Abstract:
The printed circuited heat exchanger (PCHE) contain several different channel configurations, such as straight channel, zigzag channel and wavy channel. The wavy channel has better thermal performance than the straight channel and better hydraulic performance than the zigzag channel. This paper explores the thermal hydraulic performance of wavy channel PCHE. The numerical analysis of the PCHE in different materials and geometric parameters are conducted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool. The materials applied in simulations involve Alloy617, Titanium Grade 3, Carlson 2205, UNS S30400 and Sandvik 253A. The results show that the materials have little effect on the thermal-hydraulic performance. The geometric parameters include channel degree varying from 10°to 50°, channel amplitude varying from 1mm to 5mm and the radium of hot/cold channel varying from 0.4mm to 2.0mm. It is found that the larger radium of hot channel results out the lower Nusselt number and lower fanning-friction factor while the higher radium of cold channel produces the higher Nusselt number and lower fanning-friction factor. The larger channel amplitude indicates the higher fanning-friction factor and lower Nusselt number. The larger channel degree indicates the higher fanning-friction factor, and higher Nusselt number.

Abstract:
The interpeak latencies (IPLs) of the acoustically evoked brain stem potentials depend on brain stem temperature. This was used to see whether face fanning during hyperthermia lowers brain stem temperature. In 15 subjects, three thermally stable conditions were maintained by a water bath. In each condition the IPLs were determined in 10 separate trials. In condition A esophageal temperature (Tes) was 36.9 +/- 0.3 degrees C and increased to 38.6 +/- 0.2 degrees C in condition B. In conditions A and B the head was enclosed in a ventilated hood (air temperature 38 degrees C, relative humidity 100%) to suppress any direct heat loss from the head. From conditions A to B the IPL at peaks I-V decreased by 0.146 ms/degrees C change in Tes, reflecting a change in brain stem temperature. In condition C the hood was removed and the face was fanned by a cold air-stream (8–15 degrees C, 4–10 m/s) to maximize direct heat loss from the head. Skin temperature at the sweating forehead decreased from 38 to 23 degrees C, whereas Tes in condition C was maintained at the same level as in condition B (38.5 +/- 0.2 degrees C). The IPL at peaks I-V showed no difference between conditions B and C. It is concluded that face fanning in hyperthermic subjects does not dissociate brain stem temperature from Tes.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective: To assess existing original research addressing the efficiency of whole-body cooling modalities in the treatment of exertional hyperthermia. Data Sources: During April 2007, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, SportDiscus, CINAHL, and Cochrane Reviews databases as well as ProQuest for theses and dissertations to identify research studies evaluating whole-body cooling treatments without limits. Key words were cooling, cryotherapy, water immersion, cold-water immersion, ice-water immersion, icing, fanning, bath, baths, cooling modality, heat illness, heat illnesses, exertional heatstroke, exertional heat stroke, heat exhaustion, hyperthermia, hyperthermic, hyperpyrexia, exercise, exertion, running, football, military, runners, marathoner, physical activity, marathoning, soccer, and tennis. Data Synthesis: Two independent reviewers graded each study on the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Seven of 89 research articles met all inclusion criteria and a minimum score of 4 out of 10 on the PEDro scale. Conclusions: After an extensive and critical review of the available research on whole-body cooling for the treatment of exertional hyperthermia, we concluded that ice-water immersion provides the most efficient cooling. Further research comparing whole-body cooling modalities is needed to identify other acceptable means. When ice-water immersion is not possible, continual dousing with water combined with fanning the patient is an alternative method until more advanced cooling means can be used. Until future investigators identify other acceptable whole-body cooling modalities for exercise-induced hyperthermia, ice-water immersion and cold-water immersion are the methods proven to have the fastest cooling rates.

Abstract:
Experimental results of the thermal and hydraulic performances of silicon-based, low aspect ratio micropin-fin cold plates under cross flow conditions are reported. The pins were both circular and square in shape with dimensions (diameter for circular and sides for square) ranging from 50μm to 150μm. The test chip contained 20 integral 75×75μm temperature sensors which were used to determine the thermal resistance (KW−1) of the cold plates. The experiments were conducted using water, over a Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 40 to 1000. The data show that the average Nusselt number (Nu) based on the fin diameter varies as Re0.84 for Re<100 and as Re0.73 for Re>100, where Re is the Reynolds number based on maximum velocity and the fin diameter. Analysis of the Fanning friction factor (f) data shows that f varies as Re−1.35 for Re<100 and as Re−0.1 for Re>100.

