Full textThe work done in this study focuses on forward error correction used to compensate for performance degradations in fiber optical links, mainly corrupted by the quadratic photo detection process. When we consider a single user transmission, this process has an impact on the photo detected signal statistic, which can be represented as a chi-square function. Taking into account this statistic, the iterative decoding used for LDPC codes is modified in order to optimise the performance. In the case including Optical Code Division Multiple Access, mainly disrupted by Multiple Access Interference, photo detection induces beatings called beat noise. Studying the photo detected signal statistic leads us to establish a theoretical model based on a mixture of chi-square distribution. The error correction performance has been optimised by taking into account this model in the decoding process, which permits considering an application to multimedia transmissions

Full textThe displacement measurement technology of diffractive interferometry has been developed in the objective of miniaturization. This work encompasses the manufacturing technologies of the grating scale and the submicron period readout grating, the design and MPW fabrication of a dedicated Opto-ASIC. The interference principle has been implemented in the form of a miniature read head prototype according to a novel device configuration after an exhaustive discussion on the fabrication and mouting tolerances has been made. The prototype is now ready for use in an electro-mechanical system. The system has been used as a high resolution characterization tool for the testin of the spatial coherence of long grating scales

Full textThis thesis deals with the performance of channel coding for wireless optical communications in an indoor environment in the context of mobile patient monitoring. After presenting the optical channel characteristics of LOS and diffuse links, error correcting codes and erasure correcting codes are introduced as a way to achieve reliable transmissions over the non stationary optical channel. The performance of Reed Solomon codes and LDPC codes is then determined and compared to the outage probability of the optical channel. The results show that the performance of LDPC codes increases with the code rate at the expense of an higher outage probability which is a typical parameter for the higher layers. The performance of erasure correcting codes (LT codes) is then studied in terms of achievable rate and compared to the performance of hybrid ARQ and outage capacity. The study shows that LT codes can increase the achievable rate and reduce the optical emitted power which is important for healthcare applications, embedded on the patient

Full textDigital communication systems are everywhere in our daily life. The evolution of needs implies the research and development of innovative solutions for future communication systems. Considering space digital communications, most satellites use radiofrequency links to communicate with the Earth. To minimize bandwith usage and increase throughputs, digital communication technologies based on optical links represent an interesting alternative. However, luminous energy is absorbed by particules that are present in the Earth's atmosphere. These perturbations implies new issues and new coding schemes must be developed to cope with them.LDPC codes are an error correction code family. Their performance near Shannon's limit makes them an attractive solution for digital communication systems. They have been selected in Wifi and 5G standards to achieve very high throughputs (several Gbps). They were also adopted in CSSDS and DVB-S2 standards for space applications. This thesis is about the study and the hardware implementation of coding schemes applied on optical links for space digital communication systems. The first contribution is the study of a coding scheme for an optical downlink with a soft input decoder on Earth. In this study, we developed a hardware architecture capable of implementing the decoding process on FPGA. The designed decoder reaches the expected throughput of 10 Gbps. A second contribution is about the optical uplink that implies hard input decoding in a satellite. Resulting constraints led us to rethink extended Gallager B algorithm. It made possible the develoment of a new architecture that manages the hard input decoding process efficiently while being compliant with space constraints, such as hardware complexity, heat dissipation and throughput (10 Gbps)
