Abstract:
Dion Boucicault’s three Irish plays: The Colleen Bawn (1860), Arrah-na-Pogue (1864) and The Shaughraun (1874), while not critically significant, owe their perennial popularity to their appeal to Irish romantic nationalism and to their memorable character types. While Boucicault’s character Myles Murphy or Myles na gCopaleen (Myles of the Ponies), an example of his native Irish hero, was the first of a series of rogue heroes that John Millington Synge developed in his character of Christy Mahon, Boucicault also owes the character of Myles to American native heroes like Sam Patch, Davy Crockett and Mose the Bowery B’hoy. While the plays are not great drama, they are good theatre and a less self-conscious national theatre has found room for both Boucicault and Synge.

Abstract:
The inspiration for Dion Boucicault's first Irish subject, The Colleen Bawn, in a set of pictur esque views of Ireland after the artist W. H. Bartlett is well documented, and Bartlett's iconography of wild scenery, moonlight, round towers, and ruined abbeys features strongly throughout the Irish plays. Although Bartlett's compositions were widely known in the nineteenth century, there has been little consideration of how they may have informed the audience's understanding of the plays. Rather, they are regarded as a set of clichéd, stereotyped images, which the playwright subverted through a process of ironic distancing and repurposing. In this article Patricia Smyth argues that, on the contrary, Boucicault made use of the mythical and supernatural associations of picturesque Ireland in order to convey a particular narrative of Irish history. Patricia Smyth is a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Warwick. She has published articles and book chapters on French and British nineteenth-century art, visual culture and theatre. She is co-editor of Nineteenth-Century Theatre and Film, co-edited with Jim Davis a special issue dedicated to theatrical iconography (2012), and is currently completing a book on Paul Delaroche and theatre.

Abstract:
The 2000 land reform programme implemented by the government of Zimbabwe came with an initiative of acquiring enormous hectares of white-owned farmland and distributing it on a massive scale to small-scale farmers. Indeed the greater part of the land was taken from the white commercial farmers and distributed to the majority black Zimbabweans, leaving only a small share of the farmland in the hands of the whites. The land reform programme, undoubtedly, benefited Zimbabweans. In Zimbabwe, especially in mining areas, there are classes of Zimbabweans, those who originate from Zimbabwe, as well as those who are of foreign origin, but are Zimbabweans by birth. Zimbabweans by birth who are of foreign origin occupied an allocated A2 farm, Capital Block, located near a cement mining area, Colleen Bawn. Most of them were of Malawian origin, and the area is now popularly known as ‘New Malawi’. This study sought to investigate how Zimbabweans of foreign origin benefited from the 2000 land reform programme. The article further sought to reveal the diverse farming systems as well as Indigenous Knowledge (IK), which were passed on from the forefathers who were born in Malawi, but migrated to Zimbabwe’s mining areas in search for employment in the then Rhodesia around 1960. A qualitative methodology was used in this research, in which oral history interviews were conducted with the people living in the area of the ‘New Malawi’. The study revealed that most of the land was being used for farming purposes. Beneficiaries of the programme had become self-dependent. The study further revealed that there was knowledge sharing among the beneficiaries of different foreign origins including Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana and those of Zimbabwean origin. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that the programme benefited a number of people of foreign origins who were now Zimbabweans by birth and Zimbabweans by both birth and origin were happy with these people benefiting, a situation which shows the extent to which Zimbabweans are tolerant of foreigners.

Abstract:
Although affirmative action in college admissions is constitutionally permissible, several states prohibit it. We investigate whether bans push black and Latino students from in-state public selective colleges to other types of postsecondary institutions, thus contributing to talent loss among these groups. Unlike most other studies, we analyze national data (the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009) so that we can follow students across state lines. We find no evidence that students from ban states shift from one type of selective college to another; that is, from in-state public flagships to in-state private ones or selective colleges in other states. However, the odds of attending a nonselective college, instead of an in-state public selective college, are almost three times higher among blacks and Latinos in ban states compared with their counterparts in states without bans. We argue that bans on affirmative action may contribute to talent loss among black and Latino students.