Abstract:
AbstractThe worldwide distribution of honeybees and their fast propagation to new areas rests on their ability to keep up optimal ‘tropical conditions’ in their brood nest both in the cold and in the heat. Honeybee colonies behave like ‘superorganisms’ where individuals work together to promote reproduction of the colony. Social cooperation has developed strongly in thermal homeostasis, which guarantees a fast and constant development of the brood. We here report on the cooperation of individuals in reaction to environmental variation to achieve thermal constancy of 34–36 °C. The measurement of body temperature together with bee density and in-hive microclimate showed that behaviours for hive heating or cooling are strongly interlaced and differ in their start values. When environmental temperature changes, heat production is adjusted both by regulation of bee density due to migration activity and by the degree of endothermy. Overheating of the brood is prevented by cooling with water droplets and increased fanning, which start already at moderate temperatures where heat production and bee density are still at an increased level. This interlaced change and onset of different thermoregulatory behaviours guarantees a graded adaptation of individual behaviour to stabilise the temperature of the brood.

Abstract Gustav Hugo and the Göttingen student riots 1809/10. This paper deals with legal transplants during the Napoleonic era in Germany. Among the many changes introduced in the French ‘model kingdom’ of Westphalia, founded in 1806, were the introduction of the Code Napoléon and a complete reorganization of the judiciary. One of the institutions severely affected by these developments was the venerable University of Göttingen with its ancient privileges and royal prerogatives. The famous Romanist und founder of the Historical School, Gustav Hugo, was at its helm during the most turbulent phase of this reorganization. His achievements as vice rector are the subject of the second part of the paper.

Abstract:
Species composition, richness, and relative abundance of the communities of Calliphoridae, Muscidae, and Fanniidae in Córdoba city, Argentina was assessed, and how these characteristics are affected by seasonal and anthropogenic conditions was studied. The study was carried out in thirteen sites with various levels of urbanization during 2014 and 2015, comparing two seasons: the warmer-wet summer and the cold-dry winter. Adult flies were collected in each site using two traps baited with hydrated bone meal. A total of 1683 flies were collected, belonging to twelve genera and 22 species. Several of the species collected are relevant to forensic sciences. The most frequent species were Hydrotaea aenescens (Muscidae) and Fannia fusconotata (Fanniidae). No differences in necrophagous fly richness or relative abundances between the central urban sites and the periphery suburban sites were observed; however, richness was significantly correlated with local (250 m buffer area) built-up density. Species composition differed between the urban and suburban sites. Seasonal differences were also detected: the relative abundances per species were more even in the summer. Dissimilarities in the assemblages were mainly due to differences in the relative abundances of some species, reflecting their adaptability to landscapes with different degree of urbanization. Regardless of season or urbanization density, species richness and effective number of species were higher in traps placed in the sun as opposed to shade. Taken together, these results suggest that in Córdoba city both landscape and local factors explain variations in the necrophagous fly community.

Abstract:
The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to delineate cortical networks that are activated when objects or spatial locations encoded either visually (visual encoding group, n = 10) or haptically (haptic encoding group, n = 10) had to be retrieved from long-term memory. Participants learned associations between auditorily presented words and either meaningless objects or locations in a 3-D space. During the retrieval phase one day later, participants had to decide whether two auditorily presented words shared an association with a common object or location. Thus, perceptual stimulation during retrieval was always equivalent, whereas either visually or haptically encoded object or location associations had to be reactivated. Moreover, the number of associations fanning out from each word varied systematically, enabling a parametric increase of the number of reactivated representations. Recall of visual objects predominantly activated the left superior frontal gyrus and the intraparietal cortex, whereas visually learned locations activated the superior parietal cortex of both hemispheres. Retrieval of haptically encoded material activated the left medial frontal gyrus and the intraparietal cortex in the object condition, and the bilateral superior parietal cortex in the location condition. A direct test for modality-specific effects showed that visually encoded material activated more vision-related areas (BA 18/19) and haptically encoded material more motor and somatosensory-related areas. A conjunction analysis identified supramodal and material-unspecific activations within the medial and superior frontal gyrus and the superior parietal lobe including the intraparietal sulcus. These activation patterns strongly support the idea that code-specific representations are consolidated and reactivated within anatomically distributed cell assemblies that comprise sensory and motor processing systems.

