Senentz, Daniel I. Jr. "The Andry Family, The 1811 Slave Revolt, and The German Coast Project." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2019. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2642.

Full text
Abstract:
The German Coast Project explores the early nineteenth century history of the Louisiana’s German Coast, spanning its formative years, the 1811 Slave Revolt, and the aftermath of the revolt, through the perspective of the Andry family. The website is powered through Omeka software, which creates a historical exhibition of compiled research. In addition, ArcGIS contributed to the website’s construction, as it allowed for the inclusion of interactive programs and maps within the website. Designed for high school students and genealogists, The German Coast Project creates new scholarship pertaining to the German Coast and the 1811 Slave Revolt, through the often-overlooked perspective of the Andry family. The primary theme of the project is to portray how Manuel Andry and his family were able to prosper financially after the 1811 Slave Revolt, even though they suffered a heavy emotional loss.

Nua, Shaun C. "Canadian Family Leisure, Family Functioning, and Family Satisfaction: A Family Perspective." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4302.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to further examine the relationship between family leisure variables and the dependent variables of family functioning and satisfaction with family life among a broad, national sample of Canadian families using the Core and Balance framework. Specifically, this study examined how both family leisure involvement (core and balance) and family leisure satisfaction contributed to the explanation of variance in family functioning and satisfaction with family life. Because the data were nested in families, this study accounted for family-level variance by incorporating mixed modeling. The sample consisted of 943 families across Canada including one parent and one child between the ages of 11 and 16 (n = 1886). Findings added to previous Canadian family leisure studies by reporting empirical relationships between family leisure variables and outcome variables and doing so from a broad national sample. Findings were also consistent with trends in other countries reporting satisfaction with core family leisure involvement as the single strongest predictor of both family functioning and satisfaction with family life among Canadian families. Furthermore, while core family leisure satisfaction was the driving force in the explanation of variance in family satisfaction, findings suggest there must be participation in both core and balance family leisure. Additional implications for Canadian families, scholars, professionals, and policy makers are discussed.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between family differentiation, family recreation and symptoms of eating disorders. The Family Intrusiveness Scales, the Perceived Social Support from Family, the Family Leisure Activity Profile and the Eating Attitudes Test were used. Participants were students at two large universities, one in the East and one in the West. Data were analyzed using correlation and ANCOVA. Findings supported the hypothesis that a positive relationship exists between family leisure involvement and family differentiation. In addition, a negative relationship between family differentiation and symptoms of eating disorders for individuals whose parents are not in their first marriage was indicated by the results.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation, "Artful Manipulation: The Rockefeller Family and Cold War America," examines how the Rockefeller family used the Museum of Modern Art, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection to shape opinions about America, both at home and abroad, during the early years of the Cold War. The work done at Colonial Williamsburg tied the Rockefeller name to the foundations of American society and, later, to the spread of global democracy in the Cold War world. The establishment of a new museum for the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art collection in 1957 renewed the narrative that American folk art was the basis for American modern art, thus creating a legacy of creative cultural production that could match America's Cold War economic and military power. A close reading of the Museum of Modern Art's famous 1955 Family of Man exhibition shows how the Rockefellers promoted America as the head of the post-war global family. The show, a large scale photography exhibition, glorified universal humanism as the only option for global peace after World War II. The implicit message of the show, which traveled nationally and internationally through 1962, was that Americans would lead the free world in the second half of the twentieth century. In their insistence on shaping American society in their view, the Rockefellers shut out dissenting opinions and alternative narratives about American culture. A consideration of James Baldwin and Richard Avedon's 1964 photo-text Nothing Personal is then offered as a rebuttal to the narrative of modern American culture endorsed by the Rockefellers. In Nothing Personal, James Baldwin's essays and Richard Avedon's photographs signify on the narrative of white domination, the same narrative evoked across the Rockefellers' institutions. Juxtaposing Nothing Personal against the hegemonic work of the Rockefellers' cultural organizations offers readers a consideration of how narratives of exclusion necessitate and give life to narratives of resistance.