Abstract:
The fibrillar collagen network is postulated to be a primary determinant of left ventricular diastolic stiffness. This hypothesis was tested by examining the structural and physiological effects of a reduction in fibrillar collagen content and cross-linking in the intact left ventricle. Collagen cross-linking was inhibited by treating five normal adult pigs with beta-aminopropionitrile (BAPN; 10 g/day po) for 6 wk; five normal untreated pigs served as controls. Left ventricular volume, mass, and function were determined by simultaneous echocardiography and catheterization. Chamber stiffness, defined by pressure vs. volume data, and myocardial stiffness, defined by stress vs. dimension data, were determined from variably loaded beats during dextran infusion. Collagen distribution (% area) and integrity (% confluence) were determined by light microscopy. Collagen content was measured by hydroxyproline assay, and collagen cross-linking was measured by salt extraction. BAPN decreased collagen distribution (% area decreased from 12 +/- 1% in control to 7 +/- 1% in BAPN, P < 0.05), collagen integrity (% confluence decreased from 8 +/- 1% in control to 4 +/- 1% in BAPN, P < 0.05), collagen content (from 36 +/- 2 mg/g dry wt in control to 27 +/- 2 mg/g dry wt in BAPN, P < 0.05), and collagen cross-linking (extractable collagen increased from 21 +/- 2% in control to 28 +/- 2% in BAPN, P < 0.05). BAPN decreased chamber stiffness (0.13 +/- 0.02 in control to 0.06 +/- 0.01 in BAPN, P < 0.05) and myocardial stiffness (10.4 +/- 0.5 in control to 6.6 +/- 0.5 in BAPN, P < 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract:
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is important for many events during embryonic development. An important component of the ECM in sea urchin embryos is collagen. Collagen has been identified in the basal lamina of sea urchin embryos by morphological and immunological criteria. Recently, the need for a crosslinked collagenous matrix in the basal lamina during sea urchin embryogenesis has been demonstrated using β–aminoproprionitrile (BAPN). BAPN is a specific inhibitor of lysyl oxidase, an enzyme involved in collagen crosslinking. BAPN treatment causes completely reversible developmental arrest at the early gastrula stage, or supression of mesenchyme cell motility and archenteron elongation, depending on the time of addition of the drug. BAPN also significantly decreases the extent of collagen crosslinking, based on solubility assays. This study examines fine structural changes in cellular morphology and motility and the three-dimensional structure of the ECM induced by BAPN treatment during gastrulation and larva formation in the sea urchin embryo.

Abstract:
Hypoxic pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is associated with pulmonary artery (PA) remodeling and right ventricular (RV) overload. We have previously uncovered collagen-mediated mechanisms of proximal PA stiffening in early HPH by manipulating collagen degradation and cross-linking using a transgenic mouse strain and a potent collagen cross-link inhibitor, β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN). However, the roles of collagen in distal PA remodeling, overall RV afterload, and RV hypertrophy in HPH remain unknown. Here, we used the same experimental strategy to investigate the effect of pulmonary vascular collagen content and cross-linking on steady and pulsatile RV afterload and on RV hypertrophy in early HPH. Collagenase-resistant mice (Col1a1R/R) and their littermate controls (Col1a1+/+) were exposed to normobaric hypoxia for 10 days with or without BAPN treatment. In vivo pulmonary vascular impedance, a comprehensive measure of RV afterload, was measured via simultaneous RV catheterization and echocardiography. Morphology and collagen accumulation were examined using histological techniques and ELISA in lungs and RVs. In both mouse strains, BAPN did not limit increases in pulmonary arterial pressure or pulmonary vascular resistance, indicating a negligible effect of either collagen content or cross-linking on steady RV afterload. However, BAPN prevented the increase in pulse pressure and RV hypertrophy in Col1a1+/+ mice and these effects were absent in Col1a1R/R mice, suggesting a role for PA collagen content, not cross-linking, in the pulsatile RV afterload. Moreover, we found a significant correlation between pulse pressure and RV hypertrophy, indicating an important role for pulsatile RV afterload in RV overload in early HPH. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The present study found an important role for collagen content, but not collagen cross-linking, in the pulsatile right ventricular (RV) afterload, which is correlated with RV hypertrophy. These results uncover a new collagen-mediated mechanical mechanism of RV dysfunction in early pulmonary hypertension progression. Furthermore, our results suggest that measures and metrics of pulsatile hemodynamics such as pulse pressure and pulse wave velocity are potentially important to cardiovascular mortality in patients with pulmonary hypertension.