Abstract:
Remarks on the problems associated with the inculturation of the Napoleonic Code in the Kingdom of Poland — doubts concerning Article 530A serious problem can arise when a society has to deal with regulations not adapted to its internal relations, regulations that have been imposed on that society. Such a situation occurred in Poland in the early nineteenth century in connection with the introduction of the Napoleonic Code within the territory of the Duchy of Warsaw. This generated a lot of controversy, not only among members of the Council of State, but also among wealthy and lesser nobility as well as Catholic clergy. The state was characterised by numerous remnants of feudalism. The conditions, when it came to both social and economic relations, were different than those in France. Consequently, the provisions of the Code referring to property were not fully applicable in practice. After the fall of the Duchy of Warsaw the Napoleonic Code remained in force in the Kingdom of Poland and the Free City of Kraków. However, it still had many opponents in the Kingdom of Poland. In the end there emerged a concept of reform of property law, with one of its points being a change in the provisions guaranteeing inferior owners a possibility of redeeming their obligations. Such a right was guaranteed by Article 530 of the Code, which could lead to dominium utile or inferior ownership being transformed into dominium plenum or full ownership. A draft amendment was prepared by the Legislative Deputation and then adopted by the parliament on 13 June 1825. The inculturation of the Code in the Kingdom of Poland, a country on a lower level of socio-economic development than France, was doomed to failure. While in the Duchy of Warsaw the Napoleonic Code was fictitiously used in practice, as it were, in the Kingdom of Poland legislative work was undertaken to change civil law and adapt it to the conditions in the country.

Abstract:
This dissertation was an analysis of the root and proximate causes of the September 2002 civil war in Côte d’Ivoire. The central question of this study was: Why did Côte d’Ivoire, which was relatively stable under President Houphouët-Boigny, suddenly begin to experience political violence in the 1990s and an explosion in 2002? Côte d’Ivoire was an interesting case because it was stable for a long period of time, apparently making it an infertile ground for conflict. It was also interesting for comparative purposes because of the fact that several states in West Africa (for instance, Benin, Togo, and Ghana) have experienced military coups but not have civil wars. Finally, this case was an opportunity to revisit the debate on the causes of civil wars in the African context. Chapter one has outlined the entire dissertation project and contextualized the analysis that follows in the subsequent chapters. Chapter two has reviewed the literature on civil wars in general, identified the different types of civil wars, and the type the Ivoiran war is. Chapter three has examined the domestic and international political economy as a source of the civil violence in Côte d’Ivoire. Chapter four has examined the role of ethnicity and region as identities of the war, while chapter five has analyzed the role of the foreign relations in the civil war, as well as the regional political context. Chapter six has distinguished between the root and proximate causes of the Ivoirian civil war, made judgments about the relative weight of the various causes, and the extent to which the weight of the causes can be measured. The study found that the “Ivoirité” was the most important trigger of the civil war in Côte d’Ivoire. The overall conclusion of my dissertation was that the September 2002 crisis in that country was a political crisis which occured in the context of a political reform. It first started with succession problems in 1993 followed by the controversial elections in 1995 and 2000. Later, this electoral politics spread beyond electoral issues, namely citizenship matters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Robert Louis Stevenson, Collaboration, and the Construction of the Late-Victorian Author argues that understanding literary collaboration is essential to understanding Stevenson’s writings. Stevenson often collaborated with family and friends, sometimes acknowledged, and sometimes not. Early collaborations include three plays with his friend W. E. Henley. Later, he and his wife Fanny co-authored a volume of linked stories, More New Arabian Nights, also titled The Dynamiter (1885). Fanny also contributed to other work that did not bear her name, significantly the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and he drew on her diaries for his Pacific writings. He collaborated most extensively with his stepson, Lloyd Osbourne, with whom he wrote three novels: The Wrong Box (1889), The Wrecker (1892), and The Ebb-Tide (1894). Stevenson’s collaborations with Osbourne typify the critical problem my project addresses. Like Fanny Stevenson’s, Osbourne’s literary reputation has not been notable. Furthermore, there is evidence that Stevenson’s collaborations with Osbourne became frustrating. The core question this book addresses is this: why would this famous and successful author of Scottish literature practice a creative process that burdened him with inexpert collaborators? The answer to this question can be found in Stevenson’s novels, essays and plays, which dramatize the process of collaboration. Stevenson creates an alternate narrative of what it means to write—one that challenges commonly held assumptions about the celebrity cult of the author in Victorian literature, and notions of authorship more generally.

