Abstract:
Investigations on cinematic representations of higher education have sought to provide a deeper understanding of popular culture images and how they intersect with real-life academia. Moreover, such projects have examined how such mass communication texts may influence popular opinion surrounding colleges and universities. The existing literature on specific depictions of college professors in American films has explored a number of themes from various perspectives. Many scholars claim that such cinematic representations of higher education and faculty are negative and reinforce cultural stereotypes. Yet, little has been written about how filmmakers create such images. This article examines cinematic college professors from the viewpoint of the filmmaker by completing a case study of a recently produced college professor film and members of its creative team. Interviews with the screenwriter/director, production designer, and costume designer of a pseudonymously titled film investigates how the work of these film professionals was influenced by a number of factors, including their own experiences in higher education, their personal conceptions of college professors, previously viewed college-themed films, and existing stereotypes about professors.

Abstract:
Introduction: Coracoclavicular joint (CCJ) is a true synovial joint between superior surface of coracoid process of scapula and conoid tubercle of clavicle. The radiological prevalence of CCJ in various population ranges 0.55% to 21%. The CCJ are mostly discovered incidentally and is rarely associated with any symptom. Sometimes it may present with shoulder pain, limitation of shoulder movement, upper limb paresthesia and osteoarthritis of itself or adjacent acromioclavicular joint. Hence, this study is aiming to determine the prevalence of anomalous CCJ in patient visiting department of Radio-diagnosis in College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal and to observe association of CCJ with laterality, sides and gender. Methods: A total of 1936 digital chest x-rays films were observed for the presence of CCJ, out of which 1097 images were of male and 839 of females. Age of study population ranged from 3 to 90 years. The data obtained were analyzed using Stastical Package for Social Science version (SPSS) 16.0. The prevalence of CCJ was calculated. The cases with CCJ were further analyzed to evaluate the association of CCJ with laterality, sidedness and gender using Chi-square for one-dimensional “goodness of fit” test. Chi-square of Independence was employed to compare the various parameters (laterality and side) with genders. Results: The prevalence of CCJ was 4.6%. CCJ was more frequently observed in male (67.42%) than female (32.57%). Unilateral occurrence of CCJ (55.06%) was slightly more than bilateral (44.94%). Gender difference was not significantly associated with laterality and sidedness of joint (p<0.05). The incidence of CCJ was more in second decade of life in both male and female. Conclusion: CCJ is not rare, hence, knowledge of presence of CCJ as an etiology of shoulder pain is essential for rational therapy and will prevent misdiagnosis.

Abstract:
The Department of History, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, the University of Gadjah Mada in 2015 made a milestone in the development of historiography in Indonesia. They made a bold move to produce a scholar with a documentary film work instead of a thesis. In the future, it is not impossible that this step will soon be followed by other universities in Indonesia. This paper was written in response to these developments. In this digital era-and in the midst of still low interest in reading in Indonesia-emerged the discourse to seek new media for historiography in Indonesia. The film, especially documentary films are seen as new media that match the characteristics of history because of they both present real-life reality. Moreover, Indonesia with the diversity of tribes and culture and history, of course, save a variety of themes that will not run out to be appointed a documentary. Based on that, this paper will discuss the types, forms, and format of the documentary that is suitable and possible to be produced by history students as a substitute for thesis-considering the cost of film production tends to be higher than thesis research. Thus, the film of a documentary a college student, especially a history produces the quality of research and aestheticsKata

Abrahamian, L. A. "Notes on the Poetics of Parajanov." Critique and Semiotics 37, no. 2 (2019): 10–46. http://dx.doi.org/10.25205/2307-1737-2019-2-10-46.

Abstract:
The author in the form of notes discusses the poetics of Parajanov’s creativity – his realized and unrealized films, collages and life episodes. The film “The Color of Pomegranates” is analyzed in more detail, in which the author acted in a few episodes and is therefore familiar with some of the inner sides of its creation. It is shown how Parajanov visualizes the poetry of the 18th century poet and ashugh (bard) Sayat-Nova, building a new type of poetic cinema, using visual rhymes and repetitions. When the film director was deprived of the opportunity to make movies, he created collages – “pressed films”. The Parajanovian methods of creating collages and the collage principle of his films are explored. The sources and tendencies of the development of Parajanov’s artistic works, his understanding of the canon and improvisation, methods of constructing and transforming images are analyzed. The film director’s adherence to universal color classifications (red, white, black) is revealed with the apparent polychrome coloring of his films and to multivalued and archetypical semantic images, such as “window-cage” or “window-frame-mirror” triad, the last member of which allows the director to operate with twin and androgynous images.

