The persistence of both inflammatory and neuropathic pain can only be explained when learning processes are taken into account in addition to sensitizing mechanisms. Learning processes such as classical and operant conditioning create memories for pain that are based on altered synaptic connections in supraspinal structures and persist without peripheral input. Hyperalgesia can arise from peripheral sensitization, on-going peripheral activation, and central plasticity. In the target article, coderre & katz argue that all three mechanisms contribute to hyperalgesia. In contrast, we believe that existing experimental evidence suggests that central plasticity plays only an insignificant role in most experimental models and clinical presentations of hyperalgesia induced by tissue injury or chemical activation of sensory receptors.

Abstract:
In patients with pain characterized by a painful focus and allodynia, the painful symptoms arise from altered central processing that is initiated and subsequently maintained by persistent input from nociceptive afferents. Treatments directed at this normal consequence of persistent input are inherently limited. The most efficacious treatments will target the pathology, the various sources of ongoing nociceptor input. Recent pain research has concentrated heavily on excitatory processes. However, noxious stimuli activate excitatory and inhibitory systems. Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recently the field of video, image and audio processing has experienced several significant progresses on both the algorithms and the architectures levels. One of these evolutions is the emergence of the new ISO/IEC JPEG2000 image compression standard which succeeds to JPEG. This new standard presents many functionalities and features which allows it to be adapted to a large spectrum of applications. However, these features bring up new algorithmic complexities of higher degree than those of JPEG which in turn makes it very difficult to be optimized for certain implementations under very hard constraints. Those constraints could be area, timing or power constraints or more likely all of them. One of the key steps during the JPEG2000 processing is entropy coding that takes about 70 % of the total execution time when compressing an image. It is therefore essential to analyze the potentialities of optimizations of implementations of JPEG2000. FPGA devices are currently the main reconfigurable circuits available on the market. Although they have been used for a long time only for ASIC prototyping, they are able today to provide an effective solution to the hardware implementation of applications in many fields. Considering the progress experienced by the FPGA semiconductor industry on integration capacity and working frequency, reconfigurable architectures are now an effective and competitive solution to meet the needs of both prototyping and final hardware implementations. In this work we propose a methodology for the study of the possibilities of implementation of JPEG2000. This study starts with the evaluation of software implementations on commercial platforms

Abstract:
This thesis dissertation deals with the construction detailing of the work of J.A.Coderch. Coderch placed a special emphasis on its definition, and even though he never abandoned the traditional roots on which he based his architecture, he transformed the traditional approach to detailing in a way that had a very strong impact on the image of his buildings. Construction detailing is an important part of the design project, whose objectives share, and end up becoming the physical expression of the goals it pursues. Two parallel lines have conducted this thesis: one, an analysis of a number of buildings, from the beginning of their placement on the site to their eventual construction finishing and detailing, and the other, a study of the architectural context in which Coderch lived in his beginnings, in order to find the references which most influenced him; it is in that context where we find the bases of his personal career. Through the analysis of the design process of his buildings, it has been observed that Coderch starts a project from the placement on the site, develops his proposal moulding the interior space, and finishes it with the detailing, in which he strongly relies on the overall unity of the final result. He emphasizes a special detail of the facade, by repeating it throughout the whole building, as a solution to avoid any exceptions that may flourish from a design that, because it is conducted from interior space, keeps the outside appearance flexible throughout the process. In the years that Coderch was at the School of Architecture in Barcelona, the GATEPAC led the expansion of modern architecture in Spain, and highlighted the presence of modern values in traditional Mediterranean architecture. Early in his professional career, Coderch shared this concern to relate traditional and modern architecture and to get actively involved in national and international movements. Coderch approached modern architecture –once the orthodoxy of it was over– and got closer to F.Ll.Wright’s premises of organic architecture, where traditional and advanced means were living together. The plasticity was claimed by Wright as continuity, and this led him to change his perception of space and its construction detailing. In Coderch architecture, the construction elements disappear within a continuous solution, in which they are very difficult to understand when isolated from the whole creation. They all undertake a role in the definition of a sense of space, an important reason which makes all the architectural elements work together, overcoming the individual role of a wall, a roof, a door or a window. Given that architecture pursuits the goal of constructing a place, the perception of that specific place through the enclosure and its limits is where the architect shows his or her individual form of making architecture, and where detailing plays an essential role. Coderch focuses on the interior-exterior relationship, and therefore it is mainly through windows where one may see the specific concept of a place. The way he opens a window on the wall, and establishes the limits between the interior and outside, is linked to the Mediterranean tradition, (very much related to references from his years as a student), and it is sought in all his projects.