The global encounter continues apace. Not only are American evangelicals fanning out throughout the world, but immigrants are moving into the United States. Some come with hopes of revitalizing the American church. Though underreported because of its origin among nonwhite populations, New England has been the home of a spiritual awakening called the “quiet revival.” Tightened borders and persistent racial separation limit immigrant influence at present. But the synergy of the Immigration Act of 1965, the Evangelical Immigration Roundtable, and the southernization of global Christianity is accelerating the global reflex as 2045, the year the United States may become a minority-majority nation, approaches.

Abstract:
Sibling love in the relationship between Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn has become recognized in recent years as one of the most important formational aspects of their lives and music. Based on the wider publication of the letters and music of both composers, we have come to realize just how much each influenced the other. However, a few questions have remained unanswered regarding the nature of that relationship and the almost indescribably intense intellectual bond they shared. Using interdisciplinary methodologies provided by kinship studies and drawing extensively on Fanny’s correspondence, this chapter provides social context for understanding just how unusual the two siblings’ marriages were for the time and what that can tell us about their artistic relationship. The chapter introduces a new term, siberoticism, and tackles the meaning behind the strange letter in which Fanny tells Felix that he exerts a ‘daemonic’ influence over her.

Abstract:
The subject of this chapter, Fanny Hensel’s Lied in D♭ major for piano solo, Op. 8, No. 3, might seem an anomalous choice for a volume devoted to the composer’s texted Lieder. But one could readily advance the argument that, like Schubert, Hensel was at her core a naturally gifted song composer who gave as free a rein to lyrical impulses in her purely instrumental music as she did in setting the verses of her favorite poets—Goethe, Tieck, Eichendorff, and Heine. Some of her piano pieces, which she typically titled Lieder or Klavierlieder, raise the question as to whether particular poetic sources lay behind their inspiration. Perhaps the most enigmatic of these examples is Op. 8, No. 3, which, when published posthumously in 1850, appeared with the title Lied, to which was added in parentheses “Lenau.” This chapter takes into account the sixteen Lenau settings composed by Hensel and her brother between 1839 and 1847, and considers whether Op. 8, No. 3 might be linked to specific verses of Lenau, or might offer, perhaps, a musical portrait of the poet, who suffered a mental collapse in 1844.

Abstract:
The impact of gender on freedom is vividly conveyed by Fanny Hensel’s letter to her cousin Marianne from the Saint Gotthard Pass in 1822, on a family trip: I spent a day . . . I’ll keep forever in my heart, and will remember with emotion for a long time to come. . . . [I] was observing, on the Italian border, the finest, most gracious, and pleasant scene that man can imagine when destiny cried out to me: so far, and no further! . . . If I had been a young lad of sixteen yesterday, my God! I would have had to fight against committing some great folly.” As Felix’s career acquired an international perspective, Fanny craved his descriptions of foreign parts. The motif of travel was threaded through her life—whether as reality, dream, or vicarious experience. Also threaded through her life was her production of songs belonging to the categories of “songs of travel,” portraying journeying, wandering, and remote locations, whether reached or imagined. Immersed in such texts, Hensel was free to “travel” in her mind’s eye. This chapter offers close analytical and critical readings of the words and music of songs such as Hensel’s “Schwanenlied,” Op. 1, No. 1, “Gondellied,” Op. 1, No. 6, and “Bergeslust,” Op. 10, No. 5, in an effort to illuminate how the Lied (as a small, apparently enclosed genre) allowed Hensel to widen the horizons beyond her enclosed life.

