Born in 1786, Edward Coles came of age as Americans attempted to define this nation's character. Convinced of his generation's responsibility to ensure the survival of the republican experiment, Coles emerged from the College of William and Mary determined to assume a position of authority. Unlike most of his contemporaries, however, he left Williamsburg persuaded that slavery was morally and ideologically wrong. Burdened by a conflict between a sense of duty to serve his nation and a commitment to eliminate slavery, Coles embarked on a public career that took him from the seat of national power in Washington City, to the rustic frontier of Illinois, and, finally, to the cosmopolitan city of Philadelphia.;Throughout his journey, his antislavery sensibility forced him to redefine his claim to authority. While serving as President James Madison's private secretary, Cole's participated in a national political culture that utilized elite networks to accomplish political business. Although he exercised considerable influence, he remained troubled by the slavery issue and decided to immigrate to the frontier, where he emancipated his enslaved property. to Coles's dismay, Illinois' commitment to freedom proved to be illusory. as he attempted to transform, his environment, he adopted democratic political tactics and, as governor, employed them to defeat a movement to legalize slavery. Those efforts, however, left him disillusioned with public service. Unwilling to accept his role as a displaced frontier elite, Coles moved east and settled in Philadelphia. There, the political crisis of the 1850s drew him back into the public arena. Determined to prevent a sectional crisis, Coles represented himself as the authority on the legacy of the American Revolution. Highlighting his intimate relationship with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, he attempted to recast the founding generation as antislavery statesmen who would have been outraged by the political developments of the antebellum era. Tragically, his efforts were unsuccessful and the nation plunged into civil war.;Edward Coles was emblematic of a generation of Americans who were alarmed by the democratic changes surrounding them, yet unable to prevent the erosion of elite authority those transformations engendered.

The role of structure and tectonics in the formation of hydrothermal ore deposits and the localization of high-grade mineralization associated with fractures is well documented. In this study we have characterized the structural setting associated with uranium mineralization in the Coles Hill uranium deposit by relating the observed metamorphic and structural features (mylonitic foliation and fractures) to regional tectonic activity.
Drill cores and outcrops observed in this study show that NE/SW oriented fractures appear to be related to Mesozoic movement along the Chatham Fault. NW/SE oriented fractures cross cut and offset the NE/SW oriented fractures by1 to 2 cm and therefore post-date the NE/SW oriented fractures. NW/SE fracture orientations and parallel to the NW/SE regional cross faults and are suggested to relate to the formation of the cross faults during post Triassic basin inversion. Uranium mineralization is located within horizontal to shallowly dipping fractures suggesting uplift and erosion to form possible tension veins.
The cross faults with NW/SE orientations created pathways in which uranium bearing hydrothermal fluids could migrate from the Triassic basin shales westward into the adjacent highly fractured crystalline rocks, precipitating uranium due to oxidation-reduction reactions.Master of Science

An evaluation of the geochemistry of the environment prior to large-scale changes enables scientists and other stakeholders to assess both baseline conditions and the potential impact of those changes to the environment. One area in which documentation of pre-development geochemistry is particularly important is in the exploitation of ore deposits. Ore deposits consist of concentrations of elements or minerals that are enriched enough to be of potential economic value. Their unusual geochemistry often leaves a signature on the environment that can both aid in location an economic resource and present environmental management challenges during its lifecycle. Coles Hill, Virginia, represents one such site. The Coles Hill property is the location of uranium-enriched rock, commonly referred to as the Coles Hill uranium deposit.
This dissertation outlines study design, sampling, and statistical analysis methods that can be used in the geochemical characterization of a potential resource extraction site. It presents three studies on geoenvironmental media at Coles Hill. The first study discusses sampling strategies and statistical analysis to address variability in geology, hydrology and climate for baseline assessment and presents an example of such an assessment at Coles Hill. Results suggest a localized environmental impact of the deposit but that differences in bedrock geology within the area surrounding the deposit could also be responsible for some of the variation. This study also emphasizes the importance of consideration of data below analytical detection limits and describes methods for doing so. The second study compares the geochemistry of soil samples collected at Coles Hill with reference data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey using multivariate statistical techniques. Differences are used to suggest potential pathfinder elements such as light rare earth elements to aid in exploration for similar deposits. The third study uses multivariate statistical analysis to examine differences among rocks, soils, and stream sediments to infer important geochemical processes involved in weathering of the deposit. Overall, the results of these studies can aid in the development of future environmental site studies at Coles Hill and elsewhere.Ph. D.

