test smart, optimized and mitigation-oriented solutions towards more efficient and liveable indoor and outdoor spaces. Special focus was given to the collection of on-site validated data, by planning robust monitoring campaigns and properly selecting the sensor networks.

Full textThe concept of e-service represents one prominent application of utilizing the use of information and communication technologies in different areas. Basically, there are three main components: service provider, service receiver and the channels of service delivery. For example, as concerned to public e-service, public agencies are the service provider and citizens as well as businesses are the service receiver. The channel of service delivery is the third requirement of e-service. Internet is the main channel of e-service delivery while other classic channels are also considered.

Full textThis thesis describes a six-month project based on stroke rehabilitation and involves designing with medical doctors, a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist, prototyping and evaluating with both stroke patients and other users. Our project involves the construction of a rehabilitation exercise system, based on virtual environments (VE) and haptics, designed for stroke patients. Our system uses a commercially available haptic device called the PHANTOM Omni, which has the possibility of being used as a rehabilitation tool to interact with virtual environments. The PHANTOM Omni is used in combination with our own developed software based on the platform H3D API. Our goal is to construct an application which will motivate the stroke patient to start using their arm again.
We give a review of the different aspects of stroke, rehabilitation, VE and haptics and how these have previously been combined. We describe our findings from our literature studies and from informal interviews with medical personnel. From these conclusions we attempt to take the research area further by suggesting and evaluating designs of different games/genres that can be used with the PHANTOM Omni as possible haptic exercises for post-stroke arm rehabilitation. We then present two different implementations to show how haptic games can be constructed. We mainly focus on an application we built, a game, using an iterative design process based on studies conducted during the project, called "The Labyrinth". The game is used to show many of the different aspects that have to be taken into account when designing haptic games for stroke patients. From a study with three stroke patients we have seen that "The Labyrinth" has the potential of being a stimulating, encouraging and fun exercise complement to the traditional rehabilitation. Through the design process and knowledge we acquired during this thesis we have created a set of general design guidelines that we believe can help in the future software development of haptic games for post-stroke arm rehabilitation.

Full textA multi-threaded, multi-agent image recognition software application called RecMaster has been developed specifically for the purpose of quality control in a production environment. This entails using the system as a monitor to identify invalid objects moving on a conveyor belt and to pass on the relevant information to an attached device, such as a robotic arm, which will remove the invalid object. The main purpose of developing this system was to prove that a desktop computer could run an image recognition system efficiently, without the need for high-end, high-cost, specialised computer hardware. The programme operates by assigning each agent a task in the recognition process and then waiting for resources to become available. Tasks related to edge detection, colour inversion, image binarisation and perimeter determination were assigned to individual agents. Each agent is loaded onto its own processing thread, with some of the agents delegating their subtasks to other processing threads. This enables the application to utilise the available system resources more efficiently. The application is very limited in its scope, as it requires a uniform image background as well as little to no variance in camera zoom levels and object to lens distance. This study focused solely on the development of the application software, and not on the setting up of the actual imaging hardware. The imaging device, on which the system was tested, was a web cam capable of a 640 x 480 resolution. As such, all image capture and processing was done on images with a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels and a vertical resolution of 480 pixels, so as not to distort image quality. The application locates objects on an image feed - which can be in the format of a still image, a video file or a camera feed - and compares these objects to a model of the object that was created previously. The coordinates of the object are calculated and translated into coordinates on the conveyor system. These coordinates are then passed on to an external recipient, such as a robotic arm, via a serial link. The system has been applied to the model of a DVD, and tested against a variety of similar and dissimilar objects to determine its accuracy. The tests were run on both an AMD- and Intel-based desktop computer system, with the results indicating that both systems are capable of efficiently running the application. On average, the AMD-based system tended to be 81% faster at matching objects in still images, and 100% faster at matching objects in moving images. The system made matches within an average time frame of 250 ms, making the process fast enough to be used on an actual conveyor system. On still images, the results showed an 87% success rate for the AMD-based system, and 73% for Intel. For moving images, however, both systems showed a 100% success rate.