Abstract:
It is well known that among the three classes of the PRAM models, namely, CRCW, CREW, and EREW, the CRCW models are the weakest, in the sense that, they permit concurrent read/write by processors. Accordingly, algorithms on the CRCW model mainly concentrate on the core computations without much ado about data access. Consequently, this model, at least in principle, allows for the design of the fastest algorithm for a problem. It is intriguing to ask how fast prefixes can be computed on the CRCW models. Since CRCW models are equivalent to the unbounded fan-in circuits (refer to Chapter 2), the task of developing the fastest algorithms for the prefix problems is pursued in the context of the unbounded fan-in circuits. Recall from Chapter 2, that while the standard measures, such as, size and depth are still used to quantify the goodness of unbounded fanin circuits, the size of the circuit is measured by the total number of edges incident on all of its operation nodes, instead of by the number of operations nodes. It turns out that the size and depth of unbounded fanin circuits for computing prefixes, depends critically on the structure of the underlying semigroup from which the input elements are drawn. The principal result of this concluding Chapter may be stated as follows: There exists unbounded fan-in parallel prefix circuits of constant depth and polynomial size if, and only if, the underlying semigroup is group free. The proof of this result involves a very clever synthesis of a number of ideas drawn from different directions — structure of group free semigroups, their relations to a special class of regular sets, called non-counting regular sets, the relation of this latter class of regular sets to yet another class of regular sets defined by star-free regular expressions, and the design of a special class of finite state deterministic automata called RS machines that accept star-free regular expressions. In this context, it is convenient to define the notion of small circuits as the class of circuits with constant depth and polynomial size.

Abstract:
The Epilogue briefly peers into Mormonism’s unfolding relationship with American culture, suggesting that the story of Mormons and musical theater might well be a fitting encapsulation of the American interception of modernity. Musicals and Mormons have come a long way since their rootedness in Jacksonian principles; their regional genesis quickly fanned out to become immense global expressions of American values. In the meantime, America changed. What was once ideal and reputable has become goofy and outmoded, and Broadway and Mormonism have been forced to pay for their naive pasts with cynicism and guffaws. The musical theater industry opted to change its image by aggressively appropriating popular music genres. Mormon leaders have chosen a more passive response, having faith that stasis will eventually reveal the radical qualities of Mormon ideals. As a result, musical theater has begun to escape Mormonism as its once-familiar venue for practicing its theology of voice. Book of Mormon is one example of this fallout--its message both a condemnation and an invitation to become something better. In the end, the tale of Mormons and musicals is another story about how new ways of sounding create opportunities for other ways of living.

Abstract:
This chapter traces the progress towards publication of Keats’s collection which eventually appeared in 1820, its title page reading, ‘LAMIA, ISABELLA, THE EVE OF ST AGNES, AND OTHER POEMS. | BY JOHN KEATS, AUTHOR OF ENDYMION || LONDON: PRINTED FOR TAYLOR AND HESSEY, 1820’. Stung by the savage reviews and commercial failure of his previous efforts, Poems (1817) published on 10 March, 1817, and Endymion: A Poetic Romance published in early May, 1818, Keats was understandably disheartened when contemplating further publications. However, by September 1819 he was, according to Woodhouse, writing to the publisher John Taylor, willing ‘to publish the Eve of St Agnes & Lamia immediately: but Hessey told him it could not answer to do so now’. On 10 October he had spoken of writing ‘Two or three’ poems in which he wishes ‘to diffuse the colouring of St Agnes eve throughout a Poem in which Character and Sentiment would be the figures to such drapery’. He hopes that writing such poems ‘in the course of the next six 3 years, would be a famous gradus ad Parnassum altissimum—...’. Writing on 17 November, 1819, he asserted ‘I have come to a determination not to publish Anything I have now ready written’, a corpus which in fact included all the poems which were to be included in 1820. The definite decision to put together the ‘Lamia’ collection was made between the date of the letter to Taylor (17 November, 1819) and a relatively buoyant letter to his sister Fanny written on 20 December, 1819. The collection was published in late June, 1820. The result was one of the greatest poetry collections of all time, though it has rarely been considered in this integrated light since editors and critics invariably consider each poem in the chronology of its composition rather than their contribution to a unity which is greater than the sum of the parts.