Presented in this thesis is a case study of two study watersheds located in south central Virginia. For each, a HEC-HMS event-based hydrologic model was constructed to simulate the rainfall-runoff response from the Probable Maximum Storm (PMS), the theoretical worst-case meteorological event that is capable of occurring over a particular region. The primary goal of these simulations was to obtain discharge hydrographs associated with the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) at key locations in each of the watersheds. These hydrographs were subsequently used to develop flood inundation maps of the study areas and to characterize sediment transport phenomena in the study reaches under severe flooding conditions.
To build the hydrologic basin models, ArcHydro, HEC-GeoHMS and ArcGIS were employed to assimilate the substantial amount of input data and to extract the pertinent modeling parameters required for the selected simulation methods. In this, the SCS Loss and Transform Methods, along with the Muskingum Routing Method, were adopted for the HEC-HMS simulations.
Once completed, the basin models were calibrated through a comparison of simulated design storm flows to frequency discharge estimates obtained with regional regression techniques and a flood frequency analysis. The models were then used to simulate their respective PMS events, which were developed following recommendations from the Hydrometeorological Branch of the National Weather Service and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

A flood inundation study is presented for a watershed located in south central Virginia. A HEC-RAS hydrodynamic model of the main river network was developed to assess the impact of a number of hydrologic events, including the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF), in the area of interest. The primary goal of the study was to transform discharge hydrographs produced by HEC-HMS, an event-based hydrologic model, into water surface elevations and flood inundation spatial extents.Initially, a river terrain model was constructed using data from publically available sources and filed survey campaigns. HEC-GeoRAS and ArcGIS were used to document and integrate the considerable amount of data required for building the model. Then, a calibration process was performed using stage-discharge predictor curves. The HEC-RAS unsteady flow component was employed for routing the discharge hydrographs through the modeled river network. Flood inundation maps, as well as longitudinal water surface elevation and channel velocity profiles were generated for the study reaches.
As part of the flood inundation study, an uncertainty quantification analysis was carried out on the boundary roughness of the floodplains. The objective was to measure the extent to which flood inundated areas, water surface elevations, and channel velocities were influenced by variations on this empirically-based model coefficient.
Finally, the impact of various hydraulic characteristics of the modeled river on the sediment transport process is examined. This characterization is intended to provide a better understanding of a subsequent sediment transport modeling effort to be performed under severe flooding conditions.

Lessonia trabeculata es una de las macroalgas pardas más importantes
de la costa central y sur del Perú. Se distribuye principalmente entre los 3 y 15
metros de profundidad, donde forma bosques submareales que albergan un
importante número de especies. En el presente estudio, se analiza el grado de disturbio producido sobre
las praderas submareales de L. trabeculata y las causas subyacentes detrás de
su recuperación luego de la incursión de aguas cálidas, como consecuencia del
fenómeno de El Niño 1997-1998, en Punta Coles, Ilo (17° 42’ S). Debido a que
se extiende a lo largo de casi 11 km de litoral de Ilo, en Moquegua, el valor
ecológico y potencial económico de este recurso resulta destacable. El Niño
1997-1998 afectó drásticamente las praderas de “aracanto” en Ilo, lo que produjo
una mortalidad casi total de dicho ecosistema, clave para los procesos
ecológicos de los fondos duros submareales. Pequeños remanentes
permanecieron a mayores profundidades, a partir de los cuales se podría haber
iniciado la recuperación de las “praderas”. A pesar de la importancia ecológica de L. trabeculata, existe muy poca información sobre su dinámica y estructura poblacional, sus tasas de crecimiento
y las respuestas de esta especie ante los cambios ambientales durante El Niño.
En la presente tesis se aborda la recuperación de una pradera de L.
trabeculata a través del seguimiento, mediante marcaje, de un grupo de
esporofitos juveniles asentados inmediatamente después del evento, así como
también de plantas adultas que lograron sobrevivir al evento.
Asimismo, se discuten los procesos ecológicos involucrados en la
mortalidad y recuperación de los bosques de macroalgas pardas, como
consecuencia de un evento de El Niño de magnitud extraordinaria, y se dan

