This paper provides an account of the nature and development of tax law. The author argues that tax law touches human activities to the extent that it is an accurate predictor of human and corporate behaviour. The paper examines several prominent tax cases, including Sir Ivor Richardson's involvement in the Duke of Westminster, Europa Oil and Re Securitibank decisions. In particular, the author discusses Sir Ivor's "no halfway house" rule (which focuses on the true nature of any given transaction by a consideration of the legal character of the agreement which embodies the transaction). Contrary to general traditional belief, the origins of collecting, as a systematic activity that refers to the satisfaction of symbolic rather than actual needs, was not an invention of the Renaissance. Collecting made its first appearance in European prehistory, was a subject of interest and debate for the ancient Greeks and Romans, and has been present continuously ever since. This thesis aims to address a gap in the history of collecting and to contribute to the discussion of its origins and nature through an analysis of collecting in the classical Graeco-Roman world. The aim of the workshop was to collect expert opinions related to the changes in the recreational use of nature, the monitoring needs related to the changing visitations, and to discuss the possibilities of variou

Abstract:
This project seeks to (1) build a learner corpus of English writing by collecting sample language data at Primary 6, Secondary 4, and Junior College 2 levels; (2) generate linguistic profiles for these stages and analyze/compare lexical, grammatical and discoursal features across these stages to track the development of English writing; (3) inform the learning, teaching and curriculum design of English writing; and (4) contribute to the theorization on the nature of writing development (Christie & Derewianka, 2008). It attempts to answer the following research questions: 1. What are the le

Abstract:
International and domestic policymakers have long assumed that informal economies represent an ‘untapped goldmine’ for government coffers. While recent research has highlighted that many informal businesses do pay a range of formal and informal taxes, there has, to date, been little systematic account of their tax burdens. Using a novel dataset of 2,700 informal enterprises in the Accra metropolitan area, we explore the nature and impact of taxation in the informal sector. We find that the majority of informal sector operators pay a range of taxes and fees, which together amount to a significa

Abstract:
The seabed of Halifax Harbour contains a variety of features that can be classified into natural and anthropogenic features. Natural features are formed by nature and consist of bedforms such as sand waves, sedimentary furrows, boulder berms, moraines, pockmarks, etc. Anthropogenic features are those formed by human activity and include anchor marks, cables, shipwrecks, dredge spoils, bridge and dock remains, etc. The anthropogenic imprint on the Harbour bottom is very dense, particularly in the inner Harbour, and makes the collection of natural unaffected seabed samples difficult. Abstract:
Fossil Point is an exceptionally rich and scientifically important fossil locality found in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. The rocks at Fossil Point are known for their abundant and well-preserved Middle Jurassic invertebrate fossils, including bivalves, ammonites, and belemnites. The abundance and quality, as well as the relatively easy coastal access, makes the fossils at Fossil Point vulnerable to unauthorized collection. Anecdotal evidence suggests that collection without a permit is occurring at Fossil Point and has been for decades. Monitoring of the prevalence and scale of unaut