Deng, Yunfei 1974. "Simplified decoding for a Quasi-Orthogonal space-time code family." Thesis, McGill University, 2004. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=81534.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers simplified decoding for a type of full-rate non-orthogonal complex space-time block codes (STBCs) over Rayleigh fading channels. More precisely, we propose a decision feedback symbol-by-symbol decoding algorithm for the Quasi-Orthogonal code family, that comprises the Quasi-Orthogonal code and the Improved Quasi-Orthogonal code, by using the QR decomposition. Compared to optimal joint decoding, this algorithm significantly reduces complexity. For performance evaluations of the simplified decoding algorithm for the Quasi-Orthogonal code family over Rayleigh fading channels, we derive upper and lower bounds for symbol error rate. Furthermore, by using high SNR asymptotics we investigate the diversity orders provided by different decoding algorithms. The analysis shows that because of the relative constellation rotation, the diversity order provided by optimal decoding for the Improved Quasi-Orthogonal code is 4. Also, because of the error propagation in the decision feedback, the diversity order provided by the simplified decoding for the Improved Quasi-Orthogonal code is reduced to 2. All analytical results match well the associated computer simulations. Finally, we compare the performances of the simplified and optimal decoding for the Improved Quasi-Orthogonal code over correlated Rayleigh fading channels by using the "one-ring" channel model. Through computer simulations we show that the relative performance loss between the simplified and optimal decoding decreases as channel correlation increases. Therefore, the simplified decoding algorithm is suitable for highly spatially correlated Rayleigh fading channels.

Abstract:
The family law has been contracted, and is giving more importance to individual wills. Since marriage is a very important act, the state always has to intervene in this subject. The institutional dimension of marriage reflects the controlover marriage and family matters from the public prosecutor. Since 2004, the public prosecutor represents one of the most important parties in Moroccan family law. He can take anyaction to reinforce the provisions of the Family law. The external observer could only be pleased by such a reform. However the provisions of the family law remain contradictory. Article 3 of the Family Code, and the Article 9 of the Civil Code Procedure, promulgated two texts on the same day that are contradictory. It is clear that marriage and public prosecutor raise many questions. Generally, what is the current status of these two institutions and how do they progress? this question is precisely what our work aims to answer. To carry out our study, it was important to focus on the solutions founded by French law, when it faced issues similar to those that Moroccan lawis currently dealing with

Abstract:
The stories in this collection reflect the absurdities of contemporary American family life, and the particularly distressing economic conditions of the present moment. These stories often employ absurdist elements. Because of the personal history that informs my work, realism does not seem an appropriate form for me. My oldest son, in whom my emotional well-being is heavily invested, is autistic. He is not “normal"? in a way that others would understand as “normal."? Parenting a child with special needs changes the way a marriage operates, deforming it. The personal experience that drives these stories often seems fantastical even to me. I don’t write about my personal experiences, but I write about the impressions that those experiences make upon me. In this way, my work is descriptive rather than didactic.

Abstract:
On 5 February 2004, the new Moroccan Family Code came into force after being unanimously voted by the Parliament. This reform is a major event in the history of Morocco and a pioneering experience which begins to serve as a model in the Arab and Muslim worlds. It caused within Moroccan society a radical change because it was unthinkable to touch the Moudawana. Discrimination and inequality against women and girls in the former text have been justified by reference to the rules and laws of classical fiqh which often incompatible with social reality. To establish the modernist and democratic choice in a changing society, the Moroccan legislator desacrilizes this subject to meet the demands of modernity and safeguard the stability of the family unit. The reform has a Muslim base, but it opens itself to changes in society by renouncing all concepts that undermine the dignity and humanity of women and by providing basic guarantees to strengthen the legal, judicial and administrative protection of the family institution. The new Family Code also brings a change for Moroccans living abroad who were, under the old Moudawana, found in weak legal situations. The reform will reduce opportunities for conflicts in the Moroccan-European relations but without completely removing them because the attachment to certain rules of Islamic law may seem like an opposition factor between a religious system and a secular one

Leung, Newman Kwok-Cheung. "Family interaction and cognitive content in the aetiology and treatment of eating disorders." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 1999. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.368995.