Abstract:
Abstract Asking older adults What Matters to them and assuring that care plans are aligned with these preferences is the cornerstone of an Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS). Health systems have struggled to identify clear ways to ask this question and meaningfully utilize the responses. Both simple and complex options for addressing this challenge have been developed at Rush University Medical Center. At Rush, nurses began asking every inpatient What Matters and placing the response on the white board in the patient’s room. Results of this practice include increased awareness of staff and significant increases in patient satisfaction. Qualitative analysis of responses yields increased awareness of patterns that the hospital can more systematically address. The Rush Center for Excellence in Aging hosts Schaalman Senior Voices, in which older adults from diverse backgrounds are given the unique opportunity to offer their perspectives on life, health and aging related to “What Matters” to them. The films have been used effectively to stimulate conversations among older adults and families in the community and in health professions courses, and with health systems executives. The Rush College of Medicine has integrated AFHS training into communication skills for medical students. Faculty introduce the 4Ms and demonstrate methods for having What Matters (WM) conversations. Students then practice WM conversations with simulated patients; some have had the opportunity to practice with real patients in preceptorships. Implications for the health system and community will be discussed as Rush builds an Age-Friendly Health Community.

DOI: 10.17323/1811-038X-2018-27-4-129-140 Corruption has been broadly discussed in the academic literature for several decades, yet there are few studies dedicated to addressing this topic in the classroom. This paper aims to fill this research gap by providing an example of a seminar on corruption and informal practices in Russia, given for international students at one Western European university. The aim of the seminar was to study the phenomenon of corruption from different perspectives, using different teaching techniques and materials, in order to encourage students to conduct their own analyses and reflections on real-life situations. Drawing on the structure of the seminar, this article provides a brief overview of the historical perspective of corruption in Russia, then summarizes the approach and teaching methods used in the seminar, including presentations, group work, discussions and homework. Finally, the authors provide a detailed overview of the learning materials used. They conclude that an interdisciplinary approach involving numerous literary works, films and case studies is particularly suitable for understanding the concept of “corruption” and “informality” in their respective cultural contexts and for preparing students to face this issue in their (future) professional lives.

Abstract:
A key goal of education for any country is to make sure that every pupil has a chance to excel, both in school and life. Increasingly, a child’s success in school will determine his success as an adult; will determine whether he/she goes to college, what profession that he/she enters and how much they are paid. Kenya’s education system has laid emphasis on a cluster of science subjects that must be passed for one to be placed in a meaningful course at tertiary level, university and finally employment. The Visually impaired child has been disadvantaged and this study therefore tried to investigate why there are more street beggars who are Visually impaired as compared to other persons with disabilities in the Kenyan major towns. The study was conducted in the three towns within Kenya, namely: Kisumu, Nakuru and Nairobi. The study population was 145, and a purposive sampling was used to select the 60 respondents. The study found that the Visually impaired persons who were beggars on the street had basic education at primary level and some had form four certificate, however they had failed to gain any meaningful employment due to the growing need of technology in the work place and the increasing interest in the role of information and communication technologies for one to be employed. The study also found that as much as there is an increasing effort by the Government to have computer studies for all schools in Kenya. The Jaw’s programme is lacking in those computers and therefore the visually impaired learners have not had an access to computer education and hence the mass influx of beggars. The study recommends that of the schools where the Visually impaired learners are in inclusive education, there should be at least two computers with a Jaw programme to help the Visually impaired have an access in computer literacy and hence employment opportunity. The study also recommends that the street beggars with form four educations should be given vocational training with information technology so as to empower them with the current basic skills to compete favourable with other job seekers.

