International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology 57, no. 6 (June 1, 2007): 1188–91. http://dx.doi.org/10.1099/ijs.0.64901-0.

Abstract:
A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped Pigmentiphaga-like bacterial strain, K110T, was isolated from wastewater collected from a dye works in Korea and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Strain K110T grew optimally at pH 7.0–-8.0 and 37 °C in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. It contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16 : 0, cyclo C17 : 0 and cyclo C19 : 0 ω8c as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified aminolipids. The DNA G+C content was 67.4 mol%. In a neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree constructed on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain K110T joined Pigmentiphaga kullae, the sole species of the genus, at a bootstrap confidence level of 100 %. Strain K110T exhibited a 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 99.4 % with respect to the type strain of P. kullae. Although strain K110T was found to be similar to P. kullae in terms of phenotypic properties, it differed in terms of motility, polar lipids, DNA–DNA relatedness and repetitive extragenic palindromic PCR genomic fingerprinting patterns. On the basis of phenotypic, phylogenetic and genetic data, strain K110T represents a novel species of the genus Pigmentiphaga, for which the name Pigmentiphaga daeguensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is K110T (=KCTC 12838T=JCM 14330T).

Stovold, Elizabeth Margaret. "Open Access Works are as Reliable as Other Publishing Models at Retracting Flawed Articles from the Biomedical Literature." Evidence Based Library and Information Practice 9, no. 3 (September 9, 2014): 86. http://dx.doi.org/10.18438/b8qk6d.

Abstract:
A Review of: Peterson, G.M. (2013). Characteristics of retracted open access biomedical literature: a bibliographic analysis. Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. 64(12), 2428-2436. doi: 10.1002/asi.22944 Abstract Objective – To investigate whether the rate of retracted articles and citation rates post-retraction in the biomedical literature are comparable across open access, free-to-access, or pay-to-access journals. Design – Citation analysis. Setting – Biomedical literature. Subjects – 160 retracted papers published between 1st January 2001 and 31st December 2010. Methods – For the retracted papers, 100 records were retrieved from the PubMed database and 100 records from the PubMed Central (PMC) open access subset. Records were selected at random, based on the PubMed identifier. Each article was assigned a number based on its accessibility using the specific criteria. Articles published in the PMC open access subset were assigned a 2; articles retrieved from PubMed that were freely accessible, but did not meet the criteria for open access were assigned a 1; and articles retrieved through PubMed which were pay-to-access were assigned a 0. This allowed articles to be grouped and compared by accessibility. Citation information was collected primarily from the Science Citation Index. Articles for which no citation information was available, and those with a lifetime citation of 0 (or 1 where the citation came from the retraction statement) were excluded, leaving 160 articles for analysis. Information on the impact factor of the journals was retrieved and the analysis was performed twice; first with the entire set, and second after excluding articles published in journals with an impact factor of 10 or above (14% of the total). The average number of citations per month was used to compare citation rates, and the percentage change in citation rate pre- and post-retraction was calculated. Information was also collected on the time between the date the original article was published and the date of retraction, and the availability of information on the reason for the retraction. Main results – The overall rate of retracted articles in the PMC open access subset compared with the wider PubMed dataset was similar (0.049% and 0.028% respectively). In the group with an accessibility rating of 0, the change in citation rate pre- and post-retraction was -41%. For the group with an accessibility rating of 1, the change was -47% and in those with a rating of 2, the change in citation rate was -59%. Removing articles published in high impact factor journals did not change the results significantly. Retractions were issued more slowly for free access papers compared with open or fee-based articles. The bibliographic records for open access articles disclosed details of the reason for the retraction more frequently than free, non-open papers (91% compared to 53%). Conclusion – Open access literature is similar in its rate of retraction and the reduction in post-retraction citations to the rest of the biomedical literature, and is actually more reliable at reporting the reason for the retraction.