Full text
Abstract:
A review of the literature reveals two significant gaps in existing psychological research into eating disorders. First, despite a clear association between dysfunctional family environment and eating psychopathology, little is known about factors that might mediate between the two. Second, cognitive-behavioural treatment is unexpectedly ineffective in anorexia nervosa or in some cases of bulimia nervosa. To fill these gaps, the present research investigated the role of core beliefs in the aetiology and treatment of eating disorders. Given their early origin, core beliefs may plausibly mediate between family environment and eating disorders. In addition, unhealthy core beliefs might explain the resistance to cognitive-behavioural treatment in some instances. The thesis first considers the relationship between unhealthy core beliefs and eating psychopathology in anorexic and bulimic women. This is followed by an examination of core beliefs as an outcome predictor in cognitive-behavioural treatment for eating disorders. Finally, the role of core beliefs as a mediator between dysfunctional family environment and eating disorders is investigated. The results demonstrate high levels of unhealthy core beliefs in both anorexic and bulimic women. These core beliefs also predict the level of symptom reduction following cognitive-behavioural treatment, but only in the bulimic women. While core beliefs play a perfect mediating role in the family interaction-eating disorders link in bulimia nervosa, this relationship is less clear-cut in anorexia nervosa.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to provide insight into the factors contributing to relatedness in children, specifically family recreation, and to look at relatedness between family members (family relatedness), and whether or not family recreation makes a contribution to this construct. Two instruments were used to collect data for this study. The Family Leisure Activity Profile (FLAP) measured family recreation involvement and satisfaction, and the Activity-Feelings States Scales (AFS) measured child and family relatedness. The sample included elementary school children between the ages of 6 years and 12 years (n1=405), and the parents of those children (n2=405). The data showed satisfaction with family recreation activities was a significant predictor of children's relatedness with their peers. The data also showed involvement in balance family recreation activities was a significant predictor of a family's relatedness with one another.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines British nuclear policymaking during the late 1970s and early 1980s with a focus on its political implications. Highlighting the important link between nuclear politics and alliance coordination, the dissertation demonstrates that at a time of increased Alliance disunity (over Vietnam, détente, etc.) NATO policymakers achieved a broad consensus on theater nuclear policy that in effect stabilized the Alliance against the crises of the 1970s. The dissertation focuses especially on the U.K.’s role in this; British policymakers’ unique ability to mediate between the U.S. and continental Europe contributed enormously to the success of NATO in this period. Taking the British decision to update its strategic nuclear weapons and the coterminous debates in NATO over theater nuclear weapons, carried out against the backdrop of heightened public opposition and debate, it argues that nuclear politics played an integral role in structuring alliances and that this recalibration not only precipitated the end of the Cold War, but also ensured the Alliance’s post-Cold War viability. This research revises our understanding of the Cold War. This dissertation demonstrates that the Cold War, traditionally regarded as a bipolar conflict between superpowers, was often waged through alliances and that the policy preferences of lesser alliance partners mattered tremendously. The dissertation, furthermore, provides evidence for the way in which British policymakers retained an unexpected and disproportionate influence for the U.K. in world affairs—via their ability to successfully mediate within NATO

Delgado, Maria Rocio. "SPANISH HERITAGE LANGUAGE SOCIALIZATION PRACTICES OF A FAMILY OF MEXICAN ORIGIN." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195638.