The Coles Hill uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County, Virginia represents the largest unmined uranium resource in the United States, with an estimated resource of 110 million pounds of U3O8 in place with a cutoff grade of 0.025 wt% U3O8. The deposit is localized along a geologic unit that parallels the Chatham Fault, which separates the Triassic Danville Basin to the east from the older crystalline rocks to the west. The location of the Chatham Fault is important to understanding distribution of ore and for developing an effective mine plan. In this study the Chatham Fault location has been inferred from ground conductivity and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. Anomalies in the data are consistent with previously mapped fault locations based on drillhole and geophysical data, such as gravity and magnetic surveys, collected in the 1980s. These results confirm that the strike of the Chatham Fault is approximately N40ºE and dips to the southeast with dip values ranging from 70º, in the northeast, to 50º, in the southwest.Master of Science

The last three decades have seen an increase in the severity and impact which disasters have had on society. This has necessitated a radical shift in thinking pertaining to the prevention and mitigation of the impact of hazards, in order to create more resilient communities and change the focus from managing disaster to reduce disaster risk. Developing more efficient disaster reduction strategies will not only save a substantial amount of money but save many lives as well.
Over the last two decades, a number of international conventions and conferences have taken place that have served as catalysts in shifting the emphasis from disaster management to disaster risk reduction. In seeking new ways to implement new disaster risk reduction strategies it has become increasingly apparent that children have a vital role to play within disaster risk reduction strategies. Children are excellent conduits of disaster risk information and can therefore create significant disaster risk awareness within their communities. It is therefore imperative that disaster risk reduction strategies should include the promotion of disaster risk awareness aimed at children.
To this end, a number of disaster risk reduction educational materials have been developed and implemented in countries around the world. However there seems to be a general lack of evidence showing the effectiveness of these interventions and whether they have contributed to the overall enhancement of community resilience and ultimately to disaster risk reduction. To be effective, disaster risk reduction school educational programmes must result in greater disaster resilience in communities.
This research aimed at critically analysing the disaster risk reduction educational programme for primary schools in the City of Tshwane in order to determine its effectiveness as a tool for disaster risk reduction. In addition, this research sought to draw a comparison in terms of disaster risk awareness, preparedness, mitigation and response knowledge amongst learners in the schools which implemented this programme against those schools which have not as yet implemented the programme. The South African disaster risk reduction legislative requirements was scrutinised in order to ascertain legislative requirements in terms of governing disaster risk management in South Africa.
After conducting a literature review and conducting focus groups and semi–structured interviews it was concluded that there is evidence that the school guide pack intervention instilled confidence in the learners about their knowledge of disaster risk reduction. In addition learners who had been taught from the school guide pack had a good understanding that they should specifically be aware of risks and hazards. The song was a feature in the school guide pack which received a very favourable response from all the learners. Learners who had been taught from the school guide pack had the knowledge that to be prepared they need to tell the community how to be safe, to tell their friends to be aware of risks and hazards and to know the emergency number. Learners in schools where the school guide pack was implemented all knew their local emergency number.
Three unexpected finding also came to the fore, namely evidence emerged that School B struggled with the implementation of the school guide pack. Secondly learners in School C displayed a good understanding of disaster risk reduction, despite the fact that School C had not implemented the school guide pack. Finally, learners from School D exhibited strong, underlying emotions when participating in the focus group. Lastly, a number of recommendations were made as to components and aspects which should be considered when developing disaster risk reduction educational material in order for it to be an effective method of disaster risk reduction and mitigation.
It was concluded that when implemented in isolation from additional disaster risk reduction activities, the City of Tshwane's Metropolitan Municipality primary schools programme, was not a sufficient tool for reducing disaster risk in the City of Tshwane. However if the disaster risk reduction primary school programme was combined with a well planned, Metropolitan wide, disaster risk reduction campaign which incorporated all spheres of the community, there is a much greater likelihood that disaster risk reduction would be achieved.Thesis (M. This study examines intersectionality and identity in rapper Jermaine Lamarr Cole’s studio album 4 Your Eyez Only. Through discourse analysis, the essay studies the representation of aspects of identity in the album, with a focus on gender, race, class and sexuality. The study also examines prosthetic memory in the album, with the intention of finding correlating narratives that create a general concensus of how society is viewed from marginalised groups in the US. The findings conclude that gender, race and class are expressed as the main buildingblocks for a characters identity in the album. It is telling that sexuality remains untouched in this regard. The reader is exclusively exposed to the normative heterosexual perspective, completely ignoring any notion of varied sexual orientations. Furthermore the findings conclude that J. Cole showcases a generally negative view on the govornment, as it is percieved as one of many instances keeping marginalised groups at the bottom of a societal foodchain

