Abstract:
Coleridge’s place in conservative and liberal traditions of thought is assessed in Chapter 9. In the decades after his death, Coleridge was regarded as a conservative. Mill saw him as a ‘Tory philosopher’; he viewed Coleridgean conservatism as some have seen Burke’s, as a Second, not Counter-, Enlightenment view. Burke does not figure as a conservative in Mill’s discussion. However, late nineteenth-century constructors of an ideology of English conservatism preferred to appeal to Burke’s scepticism about reason, while Coleridge’s philosophical prestige was waning. Abstract:
This article examines the issues of plagiarism in the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It explains that the sources of Coleridge's writings have long fascinated critics. Coleridge's kindest critics have disentangled the components of his eclectically derivative corpus and compulsively devious practice, while his unkindest critic, Norman Fruman, has reacted against the canonical sentimentality that has transmogrified the real Coleridge into the ‘Da Vinci’ of literature. The article suggests that Coleridge crossed a qualitative line, that intangible border which separates plagiarists from the o

Abstract:
This article examines the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge relevant to philosophy. It suggests that although Coleridge did not leave behind an original, coherent philosophical system or a single finished book which could be called a philosophical work, he has somehow acquired the reputation of being the most philosophical of the British Romantic poets. The article discusses doubts concerning Coleridge's qualifications as an original philosophical thinker. Renée Wellek, for example, remarked on the fundamental weakness of his thought– incoherence and indistinctness–and considered the study of C

Abstract:
This article discusses issues relevant to critical writing about the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It suggests that critical analysis of Coleridge's works is problematic because his poems bristle with interpretive puzzles and his prose has provided a problematic base for modern interpretation itself. The article argues that Coleridge wrote the most obscure yet the most influential critical paragraph in English literature.

Chapter 6 begins the section on Coleridge’s contemplative worldviews, and chronologically follows Coleridge’s lifetime fascination with medicine as its focus shifted from anatomy, the analysis of structures, towards physiology, elucidating the processes of life. He believed that all sciences should progress from a static to a dynamic worldview, making them worthy of contemplation, feeding Reason rather than just understanding. Coleridge met Humphry Davy, whose dynamical researches on laughing gas and electrochemistry delighted him. Coleridge became a critic of science as well as literature, re

Abstract:
This article examines the influence of biblical and classical literature on the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. It discusses Coleridge's lifelong immersion in biblical and classical literature, and mentions that Table Talk gives some indication of how frequently and eagerly Coleridge spoke about biblical and classical literature at his Thursday-evening soirées. The article evaluates Coleridge's influence on his younger contemporaries, especially as it relates to how the ancient world was understood and interpreted.