Full text
Abstract:
This ethnographic case study describes the patterns of language socialization and literacy/biliteracy practices and the patterns of language choice and language use of a Spanish heritage bilingual family of Mexican origin from the participant perspective, the emic view, and the research perspective, an etic view. This analysis attempts to broaden the knowledge of how Mexican origin families use language at home by demonstrating how literacy/biliteracy practices (i.e., reading, writing and talk/conversation), language choice (i.e., Spanish, English, code-switching (CS)) and language use (i.e., domains) contribute to reinforce, develop or hinder the use of Spanish as a heritage language. Using ethnographic methodology, this study analyzes the participants' naturally occurring language interactions. Socialization and language learning are seen as intricately interwoven processes in which language learners participate actively. The analysis and discussion is presented in two sections: 1) language socialization in conjunction with literacy practices, and 2) language socialization in conjunction with language choice and CS. Language choice and CS are analyzed by means of conversation analysis theory (CA): the analysis of language sequences of the participants' conversation. The description of the domains (i.e., what participants do with each language and the way they use language) constitutes the basis for the analysis. The findings of this study show that language shift to English is imminent in an environment of reduced contact with parents, siblings, and the community of the heritage language group. Understanding which literacy practices are part of the everyday life of Hispanic households is relevant to the implementation of classroom literacy practices.

Juodeikis, Rokas. "Engineering membranes in Escherichia coli : the magnetosome, LemA protein family and outer membrane vesicles." Thesis, University of Kent, 2016. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/61062/.

Full text
Abstract:
Magnetosomes are membranous organelles found in magnetotactic bacteria (MTB). The organelle consist of ferromagnetic crystals housed within a lipid bilayer chained together by an actin-like filament and allows MTB to orient within magnetic fields. The genetic information required to produce these organelles has been linked to four different operons, encoding for 30 genes. These membranous organelles and the magnetic minerals housed within have various biotechnological applications, therefore enhanced recombinant production of such structures in a model organism holds significant potential. The research described in this thesis is focuses on the production of recombinant magnetosomes in the model organism Escherichia coli. Cloning the genes involved in the generation of the organelle individually or in various combinations resulted in the construction of over 100 different plasmids, compatible with the model organism. SDS-PAGE and electron microscopy analysis was used to characterise E. coli cells harbouring these constructs. The observation of electron dense particles, arranged in a chain structure, show that magnetosome generation in the model organism is possible, but is highly dependent on the growth conditions used. The need for specific growth conditions is later backed up by the analysis of the maturation of the cytochrome c proteins involved in magnetosome biomineralisation, which can only be correctly processed under certain conditions. Individual production of two different magnetosome proteins, MamQ or MamY, allowed the generation of various membranous structures in E. coli observed in 48.9% and 56.2% of the whole population of cells respectively. Combinations of these with MamI, MamL or MamB in a variety of combinations led to a variation in the phenotype observed. Bioinformatics analysis of MamQ led to the discovery of a novel membrane restructuring protein family, the LemA protein family, present in a broad range of bacteria. Four different LemA proteins from Bacillus megaterium, Clostridium kluyveri, Brucella melitensis or Pseudomonas aeruginosa were then produced in E. coli and the analysis of the resulting strains revealed the presence of novel intracellular membranous structures which vary in size, form and localisation. Furthermore, when attempts were made to target these proteins for the modification of the outer membrane, a mechanism for increased outer membrane vesicle generation was serendipitously discovered and different effects of these proteins were once again observed. Together, the results described shows good evidence for recombinant magnetosome production in E. coli and opens a new avenue of membrane engineering in this commonly used organism. Such membranous structures have various biotechnological applications, such as enhanced metabolic engineering potential or specialised lipid vesicle production.

Abstract:
Focusing on the stories of three women shaped by the expectations and attitudes of the times in which they live, my novel covers the periods 1921-1937, 1937-1972, and 1973 and participates in the discourse on women's changing historical circumstances and new class and gender identities. It therefore can be read in the category of a novel of manners or a middlebrow novel. My purpose has been to explore, through creating my own characters and story, the dramatic social, cultural and economic changes that have taken place in the middle part of the twentieth century for Western women. In tracing the trajectory from one generation to the next, my fiction responds to and is inflected by the style of narration obtaining at the time. It engages, for instance, with the "reality" constructed by writers such as Virginia Woolf, Christa Wolf, and Margaret Drabble within the genre of women's fiction: of women writing for each other, in a small-scale and intimate way, and integrating the story of an individual life with the circumstances of the time. My aim has been, through writing fiction, to re-examine certain concepts of the past for myself and for the contemporary reader in order to reach slightly different conclusions and to begin to understand the past in a new way.

