Abstract:

This paper explored the role of cohousing model in the UK and discussed the benefits and limitations of cohousing model by exploring cohousing residents’ motivation and daily living. Through case studies in the UK, semi-structured interviews were carried out to establish the environmental and social sustainability in cohousing and understand residents thinking and behaviour. This study found that cohousing can benefit various age groups, and promote residents’ thinking and behaviour change towards sustainable living. The study also found that the financial limitation and new members recruitment are the top two difficulties in cohousing development. The findings of this research will establish a better understanding of UK cohousing and highlight the potentials and possibilities of cohousing communities.

Abstract:

Older people’s cohousing enables individuals to share spaces, resources, activities, and knowledge to expand their capability to act in society. Despite the diverse social, economic, and ethical aims that inform the creation of every cohousing community, there is often a disconnect between the social discourse developed by cohousing groups and the architectural spaces they create. This is a consequence of the building development process in cohousing, in which groups of older people are tasked with making decisions with considerable spatial implications prior to any collaboration with an architect. The concept of “spatial agency” offers an alternative model for the creation of cohousing, in which the expansion of architectural practice beyond aesthetic and technical building design enables social and spatial considerations to be explored contemporaneously. This study uses a two-year design-research collaboration with a cohousing group in Manchester, UK, to test the opportunities and constraints posed by a “spatial agency” approach to cohousing. The collaboration demonstrated how spatial agency enables both the architect and cohouser to act more creatively through a mutual sharing of knowledge, and, in doing so, tests new opportunities of sharing that are currently outside the cohousing orthodoxy.

Abstract:

Cohousing is a new collaborative housing concept to foster closer social bonding and sustainable communities. This paper discusses the key principles, priorities, and challenges of Cohousing design through interviews with four architects and four Cohousing community residents. The interviews were carried out 1) to demonstrate the application of the design standards, 2) to understand residents’ thinking and behaviour change, and 3) to establish the environmental and social sustainability in a cohousing setting. Abstract:

A cohousing community is created and managed by its residents. It is a new collaborative housing concept designed to foster meaningful relationships, closer social bonding and energy efficiency concepts. This paper aims to discuss the key principles, priorities and challenges of cohousing design process through interviews with four cohousing project architects and four members of the design group. Semi-structured interviews were carried out i) to understand residents’ thinking and behaviour change through living in the cohousing community, and ii) to establish the environmental and social sustainability in a cohousing setting. The study found that the development procedure of cohousing highly differs from the mainstream housing design. The quality of the design can potentially influence the residents’ daily life. The findings will benefit a range of groups. It will be an important reference for cohousing design standards. Abstract:

This paper aims to propose an integrated theoretical model with which to identify the personal characteristics, behaviors, and competencies of individuals who have successfully seen a senior cohousing project through to the residential stability phase. Numerous early-stage senior cohousing projects are registered each year. However, only a few of them are actually built, and when they are, the construction process takes an average of 10 years. Would-be cohousing residents have to put their tenacity and other competencies to the test to overcome the obstacles in their path before their residential complex is completed. The model proposed here analyzes senior cohousing initiatives as entrepreneurial undertakings. To this end, it draws upon a comprehensive review of the literature on entrepreneurship to identify the personal characteristics, behaviors, and competencies typical of entrepreneurs. In this model, participants in senior cohousing projects make use of these entrepreneurial competencies to help them overcome the obstacles to completing their housing development. However, for the would-be cohousing residents, the objective is not simply to build the residential complex but to enjoy the satisfaction and well-being this housing typology offers. Here, too, we find their entrepreneurial competencies can play a role.

Abstract:

This paper presents a research-through-design project to develop and interpret speculative smart home technologies for cohousing communities—Cohousing IoT. Fieldwork at multiple sites coupled to a constructive design research process led to three prototypes designed for cohousing communities: Cohousing Radio, Physical RSVP, and Participation Scales. These were brought back to the communities that inspired them as a form of evaluation, but also to generate new understandings of designing for cohousing. In discussing how they understand these prototypes, this paper offers an account of how research though design generates knowledge that is specific to the conditions and issues that matter to communities. This contributes to design research more broadly in two ways. First, it demonstrates how contemporary ideas of smart home technology are or could be made relevant to broader ways of living in the future. Second, it provides an example of how a design research process can serve to uncover community values, issues, and goals.

In this article, we explore how different kinds and varying degrees of co-creation have shaped cohousing in Denmark over the past half century. The first part of the article is concerned with how this is related to types of ownership and ways of establishing new communities; the second part to the role of the architect, arguing for more experimental and open processes; and the third part to resident mix and community life, which raises questions of diversity and the unfinished. The article concludes with a discussion of how the accumulated experiences may contribute to strengthening a sense of belonging and community in future cohousing during the processes of both construction and habitation.

