SOULARD, MARIE THERESE. "Colette et le serpent." Nantes, 1998. http://www.theses.fr/1998NANT3018.
Full textThis study, colette and the snake is made of three parts. The first one draws up a list of ophidian meetings, swimming or creeping grass-snakes, adders and pythons. The writing methods show a creature that, whether ordinary or monstrous, always remains strange. Fear arouses the writer's need to understand and then describe precisely. The other parts single out metaphoric uses. Firstly, in the second part, animals, environmental effects - very close or more distant - detected through ophidian good points, broaden to a dreamlike or even utopian place. Then the snake indicates advent of a perfect world. Simple or indirect images and revised cliches are then used. The third one presents the problems of the female body with gradually more complex figures: the awakening development of the senses, woman cunning and colette's main idea that love leads to decline. Then the conflict with the motherly concept of sensuality comes to light as it resolve with "la naissance du jour" a novel which clarifies the previous ones, full of hardship and strains. At last, a new and complex figure appears - the "double slope". The woman is faced with contradictions showed by two metaphors: she must avoid to be taken in by obsessive pleasures but also overcome the tests of time that ruin her beauty. If sensual pleasures seems a successfull slide with the metaphoric "necklace", me power of time appears with the "wisteria" that shows its destructrice force against the female body and the overall perspective of the works of man

Full textColette’s life can be compared with a way to gain concretely her freedom, and her works can summarize itself as evidence specifying the importance of the freedom. We want understand the position of Colette, who is at once late and in advance of the feminism, analyzing in Colette’s works the image of the woman, who persist in being woman to the end, and who emphasize her mental virility at the same time. The first part is dedicated to the author who, accepting to be a passive woman, dont’t loses heart fulfilling herself as a woman in love and free all her real life long. In the second part, we demonstrate that writing itself is for the author a target to reach to obtain freedom and equality, assuming her difference and restoring her femininity. From the third part, we approach subjects connected with feminine emancipation, raising the problem of conciliation of freedom and love thanks to the own woman's duality and owing to the conflict between the two sexes, and considering author's point of view on the subject of woman's sexuality and sensuality. We understand finally that all the components of the duality that oppose and substitute themselves alternately, make woman's equilibrium and give to her the strength to be a woman. Therefore, it is in androgyny that the author finds the true realization of freedom and woman's autonomy without denying man's need, and vice versa, that we show in the last part

Full textFist this study means to be an analysis of five selected novels which determine similar elements of the plot. It can be established that the search for independence and peaceful loneliness is the subject of each book. Then we study the general system of relations which appears to be the keys of this work. We purposely excluded the study of the relationships to "the other"; - the relation to time with the study of favoured moments and of memory reveals the search for identity which seems to live on this very confrontation; - the relation to space allows us to realize that the heroines want to understand and control their unchanging nature and their evolution: the relation to the seasons and to the different elements in nature are often disclosers of the being. Finally, the relation to oneself concretizes this search with the awareness concerning the different pictures of our body. In a second part we study two characteristic topics which combine with the general system of relations. The first is that of the house. Through different aspects of the house, the house and childhood, the house as a shelter for solitude, for love, for femininity, can be seen the symbol of the house, which reveals our own identity
Michineau, Stéphanie. "L' autofiction dans l'oeuvre de Colette." Le Mans, 2007. http://cyberdoc.univ-lemans.fr/theses/2007/2007LEMA3001.pdf.
Full textAlthough the genre ‘autofiction’ has been accepted by the literary Establishment since 2003, its exact meaning is still open to controversy today. Serge Doubrovsky, who invented this particular form of literature, views it essentially as a variant of autobiography. He regards Colette as being the first writer to put his particular theory into practice. Our thesis employs the theoretical perspective of autofiction, with all the chronological paradox that the term implies. Indeed, a close examination of Colette’s work prompts us to situate it globally in a autofictional sphere. Colette never actually subscribed to any autobiographical pact, maintaining a deliberate ambiguity in this regard, but nevertheless she cannot be accused of indifference to theoretical autobiographical considerations, and we have set out to explain the reasons why she favoured autofiction rather than straightforward autobiography as a means of self-expression in this study. One could no doubt put her choice down to the originality of autofiction, a genre that Colette more specifically defines as self-searching, the quest for an essentially elusive subject and a space-time oscillation between dream and reality which has more to do with projection than retrospection

