50 Japanese women, all college students, were asked to draw two kinds of Japanese coins. Recall of both common and distinctive features of coins was examined. Analysis showed that memory for the coins was poor over-all and that more distinctive than common features were recalled. These findings suggested that a coin's schema consists of more distinctive features than common features. The results also showed that subjects with larger memory spans tended to recall more distinctive and common features than subjects with smaller spans, but the difference was not significant. The Choson Dynasty stopped issuing coins for a while after issuing large-scale coins during the great famine from 1695 to 1697. The suspension of coin issuance caused various problems, including a shortage of coins, over time. The biggest problem was the loan shark using coins. Farmers paid taxes by buying coins at high prices. Poor farmers borrowed coins and suffered heavy losses from excessive interest. The solution was largely divided into two. One was to eliminate all coins and not use them, and the other was to reduce the value of coins by supplying them in large quantities on the market.

This study was conducted to examine the memory for coins of 7-yr.-old children and junior college students. Subjects in the free-recall group were asked to draw a coin from memory. Those in the cued-recall group used another coin as a retrieval cue to draw a coin. Analysis showed that students recalled significantly more distinctive features than children, but there were no significant differences on common and covariant features recalled by students and children. These results suggest that adults have elaborated schemata with more distinctive features for coins than do children.