Abstract:
The present article offers comments on the collected articles “Archeology of Russian political idealism: 1900–1927. Essays and documents,” Moscow, 2018, by M.A. Kolerov, a well-known Russian publisher, Russian thought historian and one of the major specialists in the works of Russian political idealists of the beginning of the 20th century. The author distinguishes the article “If it doesn’t die, it won’t bear fruit: the power and sacrifice of Nikolai Ustryalov” as the key material of the collection and analyzes the main problems related to the assessment of the emigrants attitude towards Soviet Russia raised by M. Kolerov. The dramatic effect of such attitude on behalf of the patriotic Russian emigrants lay in the difficult moral choice where on one scale was Bolsheviks’ violence against Russian people and on the other side of the scale – the overcoming of the chaos of 1917 and preservation of the Russian statehood core. The historical polemics between N. Ustryalov and P. Struve who made different choices within the framework of that moral dilemma, underline the polemics between the author of the present article A. Tsipko and author of the almanac M. Kolerov.

Abstract:
The use of disaster insurance for public infrastructure is still uncommon in Indonesia, including in Semarang. The success of the adoption of disaster insurance for public infrastructure is inevitably dependent on the acceptance of stakeholders. The aim of this study is to analyse the power and interest of stakeholders towards the use of disaster insurance for public infrastructure in Semarang. Data was collected via interviews and focussed group discussions with stakeholders of Semarang government officials, asset managers, users, etc. The power-interest grid of stakeholders divides the stakeholders based on their levels of power and interests, resulting in four categories, i.e. players, subjects, crowds, and context setters. This research identified the players are the Mayor, Regional Disaster Management Authority, and Regional Financial and Asset Management Authority (5.5%); the subjects category includes The Public Works Department of Human Settlements and Highways, Public Works Department, Trade Department, majority Public Health Center (40.7%); the crowds are Education Department and majority public schools (53.7%); and no context setters (0%). This study found that low trust in the insurer is a major factor causing a lack of interest in the use of insurance. The results of this study are valuable to understand the stakeholder map of Semarang city based on power and interest aspects, and serve as a basis for developing disaster insurance adoption strategies for public infrastructure.

Abstract:
The Great Mirror became a source of themes and subjects for the East Slavic literature. The article researches its angelic theme, the exploration of which allows us to understand how deeply the West European ideas had penetrated into the Orthodox consciousness. The range of problems concerned with spirits contains the most important philosophical aspects, which underwent a significant evolution in the 17th century during the process of the book’s adaptation in a new culture and its russification. The author analyzes the images of lightful angels represented in the book, reveals some features of their nature and appearance, compares the models of celestial hierarchy presented in this book and in some works of ecclesiastical writers, describes anthropological characteristics and “physicality” of the angels, recognizes the types of their service, and finds parallels between the angels appearance’s details shown in the collected novels and the types of iconic images of the spirits, established by the second half of the 15th century, the time when the source for the Great Mirror was made up. Key words: “The Great Mirror”, angels, archangels Michael and Gabriel, the celestial hierarchy, angel’s “body”, service, iconography Pages: 86-94

Abstract:
The paper discusses the breeding and non-breeding distribution and population density of the Kestrel Falco tinnunculus in Slovenia, its movements, breeding biology, hunting behaviour, diet and interactions with other species. The data were collected from published works and directly from observers. The species’ breeding distribution is shown as a comparison of both national breeding bird atlases, which indicated no convincing changes in its distribution. The non-breeding season population estimate (1,000-2,000 ind.) is lower than the breeding population estimate (1,500-2,000 pairs). The Kestrel breeds at altitudes from 0 to 2,050 m a.s.l.; outside the breeding season, it has been observed at altitudes of up to 1,700 m a.s.l. At least part of the breeding population migrates, apparently more or less towards SSW. The breeding season lasts from February to July. It nests in trees, buildings, cliffs, nestboxes and on electricity pylons. In trees it uses abandoned nests of corvids. On buildings it nests mainly on ledges and in various openings. It often nests on industrial and residential buildings. On cliffs it nests in natural openings and in abandoned nests of other species. It lays 3-9 eggs, usually five. It hunts over open terrain by windhovering, active aerial pursuit and stooping onto the ground from perches. It feeds mainly on small mammals and, to a lesser extent, on passerines, reptiles and invertebrates. It interacts with other species during hunting, nest-site selection and breeding itself. Platyhelminthic, nematode, ixodid and insect parasites have all been recorded on the Kestrel