Abstract:
The influence of the extracellular matrix (ECM) on differential gene expression during sea urchin development was explored using cell-type-specific cDNA probes. The ECM of three species of sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus, Lytechinus variegatus and Lytechinus pictus, was disrupted with the lathrytic agent beta-aminopropionitrile (BAPN), which inhibits collagen deposition in the ECM and arrests gastrulation (Wessel & McClay, Devl Biol. 121: 149, 1987). The levels of several mRNAs (Spec 1, Spec 2, CyIIa actin, CyIIIa actin and collagen in S. purpuratus, and metallothionine, ubiquitin and LpS3 in L. pictus and L. variegatus) were compared in BAPN-treated and control embryos. These mRNAs accumulated normally during BAPN treatment, even though the embryos did not gastrulate. To determine if the expression of any gene product is sensitive to ECM disruption, a differential cDNA screen compared poly (A+) RNA from BAPN-arrested and control embryos in Lytechinus. A cDNA clone was isolated from this screen that represented a 2.1 kb mRNA that did not accumulate during BAPN treatment. Removal of BAPN resulted in the accumulation of this transcript coincident with the onset of gastrulation. This cDNA clone encodes a L. variegatus homologue of LpS1, recently demonstrated to be an ancestral homologue of the aboral ectoderm-specific Spec 1-Spec 2 gene family in S. purpuratus. Nuclear run-on assays in L. pictus suggested that transcriptional activity of LpS1 was selectively inhibited by BAPN treatment. Thus, although the accumulation of many gene products occurred independently of the embryonic collagenous matrix, the accumulation of LpS1 and LvS1 appeared to be mediated by the ECM.

Abstract:
Women are more likely to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture than men, and the incidence of ACL rupture in women rises with increasing estrogen levels. We used an engineered ligament model to determine how an acute rise in estrogen decreases the mechanical properties of ligaments. Using fibroblasts isolated from human ACLs from male or female donors, we engineered ligaments and determined that ligaments made from female ACL cells had more collagen and were equal in strength to those made from male ACL cells. We then treated engineered ligaments for 14 days with low (5 pg/ml), medium (50 pg/ml), or high (500 pg/ml) estrogen, corresponding to the range of in vivo serum estrogen concentrations and found that collagen within the grafts increased without a commensurate increase in mechanical strength. Mimicking the menstrual cycle, with 12 days of low estrogen followed by 2 days of physiologically high estrogen, resulted in a decrease in engineered ligament mechanical function with no change in the amount of collagen in the graft. The decrease in mechanical stiffness corresponded with a 61.7 and 76.9% decrease in the activity of collagen cross-linker lysyl oxidase with 24 and 48 h of high estrogen, respectively. Similarly, grafts treated with the lysyl oxidase inhibitor β-aminoproprionitrile (BAPN) for 24 h showed a significant decrease in ligament mechanical strength [control (CON) = 1.58 ± 0.06 N; BAPN = 1.06 ± 0.13 N] and stiffness (CON = 7.7 ± 0.46 MPa; BAPN = 6.1 ± 0.71 MPa) without changing overall collagen levels (CON = 396 ± 11.5 μg; BAPN = 382 ± 11.6 μg). Together, these data suggest that the rise in estrogen during the follicular phase decreases lysyl oxidase activity in our engineered ligament model and if this occurs in vivo may decrease the stiffness of ligaments and contribute to the elevated rate of ACL rupture in women.

Abstract:
In White Noise (1985) by Don DeLillo, two characters visit a famous barn, described as the “most photographed barn in America” alongside hordes of picture-taking tourists. One of them complains the barn has become a simulacrum, so that “no one sees” the actual barn anymore. This implies that there was once a real barn, which has been lost in the “virtual” image. This is in line with Plato’s concept of the simulacrum as a false or “corrupt” copy, which has lost all connection with the “original.” Plotinus, however, offered a different definition: the simulacrum distorts reality in order to reveal the invisible, the Ideal. There is a real building which has been called “the most photographed barn in America”: the Thomas Moulton Barn in the Grand Teton National Park. The location—barn in the foreground, mountain range towering over it—forms a striking visual composition. But the site is not only famous because it is photogenic. Images of the barn in part evoke the heroic struggles of pioneers living on the frontier. They also draw on the tradition of the “American sublime.” Ralph Waldo Emerson defined the sublime as “the influx of the Divine mind into our mind.” He followed Plotinus in valuing art as a means of “revelation”—with the artist as a kind of prophet or “seer.” The photographers who collect at the Moulton Barn are themselves consciously working within this tradition, and turning themselves into do-it-yourself “artist-seers.” They are the creators, not the slaves of the simulacrum.