Abstract:
Charles Ellington graduated at Duke University, North Carolina, and came to Cambridge in 1973 to work for a PhD on insect flight dynamics. He developed novel methodology and software for the kinematic analysis of freely hovering insects and applied them to his own high-speed films of a range of species. He identified five new non-steady-state mechanisms for lift generation, was the first to develop a vortex theory for flapping flight and developed and extended the use of morphometric parameters in calculating the forces and power requirements of flight. He remained in Cambridge, married a colleague, joined the staff of the Department of Zoology, became a fellow of Downing College and continued to work on insect aerodynamics and energetics, publishing on flight muscle efficiency, the factors limiting flight performance and the aerodynamic implications of the origin of insect flight. Building a closed-circuit wind tunnel connected with a sensitive oxygen analyser, he studied with colleagues how the aerodynamics and metabolic power input of bumblebees vary with flight speed, challenging the orthodox theory that this should follow a U-shaped curve. Outstanding among later research was the discovery that hawkmoths, and by implication many other insects, gain high levels of lift by generating a vortex above the leading edge, stabilized by spiralling out along the span—a major focus of animal flight research ever since. His many administrative roles included editorship of theJournal of Experimental Biology. He became a British citizen in 1995, was elected FRS in 1998 and to a chair of animal mechanics in 1999. Awards include the Scientific Medal of the Zoological Society and the University of Cambridge Pilkington Prize for teaching excellence. He was diabetic throughout his adult life, and suffered progressive ill health following a heart attack in 1996. He took early retirement in 2010, lived quietly with his wife and two sons at home near Newmarket, and died in July 2019.

Bossard, Maxime. "Développement de moules intrinsèquement antiadhésifs pour l'étude du collage en nano-impression." Thesis, Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016GREAT010/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Nanoimprint is a lithography technology which consists in structuring a polymer film by pressing a structured mold into it. This promising method is low-cost and has a high throughput, but its implementation in industry still requires improvements, particularly regarding the defectivity of imprinted structures. To circumvent this defectivity, the use of antiadhesive treatments, grafted to the mold surface has been developed to facilitate the demolding step. However, these treatments have a limited lifespan, thereby empeding the global nanoimprint cost-effectiveness.This thesis focuses on mold durability and suggests alternative materials for the fabrication of nanoimprint molds. To match nanoimprint requirements, four materials (Diamond-like carbon, Silicon carbide and their fluorine-doped versions) were developed to be used as alternatives to silicon and quartz. Physical and physico-chemical characterization were carried out, so as to determine the best candidates that were then patterned, leading to usable molds.Adhesion properties of these materials were then characterized both in UV-nanoimprint and thermal-nanoimprint procedures. These investigations showed that despite their high surface energies, the developed materials exhibit intrinsically antiadhesive properties, thanks to their chemical inertness

Sharma, Kanchan. "Effects of Instructional Videos and Real-life Mathematics Activity on Student Achievement and Attitude in a Community College Transitional Mathematics Course." Thesis, 2018. https://doi.org/10.7916/D84474DB.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated the effect of instructional videos and real-life activities on the mathematical achievement and attitude of developmental students. The study also investigated the attitude of developmental students towards learning mathematics through instructional videos and real-life activities. The study was conducted at an urban community college with transitional mathematics classes. The four mathematics classes in the study received various combinations of real-life activities, instructional videos, and traditional teaching while studying basic concepts such as decimal place value, percentages, and fractions. Pre-and post-tests were conducted to measure student achievement. Attitude scales, surveys, and interviews were used to measure attitude changes. Results showed that, overall, the mathematics achievement of the classes receiving consistent exposure to videos and real-life activities was greater than classes receiving only some of the special instructional treatments. Students interviewed believed that instructional videos and real-life activities improved their understanding of the mathematical concepts involved in the study.

Full text
Abstract:
Vivre Ici analyzes a selection of films from the vast viewing landscape of contemporary French documentary film, a genre that has experienced a renaissance in the past twenty years. The films are connected not just by a general interest in engaging the “real,” but by a particular attention to French space and place. From farms and wild places to roads, schools, and urban edgelands, these films explore the spaces of the everyday and the human and non-human experiences that unfold within them. Through a critical approach that integrates phenomenology, film theory, eco-criticism and cultural history, Levine investigates the notion of documentary as experience. She asks how and why, in the contemporary media landscape, these films seek to avoid argumentation and instead, give the viewer a feeling of “being there.” As a diverse collection of filmmakers, both well-known and less so, explore the limits and possibilities of these places, a collage-like, incomplete, and fragmented vision of France as seen and felt through documentary cameras comes into view. Venturing beyond film analysis to examine the production climate for these films and their circulation in contemporary France, Levine explores the social and political consequences of these “films that matter” for the viewers who come into contact with them.