Abstract:
First impressions matter when buying a book; they are less important when chasing up a reference in a library or following a reading list to a book shop. C.T. Hsia on Chinese Literature is a serious tome which looks like a biography – a bust portrait of the octogenarian author smiles out of a stark black and white dust jacket, and the playful title leaves ambiguous whether it is C. T. Hsia or his thoughts we are buying. One of the delights of reputation and seniority is the publication of a lifetime's collected essays. This produces a gift to the reader which takes its rightful place as a history of criticism as well as literary criticism, gathering 16 essays published between 1962 (in The China Quarterly) and 1990, a volume for celebration. As undergraduates of modern Chinese literature, we used to groan when C. T. Hsia appeared on reading lists, as much because the works containing the essays were dog-eared, smelly old volumes, as for their polemicism. Publication in a smart, single volume presents easy access and allows the essays to be contemplated for their merit and range. Since C. T. Hsia has been considered, as Patrick Hanan writes, “without question the most influential critic of Chinese fiction since the 1960s,” his essays remain important reading matter.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Upper Airway Stimulation (UAS) and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) are trackable therapies for obstructive sleep apnea. We used recent big-data cohorts to compare changes in sleepiness versus usage. Methods ADHERE is an international registry of real-world UAS outcomes from 2016 to date. General UAS criteria are CPAP intolerance, AHI 15-65 (<25% central+mixed), and suggested BMI≤35. Baseline ESS is collected from the medical record, and follow-up ESS and usage is collected 2-4 months after therapy activation. M Health Fairview maintains a database of cross-linked CPAP and EHR data. All new adult sleep patients from 2015 onward were included paralleling ADHERE: BMI≤35, AHI 15-65, and daily CPAP-EHR data starting at least 60 days prior to 2nd ESS measurement. Baseline ESS was collected at consult, and follow-up ESS was collected approximately 6 months later. Device-reported usage hours were compared with the changes in ESS from baseline. Results UAS (n=690) and CPAP (n=514) groups were similar: age 59.7±10.8 versus 59.7±13.6, 78% versus 75% male, and AHI 35.3±14.4 versus 33.8±14.0. UAS group was slightly less obese, BMI 29.3±3.9 versus 30.0±3.4 (p=0.001), with higher baseline ESS, 11.4±5.6 versus 8.6±5.3 (p<0.001). UAS usage was higher at 6.4±2.0 hours/night versus 5.2±2.0 hours/night with CPAP (p<0.001). UAS group average ESS decreased 2.5 points for patients with 0-4 hours of use (n=81), decreasing to 3.8 points with at 4 or more hours of use (n=609). CPAP group average ESS decreased 2.5 points for patients with 0-4 hours of use (n=125), decreasing to 3.3 points with at 4 or more hours of use (n=389). Conclusion Compared to prior works and the UAS cohort, this CPAP cohort was more likely to have normal ESS at baseline. UAS and CPAP both demonstrate a dose-response curve associating increasing hourly usage with larger ESS reductions. Abstract:
The quantification of root biomass and the assessment of its dynamics in forest ecosystems has been intensified due to its important role in carbon sequestration and storage and the possible consequences under climate change conditions. In general, biomass stocks between and within forest ecosystems are highly variable. It is necessary to study all the different components of vegetation, however, the vast majority of the works found in the literature, address only the biomass of the aerial part of the plants, with few studies involving the quantification of these stocks by the roots, in the different ecosystems. The present study objective quantify and classify a root biomass with a depth of 0 to 10 cm, and to monitor accumulated litter in the soil (litter pool), in two different regions, in the Pantanal (Acurizal) and in the Cerrado (Sensu stricto) Mato-Grossense. The root biomass was obtained by means of unformed soil samples (0-10 cm) and the roots were classified by diameter, with the aid of digital calipers, between thick (> 10 mm), medium (5-10 mm), slightly thin (2-5 mm) and fine (<2 mm). The samples collected monthly between August 2018 and July 2019. Was observed that in both areas, about 90% of the roots collected, were fine (<2 mm). The root density in Acurizal was on average 124.92 g/m² and in Sensu stricto it was on average 57.5 g/m². The difference in root density in the soil, between the two study areas, significant (p<0.05). However, there no significant difference in root density between the dry and wet periods in each area. The monthly average of litter pool in the area of Acurizal and Sensu stricto was, respectively: 526.52 g/m² and 588.96 g/m². In both areas, the accumulated litter was significantly different between periods of drought and precipitation.