Abstract:
Abstract Controlling platelet function is central to management of various pathologies, including Primary Myelofibrosis (PMF), which is associated with increased incidence of thrombosis and cardiovascular disease. In recent studies we showed that the matrix cross-linking enzyme, Lysyl Oxidase (LOX) is elevated in platelets and megakartocytes of myelofibrotic mice, and transgenic upregulation of LOX increases platelet and megakaryocyte adhesion to monomeric type I collagen (preferred by alpha2β1 collagen receptors), and augments propensity for in vivo thrombosis. Here, we examined the relevance of these findings to human disease, by first determining platelet LOX level, as well as platelet and megakaryocyte adhesion to collagen using samples derived from PMF patients and matching controls. In analyzing 10 PMF platelet samples (5 males and 5 females; 6 JAK2V617F; 4 CALR mutations; age range 30-55; PMF grade 1-3), we found a nearly 20 fold upregulation of LOX expression compared to matching healthy controls (p<0.001). Intriguingly, there was a significant increase in adhesion (plt/mm2) and spreading (pixel2) of PMF platelets relative to control on monomeric, pepsinated acid soluble collagen (PSCI) (p<0.05), while no differences were observed between the samples on native triple helical acid soluble collagen type I collagen (ASCI). To examine the role of LOX in this phenotype, we treated control and PMF-derived human megakaryocytes, differentiated from peripheral blood CD34+ cells, grown in presence or not of LOX inhibitor, β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) from day 2 of culture. Our preliminary data, based on a cohort of 2 controls and 5 PMF samples, demonstrated that although on ASCI megakaryocyte adhesion is not altered by BAPN treatment both in CTRL and PMF derived megakaryocytes, on PSCI the adhesion of PMF derived megakaryocytes was reduced by about a 50% by BAPN treatment, while the adhesion of CTRL derived MKs was not significantly affected. Taken together, we identified LOX level to be upregulated in human PMF platelets and megakaryocytes, and LOX activity to be important for PMF cells adhesion to collagen. These newly identified properties are highly relevant to megakaryocyte adhesion to the niche, and to platelet activation in PMF. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract:
We investigated the physical role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in vascular homeostasis in the basal chordate Botryllus schlosseri, which has a large, transparent, extracorporeal vascular network encompassing an area >100 cm2. We found that the collagen cross-linking enzyme lysyl oxidase is expressed in all vascular cells and that in vivo inhibition using β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN) caused a rapid, global regression of the entire network, with some vessels regressing >10 mm within 16 h. BAPN treatment changed the ultrastructure of collagen fibers in the vessel basement membrane, and the kinetics of regression were dose dependent. Pharmacological inhibition of both focal adhesion kinase (FAK) and Raf also induced regression, and levels of phosphorylated FAK in vascular cells decreased during BAPN treatment and FAK inhibition but not Raf inhibition, suggesting that physical changes in the vessel ECM are detected via canonical integrin signaling pathways. Regression is driven by apoptosis and extrusion of cells through the basal lamina, which are then engulfed by blood-borne phagocytes. Extrusion and regression occurred in a coordinated manner that maintained vessel integrity, with no loss of barrier function. This suggests the presence of regulatory mechanisms linking physical changes to a homeostatic, tissue-level response.

Abstract:
Background: Nepal as a signatory to Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2003 has passed a new tobacco control bill entitled “Tobacco product control and regulatory bill, 2010” in 2011. On this background, it is imperative to assess the knowledge and attitude of people towards this new regulation that forbids smoking in public places.Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 394 students of higher secondary level in three randomly selected colleges of Kathmandu district, Nepal. Information on respondents’ awareness on current ban, source of information, implementation status and their attitude towards the new regulation were collected using self-administered questionnaire. Analysis of quantitative data was done using descriptive statistics whereas qualitative data were analyzed manually. Results: Majority of respondents (79.9%) said that there is ban on smoking in public places in Nepal. The most common source of information was television (72.3%), followed by friends (36.5%) and family members (33.9 %). Most of the respondents (67.4%) had frequently seen people smoking in public places and 48.8% had not seen or heard any penalty given to those people. Overall, 74.1% of the participants stated that the ban on smoking in public places was a ‘very good thing’. Majority of those who viewed that the ban was good, reasoned ‘it will protect people from diseases like cancer’. Those who viewed that the ban was not good, reasoned ‘people cannot be changed by compelling’ and ‘to smoke or not to smoke is people’s own will’.Conclusion: This study shows that majority of adolescents are aware of and have positive attitude towards new regulation on smoking ban in public places in Nepal. There is need of implementing the policy strictly by raising awareness among people and penalizing those who violate it.