Abstract:
There is a tendency in recent nonfiction film to recontextualise archival photographs in creative ways. In films like Felvidék. Caught In-Between (Vladislava Plančíková, 2014) photographs are part of a collage work, while films like Crulic. The Path to Beyond (Anca Damian, 2011) use photographs in animated environments. At the other extreme is Radu Jude's Dead Nation (2017) presenting a series of photographs as a film that paradoxically demonstrates the lack of images of the Romanian Holocaust. These films open up new possibilities for the medium of photography, redefining through cinema the complex relationship between photography/the indexical trace and history. This chapter builds upon the phenomenological approach to images by George Didi-Hubermann and László Tarnay in order to discuss intermedial relations of nonfiction films and to present what the photographic image means in the post-media age documentary.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights the legacy and influence of Ken Russell's The Devils (1973). The Devils is a film which concurrently exists both within and without of horror. The presence of a timeless, universal message should not be seen as a sign that Russell is merely using the genre as a vehicle on which to relay loftier concerns, but rather proof that some of the best horror films have an exceptionally long reach. It is not so much a film which works on different levels, but rather one in which the political and the personal, the fine detail and the broad canvas, the earth-shattering and the life-changing all collude and shift around in the same space, ready mixed for viewer consumption. The audience does not have to process the film in terms of layers, or separate the literal from the analogous, as with The Devils Russell created a work which affords the viewer that rarest of opportunities: to simultaneously think and feel.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses all three of Reichardt’s experimental short films. Each contain elements of feminist ideology highlighting a mixture of social and cultural tensions pulled from news headlines. All three short films share a haptic sensibility via form and content. Ode based on Bobbie Gentry’s song “Ode to Billie Joe” follows an adolescent boy’s struggle with his sexuality, ending in suicide, set in the rural south. Ode is a 48 minute narrative shot on Super-8 and mixes the tension between homosexuality and extreme religious ideologies. Then, A Year is a collage of images with voice-overs discussing real life news stories: the statutory rape case perpetrated by Mary Kay Letourneau and the murder of a woman by her husband. Travis is based on a National Public Radio interview with a mother struggling to understand the loss of her son during the Iraq war. This chapter connects the influence of documentary style realism in all of these early films to her later narrative features as she explores social and cultural issues.

Abstract:
The mastery and majestic aestheticism of Shakespeare has a global influence. The extensive presence of Shakespeare began in India as a part of the colonial strategy. The Bard's works were first introduced in schools and colleges as a scheme of the British government to get cheap administrative services from the natives. Gradually, Shakespeare entered the theatres of India, beginning with Calcutta, the then capital of India. With time, when the theatres were experiencing “dark stage,” Shakespeare got adopted and adapted in the film industry. From Bollywood to regional Indian cinemas, like the Bengali film industry, all felt the influence as well as drew inspiration. This chapter discusses in details about the introduction of Shakespeare in India, Calcutta, his movement from page to stage, and then stage to screen. Movies like Saptapadi, Bhranti Bilas, Srimati Bhayankari, Hrid Majhare, Arshinagar, Hemanta, and Zulfiqar have been discussed.

Inevitably with so much change and radicalism in the field there were a few editors and magazines that strove to restore some normality and seek to present a more traditional and less angry form of sf. Although some of these had a small measure of success, like ABORIGINAL SF, they lacked funding and generally fell by the wayside. Also it was evident that those who wanted the basic form of SF as represented in many films and TV series had shifted towards the gaming market and so the traditional core of magazine readers were being syphoned away by new forms of entertainment. However, there was also a growth in sf magazine production in colleges and universities, plus the reemergence of magazines as paperback anthologies.

Abstract:
The circumstances and variables surrounding the auditing environment like the International Trade Agreement (ITA) and the probability of the entrance of foreign auditing firms in the auditing field in Egypt resulted in pressure to enhance the audit effectiveness and quality of Egyptian auditing firms’ performance. The main focus in this research study is on the Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) modes to be used in the communication process in auditing firms to enhance the auditor performance. A survey strategy is conducted by using questionnaires, which are distributed among a number of Egyptian auditing firms, to collect the required data and then the collected data is analyzed logically and statistically. These logic and statistical analyses are made to test the study hypotheses. The results of this research study supported the acceptance of all study hypotheses. The results revealed that CMC modes effectiveness increases the audit work effectiveness and audit quality. Also, the results indicate the contradiction between the users’ perception of the effect of using CMC modes on the audit effectiveness and the real application of traditional communication modes in auditing firms.