Abstract:

Cohousing communities are characterized by an increased amount of exchanges in social support. Since this circumstance could be attributed to certain characteristics of their inhabitants, the aim of this study was the evaluation of personality traits and trait emotional intelligence. To this purpose, a group difference study was performed in Germany between a sample of residents in cohousing communities (n = 180) and inhabitants of common neighborhoods (n = 104). Significant differences were found that support the idea that residents of cohousing communities have higher levels of well-being and minor levels of detachment and psychoticism, as well as a lower overall score for maladaptive personality traits. We have concluded that further research is needed to examine the possible causal relationships between these findings, and to verify whether living in a cohousing community can operate as a moderator of these traits or if their inhabitants had already bore them before moving into such communities.

RESUMENEl objetivo de este trabajo es reflexionar sobre la situación actual de las personas mayores para eliminar la visión de la vejez, aún presente en el imaginario social, según la cual, se considera al adulto mayor como sinónimo de ser inactivo, dependiente y vulnerable. Consideramos que es necesario hacer valer un nuevo modelo de gestión del envejecimiento en el que los adultos mayores sean reconocidos como un recurso humano esencial de participación y colaboración en los acontecimientos que ocurren en la sociedad. Por ello, para facilitar el camino de intervención en el sentido señalado, se presentan experiencias de “otro envejecer” que funcionan como alternativas a los modelos tradicionales a la hora de imaginar las trayectorias vitales en la última etapa de su vida. Estamos hablando del cohousing o “viviendas colaborativas” específicamente, del senior cohousing, que tanto en el contexto internacional como nacional se considera una opción residencial óptima y que en los últimos años están cobrando notoriedad en los medios de comunicación social y en el ámbito académico. In order to promote an intervention according to the aforementioned sense, some alternative aging experiences focused on this last stage of life will be explored. There are several options which are gaining notoriety in social media and academia: cohousing, collaborative housing, senior cohousing are only some examples considered as optimal residential options. These modalities of convivence offer the possibility of enjoying private and community life, emphasize the need to improve elderly people living conditions (autonomy, mutual help,communication, social participation, self-determination, etc.) and constitute a sustainable model of active aging.Keywords: active aging, cohousing, senior cohousing, aging models, social participation.

Abstract:

The aim of this article is to analyse cohousing in the context of Ray Oldenburg’s theory of a third place. The author argues that cohousing, which promotes the idea of deep social relations in connection with respect for individualism and sustainable consumption and prosumption, can be viewed as a new form of socialization similar to Oldenburg’s concept of the third place. The first part outlines ideas underlying the concept of a third place, while the second part focuses on the assumptions of cohousing and demand conditions for its development. This theoretical article continues the author’s considerations about the concept of third places in the era of globalization.

Estos hechos han convertido al cohousing senior en una atractiva alternativa de alojamiento para ellos. El avance del cohousing senior supone un empuje hacia la modernización de los alojamientos y servicios sociales para las personas mayores, en particular de las residencias. El cohousing senior lleva varios años de experiencia en otros países europeos, y representa una forma de convivir deseable entre los mayores y/o las familias que desean compañía y compartir tareas. Para conocer mejor la posible evolución futura del cohousing senior se introducen algunos apuntes del desarrollo de estos alojamientos en Suecia, un país modelo y guía en materia de políticas de viviendas y cuidados para personas mayores. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el crecimiento de los alojamientos colaborativos para personas mayores en España desde la economía social, y conocer los problemas encontrados en su implementación, y las soluciones e impulsos políticos a su desarrollo. Hemos revisado la literatura española e internacional sobre cohousing senior durante la última década, y buscado datos en España sobre estos alojamientos en la prensa local y nacional y en la base de datos del proyecto MOVICOMA para determinar su grado de implantación y características. También se consultaron los barómetros de UDP sobre cohousing. Y hemos encontrado que su funcionamiento en Españaes incipiente, y que existen pocas iniciativas consolidadas, aunque bastantes en marcha, y se comprueba que la economía social juega un papel primordial. El Covid-19 ha elevado la demanda de estos alojamientos y alternativas de cuidado porque promueven y facilitan contactos sociales, evitan riesgos de las residencias, y mantienen a los participantes activos. Pero su implementación es lenta porque cuentan con importantes limitaciones a nivel de diseño, localización, financiación, burocracia excesiva y escaso apoyo público. Últimamente, a nivel político hay un mayor interés por estos alojamientos. Los planes de recuperación del Gobierno de España y algunas regulaciones de las CCAA y Ayuntamientos incorporan estrategias específicas sobre viviendas, otras para la Economía Social y cooperativas, y para el cuidado de los mayores (SAAD) que afectan directa o indirectamente al cohousing senior.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to compare a sample of residents in cohousing communities (n = 180) and inhabitants in traditional neighborhoods (n = 104). During the social isolation that was decreed by the German government due to the COVID-19 pandemic, data collection was carried out through the Internet. Psychological symptoms and coping strategies were measured, and their differences were investigated by multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Results showed that residents in cohousing communities have lower levels of depressive, anxiety, compulsive and eating disorders, as well as less use of coping strategies which are based on emotional concealment, problem avoidance, and social withdrawal. Moreover, its inhabitants showed higher levels in the use of social support. It is concluded that living in a cohousing community favors, in comparison with life in traditional neighborhoods, the mental health of its inhabitants.