Development of a scientific basis for management of uranium bearing wastes and contaminants requires information from natural geologic systems. The following study of the Coles Hill uranium deposit and associated weathered zone constrains processes leading to the natural attenuation of uranium within an oxidizing, fluid rich environment typical of the eastern US. At the Coles Hill deposit fracture hosted, primary U(IV) bearing mineral assemblages formed during hydrothermal activity associated with Mesozoic faulting. The most abundant ore assemblage consists of coffinite and apatite, but uraninite-zeolite and uraninite-calcite assemblages are also present. Within the shallow bedrock there is a uranium redox transition where alteration of U(IV) minerals has produced secondary uranium minerals. Geochemical data suggests that the volume of rock containing this U(IV)/U(VI) transition is acting as a closed system with respect to uranium mass transport during oxidation. The dominant mechanism of uranium fixation within the oxidizing zone is the precipitation of Ba-U(VI) phosphates (meta-autunite group). Speciation and mineral stability calculations indicate that ground waters from the Coles Hill weathered zone are saturated with respect to Ba-meta-autunite and that this mineral is capable of buffering dissolved uranium concentrations to values lower than 20 parts per billion. U(VI) phosphates of the meta-autunite group are not stable in the vadose zone (soil pH ~ 4.5) at the Coles Hill site. In this zone uranium is associated with (Ba, Ca, Sr) aluminum phosphate of the crandallite group as well as with phosphate sorbed to iron oxy-hydroxide mineral coatings. Uranium leached from the vadose zone is reprecipitated as new meta-autunite minerals below the water table due to higher pH conditions of ~6.0 and relatively high activity ratios of dissolved phosphate to carbonate (e.g. log [H2PO4-/HCO3-] > -3). It is estimated that the U(VI) phosphates responsible for the natural attenuation of uranium at this site persist within the weathering zone for hundreds of thousands of years. Thus, the Coles Hill deposit represents an excellent natural laboratory for the study of uranium attenuation with potential applications for the design and implementation of cost effective remediation and containment strategies, such as soil amendments techniques and in-situ reactive barriers technologies.Ph. The problem being investigated is the historical situation relating to two independent MPs holding the balance of power in the Australian House of Representatives in 1940 and 1941. The two MPs, Arthur Coles and Alex Wilson, supported the conservative Menzies and Fadden governments before shifting their support (on October 3 1941) to the Labor Party led by Curtin. The procedure followed is the examination, in the form of a historical narrative, of primary evidence in private papers (such as Coles???s), analysis of Hansard (CPD), local and metropolitan newspapers. Also examined are references to the two independents in secondary literature. The key focus of interest will be the idea that chance or serendipity played a major role in achieving all the key outcomes which many Australians (and historians like Hasluck) often otherwise depict as the triumph of good sense within a supposedly non-problematic twoparty political system which self-selected the best possible leadership during time of war. Coles took over the seat of a popular Cabinet minister who had died in an air disaster. Coles???s and Wilson???s holding the balance of power was another extreme aberration, as no House of Representatives from 1906 to 1940, and none since, has not had either of the two party blocs (Labor and anti-Labor) without a majority. Hasluck, the most influential historian of Australian politics during the 1939-1945 war, viewed the fact of Coles???s and Wilson???s serendipity as evidence, in itself, of their wider historical, ideological and political irrelevance. The general results obtained by pursuing a critical historical narrative approach is that a strong counter-argument has been developed that suggests that Hasluck (and wider historical memory) has insufficiently valued as historical factors Coles???s and Wilson???s ideological aims. Coles was a representative of business progressivism and Wilson of agrarian socialism. The major conclusion reached is that Coles???s and Wilson???s wider aims led them to adopt the tactic of timing their shift to Labor so as to maximize their ideological influence on the Labor administration that would result whenever they decided to exercise their entirely serendipitously attained balance of power.

