Abstract:
The pharmacopeia of Pedanius Dioscorides (20-70 ce), entitled Peri Ylis Ialikis (latinized as De Materia Medica, On Medical Matters)was written in Greek about the year 65. It was destined to be one of the most famous books on pharmacology and medicine but is also richin horticulture and plant ecology. An illustrated alphabetical version of Dioscorides’ manuscript was completed in Constantinople about 512. This magnificent volume was prepared and presented to the imperial Princess Juliana Anicia (462-527), daughter of the Emperor Anicius Olybrius, Emperor of the Western Roman Empire. The bound manuscript stored in Ōsterreichische National bibliothek in Vienna is available in facsimile and is now referred to as the Juliana Anicia Codex (JAC) or the Codex Vindobonensis Dioscorides. The JAC contains 383 paintings of plants including many horticultural crops, many of which can still be recognized in modern day examples. Ananalys is of the illustrations indicates that they were made by numerous artists of varying skills and it is probable that some were derived from an earlier lost version. The Codex Neapolitanus (NAP) (late 6th or early 7th century) which now contains 406 plant images on 172folios resides in the Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples is closely related to JAC, and is also available in facsimile editions. A comparison ofthe 352 common illustrations contained in both NAP and JAC suggests that many of the illustrations derived from a common source,perhaps an illustrated collection owned by Theodosius II, but the possibility also exists that some of the NAP images are direct copies of JAC images. There are 31 images in JAC which do not appear in NAP, 1 is a 13th century addition, 4 are images that can be assigned to2 torn pages. and 26 can be assigned to 11 missing leaves of the NAP. Of the 54 images in NAP which do not appear in JAC, 2 are likely to have been Mandragora included in lost folios in JAC, but the other 52 may include other images that existed in the common source. While common images in NAP and JAC are often very similar, 11.6% show substantially differences including variants of the same plant in different stages. Additional images in the archetypic source including different stages of the same plant could have provided the copyists working on JAC and NAP the opportunity to select different images to fulfill their commissions.

NB: Artiklen er på dansk, kun resuméet er på engelsk. Jesper Nielsen: Worm’s Mexican hieroglyphs. About a copy of a Mixtec manuscript in The Royal Library. Among The Royal Library’s collection of manuscripts is a piece (NKS 2064 fol.) titled Hieroglyphica Mexicana quae in sui Recordationem Reliquit J. Ludolphus. The piece is a handwritten copy of a small part of the pre-Columbian Mixtec screen-fold book known as Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus 1. Firstly, this article provides an account of the copy’s genesis and its historic value and research value, subsequently, it de­scribes the historic and genealogic information contained in the copy. Hieroglyphica Mexicana is derived from Ole Worm’s (1588-1654) famous natural and cultural histori­cal collection, but was originally exported by the German orientalist Hiob Ludolph (1624-1704) while visiting Duke William of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach in 1650, who had the codex in his cabinet. In 1651, Ludolph gave Ole Worm the copy while visiting Copenhagen. The copy is a drawing of the backside of Codex Vindobonensis, which tells about the Mixtec city of Tilantongos (Oaxaca, Mexico), three dynasties and covers the period from the 900s and up to the mid-1400s. The part which Ludolph chose to copy originated from the lower part of page XII of the codex and is about the second dynasty in the mid-1300s, including the marriage of ♀ 3 Rabbit, Spiderweb Stone and ♂ 9 House, Mexican Jaguar from the neighbouring state Teozacualco in the year 5 Reed (1355 A.D.) Ludolph’s original copy is far more precise than the print, which was published in Museum Wormanium, the catalogue on Worm’s collection, in 1655, and which has often been depicted when referring to Ludolph’s copy. In relation to our understanding of the original Codex Vindobonensis, it is possible that the copy shows details which have disappeared from the original since 1650.

Antecedentes: En México, antes de la llegada de los españoles en el siglo XVI, los hongos tenían una importancia ceremonial y sagrada de gran relevancia, lo cual está sustentado en evidencias lingüísticas y arqueológicas, y documentado en códices prehispánicos y escritos coloniales.Objetivos: Describir una historia fascinante y, paradójicamente poco conocida, vinculada a la concepción de la primera aparición del sol y su relación con los hongos enteogénos según el Códice mixteco “Yuta Tnoho” o “Vindobonensis Mexicanus I”, producido en el siglo XVI.Métodos: Se realizó una exhaustiva revisión bibliográfica de las publicaciones relacionadas con el Códice estudiado en diversas bases de datos digitales de la Universidad de Sheffield, la British Library ambas en Inglaterra y el Colegio de Postgraduados de México.Resultados y conclusiones: Se presenta una interpretación detallada de los pictogramas que registran el uso de hongos enteógenos desde una perspectiva ritual y sagrada para los grupos Mixtecos en épocas prehispánicas previas al nacimiento del primer sol. Esta evidencia constituye una pieza única de la importancia cultural y ceremonial de los hongos en Mesoamérica, la cual pervive actualmente en el sureste de México en grupos cercanos geográficamente a los mixtecos.
