Abstract During the 1980s and 1990s, a slowdown in federal and state support for the care of the poor and decreasing reimbursements for the privately insured led to an increase in uncompensated care costs for American hospitals. To recoup some of their debts, hospitals and doctors’ offices began to provide less charity-care, turned more patients away at their doors (particularly Black patients and pregnant women), and relied increasingly on collections agencies. Initially, hospitals were wary of sending bills to collections, in part for fear of bad press, but soon the practice became common th

It designates slavery a sexual economy to foreground slavery's gender hierarchies and mechanisms of subordination as well as to show how slavery offered early illustrations of the social construction and fluidity of gender and the

This wealth of recently unearthed documents and films has revealed a lot about the everyday experiences of silent-era Black moviegoers. As this chapter affirms, these artifacts complicate previously held notions about the ways gender, sexuality, class, and religion intersected with Black cinema culture at the time. Are such examples evidence of mistakes or are they deliberate manipulations of empty space? Texts printed with conspicuous gaps operated as invitations to the reader to supplement what seems to have been mislaid or (perhaps) was never confected in the first place. The use of lunulae or empty brackets in stage plays and poetry is explored, which, in turn, helps to contextualize the gap found at the e

Free people of color, in particular, repeatedly extended loans in various amounts to both white and black people. When the sums went unpaid, free black creditors sued borrowers to recoup the money owed. In the Natchez district, a world in which blackness symbolized dependency and whiteness independence, white debtors were bound to black creditors.