Abstract:
When John and William Bartram set off for Florida from their Philadelphia farm on a July day in 1765, a vast and largely unknown continent lay before them. Journeying in search of novel and unusual plants for their English patrons, the virgin territories of the southeastern United States provided fertile grounds for their biological explorations. These pioneering naturalists, father and son, lived at a time when new scientific discoveries literally lay around each corner. On this trip alone, they were able to collect or draw more than 200 species new to science. One species that slipped away from them was a “very curious” shrub they found growing along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia. Sporting beautiful white flowers accented by a central tuft of orange stamens, the shrubs unfortunately yielded no ripe seeds. Only on a return trip to Georgia some eight years later was son William able to collect seed and bring the species into cultivation—and to the attention of the scientific world. Given the name Franklinia alatamaha, in honor of Bartram’s close friend and fellow Quaker Benjamin Franklin, the shrub turned out to represent a completely new branch of the camellia family. Thanks to its beautiful flowers and foliage, Franklinia quickly became a popular ornamental, and even today it is widely cultivated in gardens. But Bartram’s horticultural introduction of this unique plant was fortuitous for another reason: The species has disappeared from its native habitat along the Altamaha River and was last seen in the wild in 1803. Sadly, Franklinia represents one of the first species known to vanish from the American landscape. While the American frontier formally closed in 1892, the biological discovery of America continues to this day. Not all discoveries are as spectacular as the “curious shrubs” the Bartrams had the good fortune to find, but each, in its own way, is just as important. The ongoing process of exploring our biological frontiers gradually fills in the fabric of our knowledge about the United States and its ecosystems. The knowledge generated by this basic inventory also serves as the backbone of our efforts to protect our nation’s biological diversity.

Abstract:
The strands of Steiner’s life emphasized in earlier chapters—his yearning for commercial success, his growing debts, and his emotional neglect of his son—reach their fulcrum here in ways both triumphant and tragic. After an anxious year of unemployment, Steiner found a sympathetic partner in director Delmer Daves. Daves’s 1959 film of a racy bestseller, A Summer Place, inspired 71-year-old Max to write a pastiche of dreamy ’50s rock ballads. Steiner had no commercial expectations for the tune, but a recording of the theme rose to Number One on the charts, won a Grammy (beating Elvis and Sinatra), and became the best-selling instrumental of the rock ’n’ roll era. Almost simultaneously, Steiner won his decades-long battle with ASCAP, which agreed to collect royalties on film music. Max would soon receive millions. But in 1962, Steiner received shattering news from which he’d never fully recover: his 22-year-old son, Ronald, had committed suicide.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the manufacturing workforce. Data indicates a growing need to upgrade the manufacturing workforce to higher levels of skills, which appears to be a prerequisite for advanced manufacturing. Indeed, the Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) reports placed much stress on workforce training and education, at both the skilled worker and engineering levels. The manufacturing institutes appear to be positioned to help fill the gap in U.S. labor markets for high-skill training. The Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow (LIFT) institute in particular appears to be developing models for workforce training, systematically engaging state governments and firms in its core states in new training program elements, with programs linked to secondary schools, community colleges, participating employers, and area universities. LIFT sees that workforce training programs are critical for advanced manufacturing technology dissemination, not only training for the sake of training. It is a key way the institutes can scale their new technology developments.

Abstract:
The influence of different physical forms of substrates on fibroblast behavior was examined by comparing the following experimental and control groups: 1) glass coverslips, 2) poly(methyl methacrylate-co-ethyl acrylate) (PMMAEA) cast films, 3) electrospun PMMAEA nanofibers, 4) electrospun PMMAEA/collagen nanofibers, and 5) electrospun collagen. Cell adhesion, spreading and proliferation were compared on the different substrates. It was observed that fibroblasts on electrospun PMMAEA, PMMAEA-collagen, and collagen substrates spread more slowly after plating, and did not spread out to the extent observed for glass or PMMAEA films. Cells on electrospun fibers exhibited more filopodial-like structures and fewer stress fibers than the glass and PMMAEA film surfaces. Cell viability studies showed that although cells remained viable on all substrates, proliferation was faster on glass and PMMAEA films than on electrospun substrates. Overall, fibroblast behavior appeared to more closely resemble in vivo behavior on the electrospun nanofibers than on films or glass substrates.

