Abstract:
Congenital hypothyroidism may be associated with hearing loss. However, the prevalence of thyroid abnormalities in children with severe hearing loss is not clearly evaluated. The authors assessed the thyroid function in 30 children with profound sensorineural bilateral hearing loss, with cochlear implant, to determine if there is any association between congenital hearing loss and hypothyroidism. Serum levels of TSH and free thyroxine were normal in the study group. None had Pendred syndrome. We present a literature review on the association between hearing loss and thyroid abnormalities and t

Abstract:
Cochlear implant (CI) is a medical procedure originally developed in the United States. In Romania, it is part of the national programme for the treatment of deafness with implantable hearing aids managed by the National Health Insurance House. Successful implantation transforms the child with hearing loss into a hearing but not a speaking child. Only with systematic support and guidance will the child become a speaker. It is risky to assume that the development of the child with CI follows the same milestones and has to overcome the same challenges as the typical child. In fact, successful in

Abstract:
The training of the ability to develop and use language represents a big challenge in the rehabilitation process of children with cochlear implants. Listening and the practice of hearing represents an important part of the process, while the steps in the process of language acquisition and development need to be carefully planned, in an individualized manner. The role of the parents is central in the speech therapy of young children with cochlear implants. Families experience a high degree of distress and burden, but many of them become stronger and more resilient following the process of reha

AbstractThe surgical aspects of 34 Clarion® cochlear implants, positioned during a five-year period on 31 profoundly-deaf subjects as primary (11 children, 20 adults) and revision surgery (one child, three adults) were taken into consideration. Intra-and post-operative complications related to the specific structure of this device were considered along with the benefits obtained by update of the hardware and surgical approach.