Dailloux, Jean Paul. "Les lois successorales de la révolution française : une anticipation de l'évolution de la famille?" Thesis, Lyon, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019LYSE3034.

Full text
Abstract:
Law historians have long ignored the civil law of the French Revolution, pejoratively termed as “intermediate right”. But since the bicentennial of the French Revolution, they have revised their appreciation and highlighted the modernity of this legislation that can now be considered as an anticipation of the contemporary law of the family. This thesis is a contribution to this rehabilitation work. The inheritance law of the old regime was characterized by the inequality of hits rules. The proclamation of civil equality in the Declaration of the Rights of Man of 1789 implied a complete overhaul of this subject. The first two assemblies, the Constituent Assembly and the Legislative Assembly, had only begun this work, removing the most obvious inequalities, the privileges of aeness and masculinity, which was the occasion for discussions on the right to test. It was the Convention that carried out the most important reforms at the height of the Revolution, at a time when ideological tensions were exacerbated. A first draft of the Civil Code was discussed but did not succeed.Pending the drafting of a second amended draft, it was resolved to implement some parts of the first, on matters which seemed particularly urgent. Thus, “appendix articles” of the first Code were implemented by means of two laws. The first is that of 12 Brumaire year II on the rights of natural children, which were essentially inheritance rights. The second is the law of 17 Nivôse year II, on the devolution of inheritance and the equality of shares.Their common feature was to introduce retroactivity into the settlement of estates opened since July 14, 1789, the symbolic date of the advent of freedom, to hasten the implementation of the new principles. . This retroactive effect was then violently criticized , as soon as the political situation tuned around with the elimination of the Robespierrists. Many complaints poured out to show the serious practical inconvenience of this situation. The later legislators returned to this effect, by means of laws which extended from the 9th Fructidor year III, to the 3rd Vendemiaire year IV. The drafters of the Civil Code maintained the principle of equality in the family based on the marriage. But with regard to the children born out of the wedlock, the Code of 1804 devotes the harshest solutions that could be imagined against them. It is no longer a question of even moderate equality. The situation of these children was only very slowly improved for 150 years. However, this movement accelerated from 1972 onwards to current situation

Abstract:
The French Law has exercised significant influence on Congolese codifications; the most outstanding example is no doubt civil codifications. In reality, the Congolese legal system once based on the unwritten customary law made on multiple customs and community behaviours received through the Belgian colonization, with some adjustments, the Napoleonic Code that the Belgium has therefore received from Napoleonic conquests. This Code is also always applied in Belgium. But after the Congolese’s national independence, political power had wanted to replace the colonial Code which was the mentality and Congolese customs but still incomplete. Furthermore, the legislative work initiated on the part relating to the rights of persons and the family, which led to performing in 1987 of the Family Code, had advocated the use of the right traditional (authenticity). However, apart from the integration of a few customary institutions, this new Congolese Code is the modern fundamental (imperative of development). In fact, it renewed and even amplified the French law that associated others European rights and African postcolonial. But today, this Code has definitely aged; what might therefore be the best remedies to more valuable ? _______________________________________________________________________________________

Abstract:

The purpose of this policy analysis was to examine Article 10: Dependent Children-Judgments and Orders, Welfare and Institutions Code (WIC) 361.5, which describes the criteria for offering or denying visitation and reunification services to incarcerated parents or guardians with their children in out-of-home care. This analysis begins with a historical overview of the incarceration explosion in the past decades, and its relation to children in out-of-home care. The policy analysis identifies systemic challenges faced by incarcerated parents as they make efforts to reunify and preserve their child-parent relationships. The analysis is based on Gil’s (1992) original nationally recognized framework and updated by Jimenez, Pasztor, Chambers, and Fujii, (2015). Limitations and alternative policy recommendations that could best meet these objectives are provided.

