In particular, we apply the Nash-Moser inverse function theorem to give sufficient conditions for the action of a simply connected Lie group to be locally rigid. In a 1993 preprint Guyan Robertson proved that every uniformly bounded representation of a discrete group on a finite von Neumann algebra is similar to a unitary representation. We have since discovered that this result was first proved in a paper of Vasilescu and Zsido, published in 1974 (VZ). In this thesis we examine the class of cocyclic subshifts. First, we give a method of modeling the zeros of Diophantine equations in the multiplication of matrices. This yields many examples, and a proof that there is no algorithm than can decide if two cocyclic subshifts are equal. Next, we use the theory of finite dimensional algebras to give an algebraic technique for finding connecting orbits between topologically transitive components of a given cocyclic subshift. We study the cut and projection method, which is a way to construct tilings. This construction leads to a minimal Zd -action on the Cantor set. In this thesis, we will focus our attention on two examples that we will describe in full details. the Fibonacci tiling on R and the octogonal tiling on R2 . For the octogonal tiling, we find small strictly positive cocycles for the minimal action on specific cones of Z2 .