Abstract:
Due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, college tours are no longer available, so many students have lost the opportunity to see their dream school’s campus. To solve this problem, we developed a product called “Virtourgo,” a university virtual tour website that uses Google Street View images gathered from a web scraper allowing students to see what college campuses are like even when tours are unavailable during the pandemic. The project consists of 3/4 parts: the web scraper script, the GitHub server, the Google Domains DNS Server, and the HTML files. Some challenges we met include scraping repeated pictures and letting the HTML dropdown menu jump to the correct location. We solved these by implementing Python and Javascript functions that specifically target such challenges. Finally, after experimenting with all the functions of the web scraper and website, we confirmed that it works as expected and can scrape and deliver tours of any university campus or public buildings we want.

Abstract:
A 46 yr old Caucasian woman has been diagnosed as having a congenital deficiency of platelet a-granules (gray platelet syndrome - GPS) associated with an extensive idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). The patient had a life long history of bleeding tendency including dental bleedings in childhood, intraperitoneal bleeding, metrorrhagias which led to hysterectomy, and post-operative hemorrhages. When aged 16, splenectomy was performed because of a mild thrombocytopenia but did not result in a subsequent improvement of the platelet count. The spleen was enlarged and showed an excess of fibrous tissue.Evaluation of hemostasis (July 1986) revealed a moderate thrombocytopenia of 120 × 109/1 constrasting with a markedly prolonged Simplate bleeding time (>30 min.). When examined on stained blood films, the platelets presented a "ghost-like" gray appearance. The mean platelet volume (coulter S + IV) was increased to 14 μ3 (N : 6.5-9.5 μ3). Ultrastructural studies confirmed the lack of a-granules and showed normal presence of dense-bodies, mitochondria and peroxisomes. Platelet aggregation was decreased when induced by thrombin, ADP and collagen but normal in response to arachidonic acid and ristocetin. A severely decreased content of platelet proteins such as fibrinogen, vWF:Ag, BTG and PF4. was further demonstrated. A bone marrow biopsy performed on March 1986 gave no evidence of myelofibrosis (occasionally recorded in GPS) but the patient developed for these last 6 years a severe IPF requiring a permanent oxygen-therapy. Although the association GPS-IPF might be only considered as a fortuitous one, we hypothesize that these two events might be related to each other, possibly through the presence of megakaryocytes in pulmonary capillaries, in the same way as bone marrow fibrosis has been suggested as a possible consequence of the lack of a-granules in GPS (DR0UET et al. - Nouv. Rev. Fr. Hematol., 1981, 23 : 95).

Abstract:
The paper is focused on obtaining a new nanostructured composite by innovative technologies based on: fibrillar cellulose/titanium dioxide/surfactants (bolaform- dodecandioyl-diglycine and surfactant classic-collagen hydrolysate)/ethanol/water, for improved surface properties. Innovation consists in technologies for obtaining new nanostructured composites, solubilisation/compatibilisation of their component substances for the conditioning of supports processed with the film created by evaporation of the emulsion nanocomposites. Fibrillar cellulose/titanium dioxide nanocomposites have been stabilized with bolaform surfactants in a 1:1 ratio of ethanol/water solvents in order to increase the uniformity of titanium dioxide shell nanocomposites. Nanostructured “cauliflower”-like composites developed as a result of biopolymer-surfactant interactions for fibrillar cellulose/titanium dioxide/bolaform couple in ethanol/water system are reported by SEM microscopy. The analysis by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy of bolaform, fibrillar cellulose and dynamic light scattering of 2 types of nanocomposites emulsions (with bolaform and classic surfactant emulsions) were reported. The new nanocomposites could provide the hybrid film with increased mechanical resistance to water and heat. Supports processing with the composite film improve wet/dry friction resistance, water resistance and tensile strength. Environmentally-friendly supports with smart multifunctional features are obtained for various applications.

Abstract:
Public audiovisual archives like the Österreichische Mediathek (Austrian National Audiovisual Archive) have long been concerned with documenting the political as well as the cultural public sphere. National and international efforts have worked to collect and preserve historic film documents from the private sphere. An ongoing Österreichische Mediathek project addresses a source typically viewed as marginal: private video sources from the 1980s and 1990s. The challenges are not only to develop a collection and archiving strategy for a type of content on which there is little to no scientific research but also to master the technical challenges of archiving such materials for the long term. This paper examines the development and the workflow of the project and goes on to consider the historical functions of home videos and their qualities as historical sources.

