This study compared men with and without a history of coercive sexual behavior on their judgments of how far a man should go in using coercion in an audiotaped date rape simulation. Calloused sexual beliefs (CSB) and a “token resistance” manipulation were expected to differentially interact with coercion history. Results showed no effect for “token resistance.” Calloused sexual beliefs interacted with coercion group, such that sexually coercive men high in CSB took significantly longer to stop the date rape interaction than coercive men low in CSB, who did not differ from noncoercive men. I utilize primary evidence of two Indonesian gangs to inform a model of protection gangs under varying states of political development. Modeling gangs as territorial firms under different regulatory conditions, I attribute their number and political affiliation to the interaction between state capacity and political fragmentation. In weak states, gangs will lack political affiliations and their number will be determined by the scalability of their coercive capacities. In countries where st

The authors employ a simulated market channel to investigate two properties of interdependence—magnitude and relative asymmetry. Increasing magnitudes of joint dependence are associated with more frequent use of noncoercive strategies, less frequent use of coercive strategies, lower residual conflict, and more favorable evaluations of partner performance. These results support the relational exchange paradigm. Findings for relative asymmetry were not anticipated but are informative. First, an increasing power advantage did not result in the predicted greater use of threats and punishments, alt

We propose and test a model of food policy acceptability. The model is structured in four levels: government, topic, policy, and individual. In this study, we focus on two levels that are actionable for policy-makers: the topic and policy levels. We assess nine factors using a first online survey with 600 UK nationals and replicate our results in a second survey with 588 participants. Our results suggest that three factors have a positive effect on acceptability at the topic level: awareness of the issue, the legitimacy of state intervention, and social norms. Attrition is a serious problem in many clinical trials. The practice of offering completion bonuses—financial incentives offered to participants on the condition that they remain in a trial until they reach a prespecified study endpoint—is one means of addressing attrition. Despite their practical appeal, however, completion bonuses remain ethically controversial due to concern that they will coerce or unduly influence participants to not exercise their right to withdraw from a trial. Although this interaction with the right to withdraw does render completion bonuses conceptually distinct from

It examines how agreements are achieved in the area of trade and telecommunications, particularly within the aegis of the Geneva-based World Trade Organization (WTO). It argues that, in the negotiations examined, the interplay between unilateral action, bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral processes and the ensuing alchemy of coercion and concord led to an overall reframing of the central problem and thereby facilitated multilateral consensus. Analytical and numerical methods are used to study the process of motion of domain walls in an individual nanowire consisting of ferromagnetic crystallites with a chaotic crystallographic anisotropy. The influence of magnetostatic interaction on the motion is considered. The force profile of the domain wall pinning, caused by stochastic crystallographic anisotropy, is examined. The magnetization curve is analytically constructed and the coercive force is calculated. The Barkhausen jumps of domain walls are investigated. The result is verified by numerically modeling.

Ritualization is the oft-assumed pathway for the evolution of plant–microbe communication systems. In this process, chemical signals, which benefit both receiver and sender, evolve from chemical cues, which benefit only the receiver. However, plant–microbe signaling may evolve from coercive interactions as well, a process known as sensory manipulation. Nonlocal gradient operators are prototypical nonlocal differential operators that are very important in the studies of nonlocal models. One of the simplest variational settings for such studies is the nonlocal Dirichlet energies wherein the energy densities are quadratic in the nonlocal gradients. There have been earlier studies to illuminate the link between the coercivity of the Dirichlet energies and the interaction strengths of radially symmetric kernels that constitute nonlocal gradient operators in the form of integral operators.