Full textIn colettes's autobiography, the birth place is the meeting-point of two opposite movements: one, converging, is directed by the mother who keeps calling back all the members of her household toward the center of the recess; the other one is diverging: the daughter escapes in the countryside to conquer the beauties for the world. When the daughter goes away for good, she loses all her landmarks and wanders in endless movements to and fro, never reaching fulfillment. Whereas the birth house is missing from colette's first novels dedicated to the outside environment, it slowly emerges in the work as an attempt to recapture the roots of life. Meanwhile, the mental uneasiness is projected on other types (tumble down or brand new) of houses. The re-creation of the mother house - a model for all harmonies expands in the writing; but its different shapes in fiction do not prevent a unity in dream and action. Thus the native urge governs the sentimental controversy in colette's late novels: the lover responsible for the desertion is excluded, which allows

Full textThe work I have been doing for this thesis, has to do both to French literature and to the reception of literature. I have tried to understand the relations of Colette with Italy so, I have done a comparative analysis of Italian translations of four novels of Colette. Doing this work I have notice that the conception that Italian readers have of Colette, is quite different from the conception of French readers. In France, Colette is one of the most famous writer of the XX Century, but in a second moment she was judged a scandalous woman, a writer of erotic novels. In Italy, the publishing, the literary criticism and translators, have contribute to reinforce this image and nowadays it seems impossible to think of Colette different from the writer of Claudine and La Vagabonde. My thesis aims to change this image of Colette and give her back her place in contemporary literature, the place that she has conquered hardly thanks to a meticulous work with the French language. In this thesis I have found out a new Colette, who can adjust herself to every narrative contest. This thesis could be a starting point for people who intend to study Colette in Italy from a new point of view and could help to discover an author who is, for a large part, unknown

Full textColette's works that we have studied are limited between one thousand nine hundred and one thousand thirty-six. The first chapter is entitled "the motivation of love". These pages permit to definite the different ways in which couples are formed, within mariage or free-union. Sexuality and the social context constitue the theme of the secondchater. In effet, both fields bring out principal problems about love. Concerning sexuality, colette accentuates the problem of the protagonists' age. And insists upon the characters' sex, distinguishes the common sensuality among the heroines from the more various masculin attitudes; sexual disagreements provoke a cricis between partners. On the social plane, we underline some existing oppositions between the characters. The relation between domination and sobmission, as well as the problem about the choice between love and freedom, is not simple. The stated oppositions lead to throw back the social conditions into question. The last chapter is dedicated to " love and writing". On one hand, for colette, love appears to be a source of literary creation. Writing seems to provide colette and her characters some relief of love sufferings; the relieving power of writing is nevertheless limited. On the other hand, we are attached to the author's style, regarding writing about love. We complete our study on what has evolued and what has remained constant, as concerns colette'style

Full textRenee Nere of La Vagabonde, novelist and music-hall mime, is examined in the second chapter. For Renee, liberty is more important than the security of the established identity which marriage offers. The pain associated with her choice to remain alone underscores the oppression that she must bear.
"Colette" in La Naissance du jour is studied in Chapter Three. There we discuss the importance of "Sido" in the construction of "Colette's" life model, a construction that never ends. The differences between mother (poet) and daughter (novelist) are studied along with their similarities. Again, reflection and writing are found to be more noble than love.

Full textPresented as a case study and from the angle of the acceptance of literary works, this thesis investigates to what extent and how colette has become a curriculum classical author. The first part of the thesis is based on the analysis of 279 secondary or upper primary school textbooks ranging from 1920 to 1989. It accounts for the writer's evolution within the school system, describing the niche occupied by colette's production and more especially the school treatment of her three main works (la maison de claudine, les vrilles de la vigne and sido). It also analyses the writer's image as conveyed by textbooks notices and iconography as well as the uses of her works according to various educational aims. Paradoxically enough, although colette's works have been extensively used she is regarded as a minor classical author. The second part of the thesis focuses on the 1920's and 1930's. It aims as explaining this position as a minor classical author by delving into colette's consecration phase. Her position as a classical writer was conferred upon her during those two decades both by the presse and the publishing world and by a positive change in the critical approach of her books. Yet, long-lasting reserves, the minor role played by a so-called women's literature and an autobiographical reading of her production have weakened colette's notoriety. This may account for the fact that colette has first been acknowledged by an ill legitimate part of the educational institution. Raised to the position of a classical author by primary and upper primary schools, colette will retain her status as a minor classical writer for a long time