Abstract:
The 8-queens problem of placing 8 non-attacking queens on an 8x8 chessboard is used to hide message in an image. The method helps in randomizing the bit selection in a cover image for hiding purpose. Cover image is divided into blocks of 8x1 bytes and then masked with solutions of the 8-queens problem. Bits from the block are collected corresponding to the 8-queen solution to make a 7 bit string. LSB of the block is not considered. It gives a number in the range of 0 to 127. If a bit string, corresponding to the 8-queens solutions, matches with ASCII code of the first character from message, the corresponding solution number of the 8-queens problem is encrypted using RC4, and the cipher is stored in first block of the cover. This encrypted value works as key. The solution number corresponding to next character is XORED with the key and the resultant value is embedded in the LSB of next block. The algorithm has been tested with cover of different image file formats like BMP, PNG and TIFF. The algorithm provides very good capacity, imperceptibility and robustness.

Abstract:
In the last decades, several engineering works have been developed in the Northeast of Brazil, a region marked by the occurrence of collapsible and expansive soils. This work aimed to characterize and study the behavior of two samples of residual soils collected in the municipality of Salgueiro-PE regarding their collapse potentials and shear strength parameters, in natural and disturbed conditions, evaluating the influence of the applied vertical stresses and the structural arrangement in these properties. The results obtained showed that the two samples analyzed show collapsible behavior, however, the observed potential for collapse was lower after the original structure arrangement was undone. From the direct shear strength tests, the strength parameters of the two soils were obtained, which pointed effective friction angle close to 30° and cohesive intercept close to 0 kPa. The destructuring of the samples did not cause a considerable variation in these parameters. Thus, it was possible to conclude that for these samples the microstructure has a predominant influence on the occurrence of collapsibility, but does not have the same relevance on the shear strength, such that the material’s destructuring can be considered as an effective measure to reduce the potential collapse.

Abstract:
Accurate determination of lattice parameters from X-ray diffraction requires that the diffraction angles be measured very precisely, and significant errors result if the sample–detector separation differs from that assumed. Transmission diffraction from bones, which have a complex cross section and must be left intact, is a situation where this separation is difficult to measure and it may differ from position to position across the specimen. This article describes a method for eliminating the effect of variable sample cross section. Diffraction patterns for each position on the specimen are collected before and after 180° rotation about an axis normal to the cross section of interest. This places the centroid of the diffracting mass at the center of rotation and provides the absolute lattice parameters from the average apparent lattice parameters at the two rotation angles. Diffraction patterns were collected across the cross section of three specimens: a 3D-printed elliptical cylinder of Hyperelastic Bone (HB), which is composed primarily of synthetic hydroxyapatite (hAp), a 3D-printed HB model of the second metacarpal bone (Mc2), and a modern human Mc2 containing nanocrystalline carbonated apatite (cAp). Rietveld refinement was used to determine precise unit-cell parameters a apparent and c apparent for each pattern of each scan, and these values determined the actual average 〈a〉 and 〈c〉 for each sample. The results indicate that the 0°/180° rotation method works well enough to uncover variations approaching 1 × 10−3 Å in cAp unit-cell parameters in intact bones with irregular cross sections.