Abstract:
Experimental results of the thermal and hydraulic performances of silicon-based, low aspect ratio micro-pin-fin cold plates under cross flow conditions are reported. The pins were both circular and square in shape with dimensions (diameter for circular and sides for square) ranging from 50 to 150 μm. The test chip contained 20 integral 75×75 μm temperature sensors which were used to determine the thermal resistance (K W-1) of the cold plates. The experiments were conducted using water, over a Reynolds number (Re) ranging from 40 to 1000. The data show that the average Nusselt number (Nu) based on the fin diameter varies as Re0.84 for Re < 100 and as Re0.73 for Re > 100, where Re is the Reynolds number based on maximum velocity and the fin diameter. Analysis of the Fanning friction factor (f) data shows that f varies as Re-1.35 for Re < 100 and as Re-0.1 for Re > 100.

Abstract:
Abstract This work aims to combine the effects of the near wall and core flow disturbance by proposing novel wing-shaped tabulators. The new tabulators are fabricated with the fused deposition modeling (3D printing) technology. To explore their effects on detailed flow fields, local temperature distributions, and pressure drops in a two-pass square channel, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), Infrared Thermography (IR camera), and pressure transducer measurements are performed. The tabulator pitch, clearance, and truncation gap ratio based on the channel hydraulic diameter of 45.5 mm are respectively fixed at 0.7, 0.25 and 0.06. Varied parameters include tabulator attack angle (α = 10°, 15°, 20°, and 30°), maximum thickness to chord line ratio (t/C = 0.08, 0.13, 0.16, 0.20, and 0.23), and bulk Reynolds number (Re = 5,000–20,000). From the experimental results and flow parameters analyzed, the dimensionless spanwise-averaged mean transverse velocity and cross-sectionally averaged vorticity magnitude are identified to be the most relevant ones to spanwise-averaged local Nusselt number ratio in the first and second pass. Among all examined cases and previous data with Fanning friction factor ratio (f¯/fo) less than 50, the case with α = 20° and t/C = 0.20 attains the highest thermal performance factor and overall Nusselt number ratio (Nu¯/Nuo) up to 1.68 and 5.36, respectively. Furthermore, empirical correlations of Nu¯/Nuo and f¯/fo versus α, t/C, and Re are proposed.

Abstract:
This paper presents a method to assess compressor mass flow, pressure line and stability, including blow-off lines behavior, during a heavy duty gas turbine (GT) start up. A Company proprietary compressor mean line analysis 1-dimensional code (C1D) has been calibrated on 3D RANS calculations and matched with a 1D Fanno model to simulate the compressor behavior during GT start-up; discharge compressor pressure and secondary air system boundary conditions are provided by filed test data. C1D is based on correlations tuned with available CFD and experimental data; within the present work the code has been validated with experimental data at low mechanical speed too, so that it can be used in such applications where conventional CFD analyses are most likely to fail. In this paper C1D is used to analyze the compressor start-up characteristic from idle to full speed no load operation. Pressure rise along the compressor and blow-off line mass flow are compared and validated throughout a field test campaign. Finally the method developed is applied to an evolutionary compressor in order to analyze how the stage-wise load distribution varies with mechanical speed and blow-off mass flow.

Abstract:
The present work deals with the design of compact wavy heat exchangers, where high values of heat transfer area per unit volume are looked for in order to reduce size and increase efficiency. A numerical investigation of a rectangular cross-sectional shape geometry, with duct aspect ratio of 7.3, and a corrugation angle of 145° is here proposed. The Reynolds numbers (based on the duct hydraulic diameter) range from 300 to 5000. The numerical analysis is performed by means of a finite volume commercial CFD code. Laminar and Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (U-RANS) approaches are applied to a three-dimensional fluid domain over a single module with periodic conditions, respectively for, lower (<1000) and higher (≥1000) Reynolds numbers. Mean velocity and temperature fields are obtained. The average values of Fanning friction factor and Nusselt number are compared with experimental data from literature for the same geometry operating at the same Reynolds number range. For the evaluation of heat transfer quantities obtained in the numerical study the analogy between Sherwood and Nusselt number is used. The numerical results agree with experimental data, by showing the capability of laminar and U-RANS two-equation approach, via RNG model, to capture the mean fluid flow including the Taylor-Gortler instability that appear at low Reynolds numbers. The qualitative comparison of heat results shows an agreement between experimental and numerical data, whereas the extension to quantitative comparison is limited by some deficiencies in experimental correlation for mass/heat transfer analogy.

