Robidoux, Jonathan, and Jonathan Robidoux.
Transfusion medicine is an important part of the Canadian health care system. In Quebec, the Héma-Québec blood bank manages all stages from blood collection to delivery of blood products to hospitals. In recent years, the alteration of red blood cells deformability observed during storage in blood banks has returned to the forefront of discussions because of the increasing accessibility of new technologies to better characterize this property. This project objective was to develop, within Héma-Québec, a novel microfluidic approach to measure the evolution of red blood cells deformability during blood bank storage. Monitoring the deformability of six red blood cells concentrates stored at T = [2-8 °C] for 42 days determined that the performance of the microfluidic method surpassed that of a comparative method, which was also developed as part of this project. Some inconsistencies observed during the application of the microfluidic method have subsequently led to an optimization phase. Although some aspects of the method still need to be improved, the results of this project suggest that deformability could possibly serve as a quality marker of red blood cells in the same way as the most eloquent markers do.

Genetic biobanks are springing up all over the place arising ethical principles such as human protection rights, confidentiality and consent validity. We analyze historical, ethical and juridical context. And then we evaluate the practice of constitution, storing and using products human body with questionnaires intended for professionnals, research participants and research ethical committees. The results show that there is a gap between the practice and the legislative and regulatory procedures. In this perspective, our results and propositions transmitted to research professionals, population and legislators must be used to built the rules.

Full textWith the invasion of the pharmaceutical specialties, the pharmacist no longer makes medicines; he simply distributes it. Making up prescriptions now only accounts for 1% of the turnover of pharmacies. What purpose then does the pharmacist serve ? Is there not a risk of the profession disappearing one day or losing its value ? The urpose of this thesis is to answer this problem. It demonstrate that the specific identity of the protagonists and the highly perfected system enables the french body of pharmacists to overcome all its internal and external contradictions and resist effectively the threats of a loss in its economic and symbolic value. The first part of the thesis analyses the sociological profile of the protagonists, thesis motivation, the sociological mechanisms of the selection of the elite, the student body, the choice of the option and finally the matrimonial strategies with the choice of the spouse. The second part analyses the links between the protagonist and the system through : the setting up in business and the second "numerus clausus", the dialectic between the status of assistant and titular pharmacist, the origin of the feminisation of the profession and its power stakes, the specific economic circuit, the governing council, the unions and the osmosis between the multiple associations, in particular the political associations, and the state

Full textWhat do the processes of collection and exhibition of pre-Islamic and Islamic objects bring to the definition of a specific relationship between Saudi Arabia and its archaeological objects? The objective is to describe the “conscious and systematic” Saudi conservation activities to understand how archaeological objects have come to embody pieces of the cradle of Islam’s “heritage”. To study the collection and exhibition of archaeological objects from a centred-object approach should allow the understanding of the recognition given to pre-Islamic and Islamic objects in Saudi Arabia. The thesis is organized in two parts. The first aims to introduce the collection process of archaeological objects in Ottoman and Saudi Arabia (1761-1981) as well as its impact on the recognition of archaeological objects transformed into national antiquities. A chronological track is privileged, from ethnographic scientific missions to epigraphic and archaeological ones conducted between 1761 and 1953 by foreigners, to the Saudi nationalization of archaeology along with the creation of a Department of Antiquities and Museums in 1963 and of a Department of Archaeology at the King Saud University in 1967, and the launch of a first five-year plan of archaeological excavations between 1976 and 1981. The second part presents the public exhibition process of these national antiquities. The chronological path followed in the first part is pursued to account for three exhibition contexts of these antiquities between 1978 and 2015: in regional museums, in the National Museum, and within temporary exhibitions abroad. The presentation of these exhibitions leads to the understanding of both the semiotic transformation of collected archaeological objects and the inner recognition of the pre-Islamic past of Saudi Arabia

Full textToulouse had conserved its historical monuments between 1789 and 1913. The measures were devoted to the institutionalization and valorization of these monuments as local heritage. Not only the government and local authorities, but local scholars also committed themselves to this long project. These scholars had a significant role since the Revolutionary era in the foundation of the Museum of Toulouse (1793), organization of collections and conservation of historic monuments. Seen as the ‘second city’ of France or Europe, Toulouse should be known in the art world for its conservation practices. At the time of the organization of a national system of conservation of historical monuments, local scholars established the Archaeological Society of the South of France (1831). Their frequent conflicts with the government, local authorities and private owners of monuments started in the nineteenth century. But that situation did not prevent them from conserving some historic buildings, artworks and local memory, unlike the government, which intends to find national or universal interest in these monuments especially before the enactment of the law separating the Church and the State. With the progress of the institutionalization of cultural heritage, the valorization of local heritage reflected lesser universal interest in the art of Toulouse than local historic memory with local historic and art studies and their popular books and guides. It is even more inseparable from the birth of the idea of the ‘Rose City’, which symbolizes the characteristics of the architecture of Toulouse