Abstract:
Compressive sensing can guarantee the recovery accuracy of suitably constrained signals by using sampling rates much lower than the Nyquist limit. This is a leap from signal sampling to information sampling. The measurement matrix is key to implementation but limited in the acquisition systems. This article presents the critical elements of the direct under-sampling—compressive sensing (DUS–CS) method, constructing the under-sampling measurement matrix, combined with a priori information sparse representation and reconstruction, and we show how it can be physically implemented using dedicated hardware. To go beyond the Nyquist constraints, we show how to design and adjust the sampling time of the A/D circuit and how to achieve low-speed random non-uniform direct under-sampling. We applied our method to data measured with different compression ratios (volume ratios of collected data to original data). It is shown that DUS-CS works well when the SNR is 3 dB, 0 dB, −3 dB, and −5 dB and the compression ratio is 50%, 20%, and 10%, and this is validated with both simulation and actual measurements. The method we propose provides an effective way for compressed sensing theory to move toward practical field applications that use underwater echo signals.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the nutritional situation of children under five years old from both urban and rural areas of Colombia. METHOD: Analytical study, based on cross-sectional data, collected from ENSIN-2015. The sample consisted of 12,256 children aged between 0 and 4 years old. We calculated the prevalence ratios (PR) with their respective 95% confidence interval (95%CI). PR were assessed by binomial regression models with malnutrition or overweight as the dependent variable and geographic area as the explanatory variable. We used context variables to adjust the estimated PR and control the confounder within. RESULTS: Acute malnutrition (weight-for-height) had a prevalence of 1.6%, while overweight had a 5.6% rate. No differences per geographic zone in the weight-for-height indicator were found. Stunted growth – chronic malnutrition – was higher in the rural area (PR = 1.2; 95%CI 1–1.53; p = 0.050). Prevalences adjusted by variables related to structural, social and economic developement showed that both the household chief’s educational level and the food insecurity of the area account for malnutrition. CONCLUSION: The height-for-age indicator works better to establish development level. Measures against coverage, relevance and quality of education and access to food can harm the nutritional status of the children.

Acosta, Jesus A., and John F. Patience. "Insoluble dietary fiber does not affect the ability of phytase to release phosphorus from phytate in the diet of nursery pigs1." Journal of Animal Science 97, no. 8 (June 12, 2019): 3451–59. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/jas/skz194.

Abstract:
Abstract Phytase is added to swine diets to improve the utilization of phytate-bound P in swine diets. This provides financial and environmental benefits to the pig industry. However, it is unclear if phytase works equally well in all dietary circumstances. The objective of this experiment was to determine if insoluble fiber affects the efficacy of the phytase enzyme in nursery pigs when fed diets limiting in P content. A total of 480 pigs (initial BW 5.48 ± 0.14 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned (10 pigs per pen) to treatment within the block. A common nutrient-adequate diet was fed from days −14 to −5, and two basal P deficient diets (either a corn-soy diet containing 0.16% standardized total tract digestible [STTD] P [low insoluble fiber [LF]], or a corn-soybean meal plus 20% corn bran containing 0.14% STTD P [high insoluble fiber [HF]]) were fed from days −5 to 0 to acclimate pigs to a P deficient diet. From days 0 to 21, pigs received eight dietary treatments (six pens per treatment: n = 6). Experimental diets consisted of LF supplemented with one of four levels of added phytase (0, 109, 218, and 327 phytase units [FTU]/kg; Quantum Blue 5 G, AB Vista, Wiltshire, United Kingdom) expected to provide 0.16, 0.21, 0.26, and 0.31% STTD P, respectively, or HF supplemented with one of the same four levels of added phytase expected to provide 0.14, 0.19, 0.24, and 0.29% STTD P. Titanium dioxide was added to the diet at 0.4% as an indigestible marker. On day 21, one pig representing the average BW for each pen was euthanized, and fibulae were collected and analyzed for bone ash. Fecal samples were collected from each pen on days 19–20. Data were analyzed using PROC MIXED of SAS. There were no interactions between insoluble fiber and phytase for any of the variables evaluated. For days 0–21, adding phytase increased ADG (P < 0.001) with the response being linear (P < 0.001), whereas insoluble fiber decreased ADG (P = 0.033). There were no effects of phytase or insoluble fiber on ADFI (P = 0.381 and P = 0.632, respectively). Phytase improved G:F ratio (P < 0.001) with the response being linear (P < 0.001). Insoluble fiber tended to decrease G:F ratio (P = 0.097). Phytase increased bone ash (P = 0.005) with the response being linear (P = 0.001), but there was no effect of insoluble fiber (P = 0.949). Phytase did not affect the apparent total tract digestibility of DM, NDF, or ADF (P > 0.050), whereas insoluble fiber decreased the ATTD of DM (P < 0.001), NDF (P < 0.001), and ADF (P < 0.001). In conclusion, the addition of insoluble fiber did not affect the ability of phytase to improve growth performance and bone mineralization in nursery pigs fed a P deficient diet.