The Coles Hill uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County, VA, is the largest un-mined uranium deposit in the United States. The deposit is located in the Virginia Piedmont in a geologic unit located immediately west of the Chatham Fault, which separates the granitic rocks of the Virginia Piedmont to the west from the metasediments of the Danville Triassic basin to the east. Groundwater at the site flows through a complex interconnected network of fractures controlled by the geology and structural history of the site. In this study groundwater is characterized in a small study area just south of the main deposit. Methods used in this investigation include electrical resistivity profiling, bore hole logging, a pumping test, and age dating and water chemistry. In this thesis groundwater flow is confirmed to occur from the Piedmont crystalline rocks across the Chatham Fault and into the Triassic basin at the study area as evidenced by pumping test data and static water-level data from observation wells. Well logs have identified fractures capable of transmitting water in the granitic rocks of the Piedmont, the Triassic basin metasediments and the Chatham Fault but the largest quantities of flow appear to occur in the Triassic basin. A definable recharge area for the groundwater present at Coles Hill can not yet be determined due to the complexity of the fracture system, but age dating confirms that groundwater is composed of both young and old (>60 years) components, indicating that at least a portion of groundwater at Coles Hill originates from a more distant area.Master of Science

Neste trabalho temos como objeto de estudo o espa?o pol?tico dos debates entre os formadores ind?genas (professores e lideran?as) acerca do projeto de forma??o de seus docentes, na proposi??o e gest?o de um ensino escolar diferenciado. Em tais debates encontra-se manifesto o processo de constitui??o dos ?ndios enquanto sujeitos pol?ticos, reivindicando direitos s?cio-culturais e hist?ricos informadores do movimento ind?gena. Al?m disso, a ocorr?ncia de alguns dissensos nestes debates nos fizeram pensar na necessidade de, em alguns momentos, transcendermos a literalidade dos discursos, atentando para o n?o-dito e as subjetividades e intersubjetividades presentes nos processos de intera??o entre os sujeitos/atores/autores implicados. Here C1 C2. For a pair of binary codes fC1;C2g with C1 C2, let C(C1;C2) be the set of Z4-codes giving rise to this binary pair as de ned above. Our main goal is to describe the set C(C1;C2) using the binary pair of codes fC1;C2g. In Chapter 1, we give some preliminaries. In Chapter 2, we start with a general description of codes fC1;C2g which give cardinality of C(C1;C2). Then we show that C(C1;C2) ' C 1 Zn 2 =C2. The cohomology of C(C1;C2) is given in Section (2:2). We study the Hamming distance and the structure of repeated-root cyclic codes, and their generalizations to constacyclic and polycyclic codes, over finite fields and Galois rings. We develop a method to compute the Hamming distance of these codes. Our computation gives the Hamming distance of constacyclic codes of length $np^s$ in many cases. In particular, we determine the Hamming distance of all constacyclic, and therefore cyclic and negacyclic, codes of lengths p^s and 2p^s over a finite field of characteristic $p$. It turns out that the generating sets for the ambient space obtained by torsional degrees and strong Groebner basis for the ambient space are essentially the same and one can be obtained from the other.
In the second part of the thesis, we study matrix product codes. We show that using nested constituent codes and a non-constant matrix in the construction of matrix product codes with polynomial units is a crucial part of the construction. We prove a lower bound on the Hamming distance of matrix product codes with polynomial units when the constituent codes are nested. This generalizes the technique used to construct the record-breaking examples of Hernando and Ruano.
Contrary to a similar construction previously introduced, this bound is not sharp and need not hold when the constituent codes are not nested. We give a comparison of this construction with a previous one. We also construct new binary codes having the same parameters, of the examples of Hernando and Ruano, but non-equivalent to them.