Full textThis work implies that testimonies of resistance published by political actors between 1943 and 1946 are the observable conclusion of personal stories' rewriting activity during the war. The comparison of the texts with the actual trajectories that inspired them provides a view on resistant identities' management during the phase of political reconstruction. It is then possible to apprehend the repertoires of political action which were enabled by the experience of resistance whereas the historical and institutional translation of this experience is collectively at stake. During the 4th Republic, the challenging of the institutions and the implementation of a new role of recourse in political competition will partly be the consequences of a will to carry out these repertoires. The return of General de Gaulle appears, to that regard, as the accomplishment of a mythical reorganisation of the political order, which therefore defines "the Resistance" as one of its main references

Full textIn Northwestern Yunnan, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture is the place of definition of a consensual and attractive Tibetan identity, by which political authorities give local people a concern for the natural environment. The representations they carry echo and mobilize Western representations of the Tibetan people, which include the Shangri-La imagery and the identification of Tibetan Buddhism with ecology. Since 2006, it is staged in Pudacuo National Park, which is the first national park in China. Although it was elaborated with the help of a United-States conservationist non-governmental organization, this place has in fact little to do with the protection of the natural environment and aims to grow mass tourism. The alternative development it offers to local farmers is welcome as it opens new horizons, including the possession of a contemporary culture, access to the consumer society and the opening to the outside world
Alfonso, Lizarazo Edgar. "Optimization of blood collection systems : Balancing service quality given to the donor and the efficiency in the collection planning." Thesis, Saint-Etienne, EMSE, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013EMSE0698/document.
Full textActivity reports of the French Blood Establishment (EFS) indicate a growing demand for Labile Blood Products (LBP) as red blood cells (RBC), platelets and plasma. To ensure the vital demand of labile blood products (LBP), it’s essential to optimize the logistics related with the collection of blood components. To deal with this situation, the EFS Auvergne-Loire carry out a reflection in order to use more efficiently the collection devices in fixed and mobile sites, to improve the quality of service offered to the donor and the efficiency of human resources. In this context we have developed in this thesis operational tools for (i) modeling of blood collection devices (ii) The regulation of flows donors (iii) Planning of bloodmobile collections. The method analysis of collection devices is based on techniques of discrete event simulation. A preliminary modeling of donors’ flow in fixed and mobile collection systems using Petri nets was conducted. For the regulation of flow of donors, i.e. the optimal capacity planning and appointment scheduling of blood collections, two approaches were considered: (a) Simulation based-optimization.(b) Mathematical Programming: Mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) based on queuing networks and mathematical programming representation of discrete event systems. For planning of bloodmobile collections. Two models have been developed: (a) At the tactical level: Mixed integer linear programming (MIP) to determine the weeks in which the mobile collection must be organized in order to ensure the regional self-sufficiency of RBC. (b) At the operational level: Mixed integer linear programming (MIP) for the planning of human resources in charge of blood collections

Full textEntitled Patrimony and patrimonialization in Cameroon: the DGB sites of the northern Mandara Mountains as a case study, my thesis presents a linked series of arguments designed to clarify the concept of “patrimonial good”. It falls within a field of research that considers patrimony and patrimonialization as an ensemble of discursive codes, of which the interest to anthropologists lies in the understanding of meaning rather than in ontological characteristics. The thesis is concerned with the intelligibility of relationships to elements of patrimony arrived at by a process involving the identification of patrimoniality, the expression of changes and patrimogenic social consequences. Thus this work discusses the identification of patrimony and the relationships that underlie the concept of patrimonial element. In a general way, it is a presentation on the overall state of patrimony in Cameroon from a viewpoint that is both vertical and horizontal and which focuses on the different forms of construction of patrimony existing in that country. Identification of the alchemy of patrimonial construction is thus a subject of enquiry, as is the how of things becoming patrimonial. To achieve its results, the thesis relies on analysis of the processes of identification of patrimony, considering them in terms of two timescales, one focused on their historical genesis, the other on the construction procedures taking place in the present. These two levels of analysis lead to the finding that patrimonialization is a process embedded in the linkage of various actors and social contexts in the domains of ideology and politics as well as the social and religious. With the example of the DGB sites, the thesis brings out certain of the characteristics that allow determination of the attribution of a property to the sphere of goods laden with symbolic charges.