Abstract:
Parents are the first source of a child's learning of her or his gender. In fact, sex-role stereotyping of infants by parents may occur within the first 24 hours of birth. This study examined the nature of parental stereotyping on the basis of their infant's sex by obtaining parents' descriptions of their newborn and toy and clothing preferences for their newborn. In 1974, Rubin found that parents responded stereotypically to their infants on the basis of sex. Following Rubin's interview approach, 50 parent pairs from two urban hospitals were asked to participate in a parent-infant study and were subsequently interviewed 24 hours postpartum. Parents were asked open-ended descriptive questions about their newborn, given a semantic differential scale of 18 bi-polar objectives, asked about the importance of others recognizing their baby's sex, and asked a set of questions relating to the preference of clothing and toy choices for their newborn. Findings suggest that parents do stereotype their infants on the basis of biological sex. Sons were more likely to be described as strong, perfect, big or big-featured and energetic,--while daughters received more descriptions that mentioned their eyes, skin, or facial features and were also more likely to be described as small, tiny, or weak. Parents of boys were also more likely to state a preference for gender-specific toys and clothing. Infant sex did not make a notable difference on the importance that parents attributed to others recognizing their baby's sex. Fathers were more likely to perceive and describe their daughters more stereotypically than were mothers of either daughters or sons. Further studies to investigate gender stereotyping and its consequences as well as the interplay between the macro and micro levels of gender relations in society are suggested.

Thomas, Michael. "Same-sex marriage, civil partnerships and stigma : coming in from the cold?" Thesis, Cardiff University, 2012. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/46287/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a cross-national, comparative study of legal recognition for lesbian and gay couples, focusing on civil partnerships in the UK and marriage in Canada and the US State of California. The study investigates the impact of same-sex marriage and civil partnership from the perspectives of lesbian and gay couples and, in particular, addresses the social implications of couples’ new legal status. The thesis investigates the impact of marriage or civil partnership within couples’ family and friendship networks and in a range of less intimate social contexts, including the workplace, the neighbourhood and commercial settings. The thesis also analyses the impact of legal recognition on couples’ sense of citizenship and assesses the effects of the Proposition 8 referendum, which repealed existing same-sex marriage rights in California in 2008. Drawing on qualitative data gathered from in-depth interviews with married or civil partner same-sex couples in the UK, Canada and California, the study analyses couples’ narratives around legal recognition to identify the meanings they attach to their new legal status. In the context of the wider policy objectives of legal recognition with regard to tackling discrimination and acknowledging same-sex couples within family and other social networks, the thesis applies Erving Goffman’s analysis of stigma to this evolving policy context. The study concludes that couples broadly welcomed the legal entitlements that flowed from marriage or civil partnership, and often saw legal recognition as providing opportunities to seek social recognition from within their personal networks. However, legal recognition did not in itself guarantee social recognition, and sometimes revealed the continuing marginalisation of lesbian and gay couples within family networks and in other social settings. This highlights a distinction between legal and social recognition, and points towards a significant gap between the policy ambitions attached to marriage and civil partnership and their micro-social impact.

Abstract:
The Swedish civil defense during the Cold War Era was a well-developed and well-planned organization in comparison to many other countries. This caused civil defense ideas to come closer to individual citizens’ everyday lives and influence how they should adapt to the threat of nuclear war, thus creating a culture of civil defense. The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate what this militarization of everyday life looked like in Sweden during the Cold War and how it affected people’s everyday life. This is done through studying a civil defense journal between 1945-1975. The articles in the journal are analyzed by how they are portraying the day-to-day life in the context of civil defense. Partly through articles about propaganda and various civil defense courses and exercises, and partly through articles portraying the physical militarization of society, primarily fallout shelters and bunkers. Of particular interest is the contrast between the dark Cold War narrative and the narrative concerning the security and comfort provided by the welfare state. Finally, the thesis argues that the journal and its work can be seen in the context of militarization of everyday life. It tried to spread its militarizing vision in society, and did – incomparison to other countries – succeed in that pursuit. Militarization played a vital role in reaching out to the public, and in disseminating the idea of a welfare state that takes good care of its citizens, even during the hardest of times.

