The religious and political implications of Thomas McCulloch’s efforts on behalf of the Pictou Academy in the early nineteenth century are examined in this chapter. McCulloch, a Presbyterian Secessionist minister influenced by the ideas of the Scottish Enlightenment, viewed his Academy as a non-sectarian alternative to the Church of England’s King’s College in Windsor, Nova Scotia, which at the time held a monopoly on advanced education in the colony. The chapter argues that while contemporaries may have viewed the Academy as a subversive institution, McCulloch was also part of the wider Briti

This period was driven first by the War of 1812 and second by the arrival of Justice Joseph Story, who joined Chief Justice Marshall and Washington to form the backbone of the Marshall Court. Notable cases discussed here include Terrett v. Taylor, McCulloch v. Maryland, Dartmouth College v. Woodward, Houston v. Moore, and Green v. Biddle. Hunter’s Lessee (1816) and McCulloch v. Maryland (1819), the Court reinforced the power of the federal government. In another line of cases, including Fletcher v. Peck (1810) and Dartmouth College v.
