In this paper, we review existing classification techniques and suggest an entirely new procedure for the classification of high-dimensional vectors on the basis of a few training samples. The proposed method is based on the Bayesian paradigm and provides posterior probabilities that a new vector belongs to each of the classes, therefore it adapts naturally to any number of classes. Our classification technique is based on a small vector which is related to the projection of the observation onto the space spanned by the training samples. Statistics
Ph.D.
Most distribution free nonparametric methods depend on the ranks or orderings of the individual observations. This dissertation develops methods for the situation when there is only partial information about the ranks available. A random-linear-extension exact test and an empirical version of the random-linear-extension test are proposed as a new way to compare groups of data with partial orders. The basic computation procedure is to generate all possible permutations constrained by the known partial order using a randomization method similar in nature to multiple impu

Psychology
Ph.D.
As research on nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is in its beginning stages, relatively little is known about the variables that confer risk for this class of behaviors. Although recent work has implicated the role of childhood maltreatment in the development of NSSI, this body of literature is hampered by several important limitations. These limitations include either grouping together all forms of maltreatment (i.e., emotional, physical, and sexual abuse) or focusing on only one form of maltreatment. In addition, there is a paucity of research exploring the mechanisms by

Psychology
Ph.D.
Clinicians and researchers have identified a pattern of "mixed" symptoms that are sometimes exhibited by individuals with bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs). However, the criteria for these mixed states as outlined by the American Psychological Association have been criticized for being too stringent for most individuals that experience impairing episodes of mixed symptomatology (e.g., Akiskal, 1996). Mixed states are associated with a more impairing course of illness and suicidality. More research is needed on mixed states, and there is particularly little evidence for r

Abstract:
In this work, the design and application of Polynomial-Based Filters (PBF) for continuously variable Sample Rate Conversion (SRC) is studied. The major contributions of this work are summarized as follows. First, an explicit formula for the Fourier Transform of both a symmetrical and nonsymmetrical PBF impulse response with variable basis function coefficients is derived. In the literature only one explicit formula is given, and that for a symmetrical even length filter with fixed basis function coefficients. The frequency domain optimization of PBFs via linear programming has been proposed in

Quantification of groundwater-surface water exchange and the role of hyporheic flow in this exchange is increasingly of interest to a wide range of disciplines (e.g., hydrogeology, geochemistry, biology, ecology). The most direct method to quantify groundwater-surface water exchange is a seepage meter, first developed in the 1940s. Widespread use of the traditional 1970s-era 55-gallon half-barrel seepage meter has shown that the method is subject to potential errors, particularly in flowing waters (e.g., streams, rivers, tidal zones). This study presents two new direct seepage measurement

Determining mafic mineral composition of asteroid bodies is a topic reviewed by M.J. Gaffey et al. (2002). The iterative procedure discussed can be implemented as an algorithm, and such efforts revealed weaknesses that are examined in this work. We seek to illustrate the limits of this method and graphically determine its predictions. There are boundaries in the formulae given where the equations break down. In ranges where mafic mixtures are predicted, a method is illustrated that allows a decoupling of these mixtures into the constituents.
M.S.
Department of Physics
Sciences
Phys
