The field of galaxy formation is as rich and diverse as the many disciplines encompassed by it. A comprehensive theory must encapsulate structure formation and evolution on scales as small as stars, whilst simultaneously illustrating the natural occurrence of the physical conditions required, from the cosmological perspective. Whilst current analytical techniques have been highly successful in quantifying the bulk properties of a galaxy population evolving within some cosmological scenario, to trace the detailed evolution of individual objects requires the use of numerical codes.

In this thesis, assuming that higher spatial dimensions existed only during the inflationary prematter phases of the universe, we construct a (1+D)-dimensional (D&gt<br>3), nonsingular, homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann model for dimensional reduction. In this model, dimensional reduction occurs in the form of a phase transition that follows from a purely thermodynamical consideration that the universe heats up during the inflationary prematter phases. When the temperature reaches its Planck value Tpl,D, which is taken as the maximum attainable physical temperature, the phase of the univers

Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) has exhibited inherent structural and architectural advantages over other constructional materials, for example, high strength-to-weight ratio, ease of fabrication, economy in transportation and the flexibility of sectional profiles, which make CFS ideal for modern residential and industrial buildings. They have been increasingly used as purlins as the intermediate members in a roof system, or load-bearing components in low- and mid-rise buildings. However, using CFS members in building structures has been facing challenges due to the lack of knowledge to th

Abstract:
Biofilms are colonies of bacteria attached to the surface at a solid-fluid interface. Bacteria in biofilm produce exopolysaccharides (EPS) that form a gel-like matrix in which the bacteria are embedded. Biofilms have numerous consequences in industrial and medical settings, both positive (bioreactors, digestion) and negative (blocking, as corrosive damage of materials/devices, food contamination, clinical infection). The use of antibiotics or mechanical clearing can be effective at removing biofilms, but such treatments are not always effective or appropriate in all situations. Recently, non-t