La theorie des codes a longueur variable est nee des travaux de shannon sur l'information. Elle a ete developpee par schutzenberger dans les annees 60, et a sa suite par de nombreux chercheurs. Dans ce travail, nous etudions deux familles de codes, les codes prefixes et les codes a delai de dechiffrage borne qui les generalisent. Nous apportons une reponse a certaines des questions posees dans le livre theory of codes de j. Berstel et d. Perrin (1985). Nous etudions dans le chapitre 2 les ensembles de mots x et y dont le produit xy est un code prefixe maximal. Schutzenberger avait prouve que les ensembles x et y sont eux-memes des codes prefixes maximaux si le produit xy est non ambigu et x, y sont finis. Nous montrons que la deuxieme condition peut etre affaiblie, mais que la premiere est necessaire. Le contre-exemple construit est de taille impressionnante, mais cependant minimale au niveau du nombre de mots ainsi que du nombre de lettres. Le chapitre 3 rassemble plusieurs resultats sur les codes a delai de dechiffrage borne, montrant que des proprietes de maximalite connues sur les codes prefixes s'etendent a cette famille. En particulier, nous presentons un algorithme de plongement d'un code fini a delai de dechiffrage borne dans un code maximal rationnel ayant meme delai de dechiffrage. Spinal codes are a new class of rateless codes that enable wireless networks to cope with time-varying channel conditions in a natural way, without requiring any explicit bit rate selection. The key idea in the code is the sequential application of a pseudo-random hash function to the message bits, to produce a sequence of coded symbols for transmission. This encoding ensures that two input messages that differ in even one bit lead to very different coded sequences after the point at which they differ, providing good resilience to noise and bit errors. To decode spinal codes, we develop an approximate maximum-likelihood decoder, called the bubble decoder, which runs in time polynomial in the message size and achieves the Shannon capacity over both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and binary symmetric channel (BSC) models. The decoder trades off throughput for computation (hardware area or decoding time), allowing the decoder to scale gracefully with available hardware resources. Experimental results obtained from a software implementation of a linear-time decoder show that spinal codes achieve higher throughput than fixed-rate LDPC codes [11], rateless Raptor codes [35], and the layered rateless coding approach [8] of Strider [12], across a wide range of channel conditions and message sizes. An early hardware prototype that can decode at 10 Mbits/s in FPGA demonstrates that spinal codes are a practical construction.

New adaptive, iterative approaches to the decoding of block Turbo codes and multilevel codes are developed. Block Turbo codes are considered as they can readily provide high data rates, low decoding complexity and good performance. Multilevel codes are considered as they provide a moderate complexity approach to a high complexity code and can provide codes with good bandwidth efficiency.
The work develops two adaptive sub-optimal soft output decoding algorithms for block Turbo codes. One is based on approximation and the other on the distance properties of the component codes. They can be used with different codes, modulation schemes, channel conditions and in different applications without modification. Both approaches provide improved performance compared to previous approaches on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The approximation based adaptive algorithm is also investigated on the uncorrelated Rayleigh fiat fading channel and is shown to improve performance over previous approaches.
Multilevel codes are typically decoded using a multistage decoder (MSD) for complexity reasons. Each level passes hard decisions to subsequent levels. If the approximation based adaptive algorithm is used to decode component codes in a traditional MSD it improves performance significantly. Performance can be improved further by passing reliability (extrinsic) information to all previous and subsequent levels using an iterative MSD. A new iterative multistage decoding algorithm for multilevel codes is developed by treating the extrinsic information as a Gaussian random variable. If the adaptive algorithms are used in conjunction with iterative multistage decoding on the AWGN channel, then a significant improvement in performance is obtained compared to results using a traditional MSD.