Abstract:
This study examined trends in stimulant use and attitudes towards use among American collegiate hockey athletes. All 139 players in one college hockey conference completed a comprehensive questionnaire. Over half of the athletes (51.8%) confrmed stimulant use before a hockey game or practice. About half of the respondents (48.5%) reported having used ephedra at least one time to improve athletic performance. Additionally, 17.4% reported using pseudoephedrine to improve performance in the 30 days prior to survey administration. Over half (55.4%) were aware of the recent national ban on ephedra. Fifty-nine% stated the national ban made them less likely to use ephedra products. The majority of athletes began use prior to college. Coaches, athletic trainers, and team physicians should be aware of athletes’ patterns of stimulant use. Improved educational efforts directed at younger athletes are necessary to deter abuse of metabolic stimulants.

Abstract:
Background: The Government of Karnataka banned loose cigarettes sale effect from September 2017 and is punishable under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) with fine and imprisonment in case of violation. Aim & Objective: Study aims to assess awareness, perceptions and practices about ban among tobacco vendors and smokers. Methods and Material: Cross sectional survey was carried using pre-tested questionnaire to collect information regarding awareness about ban among vendors and smokers. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 15.0. Results: Ninety-five percent of the tobacco vendors continued to sell loose cigarettes despite the ban. Among vendors, 49.7%, were aware of ban and of them 53.5% knew it is a punishable offense. Vendors opined that they would stop selling loose cigarettes if ban is strictly enforced with frequent checks on periodical basis. One-fourth smokers opined they will reduce cigarettes consumption with few making an attempt to quit. Conclusions: Awareness about ban on sale of loose cigarettes was unsatisfactory among vendors and smokers including lack of knowledge regarding legal actions in case of violation. However, vendors responded favorably towards obeying the law. Smokers are likely to reduce or even quit smoking if the law is strictly enforced which highlights the need for creating awareness drives and strong enforcement of the policy.

Abstract:
Background: South Africa temporarily banned alcohol and tobacco sales for about 20 weeks during the COVID-19 lockdown. We described changes in alcohol and tobacco consumption after implementation of these restrictions among a small number of participants in a tuberculosis treatment cohort. Method: The timeline follow-back procedure and Fägerstrom test for nicotine dependence was used to collect monthly alcohol and tobacco use information. We report changes in heavy drinking days (HDD), average amount of absolute alcohol (AA) consumed per drinking day, and cigarettes smoked daily during the alcohol and tobacco ban compared to use prior to the ban. Results: Of the 61 participants for whom we have pre-ban and within-ban alcohol use information, 17 (27.9%) reported within-ban alcohol use. On average, participants reported one less HDD per fortnight (interquartile range (IQR): −4, 1), but their amount of AA consumed increased by 37.4 g per drinking occasion (IQR: −65.9 g, 71.0 g). Of 53 participants who reported pre-ban tobacco use, 17 (32.1%) stopped smoking during the ban. The number of participants smoking >10 cigarettes per day decreased from 8 to 1. Conclusions: From these observations, we hypothesize that policies restricting alcohol and tobacco availability seem to enable some individuals to reduce their consumption. However, these appear to have little effect on the volume of AA consumed among individuals with more harmful patterns of drinking in the absence of additional behavior change interventions.

Abstract:
BackgroundSecondhand smoke (SHS) in US casinos is common, but little is known about the residue of tobacco smoke pollutants left behind in dust and on surfaces, commonly referred to as thirdhand smoke (THS). We examined SHS and THS pollution and exposure before and during a casino smoking ban and after smoking resumed.MethodsA casino was visited nine times over a 15-month period to collect dust, surface and air samples in eight locations. Finger wipe and urine samples were collected from non-smoking confederates before and after a 4-hour casino visit. Samples were analysed for markers of SHS and THS pollution and exposure.ResultsExceptionally high levels of THS were found in dust and on surfaces. Although the smoking ban led to immediate improvements in air quality, surface nicotine levels were unchanged and remained very high for the first month of the smoking ban. Surface nicotine decreased by 90% after 1 month (P<0.01), but nicotine and tobacco-specific nitrosamines in dust decreased more slowly, declining by 90% only after 3 months (P<0.01). Exposure was significantly reduced after the ban, but the benefits of the ban were reversed after smoking resumed.ConclusionsLong-term smoking in a casino creates deep THS reservoirs that persist for months after a smoking ban. A complete smoking ban immediately improves air quality and significantly reduces exposure to SHS and THS. However, THS reservoirs contribute to continued low-level exposure to toxicants. To accelerate the effect of smoking bans, remediation efforts should address specific THS reservoirs, which may require intensive cleaning as well as replacement of carpets, furniture and building materials.

