Full textThis thesis deals with French children’s picture book series since the 1960s. It highlights the difficulties to bridge creation and edition while providing an analysis of editorial creativity. After mentionning historical models of children’s series, we describe the evolution of series models (chapter 1 and 2). We show that this evolution was not without challenges. In the 60s and 70s, some authors and illustrators were craving for more legitimacy (chapter 3). At the same period, Ruy Vidal’s editorial career as publisher and editor allows us to discover the difficulties to introduce editorial innovations (chapter 4). It is then necessary to study the editorial conditions for creativity (chapter 5, 6, 7) through the examples of « Studio Delpire » (we wonder about his editorial « eye » and about the creative function of the editorial team), O. Douzou (Rouergue) (the question here is : what does an author-illustrator-editor provide ?), J. Magnani, a contemporary publisher (who tries to go beyond the frontier between children’s and adult’s books). All in all, these elements will help us discover ways to think of and analyze editorial creativity. The thesis is based on unexplored archives and numerous interviews with actors of the children’s picture books field

Full textIn this thesis the goal is to understand and explain the mutual reliance between the evolution of the way editors classified children’s books and the creation of an autonomous and integrated editorial subfield which have a major role in the process of legitimating children literature. In this study I will work on two countries – France and Spain – to reestablish the evolution of the children’s book publishing from both a national and transnational perspectives. I will study the systems used to classify children’s books in two national subfiels and two linguistic areas. This research will offer a historical sociology of culture approach and a sociology of classification approach. This analysis will be comparative, entangled and transnational. It will focus on the logics and the strategies of the children’s book publishers to impose categories that would spread inside – and beyond – nation-states, taking into account their space of possibles as much inside the publishing house as on the publishing market. I am going to analyse the classification systems to better understand the cultural and editorial markets. I will also study the origin of the children’s book representations and social practices. I will try to understand the interaction of symbolic and economic strategies that are built on a social construction around the value of a product

Full textWhether it is thanks to novels, children’s picture books or comics, children’s literature readership is oftentimes presented maps that work as much as narrative spatializations as spatialised narrations. The examination of the Jeanne Cappe Collection, which gathers published works from the end of the 1940s to the mid-1970s, and the examination of contemporary productions, attest that maps travel across children’s literature’s history and genres.The synchronic and diachronic perspectives, as well as the literary and iconographic approaches, improved with geography, cartographic and art histories quotation, not only make it possible to create a cartography of the map in children’s literature, but also to try and single out its rhetorical, aesthetic and imaginary purposes.In the end, what does the literary map in children’s literature reveal and, on the contrary, what does children’s literature do to literary maps?The first chapter deals with the map’s educational function, discussing the transmission of geographic knowledge in several genres (school novels, atlas, travel stories, and adventure novels). The cartographic writing of the history is also studied, especially how children’s literature uses the map as a historical narrative device within historical novels, among other genres.The second chapter focuses on the map materiality, so as to highlight its connexion with cartography history and artistic cartography. Studying the map’s physical identity reveals how numerous are the interactions in which bodies and senses – the characters’, thanks to the cartographic experience dramatization – and the readers’, handling, manipulating and checking the map – and text-shaped system) are remarkably stirred.The third chapter analyses the map as translated into images, symbols, words or settings. Observing that the world is shaped into a kind of representation leads to question the very notion of verisimilitude and the use of the cartographic language in literary maps. It shows the way to examine the literary imaginary presence within the cartographic imaginary. The map turned into literature is eventually discussed as an expression of how literature expands onto the map territory.Being cross-disciplinary, the rhetorical, aesthetic and imaginary discussions are to be found in all of three chapters : for it deals with literary maps, the question of language – of languages, since they achieve the convergence of both the cartographic language and the literary language – is at the heart of interactions between discursive objectives, style, materiality and imaginary of the map

Full textYouth literature offers young boys and girls a space for recognition and differentiation, thus constituting an important vector of socialization and cultural identity development. Through the text-image combination, the reader forges his / her identity affiliation, and questions his / her representations of the Other and the world in its plurality. As is the case of the Moroccan society, the editions of the third millennium are characterized by a great cultural and linguistic diversity. Young people who were immersed in a foreign bookish culture during the last century could find in the new productions a reference point in relation to their social environment. However, the representations vehicled by the literature of youth engender several problems not only at the level of reception of these books and in the relationship of young Moroccans to reading because of the plurality, but also sometimes at the level of the discordance and incongruity that may exist between different cultural and economic approaches, and those that emerge - explicitly or implicitly - from the works and albums taken into consideration. By choosing to analyze a corpus belonging to the Moroccan youth literature and by privileging the categories - surely problematic - of cultural "identity" and "diversity", we wanted to place this object of study at the heart of a society where the legacy of the past cohabit side by side with modern space-world, where linguistic wealth and cultural abundance are sources of fruitful questions but which also sometimes struggle to find an answer

Full textHow to innovate while maintaning continuity in the early 1980s for a children's books publisher (François Faucher et Flammarion) specialized in picture books since the creation in 1931 ? This thesis aims at confronting the objectives with the reality of the corpus studied, spanning for a decade, centered on a given book series, Castor Poche, whose purpose has been to establish a link between picture books and adult literature. It analyzes the movement towards a legitimate textual content for a publishing house traditionally focused on the album : if image gives way to text, how does it happen ? Is it done well ? What does it mean for the publisher and how does he justify it ? This confrontation is studied within a given competitive environment, on the basis of available archives, data and statisticx, with a wiew to shedding light on one of the principal stakes in today's publishing world, i.