Abstract:

Purpose Multi-generation cohousing projects are loaded with the expectations of inhabitants and planners, as well as political representatives. They are expected to foster a form of neighborly assistance, which is supposed to ultimately unburden social security. But evidence is scarce when it comes to central aspects like long-term development, the influence of context factors, the quality of community living, and the neighborly assistance actually provided. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Hence, this explorative study sought to specify the support activities that neighbors in one cohousing project carried out. A survey was conducted in three survey intervals, with questionnaires structured according to the ”Activities” chapter of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (WHO 2002). Findings Respondents reported receiving or providing assistance in all suggested areas of life, but some activities were more common than others. Respondents with long-term support requirements were not assisted by neighbors but by other caregivers. The results indicate that neighborliness depends on the individual activity radius since the scope of assistance varied along with socio-demographic characteristics. Respondents deemed reciprocity important to guarantee the voluntary nature of neighborly support and also to allow care recipients to specify how support should be given. Research limitations/implications The author therefore suggests considering multi-generation cohousing projects as a means to foster Quality of Life rather than to cut costs. Abstract This scoping review explores the benefits, and challenges of major innovative housing and service models for older adults. Several countries are prioritizing housing and service innovation for older adults to address the limitations of traditional market housing in meeting their housing needs and challenges. This study contributes to this issue by reviewing peer-reviewed and grey literature on four well-established innovative housing and service models: cohousing, homesharing, Naturally Occurring Retirement Community Supportive Services Programs (NORC-SSPs), and Villages. Based on the findings synthesized from 65 sources, a pair-wise comparison of (i) cohousing and homesharing; and (ii) NORC-SSPs and Villages was conducted on the basis of: (a) financial aspects (e.g., affordability); and (b) psychosocial aspects (e.g., social interaction and engagement, intergenerationality, autonomy and interdependence, safety, diversity and inclusivity); and (c) long-term sustainability. While there were several financial and psychosocial benefits related to each model, the following challenges were identified that need to be addressed to further improve the relevance and effectiveness of these models: (i) lack of funding and resources to support NORC-SSPs and Villages; (ii) inter-resident conflict in homesharing and cohousing; (iii) limitations of informal support provided by fellow-residents in meeting the needs of older adults with complex needs in all four models; and (iv) lack of inclusivity and sociocultural diversity in cohousing and Villages. By integrating research on older adults’ housing needs and innovative solutions, the findings of this study could guide future housing initiatives that seek to adopt these innovative models by highlighting their strengths, while recognizing areas for improvement.

Abstract In this article, I discuss a collaborative research project with two urban cohousing communities: Kankanmori, in Tokyo, and Quayside Village, in North Vancouver. The project focused on the joint production of the good life in the two communities, both of which situate well-being as simultaneously social and subjective, thus expanding beyond mainstream approaches to happiness narrowly focused on the individual. In what follows, I describe the particular forms that collaboration took over the course of the six-year project and then provide a brief overview of the positive contributions cohousing can make to social and environmental sustainability.

Abstract:

Rats, including those of the Sprague Dawley strain, may kill mice. Because of this muricidal behavior, it is standard practice in many research animal housing facilities to separate mice from rats (i.e., the predators) to minimize stress for the mice. We tested the effect of cohousing on the stress levels of mice from either the C57BL/6J (BL6) or the CD1 strain and Sprague Dawley rats (SD rat) by quantifying their fecal corticosterone and metabolites (FCM) concentration. We also investigated cohousing impacts a behavioral assay, i.e., conditioned place preference for intragenus (i.e., mouse–mouse or rat–rat) dyadic social interaction (DSI CPP) that was shown be sensitive to social factors, especially to handling by humans. We found that the two delivery batches of BL6 mice or SD rats, respectively, had different stress levels at delivery that were statistically significant for the BL6 mice. Even so, the BL6 mice cohoused with rats had significantly increased FCM concentrations, indicative of higher stress levels, as compared to (1) BL6 mice housed alone or (2) BL6 mice at delivery. In contrast to their elevated stress levels, the attractiveness of contextual cues associated with mouse–mouse social interaction (DSI CPP) even increased in rat-cohoused BL6 mice, albeit non-significantly. Thus, cohousing BL6 mice and rats did not impair a behavioral assay in BL6 mice that was proven to be sensitive to handling stress by humans in our laboratory. SD rats cohoused with BL6- or CD1 mice, and CD1 mice cohoused with SD rats, showed DSI CPP that was not different from our previously published data on SD rats and BL6 mice of the Jackson- or NIH substrain obtained in the absence of cohousing. CD1 mice cohoused with rats did not show an increased FCM concentration compared to delivery. Our findings suggest that the effect of cohousing rats and mice under the conditions described above on their stress levels as opposed to their behavior might be less clearcut than generally assumed and might be overriden by conditions that cannot be controlled, i.e., different deliveries. Our findings can help to use research animal housing resources, which are usually limited, more efficiently.

ABSTRACT There has been emerging evidence that immunocompetent hosts can harbor Pneumocystis in their lungs. The purpose of this study was to determine the kinetics of Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. muris infection in adult immunocompetent mice and the host immune response to the organisms. To accomplish this, we exposed adult immunocompetent mice to SCID mice infected with P. carinii f. sp. muris by cohousing. We found that P. carinii f. sp. muris was detectable in the lungs of cohoused immunocompetent mice by PCR by 3 weeks after the beginning of cohousing. At about 4 weeks of cohousing, P. carinii f. sp. muris was readily detectable in the lungs of mice by microscopic techniques. Also at this time, P. carinii f. sp. muris-specific immunoglobulin G was found in the sera of the mice, and CD62low CD4- and CD8-positve T cells accumulated in the lungs. Shortly after this immune response, the P. carinii f. sp. muris organisms were cleared from the lungs. Adult mice cohoused for only 1 week also contained P. carinii f. sp. muris cysts detectable by silver staining at 5 and 6 weeks after the beginning of cohousing. We also found that the P. carinii f. sp. muris organisms grew to greater numbers in the lungs of BALB/c mice than in those of C57BL6 mice. This indicates that immunocompetent hosts develop a mild infection with P. carinii f. sp. muris which resolves in 5 to 6 weeks when there is a detectable immune response to the organism. Once an acquired immune response was initiated, the P. carinii f. sp. muris organisms were quickly eliminated without clinical signs of disease.

Purpose – CoHousing provides a new approach in the UK to older people’s housing, and meets a clear demand for similarly minded groups of individuals who would like to grow old together. The purpose of this paper is to explore how a Collaborative Design Process (CDP) can work, as applied to a soon-to-be realised project in North London. Design/methodology/approach – Report by the architects with comment from an end user on a CDP including end users, architect, developer and housing association management. Findings – A group of individuals that has invested in building decision-making capacity can participate meaningfully in the design of their future homes. Research limitations/implications – This research was focused on one development, so work on a wider range of projects would help test its validity. Social implications – Older Women’s CoHousing (OWCH), and similar projects, demonstrate an appetite for: mutually supportive, intentional communities; planned downsizing and contemporary, sociable design for the third age of life. Originality/value – The CDP developed for OWCH was comprehensively documented. It has already been adapted for further cohousing developments, and is intended to continue to evolve with the demands made on it.

Abstract:

Aggressive behavior is one of congenital social behaviors in many species, which could be promoted by social neglect or isolation in the early stages of life. Many brain regions including the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), medial amygdala (MeA) and ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) are demonstrated to relate to aggressive behavior; however, the dynamic patterns of neural activities during the occurrence of this behavior remain unclear. In this study, 21-day-old male CD-1 mice were reared in social isolation conditions and cohousing conditions for two weeks. Aggressive behaviors of each subject were estimated by the resident–intruder test. Simultaneously, the local field potentials of mPFC, MeA and VMH were recorded for exploring differences in the relative power spectra of different oscillations when aggressive behaviors occurred. The results showed that the following: (1) Compared with the cohousing mice, the socially isolated mice exhibited more aggression. (2) Regardless of “time condition” (pre-, during- and post- attack), the relative power spectra of beta band in the cohousing mice were significantly greater than those in the socially isolated mice, and inversely, the relative power spectra of gamma band in the cohousing mice were significantly smaller than those in the socially isolated mice. (3) The bilateral mPFC exhibited significantly smaller beta power spectra but greater gamma power spectra compared with other brain areas regardless of rearing patterns. (4) For the right VMH of the socially isolated mice, the relative power spectra of the gamma band during attacks were significantly greater than those before attack. These results suggest that aggressive behaviors in mice could be shaped by rearing patterns and that high-frequency oscillations (beta and gamma bands) may engage in mediating aggressive behaviors in mice.