Abstract:
As modern communications networks are heterogeneous and, therefore, highly variable, the design of source coders should reflect this network variability. It is desired that source coders are able to adapt instantly to any bit-rate constraint. Source coders that possess this property offer coding flexibility that facilitates optimal utilization of the available communication channel within a heterogeneous network. Flexible coders are able to utilize feedback information and therefore perform an instant re-optimization. This property implies that flexible audio coders are better suited for networks with high variability due to the fact a single configuration of the flexible coder can operate at continuum of bit-rates. The aim of the thesis is to implement a flexible audio coder in a real-time demonstrator (VoIP application) that facilitates instant re-optimization of the flexible coding scheme. The demonstrator provides real-time full-duplex communications over a packet network and the operating bit-rate may be adjusted on the fly. The coding performance of the flexible audio coding scheme should remain comparable to non-flexible schemes optimized at their operating bitrates. The report provides a background for the thesis work and describes the real-time implementation of the demonstrator. Finally, test results are provided. The coder is evaluated by means of a subjective MUSHRA test. The performance of the flexible audio coder is compared to relevant state-of-the-art codecs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis approaches the study of seaside hotels as imagined by Jose Antonio Coderch at the beginning of mass tourism in Spain, when small, traditional, family-run hotels scattered along the coastline were transformed into large, tourist hotel chains. These chained-brand hotels popped up exponentially after the implementation of a financial stabilization plan in 1959, remodelling the Mediterranean landscape, and theywere socially rejected, including the only hotel Coderch ever built: Hotel de Mar. The architect said "I always thought this hotel was not worlhy [...], it's my worst work", showing his dissatisfaction. However, this hotel is one of his best-known works, an essential reference in hotel architecture literature. Hotel de Mar shows his evolution as an architect, from previous unknown projects in Sitges to his most successful work, Torre Valentina. When analyzing his projects, based on rethinking previous works by himself or by other architects, we realize that Coderch repeatedly shows some concerns, which are reflected in his architectural proposals and are sketched in his hotel conception. The existing literature about Torre Valentina and Hotel de Mar deal with these two works separately, as independent projects, whereas this thesis is based on the idea that both works are fruit of the same hotel conception, following Coderch's ideals but adapted to the owner's dream hotel (as it is the case of Hotel Buadas, later on renamed Hotel de Mar). Both projects were developed in the same period of time (from 1956 to 1962), on the same landscape (the Catalan coast and the Balearic coast), for the same target clients (first-class hotels) and under the same laws (an incipient, lax tourist and urban legislation). Therefore, Coderch's proposals respond to the same problems -the only differences between the two projects are the plot of land and the owner's requirements .Coderch's iconic step-like buildings featuring setbacks become a malleable calligraphy seen in his subsequent works .His hotel designs rewal a recurring concern to treat guests as individuals and hosts as a collectivity. These concerns are present in his seaside hotels ,which differ from the classic tourist hotels like Hilton lnternational hotels built during the 1950s -consumer goods made in America which colonised the Caribbean, the Mediterranean shores and even the published literature to the point that they became a reference for developers during Spanish developmentalism under Franco's dictatorship. With the aim of highlighting Coderch's unique models, his hotel buildings are chronologically analysed and compared with other hotels built by different architects, including Gio Ponti Bernard Rudofsky, Josep Lluis Sert, Alejandro de la Sota, Richard Neutra, Georges Candilis, Luis Gutiérrez Soto and Fernando Higueras. Coderch's works are compared to hotels with different locations and different construction years, which present a different approach to Coderch's concerns. Torre Valentina and Hotel de Mar became model buildings for would-be architects who later on built hotels during the "sun and sand" tourism boom. This thesis aims at sketching the concept of seaside hotels as designed by Coderch.

Abstract:
Fabrication of fully integrated capillary electrophoresis (CE)-based microfluidic device with integrated carbon sensing electrode is described in this paper. A combination of microfabrication protocols were employed for fabricating the hybrid PDMS/glass microfluidic device including chemical wet etching, soft lithography, and micromolding techniques. The microdevice is comprised of glass substrate with integrated gold electrodes and carbon sensing electrode, and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) slab that encompasses the microchannels network. The carbon sensing electrode was physically characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Raman spectrometry. In addition, its quality was evaluated electrochemically and compared to commercial glassy carbon electrodes upon performing cyclic voltammetric analysis of two illicit drugs, morphine and codeine. The analytical performance of the stand-alone microdevice was evaluated upon testing the injection, separation and amperometric detection on the carbon sensing electrode. The carbon sensing electrode provides stable background current during applying high sensing potential, which is of particular necessity for sensing molecules that can be only detected at high potentials including morphine and codeine.