Abstract:
Emile Acollas (1826-1891), brilliant scholar of law, is a figure whose work demands to be discovered in the judicial world. As a civil rights specialist, he took part in the radical movement and fight against the Second Empire and the Napoleonic Code. He was a man of judicial convictions: throughout his work, he exposes his concept of a Republic that he believes should be governed by Law and Liberty.Acollas’ ambition to institutionalize and perpetuate the Republic leads him to initiate a rethinking of the judicial order. His « democratic ideal » becomes the new order that will serve to carry out this reform. It encompasses the heritage of the principles of 1789 summarized in the theory of the autonomy of the individual. It is this supreme value that will thus guide the revision of Law. In this process of change, priority is to be given to the family as the foundation of society and the cornerstone of the new order. Motivated by his « Idea of Law », Acollas creates this concept of Republican Family Law as a guardian of the individual and of ethics. His naturalistic philosophy of liberty contradicts the paternalistic civil law of the times dictated by the Napoleonic Code. His judicial analyses are pedagogical and bring out the existing gaps in the laws governing marriage and filiation. The evolution of Family Law will consecrate, indirectly, the reforms proposed by this civil rights advocate. The very latest legislative breakthroughs seem to consecrate his plea for equality

Bishop, Tom. "Every home a fortress : the fallout shelter father in Cold War America." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/39958/.

Full text
Abstract:
During the nuclear crisis years of 1958 to 1961, millions of U.S. citizens were instructed by their federal government that the best chance of surviving a direct nuclear confrontation with the Soviet Union resided in converting their backyards or basements into family fallout shelters. Directing their policies towards middle-class suburban America, civil defence policymakers asked citizens to realign their lives and family relationships in accordance with a new doctrine of ‘do-it-yourself’ survival, stating that middle-class suburban fathers had the capacity and resources to protect both themselves and their families from the worst possible manmade disaster. “Every Home a Fortress: The Fallout Shelter Father in Cold War America” is the first historical study of fatherhood and the family fallout shelter during the early Cold War. Focusing specifically on the cultural and political representations of fatherhood and masculinity in the formation of and public reaction to the doctrine of civil defence, this project examines the tension between the politics of ‘do-it-yourself’ survival and the lived reality. The process and practice of fallout shelter construction represented an almost unprecedented level of state penetration into the private sphere. Yet, as the ideal of shelter fatherhood permeated society, a widening gap emerged between the political rhetoric of civil defence and the everyday experience of the ordinary Americans facing the prospect of building a family fallout shelter and surviving the next war. Each chapter of this thesis explores the lived reality of civil defence, highlighting the ways in which U.S. fathers interpreted and reinterpreted the act of private shelter construction. Rather than fostering one singular politicised vision of Cold War fatherhood, this thesis argues that fallout shelters brought to the surface a variety of interlinked visions of Cold War fatherhood, rooted in narratives of domesticity, militarism, and survivalism. Central to these narratives of masculinity was the private fallout shelter itself, a malleable Cold War space that inspired a new national discourse around notions of nationhood, domestic duty, and collective assumptions of what it meant to be a father in the nuclear age.

Portt, Andrea. "Substrate specificities of outer membrane proteases of the omptin family in «Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, and Citrobacter rodentium»." Thesis, McGill University, 2010. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=95162.

Full text
Abstract:
Outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of the omptin family are present in some Gram-negative bacteria. Omptins protect cells by cleaving antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). For example, the Escherichia coli OmpT and OmpP impart resistance by cleaving the AMP protamine, and PgtE of Salmonella enterica was also reported to cleave AMPs. Despite identification of many in vitro substrates, few physiological substrates have been tested. Our laboratory recently identified the omptin CroP of Citrobacter rodentium, which cleaves the murine α-helical AMP mCRAMP and the similarly α-helical synthetic AMP C18G. We examined AMPs as substrates of several omptins. OmpT, OmpP, and CroP cleave the AMP C18G more effectively than PgtE, leading to higher minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs). This suggests that AMP cleavage is an important function of OmpT, OmpP, and CroP during infection. Based on initial results, we attempted to compare and contrast specificity and catalytic activity of C18G cleavage by purified CroP and PgtE.