Full textThe first part of the thesis deals with the years of learning when protagonists gradually discover love's hardships. It's through their pangs and suffering that each one of them will become aware of his or her place in society.
In the second part devoted to young couples will appear the progressive awareness, painful though necessary, that the partner is hopelessly a stranger.
The last part studies the differences in behavioral patterns of men and women in the life of the couple. With Colette the man regresses and sinks where the woman draws strength from revolt and learns solidarity in womanhood and how to go beyond herself. In Colette's feminine universe jealousy is then a positive element encompassing self awareness and mastery over oneself enabling thus through careful and appropriate use a renewal of the feeling of love.

Full textThis study focuses on part three of the triptych Le génie féminin by Julia Kristeva, which deals with Colette. Its intention is to outline a hermeneutic pathway so as to clarify the characteristic features of Kristeva's approach, by analysing certain crucial points in Colette's “life-work” viewed in the light of Kristeva's conception of génie féminin. In the chapters on writing, the maternal, sexuality and femaleness, the analysis of the structural components of Kristeva's interpretation is combined with critical reflections on Colette's writing. In terms of methodology, the most complex matter that the thesis aims to clarify is the result of the intertwining of different disciplines such as philosophy, semiotics and psychoanalysis, which proves to be essential in order to fully grasp the innovative nature of this kaleidoscopic conception of female genius

It sets and assesses s. Colette's reform in the church of the 18th century. The connections of this work with the great families of france and burgundy are also underlined. The fourth book deals with evolution of the reform from the 15th century to the present days, by different approaches. The litterary text is polysemic and constantly produces new interpretations thus questioning its definite meaning. Its meaning can be found more often in its movement than in its finished form. Full textColette very often proved to be critical facing her first writings, which however signed her entrance in litterature. It seems therefore evidence based to wonder how youth work has influenced Colette’s writings, and how her first texts have deeply influenced the structure of her stories, making difficult the classification of these texts. At first, the resumption of forename « Claudine » in La Maison de Claudine suggests a reminiscence of youth work, since the writer put away, and also takes back and develops several themes of Claudine, as if she wanted to reintegrate to her project the cycle which marked her beginning in litterature. The link between her first novels and the rest of her works exceeds this reference. So we could wonder why the creation of Claudine is the condition of all her following writings, autobiographic at first, but also fictional, because her texts seems to be built on uninterrupted dialogue between an unavoidable debt towards Willy, and the necessity to surpass a fruitless model. Finally, this dialogue allows to receive, throughout Colette’s work, a series of tensions and paradoxes, which feeds the appraising of the artistic plan of the author, who offers a plural writing, smoothing the generic categories to the advantage of the voice which carries the story, making of the building of writer’s representation the major artistic stake of Colette’s work

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is on the scrupulous study of the "problem of the identity and the sex in the works of colette", which is considered from the point of view of the writing about the body. The methodology that i have used in this thesis follows the thematic of jean pierre richard. The aim of the present thesis is not to give an anthropology of imaginary but to have the themes' analysis benefit by the remarks on the structure of the text, as well as to enlight the contribution of the psychoanalysis. After having defined the differnts strategics of the obliteration and of the absence of the body, this thesis examines the complex relations that the feminity and the other maintain, as well as the particular state of the motherly body. The last part of this thesis deals with the central question of the sexual incertitude posed by the works of colette. In the works of colette, the essentiel fact is that the sex represents the basis and the masquerade. This thesis follows the mouvements of the dramaturgy of the desire, the windings unforeseen of the writing in the mouvement even of that's fantastic adventure

Full textColette's first texts, the "claudines", represent the matrix of her work : the themes of love, freedom, sensuality and sexuality are all dealt with in this portrayal of an unconventional young girl. The conflict between the subject position and the so-called "feminine position" is played out in claudine's transformation into a woman. The heroine finds herself at the cross-roads of two systems : that of the bildungsroman, based on the "evolving" structure of male sexuality and that related to female sexuality, defined as an "involution". To manage the contradiction, colette unsets the trap from within the convention. Her game consists of reproducing the conventional structure while distancing herself from it. She respects the romantic definitions of femininity and masculinity while challenging them. This ambiguity forms the basis of her work as a "woman-writer"