Full textThe Basque province of Soule (department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France) contains more than 14,000 hectares of common-pool land. This land provides numerous resources, most notably summer pasturage, to the animal raisers of the province who, for centuries, have collectively managed that land under a common property regime. At the same time, biodiversity conservation has arisen as a chief concern of the international community and of European policy-makers. In 1992, the European Commission passed the Habitats Directive, which, together with the Birds Directive, creates a pan-European network of areas to be managed for social, economic, and ecological sustainability. This network, called Natura 2000, is made up of conservation sites on both public and private lands, and the common lands of Soule are covered almost in their entirety by Natura 2000 sites. The implementation of Natura 2000 is pushing the current system toward one of co-management between resource users, state agencies, and other stakeholders yet to be identified. This dissertation research examines the co-management process that is slowly emerging and compares it to the existing management regime. I discuss how relations between Basques and the French state combine with features of the implementation process to create resistance. I then examine the major themes of resistance and their origins, and explore the particularities that must be considered when moving from common property to co-management

Full textThe economic crises of recent decades have resulted in the appearance across the country of numerous brownfield sites. In order to remain resilient, and with a view to urban regeneration, the country will need to make strategic decisions in terms of the preservation, conversion or destruction of industrial relicts. At the same time, the rise in population, consumption and changing lifestyles require more and more space for urban development. It now appears that priority should be given to the remediation of these disused industrial sites in order to reinvest them with new functions and architectural forms. Still, is it really necessary to destroy everything when doing so means losing so much in terms of the cultural legacy and identity represented by these brownfield sites? To find a solution to this problem, an evaluation grid to identify the disused industrial sites of high legacy value has been created using the concept of territorial resilience. To this end, we have drawn on the notions of heritage and symbolism, and the capacities for resistance and bifurcation. In order to confirm and support our research hypotheses, a number of post-industrial areas that have benefited from major redevelopments were analysed. In addition, a study site has been selected: the Val de Sambre, which has experienced both industrialisation and industrial decline. Numerous current post-industrial remains allow us to experiment with our evaluation grid and assess the disused industrial sites most suitable for redevelopment

Full textIn France, the objective of ecological compensation for residual impacts on biodiversity is to achieve no net loss of biodiversity. A normative framework setting out about ten principles theoretically makes it possible to achieve this objective. We are therefore studying the implementation of biodiversity offset through three High Speed Railway projects. We analyze the actor's game around this implementation through the theories of collective action, and in particular the analytical framework of Translation proposed by M. Callon. This first analysis allows us to understand how biodiversity offset is a socio-technical object. We highlight that many actors with diverging stakes are mobilizing to implement ecological compensation. We show that there is a tension between the mobilization of actors and ecological requirements, these two aspects are not always compatible. The duration of the environmental services specifications and the associated retribution of landowners, who set-up biodiversity offset specification, is decisive for both human and non-human (biodiversity) mobilization. We then question the temporal spatial effects of collective action and its ability to achieve a net loss of biodiversity. We show that the measures could not be effective before the impacts began. Land management in France seems for the moment to be difficult to reconcile with the implementation of unanticipated biodiversity offset at a very early stage. We show that the majority of biodiversity offset sites are small in size, although larger areas seem more virtuous for biodiversity. Finally, we show that the sustainability of biodiversity offset measures can be assessed at different levels depending on (i) the type of land control (acquisition, agreement); (ii) biodiversity offset contracts (duration, content of the latter - sanctions in the event of failure to comply with obligations influence the maintenance of the measures); (iii) the management of the renewal of these contracts; (iv) the vocation of the owners of the sites (a public or private construction company does not initially have the role of conserving biodiversity, whereas an environmental NGO has the vocation); (v) the sustainability of the structures and assurances as to the future of the biodiversity offset measures sites in the event of bankruptcy; (vi) the monitoring and control of the implementation

Full textThis thesis aims to study the urban memory of downtown Beirut. The objective of this research is to reconstitute in situ, the historical and memory line of downtown Beirut since its post-war reconstruction: from its transformation to its metamorphosis. This work is based on sixty-one semi-structured interviews with the Lebanese population, professionals (architects, lawyers, politicians) and research professors (geographers, sociologists, literarys). This research is part of a qualitative approach. It also relies on socio-anthropological, historical and geographical studies carried out on the reconstruction of downtown Beirut and its urban history retracing three time periods: before, during and after the war, founders of evolutions of downtown Beirut. Through the comparison tool, it explores the reconstruction processes of other cities destroyed during armed conflicts. By crossing the different questions and urban choices related to the reconstruction and preservation of the memory of the destroyed cities, this research identifies the specificities of the Lebanese reconstruction. This work is also based on a collection of ethnographic data highlighting the urban memory of the city center through the memorial narratives of the inhabitants, favoring a sensitive urban planning focused on a sensory memory and on past sensations, proven and disappeared with the metamorphosis places downtown Beirut