Abstract:
In consideration of the environmental degradation and global scarcity of coking coal resource, substituting coke with coal and improving the gas utilization are the developing trends of ironmaking technology. Oxygen blast furnace, an ironmaking technology with top gas recycling, is most likely to be used in large-scale industrial manufacture considering its advantages of high productivity, high pulverized coal injection rate, low coke rate, high top gas calorific value, etc. The purpose of this paper is to make a little contribution to this technology on burden descending behavior in the metallurgical process. The results would provide reference for the design and operation of oxygen blast furnace. In the complex metallurgical processes with countercurrent multi-phase reactions, solid material motion plays important roles in the process since it determines the path and the residence time of the solid reactants as well as the stress distribution. The continuum model is often employed in the kinetic process analysis for its simplicity and low computational load. In this study, a viscous flow model based on the Navier-Stokes equation was developed to investigate the behavior of solid flow in oxygen blast furnace. A three dimensional experimental apparatus was constructed to observe burden descending behavior. According to concerned experimental results, it show that the interaction between the burden and the wall is not significant in shaft zone of the furnace. The descending burden maintains initial pattern until it reaches the lower part where the size of the cross section starts to reduce and the strong friction appears obviously in the tracked materials. Consequently, slip boundary condition with the Fanning equation was used for computations to describe the friction between solid flow and the wall or the dead zone. In addition, the position and the gas flow rate of the upper tuyeres were investigated. It was demonstrated that if the upper tuyeres are higher than the top of the belly, the position will strongly influence the solid flow distribution. Thus, gas velocity must be limited in a proper range to keep the solid flow falling down smoothly. By analysis of various solid viscosities, it is shown that solid flow patterns are not sensitive to solid viscosity within certain range.

Abstract:
Safety relief valve vents in power plants are typically sized by treating steam flow as a perfect gas flow. ANSI B31.1 [1] and an ASME paper by G. S. Liao [2] provided the power industry with the guidance for using this approximation. The perfect gas approximation of the steam flow furnished the engineers with the simple formulations currently available in References 1 and 2. Modern computational techniques allow the accuracy of vent sizing calculations to be improved by eliminating the perfect gas assumption. The following methodology uses ASME steam property tables [3] assuming adiabatic flow through one or more constant area pipe sections connected by reducers. Compressible flow Fanno-Line differential equations for continuity, momentum, energy, and state [4] are generalized to handle the steam thermodynamic properties. These equations are simultaneously solved numerically to determine the flow thermodynamic state at any location along the vent. The differential equations are integrated utilizing steam thermodynamic functions [3], in conjunction with the Math-Cad’s Runga-Kutta method [5]. Both choking and non-choking conditions are considered at the vent exit. Closed discharge backpressures and open discharge blowback are addressed. Amendment to the ASME ANSI B31.1 Power Piping Code [1], to include the differential equations formulation for the constant area adiabatic steam flow is also proposed.

Abstract:
The power generation and energy market scenarios are requiring the power generation plants to fulfill more flexible operations respect to the recent past. One of the main concerns of plant operators is the lowering of minimum load at which the machines can be exercised while respecting the pollution limits. A strategy to improve minimum turndown capability by reducing the minimum environmental load of heavy duty axial gas turbines is here presented: it is based on the use of the compressor air bleeding lines (blow-off lines). The described technical development activities are based on the numerical modeling of blow-off lines and bleeding compressor sections; these preliminary tasks have been followed by on-field plant testing. The blow-off lines modeling reserves a particular regard, due to the somehow non-usual fluid dynamics involved. A Fanno flow 1D approach has been adopted to properly model the bleeding lines fluid flow whereas full 3D numerical solutions have been developed to get a better insight of the bleeding plenums and of the line sector including the valve. In addition, the gas turbine components off-design behavior and the overall performances are computed by the Ansaldo modular simulation code. Numerical analysis and performed field tests are here presented and results are compared, showing a good agreement, in accord to the simplified model adopted. Additional comparisons with different alternative strategies are finally presented in terms of gas turbine power and excess air variation. The described technique by blow-off lines opening shows to be able to fulfill the required task by incrementing the plant operative flexibility and guaranteeing safe plant operation. The technique drawbacks are a gas turbine slightly lower efficiency and the lower output flue gas temperature, whose relative importance have to evaluate by the plant operators. At present the long term sustainability of the new operative condition is the object of a deeper and longer field testing phase.