In ASME 2013 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Founded in 1995, the mission of the Learning Factory at the Pennsylvania State University has been to integrate real-world, hands-on design/build experience into the engineering classroom through industry-sponsored capstone design projects. While the Learning Factory began like many other capstone design programs, a new college-wide capstone model emerged over the past five years to enable interdisciplinary design teams across multiple departments. First 3, then 4, 5, 8, and now 12 engineering majors regularly collaborate in what has become the largest industry-supported and college-wide capstone design program in the nation. Now more than 70% of the capstone design teams involve students from two or more disciplines, with some teams consisting of 4–5 different engineering majors. At the same time that we improved our ability to work across disciplinary boundaries, many entrepreneurs and start-up firms became aware of our capstone design program, and we found ourselves working with more and more of them on projects involving concept development and prototyping. In fact, the more interdisciplinary the program became, the better we could meet their needs, which often required input from 3 or more engineering disciplines as well as non-engineering disciplines. As a result, the number of capstone design projects sponsored by “real” entrepreneurs and start-ups has increased eight-fold over the past five years: from 5 projects in 2007/08 to over 40 projects in 2011/12. We discuss the factors that contributed to this growth, including industry-friendly intellectual property and non-disclosure agreements, a low-cost sponsorship model, a multidisciplinary capstone design section that satisfied the ABET requirements among all participating departments, and student interest in making a significant and immediate impact on their industry-sponsored project. The risks and challenges of working with start-ups and entrepreneurs is also discussed, namely, managing sponsor’s expectations, working with non-technical sponsors, clarifying project scope, avoiding project creep, and emphasizing the educational experience over project outcomes. Recent start-up successes are discussed along with a student entrepreneurial team’s capstone project prototype that lead to a successful fund-raising campaign on Kickstarter.

Abstract:
Abstract In aero engines the combustors are subjected to critical thermal conditions in terms of high temperatures and corrosive environment, which could affect the service life of the entire system. As well known, Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC) and above all cooling systems represents the state-of-the-art in the nowadays protecting methods: the maximization of this beneficial effect is achieved by defining an optimal cooling arrangement and developing suitable manufacturing technologies for these systems. In modern aero-engine combustors, one of the most effective cooling scheme for liners is composed by an effusion perforation coupled with a slot system to start the film cooling. The cooling performances are deeply influenced by the mutual interactions between swirling and cooling flows. In addition, for typical Rich-Quench-Lean (RQL) combustor architectures, the injection of air provided to promoting the local break-down of the flame mixture fraction, deeply interacts with the swirled flow, generating recirculating structures capable of affecting the development of film cooling and making the design of cooling systems very challenging. A new test facility for testing effusion test plates for RQL combustors applications has been developed with the final aim of comparing different cooling strategies and at the same time to collect data for numerical model validation. The experimental set-up consists of a non-reactive planar sector rigs with 5 engine-scale swirlers fed with air up to 250 °C and 3 bar. The rig was equipped with outer/inner dilution ports, and a simple inner liner cooling scheme composed of effusion and a slot system: all these features, fed with air at ambient temperature, can be independently controlled in terms of mass flow. Using dedicated optical accesses, InfraRed (IR) camera tests were performed to retrieve overall effectiveness data imposing a temperature difference between swirling and cooling flows. To better understand those results, Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) technique was used to obtain reliable film effectiveness data decoupling the contribution of slot and effusion flows. The thermal characterization was supported by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) investigations on the median plane. Tests were performed at different pressure drops across swirler and varying the mass flows of slot and inner/outer liners. The analysis of the data highlighted the influences of the swirling flow on the overall thermal performance and the behaviour of the film cooling system.

Abstract:
With the use of technology in the classroom growing every year, lecturers are expected to blend facilitations by making use of learning management systems. At the Central University of Technology, Free State this poses a problem for the learning designers in charge of training lecturers in educational technologies as there is limited space and time to not only teach lecturers the skills, but also to apply them in their own contexts. The purpose of this paper is to present participant perspectives of an online short course in which they learned how to use Blackboard and other educational technologies needed for blending teaching and learning. An exploratory design was implemented with descriptive statistics involving quantitative analysis of the collected data to determine the participants’ perspective on their skills gained. An online survey tool was used to collect the data. Eighty-four percent of particpants felt that they were able to communicate via the system’s announcements, 82% felt confident that they would be able to customize the space and 94% felt that they were now able to add content, such as files. When asked if they felt like they learned the skills they expected from the online course, 94% of particpants replied positively. Keywords: e-learning; learning management system; Blackboard; instructional design; online course; educational technology.