La construction repose sur l'utilisation de codes de base de petites longueurs de rendement 1/2 assemblés en couches entre lesquelles sont insérées des permutations. Il est prouvé que l'auto-dualité est conservée par cette construction. De plus, les codes CORTEX construits à partir du code de Hamming étendu de longueur 8 sont de type I (resp. Type II) si le nombre de permutations est impair (resp. Pair). Cette thèse consiste en l'étude de cette famille de codes afin de fournir une construction effective de codes optimaux. Nous montrons ainsi que tous les codes de type II peuvent être construits sous cette forme si le code de base considéré est le code de Hamming étendu de longueur 8. Nous exhibons un exemple qui prouve que cette propriété n'est pas vraie dans le cas des codes de type I. Nous montrons que les codes CORTEX sont des codes quasi-cycliques si les permutations choisies sont des transformations affines. Nous nous intéressons ensuite à la représentation sous forme de graphes de Tanner des codes CORTEX. En se restreignant à la classe des graphes de Tanner à lacets, nous montrons qu'il est possible de construire un treillis à 16 états pour le code de Golay binaire, un treillis minimal à 9 états pour le code de Golay ternaire et un treillis à 256 états pour un code auto-dual sur Z4 de paramètres (24,4[12],12) pour la distance de Lee. Enfin, nous proposons une généralisation de cette construction à des codes de tout rendement. Nous montrons numériquement qu'il est possible de construire plusieurs codes auto-duaux optimaux spécialement à des longueurs où les constructions classiques n'en fournissent pas. Certains des codes ainsi construits répondent à des questions ouvertes comme celle de la construction du premier code auto-dual ternaire de paramètres [52,26,15]We study a family of error-correcting codes called CORTEX. The construction is based on the use of 1/2-block basis codes assembled in layers between which are inserted permutations. It has been proved that self-duality is conserved under this construction. Moreover, CORTEX codes build from the extended Hamming code of length 8 are of type I (resp. Of type II) if the number of permutations is odd (resp. Even). This thesis represents a study of this family in order to build effectively optimal codes. We prove that any type II code can be seen as a CORTEX code if the basis code is the extended Hamming code of length 8. We present an example showing that this property is not true in the case of type I codes. We also show that CORTEX codes are quasi-cyclic codes if one chooses affine transformations. We are then interested in the representation of CORTEX codes in the form of Tanner graphs. On focusing on the class of Necklace Tanner graphs, we show that is possible to obtain a 16-state tail-biting trellis for the binary Golay code, a minimal 9-state tail-biting trellis for the ternary Golay code and a 256-state tail-biting trellis for a (24,4[12],12) self-dual code over Z4 for the Lee metric. Lastly, we generalize the construction to codes of any rate. We numerically show that is possible to build many optimal self-dual codes especially at lengths where classical constructions do not provide any. Lors de cette étude, j'ai effectué des recherches sur trois sortes d'assemblages du bois : les colles naturelles, les colles synthétiques et le soudage sans colles, ceci dans le but d'améliorer les performances de fabrication des panneaux de particules, des panneaux contreplaqués, des lamellés-collés et des composites. Dans ce travail, le contenu d'étude inclut les éléments suivants : 1) L'assemblage des panneaux semi-extérieurs ou extérieurs par les colles naturelles : Trois types différents de tannins (les tannins hydrolysables de châtaigniers, les tannins condensations de pin radiata et les tannins condensations de mimosa) sont étudiés. 2) L'assemblage des panneaux extérieurs par les colles synthétiques : Différents types d'additifs (le nanoargile, des précurseurs oligomériques de poly (amine-ester) et glutaraldéhyde) pour améliorer leurs performances. La résine MUF (Mélamine-Urée-Formaldéhyde) est obtenue sous forme de poudre par séchage d'atomisation ainsi sa durée de vie est potentiellement infinie.3) L'assemblage des panneaux extérieurs par soudage sans colles : Deux matériaux (l'huile et la lignine acétylée) pour améliorer les résistances à l'eau. Toutes les propriétés physico-chimiques et mécaniques ont été étudiées en mettant en oeuvre des techniques d'analyse et d'évaluation telles que la thermomécanique TMA, la cristallographie aux rayons X (XRD), la résonance magnétique nucléaire 13C RMN, la spectrométrie de masse MALDI-TOF, et la fabrication des panneaux en laboratoire. Finalement, nous avons amélioré les caractéristiques des panneaux avec les colles ou sans colles et spécifiquement la résistance à l'eau pour une utilisation extérieureIn this studied, wood based composites were assembled with the natural adhesive (tannin adhesive), the synthesis adhesive (MUF) and the welding wood without adhesive. These wood composites include particleboard, plywood and glulam. We focus on these works as follows: 1) Three different types of tannins (chestnut hydrolysable tannins, pine condensation tannins and mimosa condensation tannins) as thermosetting or cold-setting adhesive were studied to assemble particleboard, plywood and glulam for application to semi-exterior or exterior. 2) The characteristics of MUF resins for particleboard applications have been improved through a number of additives (nanoclay, hyperbranched polymer and glutaraldehyde), the powder adhesive of MUF was obtained by spray-drying technologies, and it could be prolonger the shelf-life of MUF adhesive. It also can be application to exterior after enhancing. 3) The blockboard for application exterior was assembling by welded dowels, two differents materials (sun flower oil and acetylated lignin) were used to improve the water resistance. These physical, chemical and mechanical properties of these assemblages was investigated by implementing some techniques such as thermomechanical analysis (TMA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectroscometry (MALDI-TOF), and by manufacturing wood composites. Finally, the performances of these wood composites were apparent improved whether with the tannin adhesive, the MUF adhesive or the welding wood without adhesive, especially improved the water resistance of wood composites for exterior applications