Abstract “We’re on the leading edge of the baby boomers so we don’t do anything like anybody has ever done before and that includes aging.” (Tammy, SS). This quote embodies the perspective of older adults engaged in a new housing phenomenon – older adult cohousing communities (OACCs). OACCs are designed, managed, governed and maintained by the older residents themselves. Seventeen such communities currently exist, and more are being developed by active baby boomers who are searching for more meaningful, relational and eco-friendly options for aging-in-place. The older adult cohousing movement in the U.S., which began in 2005, is small but growing quickly. However, a dearth of literature exists on this phenomenon. This qualitative study examined older adult cohousers’ lived experiences. The study employed an existential-phenomenological research method. Maximum variation purposive sampling was employed. Twelve communities were identified that represented the full range of geographic environments, structures, missions, cost and size. Interviews were conducted individually or in focus groups. In all, 73 older adult cohousers participated in the study. The Gerotranscendence Theory of Aging was used to guide the development of the structured interview questions and to organize data analysis and interpretation. Digital recordings were transcribed, and an inductive method was used to allow codes and themes to arise from the data itself. Patton’s (1990) criteria for judging themes was employed. This poster will clarify the nature, principles and structure of OACCs. Themes that emerged from the study - benefits, challenges, aging-in-place, interpersonal relationships and personal growth - will be described .

The NLRP1 inflammasome attenuates inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) progression and colitis-associated tumorigenesis. A possible mechanism postulates that the lack of the NLRP1 inflammasome creates permissive niches in the gut for pathogenic bacteria to flourish, causing dysbiosis and increased IBD susceptibility. To evaluate this hypothesis, we characterized the gut microbiome of wild-type, Nlrp1b–/–, and Asc–/– mice under naïve conditions by sequencing the V3 region of the 16s rRNA gene. For both genetically modified mouse lines, the microbiome composition reflected overrepresentation of bacteria associated with dysbiosis relative to wild-type animals. Measurement of short- and medium-chain fatty acids by mass spectrometry further revealed significant differences between genotypes. However, prior to concluding that the NLRP1 inflammasome plays a role in regulating the composition of the microbiome, we evaluated two additional strategies for cohousing wild-type and Nlrp1b–/– mice: breeding homozygous parents and cohousing at weaning, and breeding from heterozygous parents and cohousing littermates. We found that maternal influence was the greater predictor of microbiome composition rather than genotype. With the rise in microbiome research across disciplines, our study should be viewed as a cautionary example that illustrates the importance of careful breeding and housing strategies when evaluating host-microbiome interactions.

The two alternative housing typologies that are quite common in more developed countries today, cohousing and coliving, attract a lot of attention of both architects and scientists. Scholars are still actively dealing with determining the motives and the clear typological definition of these two typologies. Following a review of the basic characteristics through a historical overview and contemporary works of the two mentioned residential typologies, this paper presents a comparative analysis of their basic spatial and functional characteristics. The presented examples and characteristics can serve as a basis for further research, understanding and defining cohousing and coliving housing typologies.

It has been argued that attachment to place increases wellbeing in old age (Wiles et al., 2009). Feeling ‘in place’ can increase an older person's wellbeing. For older migrants it can be a challenge to live in-between cultures. The objective of the article is to explore how older Antillean migrants derive a sense of wellbeing from attachment to their everyday places. We do so by drawing on in-depth interviews and a photography project with Antilleans who live in a senior cohousing community in a city in the Northern Netherlands. Based on the study, we conclude that the cohousing community acted as a central setting of experience from which the participants explored their wider surroundings and developed new attachments in the neighbourhood.

Abstract A new alternative living arrangement has emerged in the U.S., in which older adults proactively choose how, where, and with whom they want to live, in a close-knit community where neighbors look out for each other. Adopting the cohousing model originally established in northern Europe, these elder intentional communities are distinctive, as they are run by the residents themselves, and there is a focus on neighbors helping each other. Drawing from over a decade of research incorporating data from six communities, the challenges and benefits of establishing such a community will be addressed and the requirements necessary for mutual support to thrive will be identified. Finally, the model of aging better together intentionally, developed from the senior cohousing experience, will be shared, as well as the implications for how the model can be used for planning and policy in other settings.