Although teenagers may begin smoking to enhance their social image, there is little evidence about how nonsmokers feel about their smoking peers or about nonsmokers' attitudes toward exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, so a 22-item questionnaire was administered to 547 nonsmoking college students. They reported that they were less likely to want a smoker for a roommate, date, or potential spouse. Most nonsmokers were bothered a great deal by environmental cigarette smoke and would want a smoke-free residence if living with a smoker. Almost all nonsmokers felt that environmental tobacco smoke increases the risk of serious disease. 92% strongly supported a ban on smoking in university classroom buildings and increased taxes on cigarettes.

Abstract:
Abstract Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most frequent primary malignant bone tumor in urgent need of better therapies. Using genetically modified mouse models (GEMMs), we demonstrate that Wnt signaling promotes c-Fos-induced OS formation via the actions of the collagen-modifying enzyme Loxl2. c-Fos/AP-1 directly regulates the expression of the Wnt ligands Wnt7b and Wnt9a in OS cells through promoter binding, and Wnt7b and Wnt9a in turn promote Loxl2 expression in murine and human OS cells through the transcription factors Zeb1 and Zeb2. Concordantly, inhibition of Wnt ligand secretion by inactivating the Wnt-less (Wls) gene in osteoblasts in c-Fos GEMMs either early or in a therapeutic setting reduces Loxl2 expression and progression of OS. Wls-deficient osteosarcomas proliferate less, are less mineralized and are enriched in fibroblastic cells surrounded by collagen fibers. Importantly, Loxl2 inhibition using either the pan-Lox inhibitor BAPN or a specific inducible shRNA reduces OS cell proliferation in vitro and decreases tumor growth and lung colonization in murine and human orthotopic OS transplantation models. Finally, OS development is delayed in c-Fos GEMMs treated with BAPN or with specific Loxl2 blocking antibodies. Congruently, a strong correlation between c-FOS, LOXL2 and WNT7B/WNT9A expression is observed in human OS samples, and c-FOS/LOXL2 co-expression correlates with OS aggressiveness and decreased patient survival. Therefore, therapeutic targeting of Wnt and/or Loxl2 should be considered to potentiate the inadequate current treatments for pediatric, recurrent, and metastatic OS.

Abstract:
The prevalence of electronic cigarette use is increasing, particularly among youth. This recent trend is troubling given that electronic cigarette use is associated with future cigarette smoking. Here, we assessed the prevalence of cigarette smoking and use of electronic cigarettes among college students before and after implementation of a university-wide smoking ban on campus. We found that after the smoking ban was implemented, the prevalence of self-reported combustible cigarette smoking decreased (12% versus 7%; unadjusted: OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.34, 0.89, p = 0.015), but we did not observe a difference in the prevalence of electronic cigarette use (26.3% versus 27.5%; unadjusted: OR = 1.06, 95% CI = 0.78, 1.43, p = 0.699). Future studies should identify factors that increase the impact of university smoking policies on electronic cigarette use.

Abstract:
With changing consumption patterns, growing populations and increased urbanisation, developing countries face significant challenges with regards to waste management. Waste plastic is a particularly problematic one, with single-use plastic leaking into the environment, including the marine environment, at an unprecedented rate. Around the world, countries are taking action to minimise these impacts, including banning single-use plastics; changing petroleum-based plastics to alternative bio-benign products such as paper, glass or biodegradable plastics; and improving waste collection systems to ensure that all waste is appropriately collected and reprocessed or safely disposed. However, these “solutions” are often met with resistance, from business, government or civil society, due to the intended and unintended consequences, leaving many questioning the most appropriate solution to reducing the leakage. This paper argues that there is no one single solution to addressing the leakage of plastic into the environment, but that the solution is likely to be a combination of the three approaches, based on local considerations.