A luz é considerada como a energia que sustenta a vida. Toda a informação que nós captamos e a percepção dos objectos depende especialmente da natureza das imagens que são formadas nos nossos olhos. Sabemos que através da luz recebemos grandes quantidades de informação do mundo que nos rodeia e para vermos as imagens e os objectos necessitamos de um sistema visual. Podemos dizer que a cor apresenta um papel importante para a nossa sobrevivência (por exemplo: alguns seres vivos como é o caso de algumas aves que apresentam algumas cores nas suas plumagens que é muito importante para elas). É um fenómeno físico expressivo e simbólico de importância fundamental na linguagem visual. Por vezes pode-se tratar de um conceito subjectivo que consiste na interpretação que o sistema sensorial e o cérebro atribuem aos diferentes comprimentos de onda da luz recebida.
Ver é para nós, um fenómeno tão natural que se torna necessário um esforço de imaginação para concebermos que tal fenómeno inclui a solução de certos problemas. O olho é um dos órgãos mais importantes do corpo humano, são os responsáveis pela captação da informação proveniente do meio exterior e pela sua codificação, em impulsos nervoso através da acção de células nervosas especializadas. Trata-se de um órgão fantástico e bastante complexo, considerando um prolongamento do tecido cerebral. Até ao século XVI pensava-se erroneamente que o olho emitisse luz, hoje sabemos que ele apenas é um receptor.
Com este trabalho pretende-se descrever de forma sucinta, como o ser humano consegue discriminar e identificar as cores, abordar algumas teorias da cor, descrever o funcionamento do processo visual e apresentar algumas anomalias da visão das cores.The light is regarded as the energy that supports life. Every information that we attract and the perception of objects especially depends on the nature of the images that are formed in our eyes. We know that through light we receive large amounts of information from the world around us and to see those images and objects we need a visual system. We can say that the color has an important role for our survival (for example: some living beings such as some birds that have some colors in their plumage that is very important to them). Is a physical and expressive and symbolic phenomenon of most importance in visual language.Sometimes it can be a subjective concept that is based on the interpretation that sensorial system and the brain give to the different lengths of light received. Seeing is for us, such a natural phenomenom that is becomes necessary an effort of imagination so that we can realize that such phenomenom includes the solution of certain problems. The eyes are one of the most important organs of human body, they are responsible for the capture of outside information and it‟s encoding, in nervous impulses through the actions of specialized nervous cells. It‟s a fantastic and rather complex organ, considered an extension of brain tissue. Until the 16th century, was wrongly thought that the eyes produced light, today we know that they are only light receivers. With this work is intended to describe in short words how the human being can see and identify colours, talk about colours theories, describe the functioning of visual process and present some anomalies of vision and it‟s colours.

The phenomenon of fading constitutes a fundamental problem in wireless communications. Researchers have proposed many methods to improve the reliability of communication over wireless channels in the presence of fading. Many studies on this topic have focused on diversity techniques. Transmit diversity is a common diversity type in which multiple antennas are employed at the transmitter. Space-time coding is a technique based on transmit diversity introduced by Tarokh et alii in 1998.
In this thesis, various types of space-time codes are examined. Since they were originally introduced in the form of trellis codes, a major part is devoted to space-time trellis codes where the fundamental design criteria are established. Then, space-time block coding, which presents a different approach, is introduced and orthogonal spacetime block codes are analyzed in some detail. Lastly, rank codes from coding theory
are studied and their relation to space-time coding are investigated.

L'idée des turbo-codes, construction très performante permettant l'encodage de l'information classique, ne pouvait jusqu'à présent pas être transposé au problème de l'encodage de l'information quantique. En effet, il subsistait des obstacles tout aussi théoriques que relevant de leur implémentation. A la version quantique connue de ces codes, on ne connaissait ni de résultat établissant une distance minimale infinie, propriété qui autorise de corriger un nombre arbitraire d'erreurs, ni de décodage itératif efficace, car les turbo-encodages quantiques, dits catastrophiques, propagent certaines erreurs lors d'un tel décodage et empêchent son bon fonctionnement. Cette thèse a permis de relever ces deux défis, en établissant des conditions théoriques pour qu'un turbo-code quantique ait une distance minimale infinie, et d'autre part, en exhibant une construction permettant au décodage itératif de bien fonctionner. Les simulations montrent alors que la classe de turbo-codes quantiques conçue est efficace pour transmettre de l'information quantique via un canal dépolarisant dont l'intensité de dépolarisation peut aller jusqu'à p = 0,145. Ces codes quantiques, de rendement constant, peuvent aussi bien être utilisés directement pour encoder de l'information quantique binaire, qu'être intégrés comme modules afin d'améliorer le fonctionnement d'autres codes tels que les LDPC quantiques.
