Abstract:
Cocoa is one of the leading commodities from the plantation sub-sector in Indonesia. At the world level, Indonesia is the third-largest producer of cocoa beans after Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana (FAO, 2017). However, Indonesia still exports cocoa in the form of (raw) beans which results in the loss of added value and not developing the domestic cocoa industry. For this reason, the government issued No. 67/PMK.011/ 2010 concerning the imposition of Export Levy and Export Levy Tariffs to suppress the export of cocoa beans and then increase the competitiveness of processed cocoa exports. This paper is a theoretical and empirical investigation into the impact of the structural adjustment program (SAP) on forest loss in Ghana between the period 1965–95. An optimal control model is used to derive estimable reduced form equations for forest loss, cocoa land, maize land and timber production, which are in turn functions of mainly input and output prices. Piecewise linear and switching regression approaches are used to distinguish between the influence of the post from the pre-adjustment policy impacts on forest land use. The overall results show that cocoa land expansion and timber

A cointegration and error correction modeling approach is employed. The empirical results show that labor mobility from the agricultural to the non-agricultural sector exerts negative effects on deforestation in Ghana in the long run and short run. Relative agricultural income exerts a significant negative effect on intersectoral labor mobility in the long run. Deforestation is influenced positively by

Popular expectations for more public infrastructure services (i.e., hospitals, schools, roads) run high in Ghana because of recently discovered major oil and gas reserves in its’ offshore deposits. However, Ghana doesn’t have a good track record of using natural resource revenues, be it gold or cocoa, efficiently and effectively for development. The hard fact is that despite significant gold and cocoa revenues, the country has always experienced chronic infrastructure “deficit.” It is unclear if the surge in oil revenues did translate into better development outcomes, whereas the sharp drop in

Results indicate that the net present value (NPV) of organic production under current market conditions is 21% lower than the NPV of conventional production.