Abstract: The main function of the bank is to collect funds from the public in the form of deposits, and channel them to the public in the form of credit facilities. However, because the funds used as credit facilities are public funds, then giving credit must be in accordance with the precautionary principle. One of the application of the precautionary principle is to make a credit contract. Credit contract are not only carried out by banks with companies, but also between banks and individual debitor. If an individual debitor is married and does not have a marriage agreement, the husband and wife are generally involved in a credit contract. This is done in addition to guaranteeing loan repayments, also related to guarantees that are generally in the form of property. Basically marriage ties still have the potential to be canceled. So that there will be legal consequences when the marriage is canceled. This study focuses on analyzing the legal consequences of the credit contract made by banks with an individual debitor whose marriages are canceled by the Court

To test the impact of the implementation of technology bans on students’ experience within a course, we collected data from four sections of Introduction to Psychology at a small liberal arts college in the northeast. In two sections, students were banned from using personal technology devices during lecture. In the other two sections, students were permitted to use personal technology devices freely during lecture. We found a significant reduction in student engagement but not in reported interest in psychology or perceived professor–student rapport for students in the technology-ban condition relative to students in the technology-permitted condition. In contrast to previous studies, we found no difference in final grade performance across condition. Although further research is needed, these results suggest that instructors should consider the composition of students in their course prior to implementing a technology ban in the classroom.

Cardinal Manning's Catholic University project was a spectacular failure. Financial mismanagement by Thomas John Capel, the Rector, as well as gossip surrounding his personal life, undermined confidence in him and the college. The Jesuits opposed the scheme as it rivalled their own plans. Despite a Vatican ban, the Jesuits, some influential converts, old Catholic families and sympathetic bishops continued to press for Catholic higher education at Oxford, for social reasons and because they preferred the classical education to Manning's scientific syllabus. The project revealed the tensions and divisions caused by Manning's vision of future Catholic engagement in late Victorian society.

Abstract:
Bone matrix collagen, is one of the major contributors to bone quality. No studies have examined how bone quality affects the results of bone transplantation. Collagen cross-links (CCL) are the key factor in collagen properties. The purpose was to investigate the influences of CCL for both grafted bone and recipient site bone on the success of bone augmentation. Four-week-old male Wister rats (n = 54) were divided into control and test groups. Control and test groups equally sub-divided into donors and recipients. An additional six rats were used to characterize bone at day zero. Test groups received 0.2% beta-aminoproperionitrile (BAPN) for 4 weeks as CCL inhibitor. Animals were further divided into donor and recipient groups. The transplanted bone chips integrated with host bone by 25% more in CCL-deficient animals compared to control. However, no difference in cortical thickness among all conditions. CCL-deficient transplanted bone did not show any extra signs of osteocyte apoptosis, while sclerostin expression was comparable to that in control. The host periosteum of CCL-deficient animals showed higher cellular activity, as well as higher bone quantity and osteoclast activity. Collagen cross-links deficiency in host bone might accelerate the incorporation of grafted bone. effect. Incorporation of the bone grafts appears to depend mainly on host condition rather than graft condition.

Abstract:
Since research on the use of sustainability balanced scorecard to assess university social and environmental performances still remains unexplored, this study aims to fill the gap by examining the acceptance of the idea of the State Islamic Religious Colleges (PTKIN) performances in terms of responsibility for social and environmental aspects based on the sustainability balanced scorecard model. Drawing on a qualitative research, eight respondents from the Board of National Accreditation for Higher Education (BAN-PT) and PTKIN policymakers were interviewed. The results indicated that PTKIN must pay more attention to social and environmental perspectives. It was further revealed that although BAN-PT regulation has explicitly included these two perspectives, there were several indicators that still need to be added according to the sustainability balanced scorecard model. Moreover, the results depicted several challenges such as budgeting, regulations, and paradigms that required some adjustment from the policymakers. These results contribute as fruitful insights for university policymakers in developing strategies to enhance university performances, particularly in social and environmental aspects.

AbstractThis paper reports the finding of the first, known study of a Caribbean community's views on pit bulls. College students (375) provided their perceptions on a number of issues related to pit bull guardianship ("ownership"). Age, sex, and dog-owning status influenced some of their views. They saw pit bulls as being different from other dogs, but not all supported banning pit bulls. Some results reinforced the stereotypes associated with pit bull ownership: Most pit bull owners were under 19 years of age, and older respondents were more likely than younger ones to support a ban on pit bulls. Why different subgroups of respondents held their views would be a useful avenue for future research.
